Trained Obedience in Hebrews 5

In Hebrews 5, obedience isn’t presented as a cold command—it’s portrayed as something God forms within the heart. Join Jason Blaiklock as we explore the role of the high priest, the compassion of Jesus our greater Priest, and the warning against becoming spiritually dull. You’ll hear how listening that leads to growth and obedience learned through trials can shape the way we trust God, especially when life feels heavy. [00:00:00] Hello and welcome to the Divine Stream Radio Podcast. I'm Jason Blakelock and today we're in Hebrews 5 where obedience isn't just disgust, it's quietly trained into the heart. Now Hebrews 5 starts by reminding us that the Jewish high priest is chosen to serve on behalf of his people. He represents them before God and he's not meant to be distant.

[00:00:20] He knows what human weakness is like and right there we see something important. God doesn't call us to obedience from the outside. He calls us from the inside with compassion and understanding. Then the chapter turns our attention to Jesus, our greater priest. Jesus is described as someone who's able to help us because he experienced real human weakness.

[00:00:43] That matters because obedience is hard when we feel alone. But Hebrews says in effect you're not alone in this, God understands. But there's also a challenge in this chapter. Hebrews says there's a danger of becoming dull to God's voice. It uses the picture of milk instead of solid food. Some people had been around long enough to grow but they were still stuck at the basics and when that happens spiritually, obedience becomes harder.

[00:01:09] Not because God becomes less clear but because our hearts become less responsive. So what does obedience look like here? It looks like this. Listening that leads to growth. It's not just hearing truth once and moving on. It's taking truth in so that the truth starts shaping the way we think and then the way we live. Then Hebrews gets very direct with an idea we shouldn't miss. Those who have truly received God's word are meant to learn obedience through what they suffer.

[00:01:36] Now that doesn't mean suffering is good in itself. But it does mean God can use hard seasons as training ground. Sometimes obedience shows up not when life is easy but when life is pressing and we choose to trust God anyway. And at the center of all of this is Jesus himself. He learned obedience. Not in the sense that he was ever sinful but in the sense that he fully walked through the path God set before him.

[00:02:05] And as he did, he became the source of salvation for those who obey him. So let me bring it home simply. If you want obedience that lasts, don't just ask, what should I do? Ask, am I growing in how I hear God? If you've been skimming scripture, obedience will feel cloudy. If you're staying stuck at the basics, obedience will feel delayed.

[00:02:29] But if you keep returning to God's word, especially when you don't feel like it, obedience becomes a steady living rhythm. Hebrews 5 is really calling us to respond to God with faith that grows into action. God is patient but he also intends that we mature. So today, as you go, here's a practical step. Choose one clear command or conviction from Hebrews 5 or the wider teaching of scripture and ask God for the courage to do it.

[00:02:56] But not tomorrow. Today in a small way. Obedience often begins with one faithful step. Thanks for listening. I invite you to join the discussion.
