Deuteronomy 17:19
Today we are going to explain, amplify and expand Deuteronomy 17 verse 19, especially as it relates to daily Bible study and the fear of the Lord which is also respect for His Name, the Name which is above all Names and the vital importance of carefully observing all th words of God’s instructions.
Deuteronomy 17:19 commands believers to keep God’s Word with them and read it daily. This lifelong, daily study of Scripture cultivates a reverent fear of the Lord and grounds us in respect for His holy Name. In turn, this sacred reverence translates into the careful, precise observance of all His instructions.

  1. The Daily Discipline of Bible Study
In Deuteronomy 17:18-19, where God commanded that the king of Israel handwrite his own copy of the law, keep it with him constantly, and read it every day. This was a safeguard against the temptations of power, wealth, and pride.

  • The "With Him" Principle: The scroll wasn't just for ceremonial occasions; it was meant to be a constant companion. Today, this translates to keeping the Word of God accessible—whether in physical print or via apps like the Bible Gateway or the YouVersion Bible App.

  • Daily Transformation: Daily study of the Bible renews the mind. It prevents spiritual amnesia, ensuring that God’s principles, rather than worldly desires, guide daily thoughts, decisions, and leadership.

  1. The Fear of the Lord and Respect for His Name
The verse explicitly states that the goal of daily reading is "that he may learn to fear the LORD his God".

  • Deep Reverence: Biblical fear is not terror; it is a profound, awe-filled reverence and a deep respect for His Name. The Name of God represents His entire character, His majesty, and His holiness. In both the Old and New Testaments, the Name of God is above every other name (Philippians 2:9). Fearing God means treating His Name and His presence with absolute honor. And stopping phrases like “Oh my God”in its tracks by recognizing the blasphemy that this phrase involves. (Exodus 20:7), which commands: "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain".

  • The Antidote to Arrogance: Awe-filled respect for God’s Name eradicates human pride. When we recognize who God is and the authority of His Name, it humbles us, keeping our hearts from lifting themselves above others.

  1. Carefully Observing All His Instructions
Deuteronomy 17:19 highlights the ultimate fruit of studying the Word and fearing the Lord: "...be careful to follow all the words of this law and these decrees."

  • Precision over Preferences: "Carefully observing" requires exactness. It is a commitment not to cherry-pick which commandments to follow or to twist God's instructions to fit modern culture, but to submit entirely to all of His words.

  • The Evidence of Love: Jesus affirmed this in the New Testament, stating: "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments" (John 14:15). True respect for the Name of God is always proven by obedience to His Word.
