00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 and one-time federal secretary of CMS in Australia.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:35 He was a scholar of both Hebrew and Greek language.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:37 He wrote three biblical commentaries,
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 one on Exodus, one on Galatians,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:42 and one on Mark's gospel,
00:00:43 --> 00:00:45 which has been a significant help for me
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 throughout this series on Mark.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:51 I met Dr. Cole in 1997
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 while I was a student at Moore College.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 Although I was totally unaware of who he was.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:04 I was in a New Testament lecture on the book of Galatians,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 a book that Dr. Cole had written a commentary on.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 And I'd noticed on previous occasions
00:01:11 --> 00:01:15 this elderly gentleman who sat at the back of the lecture room
00:01:15 --> 00:01:16 taking notes.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 And he didn't appear in any other lectures,
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 so I assume he wasn't a second-year Moore College student.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 And it seemed a little strange
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 that to be a student,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:30 that why was he there?
00:01:30 --> 00:01:31 For me as a student,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 why is this elderly gentleman there?
00:01:34 --> 00:01:35 And in my view,
00:01:35 --> 00:01:37 this is a little bit ironic,
00:01:37 --> 00:01:38 but a little bit strange,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:39 but in my view,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 he resembled my lecturer.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:45 And I just assumed that this elderly gentleman
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 was coming along encouraging his son
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 as he lectured in this particular subject.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 And so one day,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:53 at this very same subject,
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 this elderly gentleman came in
00:01:55 --> 00:01:56 and he sat beside me.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 And I struck up a conversation with Dr. Cole,
00:02:00 --> 00:02:01 unaware of who he was,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 but my curiosity got the better of me
00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 and I asked him,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 why are you here?
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 I don't see you in anything else.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:09 Why are you here?
00:02:10 --> 00:02:11 And his response to me was,
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 I've had a long interest in the Greek language
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 and in Galatians particular.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 And I, being totally clueless
00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 and potentially the arrogance of youth,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:26 I said something to him
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 that went something like this,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 it's never too late to learn Greek.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:38 And how personally encouraged I was
00:02:38 --> 00:02:41 that someone of his stage of life
00:02:41 --> 00:02:42 was choosing to pick it up.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:47 Somewhat embarrassed
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 when the guy who was sitting beside me
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 over morning tea said,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:53 you idiot,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 do you have any idea who you were talking to?
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 None whatsoever.
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 None whatsoever.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:00 I was in the presence
00:03:00 --> 00:03:03 of one of the great disciples of the kingdom,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 of the biblical scholarship,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 the Greek language Galatians,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 at no concept of who it was
00:03:09 --> 00:03:10 that I was sitting beside in that moment.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 And is that not the issue
00:03:14 --> 00:03:15 as we've been journeying
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 through the first section of Mark's gospel,
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 first eight chapters?
00:03:19 --> 00:03:23 Who is this Jesus who we're coming to?
00:03:23 --> 00:03:24 Who is this person we're sitting beside?
00:03:26 --> 00:03:26 And of course for us,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:27 for the readers,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:31 the very first sentence of Mark's gospel
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 answers the question for us.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:33 It says,
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 the beginning of the good news
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 about Jesus the Messiah,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:38 the Son of God.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 Jesus is the especially anointed one of God
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 who has the task of redeeming the world
00:03:47 --> 00:03:49 back to God.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:51 And the very first words of Jesus
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 in his gospel make that clear.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 The kingdom of God has come near.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 God has broken into his world
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 in the person of Christ.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 So we know who Jesus is,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 the readers.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 Now some of us here might remember
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 the American television series Columbo.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:17 I say some of us
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 because it was in the 1970s and 80s.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:22 It was a show that popularised,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 the first of its kind in fact,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 the inverted detective story.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 Which begins by showing us the crime
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 and the perpetrator
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 right from the very start.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 And the plot therefore doesn't run
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 on the standard whodunit plot
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 of Midsummer murders,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 that sort of thing.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 But instead revolves around the criminal
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 who is finally caught and exposed
00:04:48 --> 00:04:50 and it is referred to as the
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 how catch them.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 How you're going to catch them theme.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 And this is exactly how Mark reads.
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 Mark makes it clear
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 who Jesus is
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 right from the very start
00:05:03 --> 00:05:03 for the readers.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:07 And then he reveals
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 the details
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 of Jesus
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 backing up the claim
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 of who he is.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 And we're following the narrative
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 to find out
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 will people see Jesus
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 for who he is?
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 First five chapters
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 we're seeing that Jesus
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 is staggering
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 divine authority
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 to conquer Satan,
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 to forgive sins,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 to heal the sick,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:28 to tell
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 the sea,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 the oceans,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 to be calm
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 and the wind
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 to stop
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 and overcome death.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 And later in this chapter
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 which we did get to
00:05:39 --> 00:05:39 in our reading
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 he miraculously
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 feeds 5 people
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 with a boy's lunchbox
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 and then
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 he walks on water
00:05:47 --> 00:05:47 in the middle
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 of this deep lake.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 He is consistently
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 through this gospel
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 backing up
00:05:53 --> 00:05:53 the claim
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 that Mark says
00:05:55 --> 00:05:55 at the beginning
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 he is the Messiah,
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 the Son of God.
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 He's the rescuer
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 and he is the redeemer.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 And in fact
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 the two big miracles
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 at the end of Mark 6
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 are reminiscent
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 of the big act
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 of salvation
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 in the Old Testament
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 the rescue of Egypt
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 the rescue of God's people
00:06:14 --> 00:06:14 out of Egypt.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:16 Three times
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 at the end of Mark 6
00:06:18 --> 00:06:18 we are told
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 that they are
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 in a remote place
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 just like Israel
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 was in the wilderness
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 after the escape.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 Jesus is the good shepherd
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 teaching and leading
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 his people
00:06:28 --> 00:06:28 in the wilderness.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 He miraculously
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 feeds
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 his people
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 just like
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 was in the wilderness
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 under Moses.

00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 for who he is.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 it's not good
00:07:27 --> 00:07:27 enough
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 to make
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 the statement
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 of
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 the earlier
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 chapters.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 You see it
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 in chapter 3
00:07:35 --> 00:07:35 a couple of weeks
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 ago
00:07:36 --> 00:07:36 when Takeshi
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 and John
00:07:37 --> 00:07:37 were preaching.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 The religious leaders
00:07:39 --> 00:07:39 thought Jesus
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 was bad.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 His family
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 thought he was
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 mad.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:44 The average
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 Australian
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 thinks he's
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 a good bloke.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 Not good
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 enough.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:54 Again in chapter 3
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 the Herodians
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 and the Pharisees
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 they plotted
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 to kill him.
00:07:59 --> 00:07:59 They teamed up.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 The Herodians
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 and the Pharisees
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 are like the left wing
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 and the right wing.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:03 They don't agree
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 on anything.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 But in this case
