00:00:20 --> 00:00:25 Father, these words from Jesus, which cut right to our heart,
00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 and we can explain away,
00:00:27 --> 00:00:30 and just by saying that he's using hyperbole,
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 Lord, I pray that we might not do that.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:34 Help us to hear the full weight of them,
00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 and Lord, to walk away from here,
00:00:37 --> 00:00:41 challenge to rethink the basic principles of our life,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:42 and we ask it for your sake.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:43 Amen.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 So you're shopping in Chatswood Chase,
00:00:48 --> 00:00:49 you're walking through the stores,
00:00:50 --> 00:00:53 you're browsing a wide variety of items,
00:00:54 --> 00:00:55 and finally it happens.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 Something catches your eye.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:00 You're excited by it.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:02 You hold it.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:03 And you know you want it.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:07 There is one final hurdle remaining.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:09 It's the price.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 So you reach down for the postage stamp size tag,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 dangling from the greatest treasure that you've ever seen,
00:01:16 --> 00:01:18 but now sits within your hands.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:20 And this is it.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:22 It's the price tag moment.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:22 Number one.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 Numbers start to come into focus.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:27 Is it too much?
00:01:29 --> 00:01:30 50% more than you'd guessed.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 100% more than you can afford.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:36 2% more than you need to spend on something like this.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:38 But still,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:40 you stand there
00:01:40 --> 00:01:42 making the decision
00:01:42 --> 00:01:43 to buy
00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 or not to buy.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:47 And you ask yourself
00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 the all-important question,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 is it worth it?
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 We face those price tag moments
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 every day.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:56 That is,
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 we are consistently doing
00:01:58 --> 00:02:00 cost-benefit analysis,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:02 asking ourselves the question,
00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 is it worth it?
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 It's because the society
00:02:07 --> 00:02:08 which we live in
00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 is a materialistic,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:10 consumer society,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 and we are forced
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 to make those
00:02:13 --> 00:02:14 value judgments.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 We make our choices,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:18 one price tag moment
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 after another.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:20 And of course,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 the price tag moment
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 is different for us all.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:24 For one of us,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:26 $100,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 spending $100 on fabric
00:02:29 --> 00:02:30 is a no-brainer.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:32 For some of us,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:34 it is a
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 significant thing
00:02:37 --> 00:02:37 to spend $100
00:02:37 --> 00:02:38 on fabric.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 You ask kids,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 $100 on lollies,
00:02:42 --> 00:02:43 no problem at all.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 It's a great way
00:02:44 --> 00:02:45 to spend money.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:47 For others,
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 it's ridiculous.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:49 You'd rather spend
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 your $100
00:02:50 --> 00:02:51 on a shirt.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:53 And that's what makes
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 Jesus' passage here
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 for us so pertinent.
00:02:57 --> 00:02:58 He's on his way
00:02:58 --> 00:02:58 to Jerusalem,
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 as we know.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:00 He's on his way
00:03:00 --> 00:03:00 to Jerusalem to die.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:02 And along the way,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 he teaches his disciples,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 he tells them
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 what they can expect
00:03:06 --> 00:03:07 if they're going to
00:03:07 --> 00:03:07 come and follow him.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:08 That is,
00:03:08 --> 00:03:08 they're going to take up
00:03:08 --> 00:03:09 their cross
00:03:09 --> 00:03:10 and follow him.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 And in the process
00:03:12 --> 00:03:12 of what he does
00:03:12 --> 00:03:13 is he clears up
00:03:13 --> 00:03:14 their misconceptions
00:03:14 --> 00:03:15 of what it actually
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 means to be
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 his disciple.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:18 He talks about
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 things like trust,
00:03:20 --> 00:03:20 conviction,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 singled-mindedness,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 persecution.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 And now he turns
00:03:25 --> 00:03:26 his attention
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 to one of,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 if not the major,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:29 distraction
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 for the Christian life.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:31 In fact,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 I think every
00:03:32 --> 00:03:33 scholar I read
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 on the passage
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 said this is
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 the major,
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 major distraction
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 for the Christian life.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 Jesus sets it up
00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 in a way
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 that he sets up
00:03:42 --> 00:03:43 nothing else
00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 in the New Testament
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 and that is greed,
00:03:47 --> 00:03:47 the disease
00:03:47 --> 00:03:48 of possessionitis.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 the issue is raised
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 because a guy,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 you see it there
00:03:53 --> 00:03:53 in the passage,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:54 pick up your Bibles,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 Luke chapter 12
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 verse 13.
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 This guy calls out
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 in the crowd
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 and he says,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:02 teacher,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:03 tell my brother
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 to divide the inheritance
00:04:05 --> 00:04:05 with me.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 But Jesus picks it up,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 he knows what's going on,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 he knows his brother,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 this guy doesn't want
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 an arbiter
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 between him
00:04:12 --> 00:04:13 and his brother.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 He wants someone
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 who's going to command
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 his brother
00:04:16 --> 00:04:17 to cuff up the cash
00:04:17 --> 00:04:17 and give it to me.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 He gets a hint
00:04:19 --> 00:04:19 of greed
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 and so he takes
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 an opportunity
00:04:22 --> 00:04:22 to teach
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 and he says,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 watch out.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:26 Be on your guard
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 against all kinds
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 of greed.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 A man's life
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 does not consist
00:04:30 --> 00:04:30 in the abundance
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 of his possessions.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 Watch out!
00:04:34 --> 00:04:34 It's like you're
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 driving the car,
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 you've been distracted
00:04:38 --> 00:04:38 for a moment,
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 you're looking over there
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 and your passenger
00:04:41 --> 00:04:41 says,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:42 watch out
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 because you're driving
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 straight over
00:04:45 --> 00:04:45 pedestrian crossing
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 and someone's walking
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 in front of your car.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:49 It's that kind of
00:04:49 --> 00:04:49 watch out!
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 Danger!
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 Be on your guard
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 against all kinds
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 of greed.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 You see,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 what Jesus does
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 into this greed-ridden
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 consumer world,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:05 he comes with
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 his own
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 price tag moment,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:09 his own
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 price tag question
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 and this is it.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 In Luke chapter 9
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 verse 25,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 what good is it
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 for a person
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 to gain the whole
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 world and yet
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 forfeit their soul?
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 That's Jesus'
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 price tag question.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 Greed affects us
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 all in one way
00:05:29 --> 00:05:29 or another.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 The difficult thing
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 for us is that greed
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 in the society
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 in which we live
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 is a huge blind spot
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 and I think for us
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 therefore it's the most
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 socially acceptable
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 sin in our culture.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 We don't see it
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 as big as it is
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 but it's the one
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 thing that probably
00:05:44 --> 00:05:44 more than anything
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 else I think
00:05:45 --> 00:05:45 what Jesus would
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 be saying here
00:05:46 --> 00:05:46 that would be
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 sucking the life
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 out of spiritual
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 integrity
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 consistently.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:53 It was American
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 millionaire Malcolm
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 Forbes who coined
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 the famous phrase
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 he who dies
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 with the most toys
00:05:58 --> 00:05:58 wins
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 and this is the
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 philosophy that
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 most of us live
00:06:01 --> 00:06:01 by
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 and so here again
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 comes the voice
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 of Jesus
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 and this time
00:06:07 --> 00:06:07 to the person
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 who thinks that
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 their security
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 and meaning
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 comes from
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 building bigger
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 and bigger barns
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 who thinks that
00:06:15 --> 00:06:16 life is about
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 getting as much
00:06:17 --> 00:06:17 as you possibly
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 can
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 and this is
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 Jesus price tag
00:06:21 --> 00:06:21 moment
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 you fool
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 this very night
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 your life will be
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 demanded from you
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 you fool
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 can you imagine
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 getting to the
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 end of your life
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 and instead of
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 hearing well done
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 good and faithful
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 servant
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 you hear the words
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 from King Jesus
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 you fool
00:06:45 --> 00:06:48 you fool
00:06:48 --> 00:06:52 you've read the
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 price tag
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 moment all wrong
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 he who dies
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 with the most toys
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 still dies
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 like everyone else
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 and will still stand
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 before the judgment
00:07:00 --> 00:07:00 throne of God
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 like everyone else
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 and he will put
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 a huge zero value
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 against all the
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 things that you've
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 spent your life
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 chasing
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 you fool
00:07:09 --> 00:07:14 this passage
00:07:14 --> 00:07:14 here is a passage
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 to challenge us
00:07:16 --> 00:07:16 to take again
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 a look at the
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 price tag
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 and to
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 work out
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 what is really
00:07:21 --> 00:07:21 worth
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 treasuring
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 and that's
00:07:24 --> 00:07:24 the bottom line
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 here
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 the bottom line
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 here is not
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 valuing the things
00:07:28 --> 00:07:28 of eternity
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 enough
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 that's the danger
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 and valuing the
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 things of this
00:07:32 --> 00:07:32 world too
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 highly
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 on the surface
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 though you could
00:07:35 --> 00:07:35 say this guy
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 has made some
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 wide choices
00:07:37 --> 00:07:37 he's made some
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 good investments
00:07:38 --> 00:07:38 even
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 he has a bumper
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 crop and rather
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 than wasting it
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 he makes more
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 and more storage
00:07:44 --> 00:07:44 space
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 seems like a
00:07:46 --> 00:07:46 reasonable thing
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 to do
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 that's because
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 that's what we

00:08:04 --> 00:08:04 of life
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 his desires
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 and his attitude
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 that lie behind
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 his decision
00:08:08 --> 00:08:08 to build bigger
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 and bigger barns
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 are there
00:08:10 --> 00:08:10 consistently
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 if you read

00:08:11 --> 00:08:11 passage

00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 take life easy
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 and eat
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 and drink
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 and be merry
00:08:36 --> 00:08:38 but Jesus says
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 he's read the
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 price tag
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 all wrong
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 and he joins
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 the dead
00:08:43 --> 00:08:43 and the
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 departed
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 and he has
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 made no
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 provision for
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 eternity
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 and Jesus
