00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 and challenge him in Matthew.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:23 Do you have an answer ready for this kind of questions?
00:00:26 --> 00:00:28 Just don't let my phone echo.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 So, what do you think?
00:00:35 --> 00:00:40 When we were on a college mission back in 2018,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 we were asked to finish an unfinished sentence,
00:00:43 --> 00:00:44 Jesus is,
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 and be ready to share with people that we met.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:55 So, someone wrote in and said that Jesus is worth checking out.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 And others say Jesus is hard to believe.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 One person wrote in and said Jesus is blue cheese.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:05 He said,
00:01:05 --> 00:01:11 In 2015, a survey of most hated foods in the UK
00:01:11 --> 00:01:15 found that over one-third of people hated blue cheese.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:18 It was a seventh on the list.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 Generally, cheese is loved,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:23 just not that variety.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:27 I don't think people would mind that others like blue cheese
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 as long as the smell doesn't affect me.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 How is Jesus like blue cheese?
00:01:35 --> 00:01:37 If Christians want to believe in Jesus,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:38 then fine,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:40 but it's not for me.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 And I don't want them to leave me or talk about him.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:50 2017 research showed that 68% of Australians
00:01:50 --> 00:01:54 follow a religion or have spiritual beliefs,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 and 45% identify with Christianity.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 The biggest changes in that survey is
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 one-third of people don't identify themselves with any religion.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 People are still talking, though.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 Just over half of people reported
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 having religious conversations with friends
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 often or on occasion.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 Perhaps talking about the meaning of life
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 with people you trust smell less.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:29 Today, my hope and wish
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 are to help you come to an answer
00:02:31 --> 00:02:33 for those Jesus questions
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 and to show you who is this Jesus
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 that we believe in.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 If you do not know Jesus,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 I hope this introduction
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 will whet your appetite towards him.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 If you are a follower,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 I hope you will be more equipped and ready
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 to fill in the blank of Jesus is.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:57 As Apostle Peter told us in 1 Peter 3.15,
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 always be prepared to give an answer
00:03:01 --> 00:03:07 to everyone who asks you
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 to give the reason for the hope that you have.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 who asks you to give the reason
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 for the hope that you have.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 We are spending time studying
00:03:19 --> 00:03:21 and investigating the Apostle Creek
00:03:21 --> 00:03:25 because it is a very good starting point for us
00:03:25 --> 00:03:27 to find an answer for who Jesus is.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 The Apostle Creek points us to the Trinity
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 and how they are three persons and one God.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 And its structure places a lot of emphasis
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 on the second person of the Trinity, Jesus.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:47 Because Christians are defined by one primary mark,
00:03:47 --> 00:03:48 we believe in,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 and are disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 And it's not enough for any Christian
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 to simply say,
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 I love Jesus, I follow Jesus.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 Many who say they love Jesus and follow Jesus
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 do not follow Jesus as he has revealed himself
00:04:05 --> 00:04:06 in Scripture.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 They are following an image
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 that is not the superior image of Jesus
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 that we feel in the Bible.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 We read before in Hebrews 1, 34,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 the Son is a radiance of God's glory
00:04:19 --> 00:04:22 and the exact representation of his being,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 sustaining all things by his powerful words.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 He became as much superior to the angels
00:04:29 --> 00:04:33 as the name he has inherited is superior to this.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 If you do a search on Google,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 these are the image of Jesus that you will see.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 And if you are in China,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 going to a government-sanctioned church,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 you will be introduced to Jesus
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 that looks like this.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 A Chinaman.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:01 And most scholars will refer to an image
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 as this one.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 As the most accurate Jesus,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 taking into account the common features
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 of the first century Middle Eastern men.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 If picture is worth a thousand words,
00:05:17 --> 00:05:20 which image of Jesus should we think of
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 when we consider who Jesus is?
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 Shall we worry and be concerned
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 that Jesus has been presented
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 as certain ethnicity?
00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 Is it really evil to present a Jesus
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 that appeased Chinese to the Chinese people
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 as people of color
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 accused European and Americans
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 of distorting the truth of Jesus
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 by presenting a Jesus of light-colored skin?
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 As we confess that we believe in Jesus Christ,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 God's only Son, our Lord,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 according to the Apostle Creek,
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 we are calling,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 we are being called to consider Jesus' true identity
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 and his mission
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 as they are revealed in Scripture,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 beyond any image we can come up with
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 with our limited mind.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:13 As I have read out from,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 as we have read out from 1 Hebrews 1, 4,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 it says,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 Jesus became
00:06:21 --> 00:06:26 as much superior to the angels
00:06:26 --> 00:06:28 as the name he has inherited
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 is superior to theirs.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 So what is the name that Jesus has inherited?
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 We have the first name Jesus,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 which is Greek for
00:06:39 --> 00:06:42 Josiah means God is Savior.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 But what about Jesus' last name?
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 Have you ever thought about Jesus' last name?
00:06:49 --> 00:06:49 Is it Christ?
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 Christ is not a surname.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 It's a title.
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 It's the Greek word for Messiah,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 meaning the unhaunted one of God.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 So, Jesus Christ is not merely a name.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 It is a theological preposition.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 By saying Jesus Christ,
00:07:12 --> 00:07:16 we have made a profoundly theological statement.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 We are declaring Jesus
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 is the atonement of God,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:21 the Savior.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 It is a claim that
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 all the promises given to Israel
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 regarding all human beings
00:07:29 --> 00:07:32 are fulfilled in this one incarnate man,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 Jesus Christ.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 God saved us by this specific person,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 Jesus,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 who is also God himself,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 because
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 in Hebrews,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:43 it says,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 Jesus sustains
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 all things
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 by his powerful words.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 When you say Jesus Christ,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 even when you are using it
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 in a cursing,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 non-Christian way,
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 you are proposing a truth
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 that Jesus is the Christ,
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 the Savior of sinners,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 the sustainer of all things.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 when Christians declare
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 we believe in Jesus Christ,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 we are declaring that
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 we do not believe in a Christ
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 of our own imagination,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 but in a Christ of Scripture.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 We are declaring that
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 we believe in the Christ,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 the Messiah,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 the Atonement Savior,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 they are believed in
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 and declared by
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 every generation of true Christians.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 If you are a Christian,
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 it says true of you
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 when you make that declaration.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:37 At this point,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 if you are non-Christian,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 you might say,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 this is exactly
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 why I don't want
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 to be a Christian.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 This is why I think
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 I don't need to be a Christian,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 because I'm okay.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 I'm looking after myself
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 and my family well.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 I don't need a Savior.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:53 And in fact,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 I'm doing something actively
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 to save this planet
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 and humankind.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 All this talk about
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 needing a Savior's own name,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 and I will think about religion
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 when I need a question.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 I want to congratulate you
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 on your success in life.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 It's not easy,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 even now a day,
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 to achieve stability in life.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 And you are willing
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 to make sacrifice
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 to not just look after
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 your immediate family,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 but the wider community.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 But at the same time,
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 I would like to ask you
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 to think again
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 about your need for Jesus.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 Of course,
00:09:33 --> 00:09:33 being saved
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 does not necessarily mean
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 all your life's trouble
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 and problems
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 will go away.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 But also,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 being successful in life
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 also does not mean
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 you don't need to be saved.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 If you're honest to yourself,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 or if we are honest to ourselves,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 we will admit that
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 there's a lot of things
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 and issues
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 beyond our control.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 things like greed,
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 jealousy,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:01 unforgiving,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 injustice,
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 and cruelty.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 Those are things
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 that Christians call sins.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 They are beyond
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 our ability to deal with.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 We need to be saved
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 from sin,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 and salvation
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 is found in no one else.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 For there is no other name
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 under heaven
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 given to mankind
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 by which we must be saved.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:29 We read in Hebrew
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 that Jesus' name
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 is much superior
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 to the angels.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 Our understanding
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 of who Christ is
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 defined
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 how we live our life.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 Living in the certainty
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 and assurance of Christ
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 as our savior
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 and sustainer
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 is so much different
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 to living in the uncertainty
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 and fear
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 of Christ
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 as our judge.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 When we say
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 we believe in Jesus Christ,
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 we are making
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 a theological statement
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 that Jesus
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 is the only means
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 of our salvation,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 and there is no other name
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 under heaven
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 given to mankind
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 by which we must be saved.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 Jesus is our only salvation
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 because he is
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 God's only son,
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 and that is what
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 Christians cherish
00:11:20 --> 00:11:20 and treasure.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:23 we have a God
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 that came to us
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 and become part
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 of what he has created
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 so to free us
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 from our sins,
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 from the troubles
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 we have caused
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 to ourselves.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 Jesus is God's only son,
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 means
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 God the son,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 Jesus,
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 and God the father
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 are both God
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 and of the same being.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 at Nicene Creed,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 which was written
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 after Apostle Creed
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 to give further explanation.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:54 It says,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 Jesus is the only son of God,
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 eternally begotten
00:11:59 --> 00:11:59 of the father,
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 God from God,
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 light from light,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:04 true God
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 from true God,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 begotten not made
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 of one being
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 with the father.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 Through him
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 all things were made.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:16 Jesus and God the father

00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 than the angels
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 for a little while,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 now crowned
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 with glory
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 and honor
00:12:59 --> 00:13:01 because he suffered death
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 so that by the grace

00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 of Jesus

00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 that we have
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 a brother
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 in heaven.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 I may be poor
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 but I have a brother
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 who is rich
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 and is a king.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 Will he permit me
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 to be in need
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 when he is
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 on his throne?
