In Exodus 24:3-4, Moses relays all of the Lord's laws to the Israelites, who unanimously vow obedience. Moses then records these divine words, constructs an altar with twelve pillars (representing the twelve tribes), and prepares for the sacrificial sealing of the covenant.
These verses form a powerful "type" (a prophetic pattern) for the Return of the Lord, operating in three distinct ways:
The Written Word vs. The Spoken Word
In verse 3, the people verbally agree to the terms. In verse 4, Moses writes them down.
Theological parallel: Verbal commitments are easily forgotten, but the written Word is immutable.
Relating to the Return: Jesus declared that heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will never pass away (Matthew 24:35). At the Second Coming, He returns as the ultimate "Living Word" (Revelation 19:13). The written covenant reminds believers of His absolute authority and imminent return. The Pattern of the Altar and the Twelve Pillars
Moses builds an altar and sets up twelve pillars.
Theological parallel: The altar signifies sacrifice and worship, while the twelve pillars represent the unification and restoration of God's people. No
Relating to the Return: In the New Testament, the twelve pillars prefigure the restoration of Israel and the twelve apostles ruling over the twelve tribes (Matthew 19:28). When the Lord returns, He gathers His scattered people from the four winds (Matthew 24:31) to establish His eternal kingdom. The Mediator Ascending and the People Waiting
Exodus 24 establishes a rigid hierarchy of access: only Moses is permitted to draw near to God's immediate presence on the mountain, while the elders and the people remain at a distance, waiting for his return (Exodus 24:1-2)
Theological parallel: Moses acts as a mediator between the holy God and a sinful people.
Relating to the Return: The author of Hebrews (Hebrews 9:11-15) explains that Jesus entered the true, heavenly holy of holies with His own blood to secure eternal redemption. The church today is in an "Exodus 24" waiting period: our Mediator has ascended to the Father, and we are eagerly watching and waiting for His glorious return (Titus 2:13).
