We need Saving

00:00:07 --> 00:00:14 They were about to journey to a distant land when Mary's angel godfather, Gabriel, came down and said,
00:00:14 --> 00:00:18 Good news, you will bear a prince.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:24 Joseph the woodworker and Mary set off to their distant hometown of Bethlehem
00:00:24 --> 00:00:28 because the evil Romans had called a census.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:32 And so everyone had to go to their hometown.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:36 When they arrived, the town was full.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:38 Not even people's guest rooms were free.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 And Mary gave birth to the prince Jesus.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:46 And they lay him in a manger with all the other talking and singing animals.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:51 The shepherds, Bozo, Fopso and Greg, came to visit.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 And the mysterious Magi came and gave gifts.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 And everyone learnt a good lesson about love and sharing.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:01 And that's the end of the story.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:06 At least, that's how Christmas can seem.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 It can seem like it's just a fairy tale.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:11 And we all know that story.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 And we all have a smile.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:14 And it's all a bit lovely.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 Because we do love a good fairy tale.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:22 It seems our movies and TV shows are all full of fairy tales.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 We read fairy tales to our kids.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:27 We read them in our books.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:32 And Christmas can often look like a fairy tale.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:35 You know, that story I told a moment ago,
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 it's mostly the story of Christmas.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 But what do we lose when Christmas is just a fairy tale?
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 What happens when we cut it out of the historical origins?
00:01:49 --> 00:01:53 And what happens when we forget how amazing it is?
00:01:53 --> 00:01:57 And forget the enormity that God became human?
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 So today, as we look at the old, old story of Christmas,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 we're going to put that story back into its historical context.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:11 And we're going to see how this story is part of the bigger picture
00:02:11 --> 00:02:13 of God's story for salvation.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 Please have your Bibles open.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:21 We're a church who loves to read God's Word.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 We're in the part of the Bible called Luke.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 And we're in chapter 2 at the start.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 If you need a Bible, just pop your hand up.

00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 Luke chapter 2 from verse 1.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 At the start of Luke's telling of the birth of Jesus,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 he grounds it in history.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 This was the first census that took place
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 And everyone went to their own town to register.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:00 Caesar Augustus...
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 I keep saying Augustus like...
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 He's from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:07 Augustus Gloop.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 Should it be Augustus?
00:03:10 --> 00:03:10 Yeah, thank you.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 Is anybody particularly good in their Roman history?
00:03:13 --> 00:03:13 Yes?
00:03:14 --> 00:03:14 Some people?
00:03:14 --> 00:03:15 Okay, thank you.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 You can correct me.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:16 Augustus?
00:03:17 --> 00:03:18 Does that feel a little bit better?
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 Yeah, sorry.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 Caesar Augustus.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 He was actually called Octavian.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 He was the son of Julius Caesar's nephew.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:30 And he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 after he defeated Antony and Cleopatra.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:37 And then he was given the title Augustus,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 which means holy or majestic.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 He was the first of the emperors
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 to really encourage people to worship him as God.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 They had this cult of the emperor
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 where they would encourage people to see them as God.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 And there was this fantastical story that went around
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 that he was miraculously conceived by a serpent.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:04 And there's actually an inscription in the British Museum
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 from this time that says about Augustus,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 it says,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 He is God, the Son of God and Saviour,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 bringer of peace and hope and good news.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:22 Now this was all happening around five years,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 five to ten years before Jesus was born.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 And this was spread around about Octavius,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 about Caesar Augustus,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 as good news.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 This was the gospel that went around.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 That he is the Son of God and Saviour,
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 the bringer of peace and hope and good news.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 And you know, if you were the emperor,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 you'd really want people to believe this.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 You know, you'd spread this around.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 Yes, this gives me a mandate from heaven
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 to be in charge because I'm the Son of God.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 I've taken over.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:53 I'm in control.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 Don't fight with me.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 And at the very start of the story of Jesus,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 it is no mistake that Luke reminds us
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 of who is in charge.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 This man who had been going around,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 spreading this fairy tale,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 that he was the Son of God,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 the Saviour, the bringer of peace and hope and good news.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 And so while there's this story being spread around,
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 Luke is going to tell God's story of salvation,
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 which is no made up fairy tale.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 And Luke brings a contrast between Augustus and a baby,
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 one who calls himself the Son of God
00:05:31 --> 00:05:35 and one who will be called the Son of God by God himself.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:39 And we'll see this contrast in a moment with the angel's message.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 Joseph and his fiancée Mary,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 they've headed to Bethlehem because of Augustus' census,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 and they give birth after they arrive.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 But there's no guest room,
00:05:53 --> 00:05:56 so they place their baby Jesus into a manger.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 And an angel brings good news of a Saviour.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 Not Augustuses,
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 not a military Saviour,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 but a true Saviour.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 When we see angels in the Bible,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 it often conjures up images,
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 well it does for me at least,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 conjures up images of big fluffy wings,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 halos.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 Angels are often described as bright,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 very shiny,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 but angel just means messenger.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 And so when they come,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 they're delivering a message.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:29 And here they have a message from God,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 a message to counter the ruler
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 who set himself up with his own fairy tale
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 as the God and Saviour.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 The angel speaks in verse 9.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 An angel of the Lord appeared to them,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 and they were terrified.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 But the angel said,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 do not be afraid.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 I bring you good news
00:06:52 --> 00:06:55 that will cause great joy for all people.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 Today in the town of David,
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 a Saviour has been born to you.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 He is the Messiah, the Lord.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 This will be a sign to you.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 You will find a baby wrapped in cloths
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 and lying in a manger.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:11 A Saviour.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 The one and true Saviour has been born.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 He is the Messiah,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:17 which means,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 Messiah means that he is chosen.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 So it's not some upstart son of God,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:22 Saviour.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 It is God's chosen Saviour.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 Wrapped and placed in a manger.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:31 It is this beautiful contradiction.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 The highest position,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 God, the son of God,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 placed in a manger
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 where animals would be eating their food.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:45 This is God's story of salvation.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 That salvation will come to a people
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 who are desperate to be saved.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 God's story of salvation
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 is written in a way
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 that no fairy tale would be written.
00:07:57 --> 00:08:00 Yes, there is a miraculous birth
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 to an unlikely mother
00:08:01 --> 00:08:04 born in a town of
00:08:04 --> 00:08:07 little to no importance or significance.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 The good news sent by God
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 does not go to those
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 who can write songs about it.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 It doesn't go to the ballads of the time
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 to sing songs and spread it around.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 The good news doesn't go to those
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 who have the fastest horses
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 to spread the good news around.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 The good news doesn't go to royalty.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 God sends his messengers,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:30 the angels,
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 to some shepherds
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 on a hill
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 in the middle of the night.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 Shepherds were disliked,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 dirty,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 despised,
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 people of questionable taste
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 and character.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 And they get visited
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 by an angel
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 and then a whole army
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 of angels.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:53 As unlikely as the birth is,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 the story continues.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 The shepherds hear the angels
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 and they decide to go
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 and visit this baby.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 And so they visit
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 and then after that
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 they are so joyous and excited
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 they continue to praise God
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 and spread the good news.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 The good news about this saviour
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 has come to even
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 the lowliest of low.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:17 Even these despised shepherds
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 have a place before God.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 Even they have a role
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 to play in his kingdom.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 God's story of salvation
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 continues after Jesus' birth
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 in ways that we again
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 would not write it.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:33 the great God-man Jesus.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 He never disobeys his father
00:09:36 --> 00:09:36 and yet
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 he's ridiculed,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 he is murdered,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 he is shamed
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 before all people on a cross.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 His best friends flee
00:09:47 --> 00:09:47 and hide.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 This salvation does not look
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 like a mighty Caesar's
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 salvation or victory.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 It's not a triumphant tale
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 that we would tell
00:09:58 --> 00:10:01 but it's Jesus' triumph.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 It's God's story of salvation
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 shown in weakness.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 His salvation is not a battle
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 won by a man
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 but by a man
00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 humbly led to a tree.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 This man was raised
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 three days later
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 but again,
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 if this was me
00:10:19 --> 00:10:21 I would probably appear
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 to my enemies
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 and gloat
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 I'd be like
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 ha ha
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 you tried to kill me
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 it didn't work
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 and here I am to smite you
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 but Jesus doesn't do that.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 His victory
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 isn't over
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 Pilate the governor
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 it isn't over
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 earthly powers
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 it is over
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 sin
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 and death.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 This is not a story
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 that we would write
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 but this is how
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 the God of the universe
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 would intervene
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 and save his people.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 The good news
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 is proclaimed
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 one quiet night
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 to shepherds
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 about a boy
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 that was born
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 who is our saviour.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 Now at this point
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 we could leave it there
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 we could think
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 oh that's
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 that's a great story
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 sure
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 it's more than a fairy tale
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 it's history
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 it's truth
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 the angels came
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and told truth
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 it's really interesting
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 I'm happy to come
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 and hear about it
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 once a year
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 but
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 why care?
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 maybe it's just
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 a 2000 year old
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 truth
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 and that's
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 all it needs to be
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 it is
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 God's
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 good news
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 to us today
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 because it's not
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 just an old
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 story of God's
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 it is a story
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 that continues
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 and he invites
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 us to be part
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 of his story
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 this is still
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 our story
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 and we need
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 this story
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 of God's salvation
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 yes a lot
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 has changed
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 in 2000 years
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 technology
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 has changed
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 life expectancy
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 has changed
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 the quality
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 of food
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 and housing
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 and education
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 has changed
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 but who we are
00:11:56 --> 00:11:56 at our core
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 is still the same
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 people desperate
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 for a saviour
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 we've become
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 more advanced
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 but we're still
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 fighting wars
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 wars against
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 other countries
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 wars against
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 other ethnicities
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 wars within
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 our own families
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 each of us
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 writing our
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 own story
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 of what we
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 want to save
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 us
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 we want to be
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 in control
00:12:19 --> 00:12:21 of our story
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 and have our
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 own version
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 of our saviour
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 I wonder
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 if you were
00:12:26 --> 00:12:26 going to
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 write a story
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 today
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 you know

00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 you know
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 it has to
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 be particular
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 you have
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 to have
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 everybody
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 in the
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 right
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 spots
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 in the
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 kitchen
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 doing
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 the
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 right
00:13:07 --> 00:13:07 thing
00:13:07 --> 00:13:07 you have
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 to be
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 that
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 person
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 in

00:13:11 --> 00:13:11 are all
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 in a
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 sense
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 wish
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 fulfillment
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 we want
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 to have
00:13:15 --> 00:13:15 value
