00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 Jesus answered, it is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:16 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 What you are about to do, do quickly, Jesus told him.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:30 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 or to give something to the poor.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out, and it was night.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 When he was gone, Jesus said,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:48 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 My children, I will be with you only a little longer.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now,

00:02:19 --> 00:02:20 Lord, why can't I follow you now?
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 I will lay down my life for you.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:24 Then Jesus answered,

00:03:11 --> 00:03:15 Second is love, life, and death.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:17 Thirdly, love and glory.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 And lastly, Julian's problem.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 Firstly, problem of invisibility.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 Now, I think it's actually quite cool to be a geek nowadays.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:31 So...
00:03:31 --> 00:03:42 That's why I'm going to proudly make a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 Now, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:54 In this series, there's a thing called the SEP.

00:04:05 --> 00:04:10 So, if you want to hide something, right, to make it invisible,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:18 what you do is you make it as gary and disgusting as possible,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 even in the middle of a field.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:25 You know, you paint something purple with, you know, stars and all that sort of stuff.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:34 And what happens is the thing becomes protected from unwanted eyes.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:40 And that's because it's somebody else's problem.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 That's how you make something disappear.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:50 You know, if you want to disappear, you know, pretend that you need something from someone.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 And then suddenly, you're gone.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 It's not so much become invisible, but unnoticed.
00:04:56 --> 00:05:02 It's a really cheap way, you know, if our governments could figure out a way of putting that into military technology.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 There you go, Adam.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:05 S-E-P.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:13 The reason why I mention that is because it's almost, I don't know, like,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 we had a combined service today at Willoughby Council.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:22 The Christian witness in Chesswood, I think, is almost like an S-E-P.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:27 You know, how many people actually notice that we exist?
00:05:29 --> 00:05:36 Like, how many people notice that St. Paul's meet here on a Sunday evening to worship God?
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 How many people actually care?
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 Well, I imagine this is kind of it.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 We disappear.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 We become unnoticed to the rest of our society.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:56 What will take us to do to become noticeable?
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 You know, it's the opposite of S-E-P.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:05 If there was an anti-S-E-P, how will we become visible?
00:06:06 --> 00:06:13 How will we individually and corporately make an impact to the rest of the people around us?
00:06:13 --> 00:06:21 Did you notice that this is the type of thing that Jesus is concerned about here in John 13?
00:06:22 --> 00:06:29 Come with me to John 13, 34 and 35.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:35 The passage that I'm sure you all know and love and are familiar with,
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 and this kind of becomes invisible to us sometimes.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 Reading from the ESV,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:42 Jesus says,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 A new commandment I give to you,
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 that you love one another just as I have loved you.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 You also are to love one another.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 And notice what he says.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 If you do this, this is what happens.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:57 By this, all people will know that you are my disciples,
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 if you have love for one another.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:10 To overcome invisibility, all you need is love, apparently, according to Jesus.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 Before we turn to that, just very quickly, background.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:19 We're spending the next few weeks on chapter 13,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:22 I think on to 17 of John's Gospel.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 I can't remember, I haven't checked the roster.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:31 But to orient you, the first 12 chapters of John's Gospel
00:07:31 --> 00:07:35 talks about the first three years of Jesus' life,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 so three years,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 and from 13 to about 17,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 kind of the last few hours,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 which is kind of disproportional to the rest,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 and is essentially one single conversation.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 So three, four chapters of John's Gospel,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 as opposed to the rest,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 just focus on one conversation,
00:07:58 --> 00:08:03 which kind of suggests to you that that conversation must be really important.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:12 Really important for John to spend so much ink recording it for our benefit.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 And when you read it, it's kind of understandable.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 You know, all through John's Gospel,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 Jesus makes these amazing promises.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 I am the bread of life.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 If you come to me, you'll never hunger.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:29 But when you get to the last few hours of Jesus' life,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 he says to his disciples and us,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 see you later.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 I'm going.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:43 And, well, if he's not going to be around anymore,
00:08:44 --> 00:08:47 presumably, what he says is going to be quite significant
00:08:47 --> 00:08:53 for the people who've invested their whole life into Jesus.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 And we're in a similar situation.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 We don't see Jesus face to face.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:04 And he's invited us to invest our life into him.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:10 So what he says to his disciples, I guess, are relevant to us.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:14 Why should we keep investing our life into him?
00:09:14 --> 00:09:22 What does it mean for us who have invested our life into Jesus to live in a time that he's absent from us?
00:09:22 --> 00:09:27 Well, we'll come to that.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 Love, life, and death.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:37 A focus of the topic is the new commandment, a commandment of love.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:42 But it's important for us to understand the context in which it appears.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:46 Yes, it appears in a context of that one long conversation.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:51 But it's a little bit more specific than that.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 It's very odd.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 The first, if you turn to it,
00:09:59 --> 00:10:03 before he talks about the new command,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 18 to 30,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:11 is focused on the betrayal of Judas.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:15 And I don't know what you think of it.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:19 It sort of struck me as kind of like an odd logic to it.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:24 Why is the commandment of love following what he was saying about Judas?
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 Well, let me make the first point that love,
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 the commandment of love,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 appears in the context of life and death.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 That's the context.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:40 It's clearly a life and death situation for Jesus.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:45 He was going to be betrayed by one of his own,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:49 which lead eventually to his execution.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:53 It's not an idea that is new in John's gospel.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 Jesus spoke about it back in chapter 6, verse 71.
00:10:57 --> 00:11:00 So back in those chapters ago,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 he spoke about his betrayal.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 And chapter 12, again,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 he spoke repeatedly about his betrayal.
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 But there's something new that happens.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:14 Again, there's a bit of a time reference throughout John's gospel.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 Now is not the time.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 Now is not the time.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 But suddenly, in chapter 13,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 there's this little reference that says,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 now is the time.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 Now is the time.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:30 We sort of pass some point of no return.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:34 When Judas made up his mind to betray Jesus
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 and he's gone out to get the enemies of Jesus,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 that was it.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 That was it for Jesus.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:43 It would lead to, eventually, his arrest and execution.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 The Rubicon had been crossed.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 The die had been cast.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 This is it for Jesus.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 It was life and death for him.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 But it's not just life and death for him.
00:11:57 --> 00:12:01 It is life and death for you and for me.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 I don't know whether you thought about this point.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 Like all the talk of Judas,
00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 what's the relevance of that to you?
00:12:12 --> 00:12:15 What's the take-home message of that?
00:12:15 --> 00:12:20 Well, if you come with me to verse 19 of chapter 13,
00:12:21 --> 00:12:25 Jesus kind of explains why he was going on
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 about Judas betraying him.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 Did you notice?
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 He says, I'm telling you this now,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 before it takes place,
00:12:31 --> 00:12:34 that when it does take place,
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 when it does take place, what happens?
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 Have a look at it.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:46 That you may believe.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 It's an odd sort of word.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 He doesn't say, so that you may know.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:56 He's that you may believe that I am he.
00:12:56 --> 00:13:01 All the things that he's been talking about with Judas
00:13:01 --> 00:13:07 is so that the disciples and us will come to believe
00:13:07 --> 00:13:10 that Jesus is he, that he is to Christ.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:15 Now, John used very similar language in chapter 20, verse 31.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:20 If you flip forward a few chapters,
00:13:21 --> 00:13:24 John chapter 20, verses 30 to 31,
00:13:25 --> 00:13:28 kind of like a summary of what the whole book is about,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:58 John says,
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 John says,
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 John says,
00:14:02 --> 00:14:05 John's gospel,
00:14:05 --> 00:14:08 John is, and this appeals to me and maybe to some of you,
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 John's been acting like a lawyer.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 Geeks and lawyers.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:18 And he's been trying to prove a point.
00:14:19 --> 00:14:22 And what he does is he brings forward these witnesses
00:14:22 --> 00:14:24 as lawyers do in court.
00:14:24 --> 00:14:28 And these witnesses prove certain things.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 That's what lawyers do.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 They're called signs,
00:14:31 --> 00:14:34 but another word for it in John's gospel is they're witnesses.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:36 John brings out all these witnesses
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 to show, to demonstrate to you
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 that Jesus is the chosen,
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 special king of God
00:14:42 --> 00:14:45 who can give you life.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:51 It is in his hands that he holds your life
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 and he can give it to you.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 That's what he's been seeking to prove.
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 Now, you might be thinking,
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 possibly,
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 well,
00:14:59 --> 00:15:01 why do I need life from Jesus?
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 For I'm already alive.
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 I'm sitting there,
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 or you seem to be alive.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 You know,
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 most of you aren't
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 because you're not laughing at my jokes.
00:15:14 --> 00:15:16 But that's maybe more me than you.
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 Why do we need life from Jesus?
00:15:21 --> 00:15:21 Well,
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 this week I went to a training thing
00:15:24 --> 00:15:28 with a lady by the name of Elizabeth McKinnon.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:31 She is an expert on aging.
00:15:31 --> 00:15:34 And she reckons
00:15:34 --> 00:15:36 that we live in a culture
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 that denies aging.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:39 As in,
00:15:40 --> 00:15:40 it doesn't happen,
00:15:40 --> 00:15:42 or it doesn't happen to me,
00:15:42 --> 00:15:45 or it's something that could be stopped.
00:15:46 --> 00:15:46 You know,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 there's certain things that you can do.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:48 You know,
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 aging is a terrible thing,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 but it sort of sets itself in a wider context.
00:15:53 --> 00:15:55 Not only does our culture deny aging,
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 but we deny death.
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 Death doesn't happen.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 It's sort of medicalized.
00:16:00 --> 00:16:02 It's something that happens out there.
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 It doesn't happen in our midst.
00:16:05 --> 00:16:07 It could never happen to me,
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 particularly if you're young.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 But if you're older,
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 death is not something
00:16:10 --> 00:16:12 that could happen to the people around you.
00:16:13 --> 00:16:15 And so when it does happen,
00:16:15 --> 00:16:18 it takes us completely by surprise.
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 My wife died.
00:16:20 --> 00:16:20 My husband died.
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 My children died.
00:16:23 --> 00:16:25 It's so unexpected.
00:16:25 --> 00:16:28 And what McKinnon was saying
00:16:28 --> 00:16:30 is that we need to accept
00:16:30 --> 00:16:33 the reality that we will die.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 That death is a reality.
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 In fact,
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 the reality is
00:16:38 --> 00:16:41 we are as good as dead.
00:16:42 --> 00:16:45 And she has this wonderful line.
00:16:46 --> 00:16:49 She says that life is a terminal disease.
00:16:49 --> 00:16:52 You know,
00:16:52 --> 00:16:55 you don't need to be diagnosed with cancer
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 or anything else.
00:16:56 --> 00:16:58 The day that you are born,
00:16:59 --> 00:17:01 you are born to die.
00:17:01 --> 00:17:07 I don't know if anyone's ever brought to you,
00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 or you brought anyone,
00:17:09 --> 00:17:12 like those beautiful flowers from the forest.
00:17:13 --> 00:17:13 Gorgeous.
00:17:13 --> 00:17:13 You know,
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 something I do for my wife
00:17:14 --> 00:17:16 all the time.
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 And,
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 actually,
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 I don't,
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 because I think it's such a waste.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:23 I mean,
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 how long do they last?
00:17:26 --> 00:17:26 A week?
00:17:27 --> 00:17:27 Like,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:27 you know,
00:17:28 --> 00:17:28 you prolong,
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 you put things in it,
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 whatever.
00:17:30 --> 00:17:33 Why do they only last for a week?
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 Because they're dead.
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 By the time,
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 it leaves the shop
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 and goes in your,
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 they're already dead.
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 They're dead
00:17:42 --> 00:17:44 because they've been cut off
00:17:44 --> 00:17:47 from the source of their life.
00:17:48 --> 00:17:50 And we are like those flowers,
00:17:50 --> 00:17:52 beautiful for a season.
00:17:52 --> 00:17:54 A really short time, in fact,
00:17:54 --> 00:17:56 but we are ultimately cut off
00:17:56 --> 00:17:58 from the source of our life,
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 and we are dead.
00:17:59 --> 00:18:01 We are the walking dead.
00:18:01 --> 00:18:02 And John says,
00:18:03 --> 00:18:05 if you put your life
00:18:05 --> 00:18:07 into Jesus' hands,
00:18:07 --> 00:18:09 if you believe
00:18:09 --> 00:18:11 that he is the Christ,
00:18:12 --> 00:18:15 he will give you life
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 instead of death.
00:18:16 --> 00:18:18 if not,
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 you are already dead.
00:18:21 --> 00:18:23 See,
00:18:23 --> 00:18:24 this is,
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 this is the context
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 of the command
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 to love,
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 and I'll show you
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 the link
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 between the two.
00:18:31 --> 00:18:31 But,
00:18:31 --> 00:18:33 just to assure you,
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 in case
00:18:34 --> 00:18:36 you haven't heard this before,
00:18:36 --> 00:18:36 Christianity
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 is not just
00:18:37 --> 00:18:39 a touch of religion
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 and morality
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 in your life.
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 It's not just
00:18:42 --> 00:18:43 about coming to church
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 on a Sunday night.
00:18:44 --> 00:18:46 it is a matter
00:18:46 --> 00:18:47 of life and death.
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 It is centered
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 on Jesus,
00:18:51 --> 00:18:51 the one
00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 who has power
00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 to give you
00:18:54 --> 00:18:55 life.
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 Love,
00:18:58 --> 00:18:58 life,
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 and death.
00:19:00 --> 00:19:01 Love,
00:19:01 --> 00:19:02 and glory.
00:19:04 --> 00:19:05 What's the link
00:19:05 --> 00:19:05 between life,
00:19:06 --> 00:19:06 and death,
00:19:06 --> 00:19:07 and love?
00:19:07 --> 00:19:10 Come with me
00:19:10 --> 00:19:12 to verse 31,
00:19:14 --> 00:19:16 to the sort of
00:19:16 --> 00:19:17 immediate context
00:19:17 --> 00:19:18 of the love
00:19:18 --> 00:19:19 commandment.
