00:00:02 --> 00:00:08 Damien has just prayed about the wars that are currently raging in our world.
00:00:08 --> 00:00:14 ! And most of us are probably unaware that we're currently experiencing in our world at the moment
00:00:14 --> 00:00:23 ! the highest number of active armed conflicts that we've seen since World War II that's currently
00:00:23 --> 00:00:28 operating in the world. Now, there's all different kinds of wars. There's eight major wars.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:37 Many are raging in our world. A major war is categorised by annual deaths of more than 10
00:00:37 --> 00:00:45 people. There's 11 minor wars and there's over 130 armed conflicts currently going. There's
00:00:45 --> 00:00:52 approximately 2 billion people, that's about 25 per cent, a quarter of the world's population,
00:00:52 --> 00:01:02 live in areas where they're personally impacted by these wars and these armed conflicts. 2 billion
00:01:02 --> 00:01:11 people. 120 million people are currently displaced because of those conflicts with 100 million people
00:01:11 --> 00:01:19 in need of humanitarian assistance because of the crisis that they're having day by day. That's the
00:01:19 --> 00:01:30 world right now. That's where we live. Most of us go about our daily business here in Sydney not even
00:01:30 --> 00:01:35 thinking about those wars. You know, they come up on Facebook feeds and stuff like that and we look at
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 the news when we get a chance. But we go about our daily business not thinking about them so much
00:01:41 --> 00:01:49 and really only impacted by it when we drive the car into the service station at the moment. That seems to be
00:01:49 --> 00:01:58 the main thing for us. And when we get to the last verses of Ephesians, as we wind up this vision series,
00:01:58 --> 00:02:11 we actually read here of a cosmic war that every soul is involved in and it has devastating
00:02:11 --> 00:02:21 consequences for all of humanity. And on the most part, it's another war that we're unaware of. In fact,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:28 I dare say that the vast majority of us, except for maybe my community group from Friday night,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:36 would be unaware, even coming to church this morning, that there's a cosmic battle raging in my soul
00:02:36 --> 00:02:43 in order to be here and all around us to be here. So that's what we're up to today. Ephesians 6,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:50 get the passage open. And we've got four points that we're journeying through in this text.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 Verse 10. First of all, we need to know the wall. Verse 10 opens with the word finally.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:02 And it's not like, you know, at the end of the sermon where the preacher says find and you go,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:11 fantastic. It's actually a word that means for the remaining time, for the remaining time. And so
00:03:11 --> 00:03:19 what Paul's saying here is he's referring to the time for the Ephesians from now for you Ephesians
00:03:19 --> 00:03:28 until the time where we have seen in Ephesians chapter one, where Christ gathers, God gathers all of his
00:03:28 --> 00:03:35 redeemed people to himself into his presence forever. He says, until that day comes, from now
00:03:35 --> 00:03:44 until that day comes, here's the expectation of what's going on for you, the church.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:50 This is what he says. Verse 10. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power, put on the full
00:03:50 --> 00:03:57 armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against
00:03:57 --> 00:04:03 flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the dark world and against
00:04:03 --> 00:04:13 the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. So these verses are the dramatic and glorious
00:04:13 --> 00:04:22 climax to the book of Ephesians. And Ephesians has unfolded for us. Let me just give you a
00:04:22 --> 00:04:31 quick summary. It's unfolded for us. God's glorious plan for all time and space to gather people from
00:04:31 --> 00:04:39 every tribe, language and nation under the Lordship of Jesus into a newer society that are his forever
00:04:39 --> 00:04:46 in his presence for our joy and his glory. And what God does is the way he achieves that plan
00:04:46 --> 00:04:53 is in time and space is through God the Son entering human history in the person of Jesus Christ,
00:04:53 --> 00:05:02 the dying of cross for humanity's rebellion against God and Jesus rising triumphantly over death. That
00:05:02 --> 00:05:11 is, Jesus killed off death. He met God's justice for our sin and he defeated the forces of evil.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:19 And Paul explained in chapter 1 verse 21 that Jesus triumphed over the devil at the cross.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:28 And after his resurrection from the dead, Jesus was enthroned in heaven to rule over all powers
00:05:28 --> 00:05:38 on earth, in heaven and under the earth. And God continues that plan to rescue people
00:05:38 --> 00:05:47 from Satan's destructive influence as he grants them saving faith in the gospel, the good news of
00:05:47 --> 00:05:56 Jesus Christ and brings them, gathers them into his new society. And he's been working at that for 2
00:05:56 --> 00:06:07 years and continues to work at it now. And what God now does is he displays his glory. He displays his
00:06:07 --> 00:06:18 wisdom and his goodness and his goodness and the magnificence of his plan to rescue humanity in Jesus by lifting up his church.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:33 His church is his trophy for all the spiritual realms to see. He holds it up as his glorious trophy.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:48 And as he does that in the spiritual realm and Satan walks past, it's a reminder. When he sees God's trophy lifted,
00:06:49 --> 00:07:01 that is the reminder that he's defeated. The church is his reminder that he and his whole army are defeated.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:13 And he hates it. He hates it. He hates the fact that Christ is the victor and he is the defeated one.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:26 And so he continues to battle to destroy the trophy.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:38 When Paul says our battle isn't against flesh and blood here, what he's saying is that behind
00:07:38 --> 00:07:51 and beyond all the evil of flesh and blood, all the evil of war and all the evil of greed and envy and gossip
00:07:51 --> 00:08:02 is a war that is going on in the spiritual realm that is the ultimate source of all evil that we experience in our world.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:32 That's what he's saying there.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:37 We can never understand the depths of the problem of evil in human history.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:49 Right now, there is a cosmic war going on to destroy what God is doing in creating a new people for himself in Jesus.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 For instance, and you see it at several points here.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 You see it in the New Testament.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:02 But in Ephesians 4, verse 26 and 27, I preached at least a couple of weeks ago,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 it says specifically,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 do not be angry with each other.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 Why?
00:09:11 --> 00:09:15 So that the devil doesn't get a foothold.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 And he's talking about relationships within the church.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:32 In other words, anger is, if you like, a crack that allows Satan to work his way in there
00:09:32 --> 00:09:41 and expand the crack and make it worse in order to destroy what God is building.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:46 And in fact, every instruction that I talked about,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 you know, that we see here in chapters 4 and 5,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:55 instructions to take off the old self and to put on the new self,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:59 to get rid of the old behaviours of the old, you know,
00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 which follows Satan and his ways,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 and put on the new behaviours in Christ,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:07 in every single area of life of church,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 of marriage, of relationships, of parenting,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 of work in the wider world,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:15 is all done in the context of spiritual warfare.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:20 That is, it's not about willpower.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 Change is not about willpower.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 It is about warfare.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 The word struggle,
00:10:30 --> 00:10:33 at the beginning of verse 12,
00:10:33 --> 00:10:38 indicates hand-on-hand battle,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:46 which means it's not a struggle that's out there being done by a few.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 It's a very personal struggle, hand-on-hand.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:53 It's literally the image that we have here
00:10:53 --> 00:10:58 is the locked-in mortal combat with your enemy
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 where you are swaying,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 you're on the ground,
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 you're rolling in the mud,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 you are,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 it's a battle for the death,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 and it's sweat on sweat,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 it's breath on breath,
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 it is blood on blood.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:16 It's not bombs dropped from 40 feet.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 That is, this is the moment-by-moment battle
00:11:25 --> 00:11:28 that every Christian is involved in
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 until Jesus winds up history
00:11:30 --> 00:11:34 and finally crushes Satan under his foot.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 You see, we're going to know
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 that's what's happening for us right now.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 We're going to know the war.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 Secondly, what we also need to know
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 is the enemy.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 We need to know the enemy and his tactics.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 Now, verse 11 mentions the devil.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 Verse 12 calls the enemy,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 the rulers, the authorities,
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 the powers of this dark world
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 and the spiritual force of evil.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:05 So, the Bible is pretty clear
00:12:05 --> 00:12:07 that the devil and his fallen angels
00:12:07 --> 00:12:11 are personal, supernatural beings,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:15 not equal with God in any measure,
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 created beings,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:23 but what is at the centre of Satan's evil
00:12:23 --> 00:12:28 is a desire to be God more than anything else.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:34 And so, what we see in the scriptures
00:12:34 --> 00:12:38 is that Satan, he has no conscience,
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 he has no compassion,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 he has no remorse,
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 he has no morals,
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 he feeds on pain and anguish and filth.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 In fact, there's nothing in Satan
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 which is redeemable at all.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 There is no virtue at all.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 He is just a dark void.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:59 And he hates God.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 He hates God's church
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 and he hates God's people.
00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 And his one passion,
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 one aim,
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 knowing that he himself is defeated,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:15 is to defeat the trophy
00:13:15 --> 00:13:19 that God holds up,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 that displays his magnificence
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 and his glory to the world.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 And so, what God,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 sorry, what God doesn't,
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 but Paul also doesn't want us
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 to make the mistake here
00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 of underestimating the devil's power.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 It's why he doesn't just say
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 the devil and his angels
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 or his demons.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 He actually says,
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 the rulers,
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 the authorities,
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 the powers of this dark world,
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 the spiritual forces of evil,
00:13:51 --> 00:13:53 our enemy is formidable.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 And yet, on the other hand,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:55 he doesn't want us
00:13:55 --> 00:13:58 to overestimate them either
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 because in verse 10,
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 finally,
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 in these days of cosmic war,
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 he says,
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 be strong in the Lord
00:14:04 --> 00:14:07 and in his mighty power.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:07 In other words,
00:14:08 --> 00:14:08 in the battle,
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 don't be cowardly,
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 don't be weak,
00:14:12 --> 00:14:14 don't be afraid,
00:14:14 --> 00:14:16 expect victory.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 So that's who he is.
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 We also need to know
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 some of his battle tactics.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 Verse 11 mentions
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 the devil's schemes.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 Literally,
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 the devil's methods
00:14:37 --> 00:14:40 in warfare.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 His battle devices,
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 his tactics,
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 if you like.
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 And he's got many of them,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 but really,
00:14:50 --> 00:14:53 they're characterised,
00:14:53 --> 00:14:53 if you like,
00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 into two main strategies.
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 In his preface
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 to his book,
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 The Screwtape Letters,
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 C.S. Lewis wrote
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 that there are two equal
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 and opposite errors
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 that the devil wants
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 all people to fall into.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:10 And they're linked
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 to what I've just mentioned.
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 One strategy
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 is to disbelieve
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 the existence
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 of the devil
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 and his crew,
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 and the other
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 is to have
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 an excessive
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 and unhealthy
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 interest in them.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 One is to overestimate,
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 one is to underestimate.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 Lewis wrote,
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 they themselves,
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 referring to
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 Satan
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 and his buddies,
00:15:34 --> 00:15:36 they themselves
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 are equally
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 pleased
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 by both errors
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 and hail
00:15:40 --> 00:15:42 a materialist
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 or a magician
00:15:43 --> 00:15:45 with the same delight.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:47 You see,
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 the underestimator,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 the materialist,
00:15:52 --> 00:15:54 sees everything
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 in this world,
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 every evil
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 in this world,
00:15:58 --> 00:15:58 as having
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 a natural
00:15:59 --> 00:16:02 or a material
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 explanation.
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 It's
00:16:05 --> 00:16:08 because
00:16:08 --> 00:16:10 you're not educated
00:16:10 --> 00:16:10 enough.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 It's because
00:16:11 --> 00:16:11 you're dropped
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 on your head
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 as a baby.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 It's because
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 of your environment,
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 your disposition.
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 Everything
00:16:18 --> 00:16:20 has a material
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 reason
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 and therefore
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 can be solved.
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 The
00:16:24 --> 00:16:27 under-spiritual
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 approach
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 never
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 or very
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 rarely
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 takes the
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 cosmic war
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 into account.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 Every problem
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 can therefore
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 be fixed
00:16:37 --> 00:16:37 via
00:16:37 --> 00:16:39 education,
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 medicine,
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 social awareness,
00:16:42 --> 00:16:42 counselling,
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 good leadership,
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 that sort of stuff.
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 The
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 over-estimator
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 sees
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 absolutely
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 everything
00:16:51 --> 00:16:51 as spiritual
00:16:51 --> 00:16:53 and blames
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 everything
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 on the devil
00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 and doesn't
00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 see the
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 complexity
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 of a
00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 fallen world
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 and God's
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 gracious
00:17:00 --> 00:17:00 provision
00:17:00 --> 00:17:02 of
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 education,
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 medicine,
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 leadership
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 and so on
00:17:06 --> 00:17:06 and so forth.
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 So you've got
00:17:07 --> 00:17:07 the
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 under-estimator
00:17:08 --> 00:17:08 and the
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 over-estimator
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 and Satan's
00:17:10 --> 00:17:10 happy with
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 both.
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 There are way
00:17:15 --> 00:17:15 too many
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 Christians
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 who don't
00:17:17 --> 00:17:17 consider
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 the spiritual
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 warfare
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 and way
00:17:20 --> 00:17:20 too many
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 Christians
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 who attribute
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 everything to
00:17:23 --> 00:17:23 Satan
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 and take
00:17:24 --> 00:17:24 no
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 personal
00:17:25 --> 00:17:25 account
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 at all.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 I've
00:17:33 --> 00:17:33 actually
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 know
00:17:34 --> 00:17:34 of
00:17:34 --> 00:17:34 someone
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 who
00:17:35 --> 00:17:35 when
00:17:35 --> 00:17:35 they
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 burnt
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 their
00:17:37 --> 00:17:37 dinner
00:17:37 --> 00:17:37 on
00:17:37 --> 00:17:37 the
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 stove
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 cast
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 Satan
00:17:40 --> 00:17:40 out
00:17:40 --> 00:17:40 of
00:17:40 --> 00:17:40 the
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 stove.
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 An
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 over-estimator.
00:17:46 --> 00:17:46 No
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 responsibility
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 for taking
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 their eye
00:17:49 --> 00:17:49 off the
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 pot.
00:17:51 --> 00:17:51 It's all
00:17:51 --> 00:17:52 Satan's
00:17:52 --> 00:17:52 fault.
00:17:53 --> 00:17:55 And so
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 before we
00:17:56 --> 00:17:57 blame the
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 devil for
00:17:58 --> 00:17:58 our gossip
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 and our
00:17:59 --> 00:17:59 slander
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 and our
00:18:00 --> 00:18:00 greed,
00:18:01 --> 00:18:01 we need
00:18:01 --> 00:18:02 to see
00:18:02 --> 00:18:02 them as
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 personal
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 moral
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 failings
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 where we
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 are losing
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 the skirmishes
00:18:08 --> 00:18:08 in the
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 wall
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 because we're
00:18:10 --> 00:18:10 not taking
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 God's
00:18:11 --> 00:18:11 word
00:18:11 --> 00:18:11 seriously.
00:18:15 --> 00:18:15 Both
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 the
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 under-estimator
00:18:17 --> 00:18:17 and the
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 over-estimator
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 minimise
00:18:19 --> 00:18:20 and reduce
00:18:20 --> 00:18:20 evil.
00:18:21 --> 00:18:21 That's what
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 they do.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 That's their
00:18:23 --> 00:18:23 problem.
00:18:23 --> 00:18:25 Either
00:18:25 --> 00:18:25 way,
00:18:27 --> 00:18:27 Satan's
00:18:27 --> 00:18:27 happy.
00:18:30 --> 00:18:30 Now,
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 Satan's
00:18:31 --> 00:18:31 schemes,
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 there's
00:18:33 --> 00:18:33 his kind
00:18:33 --> 00:18:33 of main
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 strategies,
00:18:34 --> 00:18:34 if you
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 like,
00:18:35 --> 00:18:35 but he's
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 got a
00:18:36 --> 00:18:36 couple of
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 tactics
00:18:37 --> 00:18:39 which are
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 also
00:18:40 --> 00:18:43 two areas
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 which
00:18:45 --> 00:18:47 are equal
00:18:47 --> 00:18:48 and
00:18:48 --> 00:18:48 opposite
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 lies
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 and
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 they
00:18:51 --> 00:18:51 are
