In Luke 15:8–10, Jesus tells of a woman who loses one of ten precious coins and refuses to stop searching until she finds it. These were not ordinary coins—they were part of a semedi, a bridal headdress that symbolized commitment and love. Losing even one would have been deeply personal.
In today’s episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef brings this parable to life by explaining the dark, cramped homes of first-century Israel, where a lost coin could easily disappear into cracks in a dirt floor. The woman lights a lamp, sweeps carefully, and searches relentlessly because what was lost was precious to her.
That is the heart of Jesus’ message.
The parable of the lost sheep shows how individualized Christ’s pursuit is. The parable of the lost coin shows how deeply personal His love is. You are not a nameless face in the crowd. The all-knowing, all-seeing God knows you, seeks you, and loves you personally.
But there is another sobering detail: the coin was lost inside the house. Dr. Youssef reminds listeners that it is possible to attend church, participate in Christian community, and still never personally repent and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. God’s love is not abstract, conditional, or passive—it is constant, active, and sacrificial. At the cross, Jesus endured suffering so that lost sinners might be found.
Prayer: Lord, help me to live in the freedom that Your tremendous love brings, that I might be holy as You are holy. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?” (Luke 15:8).
