00:00:11 --> 00:00:17 Fan Zhong Yuen spent nearly 40 years as a noble scholar official.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:24 He was appointed to be the prime minister over the entire emperor, but later demoted.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:33 He firmly believed that governing officials were the first to worry the worries of all under heaven,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 and the last to enjoy its joy.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:44 And this and his reform ensured the Song Dynasty builds on the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty
00:00:44 --> 00:00:52 and left a long-lasting impact on the philosophy of governing and management of a fast country like China.
00:00:52 --> 00:01:03 A friend tried to persuade him to ease off on his reform and be careful about all the political enemy he has stirred up for himself.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:07 And he replied with a poem with this line,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:13 Better to ramassade and die than keep silent and live.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:23 Bringing reform that would benefit all under heaven was so important to him that he was not free to keep silent.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:32 Even though his speak up means demotion or death, but far better than keeping quiet and stay alive.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:39 Today, people get into politics and governing jobs for what they can get out of it.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:49 But Fan Zhong Yuen's idea for a government official is unheard of in modern society, in the East or in the West.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:59 His realization of the limitation of his freedom is even a rare commodity of our current Western culture.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:06 Fan treats liberty for the betterment of his countrymen.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:13 On the other side, many Western people mix independence and freedom together.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:22 Westerners consider themselves free and will protest like William Wallace at the War of Scottish Independence.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:27 They may take my life, but they will never take our freedom.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:33 Or Arthur Scott, one of the United States founding fathers, Patrick Henry,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 give me liberty or give me death.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:42 As both calls for their countrymen to break free of their motherland, England.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:48 The same pride has echoed around many countries last few years.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:55 As the world deal with COVID-19 and government restrictions,
00:02:55 --> 00:03:04 people protest that no government or anyone should have the right to tell them what to think or how to behave.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:14 Our modern view of freedom is one of autonomy and make freedom the highest value of human existence.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:20 People define freedom as the absence of any limitations or constraints.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:27 The fewer boundaries they have on their choices and actions, the freer they will feel.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:34 As we carry on our vision series in looking at Jesus is all about life,
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 we will look at Jesus is all about freedom today.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:44 I want to highlight four observations about modern view of freedom
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 and suggest two ways to embrace freedom.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:54 Freedom is defined as doing whatever I want without constraint.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 Freedom is defined as a way to make freedom.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 Freedom is defined as a way to make freedom.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:02 This definition will only work if there is only just one thing called freedom
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 that either you can have or do not have.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:11 However, there are numerous freedoms at different stages of life journey
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 and no one can have them all.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 We all want to be free from illness or sickness
00:04:18 --> 00:04:24 and live long enough to enjoy a sustained loving relationship with family and friends.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:31 However, if you like to eat wherever you want to
00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 and it causes a problem with your health,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:39 you will have to make an obvious choice to limit and change your eating habit.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:47 Likewise, you pursue a career or profession to ensure an income
00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 that allows you the freedom to choose your living standard and your lessons.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:58 You will have to sacrifice innumerable other freedoms of time and money.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 If you speak with anyone who has just started uni this year
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 or is finishing the course,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:08 you will know firsthand what it is like to make those sacrifices.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:14 Freedom is not what our culture tells us.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:23 Genuine freedom comes only from strategically losing some freedoms to gain others.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 You should ask which freedom is more important,
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 the more truly liberating.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 At the same time, ask yourself,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 who has sacrificially invested in your life
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 to ensure that you are not being unjust?
00:05:42 --> 00:05:46 We are all products of a family and a community
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 that invests much time and love in us.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:53 Much of it happened even before we can speak
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 or can now remember.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 As a child,
00:05:58 --> 00:06:00 when we become injured or sick,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 or as we age,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:06 our need and dependence on others increases,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:11 making believing in an absolute individual autonomy
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 a cruel and unjust choice.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:19 No one is ever only responsible for themselves.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:24 We all share responsibility for and to others.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:30 What John Donne wrote in his poem in 1624,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 no man is an island and tire of itself.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 Any man's death diminishes me
00:06:36 --> 00:06:39 because I am involved in mankind,
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 still ring true today.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 Modern freedom lives on the principle
00:06:47 --> 00:06:50 that everyone should be free to live as they desire,
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 as long as they do not harm anyone else.
00:06:53 --> 00:07:00 We no longer need to impose a set of moral rights or wrongs
00:07:00 --> 00:07:04 on anyone if people abide to this harm principle.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:10 The freedom of choice will become a self-correcting absolute
00:07:10 --> 00:07:15 that guides living together without needing any value judgment.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 Under this principle,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:27 freedom is the only unconditional good and moral absolute of our society
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 that should hold a need.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:39 Michael Kahneman of Harvard Law Society denies it as an empty concept
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 because it cannot stand alone.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:49 It leads us first to define what good and thriving human life is
00:07:49 --> 00:07:53 and agree on what harm is for it to work.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 Whether freedom is good or bad
00:07:56 --> 00:08:00 depends entirely on the particular substantive cause
00:08:00 --> 00:08:03 on behalf of which freedom is involved.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 Our challenge today
00:08:06 --> 00:08:11 is not to follow the culturally dominant view of freedom from
00:08:11 --> 00:08:16 without any definition of what our freedom is for.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:20 We must also ensure we do not join the crowd
00:08:20 --> 00:08:26 to perpetuate a publicly shaming people or groups
00:08:26 --> 00:08:29 to press our moral beliefs about harm on them.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:35 Freedom of choice cannot stand alone as a guide to a behavior
00:08:35 --> 00:08:39 even with its full intention of not harming other people.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:43 theologian Tim Keller
00:08:43 --> 00:08:46 Tim Keller observed that
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 the harm principle is useless
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 as a guide and untrustworthy.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 And he also warns
00:08:53 --> 00:08:58 freedom as is widely collected in our society
00:08:58 --> 00:09:03 is corrosive to humanity in general
00:09:03 --> 00:09:07 and to enduring committed love relationship in particular.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:11 He came to this conclusion
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 drawing on Jonathan Head's
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 work titled
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 Happiness
00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 Hypothesis
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 Hey, right
00:09:20 --> 00:09:24 An ideology of extreme personal freedom
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 can be dangerous
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 because it encourages people
00:09:28 --> 00:09:32 to leave homes, jobs, cities, and marriage
00:09:32 --> 00:09:36 in search of personal and professional fulfillment
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 thereby breaking the relationship
00:09:38 --> 00:09:42 that were properly the best hope for such fulfillment.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 His happiness research
00:09:47 --> 00:09:51 confirmed the importance of strong social relationship
00:09:51 --> 00:09:55 in strengthening the immune system
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 extending life
00:09:56 --> 00:09:59 speeding up recovery from surgery
00:09:59 --> 00:10:02 and reduce the risk of depression
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 and anxiety disorders.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 Deep down
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 we all sense the need
00:10:09 --> 00:10:12 to interact and intertwine with others.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:17 We need the gift and take
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 we need to belong.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 What would happen
00:10:21 --> 00:10:24 if everyone ran off to pursue their freedom?
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 Family would fall apart
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 neighborhood association would collapse
00:10:30 --> 00:10:34 and the erosion of voluntary
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 and selfish community
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 will necessitate
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 the soft tyranny
00:10:39 --> 00:10:42 of a growing bureaucratic state
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 where individuals are powerless.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 Being honest
00:10:48 --> 00:10:48 generous
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 and public spirit
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 being faithful
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 to your spouse and children
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 will regularly infringe
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 on your happiness
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 and freedom.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 However
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 a more robust
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 and cohesive government
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 is the only alternative
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 if anyone
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 protects their independence
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 and stops doing these things.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 The harm
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 of emphasizing
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 personal freedom
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 above community
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 commitment
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 could eventually
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 be the loss
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 of liberty
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 and independence.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 Too much
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 individual freedom
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 leads to increased
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 government control
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 over the whole group
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 because no one
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 is willing to sacrifice
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 for the better good
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 of the collectives.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 Any
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 authorities
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 organizations
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 or institutions
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 that impose
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 rules and regulations
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 are often perceived
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 as an enemy
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 of freedom.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:51 Christian
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 is often seen
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 as an arch enemy.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 many people
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 reckon
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 Christianity
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 requires people
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 to recognize
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 their insufficiency
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 and turn their back
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 on their autonomies.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 Autonomics
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 seemingly
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 happy life.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 It stipulates
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 people
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 to be born
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 as human beings
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 who understand
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 their dependency
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 on something
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 more significant.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 They consider that
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 as a great
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 infringement
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 on their freedom.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 if that's

00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 and worship.
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 Keller says it well
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 there is no
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 greater feeling
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 of liberation
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 than to free
00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 and be loved
00:13:07 --> 00:13:07 well.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 The affirmation
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 that comes
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 from love
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 liberates
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 your fear
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 and self-doubt.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:17 it frees you
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 from having
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 to face
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 the world
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 alone.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 Your friend

00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 will be crucial

00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 wonderful it gets

00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 you also have
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 to give up
00:13:43 --> 00:13:43 your independence.

00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 hopelessly
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 devoted to someone.
00:14:35 --> 00:14:38 you will move
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 into that direction
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 especially
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 if you want
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 to be true
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 to the contemporary
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 sense of freedom
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 and be your own
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 master.

00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 you want
00:14:49 --> 00:14:49 to master
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 your freedom
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 the more
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 you will realize
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 you are not free
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 or able
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 to be the master.
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 Over the last
00:14:58 --> 00:14:58 few weeks
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 we have pointed out
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 that everyone
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 has an inner
00:15:01 --> 00:15:01 urge
00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 to find love
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 meaning
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 and satisfaction.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 Humans
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 are frustrated
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 and trapped
00:15:08 --> 00:15:10 because we are
00:15:10 --> 00:15:10 looking at the
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 wrong thing
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 and wrong place.
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 We look to
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 created things
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 rather than
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 to God
00:15:17 --> 00:15:17 to address
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 that urge.
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 We are
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 our worst enemy
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 regarding
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 autonomous
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 freedom
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 because we do
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 not just have
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 an inner urge
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 to find love
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 meaning
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 and satisfaction.
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 We also
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 worship
00:15:32 --> 00:15:34 what we identify
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 as the source
00:15:35 --> 00:15:35 of them
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 and we end up
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 being controlled
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 by it.

00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 is none
00:16:10 --> 00:16:10 of us
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 are free agents.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 We are all
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 worshipping
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 and serving
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 something.
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 There is no
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 such thing
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 as freedom
00:16:17 --> 00:16:19 without limitation.
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 To embrace
00:16:21 --> 00:16:21 freedom
00:16:21 --> 00:16:23 not in the sense
00:16:23 --> 00:16:23 of our
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 contemporary culture
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 tell us
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 we should look
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 for the right
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 the liberating
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 constraint
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 that fits
