What's your attitude to Jesus?

00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Well, good morning. I don't know about you, but I'm still feeling kind of excited after last Sunday.
00:00:07 --> 00:00:14 Vision Sunday started with a whole heap of momentum. I went home feeling very challenged, but also very encouraged.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:21 And it was great to chat to a few people who hung around after church and just there was a visible and a tangible energy
00:00:21 --> 00:00:28 that I think people had because I think we're all getting a sense, as Deb was encouraged in South Africa,
00:00:28 --> 00:00:34 that God is on the move and that he wants to use us to make stuff happen in Chatswood and in Sydney and in the world.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:37 And so I'm excited to be in the book of Philippians with you today.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:40 And I believe God's got something significant to teach us.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:45 I just wanted to warn you that I'm not going to be able to deal with everything in the passage that we just read
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 because it is an incredibly rich passage.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 But the good news is you get to do that in your small groups during the week.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:57 So the downside is if you're not in a small group, you should get into one
00:00:57 --> 00:00:59 so that you can get into the stuff that we don't get to today.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:05 So if you're not and you want to be, can I encourage you to come and find Deb or myself or Chris Jones
00:01:05 --> 00:01:10 or maybe somebody in a seat next to you who's in one and find out how you can get into a group

00:01:26 --> 00:01:30 and have that passage open in front of you because we're going to be looking at it in detail.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 Father God, we want to thank you so much that you love us.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 We want to thank you so much that you sent Jesus for us.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 And we want to thank you so much that you have given us your word that we might know you better,
00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 that we might know what it means to live for you,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 that we might know what it is you would have us do in this life.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 And Lord, I pray this morning that you would soften our hearts,
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 that you would help us to see things that need to change
00:01:54 --> 00:01:57 and to have the honesty to acknowledge those things.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:00 And I ask that by your spirit you would make us more like Jesus
00:02:00 --> 00:02:02 so that we are better equipped to do your will.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:03 Amen.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:08 Do you ever feel like you're being set up?
00:02:08 --> 00:02:13 Like you're in a conversation and people are just kind of talking you into a corner
00:02:13 --> 00:02:14 so there's no way out of it?
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 Kids are particularly good at this.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:19 You know the scenario when the kids come home from school
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 and maybe they've gotten a really bad report
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 or maybe they've gotten in trouble
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 and the conversation starts something like,
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 Mum, you remember how you said you love me no matter what?
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 And there's kind of this implicit commitment
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 that you know is going to come back to bite you
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 when they tell you what it is that they actually have to tell you.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:42 Well, this is kind of how I feel like Paul opens this second chapter.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 He's just finished chapter 1, if you have a look at verse 27,
00:02:45 --> 00:02:51 by saying whatever happens, conduct yourself in a manner worthy of the gospel.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:58 Then he opens this next section with what I think is as close to sarcasm
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 as we'll find in the Bible.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:02 Have a look at verse 1 with me in Paul's questions.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:02 He says,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:19 Do you kind of feel how pointed that is?
00:03:20 --> 00:03:21 It's kind of like he's slapping you.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 It's like you could replace if with because, couldn't you?
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 I mean, because you have encouragement from being united with Christ.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 I mean, every encouragement we have comes from Christ.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:33 It's in him we're forgiven.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 It's in him we have hope for the future.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 It's in him we have constant support and unconditional love.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 And every encouragement comes from Christ.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:43 Every comfort comes from his love.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:47 We have fellowship because of what he did.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 We have fellowship by his spirit that he has given us,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 that draws us together even though we're completely different
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 and don't deserve it at all.
00:03:54 --> 00:04:00 And what we get from him is absolutely tenderness, compassion and love.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:03 It's kind of sarcastic.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 I mean, the grace that we have from God has transformed us.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 It's changed who we are.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:12 It is the absolute foundation of what it means for us to still be people.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:18 And Paul says, if you've got any benefit from being in Christ Jesus,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:22 if there's anything good for you about being a Christian,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:27 he means because of the blessings and benefits you have in Jesus,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:33 then, verse 2, make my joy complete by being like-minded,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 having the same love and being one in spirit and purpose.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 Paul says, be unified.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:41 Be like-minded.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 Share the purpose that he's been talking about through chapter 1.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 Share the purpose that God has given us,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 and we looked at last week, the purpose of the gospel.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:55 The purpose of partnering in seeing other people come to know Jesus,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 in seeing God glorified.
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 The purpose, back in chapter 1 and verse 7,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 of defending and confirming the gospel.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 The purpose of proclaiming it with our mouth
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 and the purpose of living it with our lives.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 It's confirming it through the people that we are.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:14 He says, be unified because of what Jesus has already done for you.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 I think sometimes we get the idea that what brings unity
00:05:19 --> 00:05:23 is the fact that we sit in the same building on a Sunday morning.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:27 We think that unity is about being in the same area as one another,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:30 having the same logo, the St. Paul's logo on our bags.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 We think that brings unity.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 Now, that might help a little bit, and I like the new logo,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 but unity doesn't come just from sitting in a pew kind of near someone.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 Unity comes, according to Paul, from being like-minded,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 having the same purpose, having the same goal,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 having the same thing that drives us,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 being able to say like Paul did in chapter 1,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:54 for to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:58 When we share that value, that's what brings us together.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 When everything about us is moving in the same direction,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 it all of a sudden doesn't matter so much
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 if I'm sitting in a pew next to you.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 It doesn't matter so much if I like different music to you.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 It doesn't matter so much if I like to wear different clothes to church
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 than you would like me to wear.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 What matters is we share the same purpose,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 the same goal, and we're working in the same direction.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:25 But it's not always an easy thing,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 being unified at church, is it?
00:06:28 --> 00:06:33 I knew a guy in a church that I was previously involved in,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 and he was one of those people that just irritated me.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 I don't think it was his fault.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 Maybe, I don't know.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 But he's one of those guys who every week at church,
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 he would kind of come up,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 and you'd be in conversation with someone,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:50 and out of nowhere, you'd get this massive slap on the back
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 just to let you know that they were there and to say hello.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 Or you'd be having a conversation with someone,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 and he'd come running down and jump onto your back,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 and I'd be like...
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 And then afterwards, he'd kind of just stand next to you
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 and not say anything,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 and just kind of wait for you to have a conversation.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 And I used to get very frustrated.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 You know, I'd kind of be walking into church,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 and somewhere in the back of my head,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 I'd be praying that,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 please don't notice me so that I can sit by myself over there.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 And, you know, people can be frustrating.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 People can annoy us.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 People can have habits that get on our nerves.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 People can have, you know,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 desires that maybe clash a little bit with ours.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 People can disagree with us.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 And in a group this big,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 I'm fairly confident that there's some people in this room
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 that probably irritate you a little bit.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 You might have found ways of managing it.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 Maybe you can just kind of avoid them.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 The group's big enough,
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 so you can just talk to the people that you like.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 But maybe sometimes you wish...
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 Or church would be easier or better
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 if that person wasn't here.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 I don't want them to not be a Christian.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 Just maybe if they could be a Christian somewhere else
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 where I didn't have to kind of interact with them.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 Now, you might not be as sinful as me,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 but I wonder...
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 If sometimes you just think,
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 wouldn't it be easier
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 if church was just full of the people that I liked?
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 Or people who liked my sort of music
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 or my style of service
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 or my style of building
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 or whatever else?
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 See, in my eyes,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 this guy at my church
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 was kind of getting in the way
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 of the gospel purpose.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:18 When he was around,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:19 I was less loving.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 I was less encouraging.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 I was less compassionate.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 And so I kind of thought,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:24 you know what?
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 If we're going to be about this purpose of,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 you know, the gospel,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 maybe he shouldn't be here.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 We'd be better at it if he wasn't here
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 because he's kind of annoying.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:35 And maybe church would be better
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 if it was just full of people that I liked.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 But that's not the gospel.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 It's not what Christ is about.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 I mean, I had a well-intentioned idea
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 of fulfilling the purpose God had given us,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 but a misguided idea.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:57 And maybe you are wrestling with people
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 here at St. Paul's.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 Maybe you're wrestling with decisions
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 that are made
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 and you wish
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 it could just be done
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 a little bit more
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 the way that you want it done.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 We'd never say that out loud,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 but maybe there's things that annoy you
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 and deep down,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:11 you know,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 the reason they annoy you
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 is because it's not the way
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 you want it done.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 It's not the way
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 you would have us do church.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 It's not the way
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 you would have us preach.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 It's not the logo
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 you would have chosen.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 Well, like me,
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 I think you need to hear
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 Paul's words to you today.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:32 It's not about you.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 It's not about you
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 even a little bit.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 Have a look at verse 3.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:41 Do nothing out of selfish ambition
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 or vain conceit,
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 but in humility
00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 consider others
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 better than yourselves.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 Each of you should look
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 not only to your own interests,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:53 but also to the interests of others.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 See, this is a community
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 made up of forgiven sinners,
00:09:57 --> 00:09:59 made up of not the people
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 you choose,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 but the people God chooses.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:03 You know,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 it doesn't actually matter
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 how long you've been
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 a part of this community.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 It actually doesn't matter
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 how long you've been a Christian.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 You have no claim
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 on this church.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:16 You have no right
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 to demand anything
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 from anyone else
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 in this church
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 because you are here
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 by the same grace
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 that I am here.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 You are only here
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 because of what Jesus did first.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 Even if you were born
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 into Christian parents
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 in this church,
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 you are still here
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 because of what Jesus did
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 and you have no claim
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 on what we should
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 or shouldn't do.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 See, humility
00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 is the foundation
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 of unity.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 Humility
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 is the absolute
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 cornerstone
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 of partnership
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 in the gospel.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 Humility
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 that recognises
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 what God
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 has done for us
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 is what releases us
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 to serve like Jesus
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 in this context.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 A couple of years ago,
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 Sal and I
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 had just started college
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 and we thought
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 we'd love to go
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 to a new church
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 and kind of see
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 what ministry was like
00:11:06 --> 00:11:06 in a different place
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 and a friend of mine
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 rang me up
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and he'd just finished
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 his study at Bible College
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 and he was starting
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 a new church
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 and it was exciting
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 and it was energetic
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 and there was this buzz
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 of we're going to
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 change the world
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 and things are going
00:11:19 --> 00:11:19 to be fantastic
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 and we were looking around
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 for where do we go
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 and do this?
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 Where's the right place?
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 And the hardest part
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 about starting a church
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 is what brings
00:11:27 --> 00:11:27 a building
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 do you have it in?
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 You know,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:29 churches have buildings
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 and new churches
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 don't have buildings
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 so how do we deal
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 with that?
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 And the result was
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 we found a church
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 in Cogger,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 Cogger Presbyterian Church
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 that was once
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 a powerhouse
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 of gospel ministry.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 There was a time
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 when their Sunday school
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 had 400, 500 kids
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 in it every Sunday.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 It was the place
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 to be south of the harbour.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 Everyone was there
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 and they were faithfully
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 proclaiming the gospel.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 But when we arrived there
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 there was 10
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 faithful older people
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 no minister
00:11:59 --> 00:12:02 and a dying church.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 These older people
00:12:06 --> 00:12:09 approached my friend
00:12:09 --> 00:12:09 who was looking
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 to plant a church
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 and said
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 we love Jesus.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 They said
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 we love
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 our traditional service.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 We love our organ.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 We love our church building.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 We love the way
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 that we do things.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 But we love Jesus more.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 And so we want you
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 to come.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 We want you to do
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 church your way
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 as long as it's
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 about the gospel.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 We want you to bring
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 young people in
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 and we want to see
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 people get to know Jesus.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 And over 12 months
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 we basically pulled
00:12:37 --> 00:12:37 the rug out
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 from under them.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 By the time we left
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 we only got to spend
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 one year with them.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:41 By the time we left
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 they had knocked down
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 the old church building.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 We were meeting
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 in a rented hall
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 kind of down the road.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 This was about
00:12:50 --> 00:12:50 as dressed up
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 as anyone got for church
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 other than those
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 ten older people
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 who were faithfully
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 there in suit and tie
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 every week.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 We didn't do hymns
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 very often
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 if ever.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:01 There'd been
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 an intentional shift
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 in the way we were
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 doing church
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 to try and make it
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 accessible to other people.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 And I remember
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 that I thought
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 that that would be
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 a really awkward thing.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 I thought these people
00:13:13 --> 00:13:13 some of them
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 had been in the church
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 for 80 years
00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 and I thought
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 they'll be heartbroken.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 And I remember
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 sitting down
00:13:21 --> 00:13:21 at morning tea
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 with one of the
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 head elders there
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 a guy called
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 John Burgess
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 and I said
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 how are you finding
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 church at the moment?
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 And I was just
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 humbled by his response.
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 He had this huge
