Who Is He?

Passage: Mark 1:1-45
00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 Mark's biography of Jesus is written about 65 AD.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:08 It's about 35 years after the death of Jesus.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:13 And Mark writes really vividly the stories and the sayings of Jesus
00:00:13 --> 00:00:17 and there are people who are still alive who had witnessed those events.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:23 And they were events which were so significant to those who witnessed them
00:00:23 --> 00:00:26 that they told the story over and over and over again.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:31 It's the first and it's the earliest account of Jesus.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 Really unusually a number of the New Testament letters are written
00:00:35 --> 00:00:36 before the Gospels are written down.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 A Gospel.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:46 It's a declaration about who Jesus was and what he came to do
00:00:46 --> 00:00:49 and Mark is so important and so accurate
00:00:49 --> 00:00:53 that Luke and Matthew will later write their own biographies
00:00:53 --> 00:00:56 biographies based on large parts of Mark.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 Matthew and Luke use lots of Mark in them.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 I was surprised as I prepared for today
00:01:02 --> 00:01:07 because I saw that this is an Italian Gospel.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 It's written to an audience like us,
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 people in the Western world, people from the Western world,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:15 people not from the Jewish world.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 Mark tells the story about a Jewish man called Jesus
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 but he uses Roman words and expressions and ideas.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 He talks about legions of demons,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 about the army as the praetorium,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 the commander as a centurion.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 He uses Roman money and expressions
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 when he talks about a denarius
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 and two small copper lepta,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 two Roman tiny coins that the widows put into the treasury.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 And even when he talks about the trial of Jesus,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 he tells the events in an Italian way,
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 in terms of four watches of the night
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 instead of the Jewish way with three watches.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 And I think if he was here telling us the story this morning,
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 he would be painting the picture
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 with terms that we understand.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:07 He'd be telling the same story
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 but he'd talk about dollars and cents
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 and army and SAS and parliament
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 and lieutenant colonels to tell the story about Jesus
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 in ways and means with which we could readily identify.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 So you ask this question, who is Mark?
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 Colossians chapter 4 tells us that he's Barnabas' cousin.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 Acts chapter 15 tells us
00:02:29 --> 00:02:33 that he is the source of a sharp disagreement
00:02:33 --> 00:02:35 between Paul and Barnabas.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 He'd been part of Paul and Barnabas' team
00:02:39 --> 00:02:41 on the first missionary journey
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 and it seems like he got cold feet along the way
00:02:44 --> 00:02:45 and he came home.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 And they're getting ready to go out on their next journey
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 and Paul feels let down by him
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 and says, I don't want him to go with me.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 So Paul and Barnabas divide over Mark.
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 And later on in 2 Timothy chapter 4
00:02:59 --> 00:03:02 when Paul says, get Mark and bring him with you
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 because he is helpful to me in my ministry,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 it clearly shows that they'd been reconciled.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:14 Perhaps even more significant is Mark's connection to Peter
00:03:14 --> 00:03:19 and you get a glimpse of that in 1 Peter chapter 5 verse 13.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 Peter writes,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:39 It's strange language but there's this clear connection
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 between Peter and Mark.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 When you hear Babylon in the Bible
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 you have to think evil empire.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:50 Peter is using hidden language.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 He's writing from the capital of the world.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 The capital of the world at this time is Rome.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 So when he says,
00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 She who is in Babylon
00:03:58 --> 00:04:01 it's a way of saying the church who is in Rome
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 sends greetings
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 and so does Mark
00:04:04 --> 00:04:05 who's here as well.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:09 1 Peter
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 is probably,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 this letter is probably written
00:04:13 --> 00:04:15 just before Peter's death
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 and history tells us
00:04:17 --> 00:04:18 that he was crucified
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 in a similar way to the Apostle Paul
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 upside down in a Roman circus
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 by Emperor Nero.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:26 Mark has been
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 a companion.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 So you see out of Acts
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 and you see out of the New Testament letters
00:04:30 --> 00:04:32 that Mark has been
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 both a companion
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 of the Apostle Paul
00:04:35 --> 00:04:36 and a companion
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 of the Apostle Peter.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 And he's also been
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 on ministry assignment
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 with Barnabas,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:43 his cousin,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 as well.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 And so he's heard
00:04:48 --> 00:04:49 the gospel preached
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 by these men.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 He's heard them
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 tell first hand
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 about their experiences
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 with the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 They were eyewitnesses.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 They heard what Jesus said.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 They saw what Jesus did.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 And Mark has probably seen
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 both of them die.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 And so he writes down
00:05:10 --> 00:05:11 this gospel.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 Key witnesses are dead.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 And what he does,
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 he commits their preaching
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 and teaching to writing.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 He writes down the message
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 which has been seeing
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 men and women
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 and boys and girls
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 from different ethnicities
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 and nations
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 coming to know
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 and believe in Christ
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 all over the world.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 So it's multicultural,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 it's multi-generational preaching
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 which has brought
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 many people to faith.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 and Mark is a preacher
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 who just wants to grab
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 people's imaginations
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 and hearts
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 with the importance
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 of this message
00:05:45 --> 00:05:45 about Jesus.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 And so he begins.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:51 The beginning
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 of the gospel
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 about Jesus Christ,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 the Son of God.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:59 And we are so familiar
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 that we just do not see
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 the glory of what he's saying.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 He makes a stunning declaration
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 from the centre
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 of the evil empire
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 where the so-called
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 God-King Nero
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 has his home.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 Mark announces
00:06:12 --> 00:06:12 the beginning
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 of the ministry
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 of Jesus the King
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 who is the actual
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 Son of God,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 the one and only
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 Son of God.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 Calling it gospel
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 is loaded as well.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 Gospels are common enough
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 word outside the Bible.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 It means glad tidings
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 but there is only
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 one known place
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 outside the Bible
00:06:31 --> 00:06:31 where it is written
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 in the singular
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 where it says
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 glad tidings
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 and it is used
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 to declare
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 one really big bit
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 of good news.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 Archaeologists
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 found a calendar
00:06:43 --> 00:06:43 inscription
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 from about 9 BC
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 referring to the birth
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 of Emperor Augustus.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 He was the king
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 when Jesus was born.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:51 And the description
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 describes
00:06:53 --> 00:06:53 the birthday
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 of Augustus
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 the king
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 the God
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 as
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 the birthday

00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 in Rome.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 Emperors in Rome
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 were worshipped
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 as deities
00:07:11 --> 00:07:11 North Korean
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 type dictators
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 their birth
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 was seen to be
00:07:14 --> 00:07:14 an event
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 of world shaping
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 significance.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:18 And so
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 with a very
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 understated
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 beginning
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 Mark shouts
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 the beginning
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 of the gospel
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 about Jesus
00:07:25 --> 00:07:25 Christ
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 the son
00:07:26 --> 00:07:26 of God
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 he's saying
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 this is a history
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 shaping moment.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 The king
00:07:33 --> 00:07:33 from heaven

00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 it has
00:07:46 --> 00:07:46 already
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 transformed
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 the existence
00:07:48 --> 00:07:48 of many
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 people
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 he's been
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 watching
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 what's
00:07:51 --> 00:07:51 been
00:07:51 --> 00:07:51 happening
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 in Peter
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 and Paul's
00:07:53 --> 00:07:53 preaching.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 The gospel
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 will finish
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 with a similar
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 declaration
00:07:58 --> 00:07:58 an Italian
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 centurion
