EXAMINING SODOM

In Genesis 18:20-32, God tells Abraham that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah is very heavy and that He will go down to check it. Abraham steps forward and asks God to spare the city if good people live there, bargaining the number down from fifty to ten, and God agrees each time.
The Cry of Sin and God’s Justice
Loud cries: God hears a loud cry of pain and wrong coming from Sodom and Gomorrah. The bad acts of the people are heavy and deep.
Fair check: God says He will look closely to see if the wrong is as bad as the cries say. This shows God is fair and does not punish without proof.
Abraham’s Bold Prayer
Standing close: The angels head toward Sodom, but Abraham stays close and stands before the Lord.
Asking with respect: Abraham calls himself dust and ashes, showing deep respect for God, yet he speaks up with courage.
The core question: Abraham asks if God will kill the good people along with the bad ones. He asks, "Will the Judge of all the earth do what is right?"
The Bargaining of Grace
Fifty to ten: Abraham asks God to save the city for 50 good people, then 45, 40, 30, 20, and finally 10.
God’s soft heart: Each time Abraham names a lower number, God says yes, He will not destroy it for that number's sake. This shows God is slow to anger and loves to show mercy.
