00:00:13 --> 00:00:18 I, Natalie, who was pregnant at the time, that little thing,
00:00:19 --> 00:00:22 and two other people, that little thing's now called Isabel,
00:00:22 --> 00:00:30 so we're about to go on a hike, and discovering it wasn't going to be an easy stroll.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:31 We looked at where we'd come ahead, and we're like,
00:00:32 --> 00:00:33 it's going to be a little bit hard, I think.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:39 The trail was narrow, the trail was steep, the ground under our feet was standing loose.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 Now, I've done a little bit of hiking in my time.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 I used to work for the National Parks and Wildlife Service in New South Wales.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:51 Many years ago, one of my jobs was to build, to maintain walking tracks,
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 which meant that I had to walk among those walking tracks.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 One of the principles I had in building a walking track was,
00:00:58 --> 00:01:02 if I'm going to make this thing, and I'm going to have to maintain this thing,
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 they're going to make it easy to maintain it.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:09 So, which means it's going to be wide, I'm going to be able to ride cod bikes up and down this track,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 it's going to be as level as we possibly can,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 go the long way around to make it an easy terrain, rather than up the side of the hill.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 That kind of principle was a thing I even managed to convince,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:24 my immediate supervisor to buy a little bulldozer for me,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:28 so I could just drive through the bush, rather than having to use axes and stuff like that.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:30 And, yeah, there you go, there's your trail.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:36 So, this day in Canada, when I looked at this, it wasn't so much the effort,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 even though I realised there was a little bit more effort involved in hiking this one,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 what worried me was the reading material that I had on the way to the hike.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 As we drove to the head of the trail, I was reading up on some park information,
00:01:51 --> 00:01:56 you know, like a collection of National Park newspaper kind of thing that I picked up in the information centre.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:02 And in the middle of this was a whole lift-out section on how to survive
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 the many animals that are going to try and kill you as you go for a walk in the National Park.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:11 And, you know, in Australia, worst-case scenario is a snake.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 You know, and they're trying to get away with an awesome, you know,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 rampant, you know, koala who's got some of their endeavor against people.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 Now, apart from that,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 there's not so many other worries in this country to go for a hike.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 But in this section, it's got advice on cougars.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 Be careful, cougars, mountain lions.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 What they do is they pick out their target,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:33 they stalk you for some time,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 and then they jump on you from behind and from above.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:38 They, you know, wait for you to get through some sort of ravine,
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 then leap on you from behind.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 It's like, before you know it,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 your face is getting caught off by some cougar.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 And it's like, fantastic.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 Okay, so leave the cougars aside.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:51 There's the black bears.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 And it says, the advice here is,
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 if it's a black bear you're confronted with,
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 you've got to make yourself look really big and yell at me.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:00 Yell, yell, yell.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 And that will generally freak them out
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 and they'll run away, hopefully.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:09 But don't mistake the black bear for the grizzly bear.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 You do good to the grizzly bear,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 and the grizzly bear will assure it's a challenge on its territory
00:03:15 --> 00:03:17 and it will immediately attack you.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:22 And so here's the advice being attacked by a grizzly bear.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:26 Now, it's really awful advice.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 You're meant to remain calm.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:30 Okay, that's the first tip.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:31 Right, tip.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:35 You're meant to lay down as if you are dead
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 in a fetal position
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 and you're meant to time the attack.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:46 Hang on a bit there.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:47 Click.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:48 Go.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:49 Right, okay.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:51 If it gets to two minutes,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 if the bear's been chewing on your leg for two minutes,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 apparently that means it's a serious attack.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 Okay, it's serious at that moment
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 and it means that if it's still going for two minutes,
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 then it's likely to keep going.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 And so right now is the time to,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 now that it's got your leg,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 now it's the plan to fight back.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 Right, I reckon it's a bit late, that advice.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 But that's how you handle grizzly bears.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 Apparently they just get sick of you
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 and eventually walk away.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 On most cases,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 except a lot of people are being killed by grizzly bears.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:23 But anyway,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:27 now it says there
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 you have to be particularly careful
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 when there's a grizzly bear with cubs.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 They're especially aggressive
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 when they have their cubs with them,
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 something to do with sleep deprivation
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 or something like that.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 And so,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 on this particular day,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:45 ask him,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:46 she knows what it's like.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:47 Ask him.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 On this particular day,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 you turn up to this track
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 and you find this sign
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 on the front of the trails
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 where the female grizzly
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 with two cubs
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 on this track
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 the day before.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 And you're going,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 do we walk?
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 Do we not walk?
00:05:07 --> 00:05:07 You know,
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 what do we do here?
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 Apparently,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 getting a bit of information like that
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 means that you must be prepared.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 You must prepare
00:05:15 --> 00:05:15 for what's about to come.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 And the recommendation
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 to be prepared
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 in this scenario
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 is to have a can
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 of bear spray with you.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:24 Now,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 I've got a can
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 of fly spray in my office.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 It's about this big.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 I've got a can
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 of wasp spray in my office.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 It's about this big.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:30 So you can imagine
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 the size
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 the bear spray is.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:33 And it's
00:05:33 --> 00:05:35 some sort of pepper spray
00:05:35 --> 00:05:35 kind of thing.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 It apparently distracts
00:05:36 --> 00:05:36 it enough
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 and blinds
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 if you're going to run away
00:05:38 --> 00:05:38 or something like that.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 But we didn't have
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 any bear spray.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 All we had
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 was some hair spray
00:05:43 --> 00:05:43 and
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 seriously,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 that's all we can come up with.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:48 And so
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 we had this hair spray
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 and so my friend's going,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 let's make it a flame fry.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 So I had a box of matches.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:54 He's sprayed
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 and we're trying to make this,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:56 you know,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 six matches
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 we'd went out
00:05:58 --> 00:05:58 and spizzle
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 with it.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 You know,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 we couldn't make this
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 thing work
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 into a flame fry.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 So instead
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 I got a big stick
00:06:05 --> 00:06:05 and then we went.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:06 We're not at high.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 But as we walked
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 on that walk
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 constantly looking around
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 for cougars,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 wolverines,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 black bears,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:14 you know,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 grizzly bears
00:06:15 --> 00:06:16 and anything else
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 that would make the grass
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 and the trees rustle.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:19 You see,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 it's crucial
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 to know
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 what to expect
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 on a hike like that
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 in order to be prepared.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 Which is what we're about to do
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 for the next six weeks.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 We're going to have
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 a walk with Jesus
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 in Luke's Gospel.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:32 That's the same way.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:33 We're going to have
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 a walk with Jesus
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 in Luke's Gospel
00:06:35 --> 00:06:35 because that's what
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 Jesus is doing.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 In Luke,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 he is in
00:06:39 --> 00:06:39 chapter 9,
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 he is starting
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 a walk to Jerusalem.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 And this walk,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 Jesus makes it clear
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 to his disciples
00:06:48 --> 00:06:48 and to us,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 this is not
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 an easy journey.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:51 This walk
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 you're about to go on
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 is a dangerous walk,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 it's a hard walk
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 and yet it's a walk
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 that he calls us
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 on to with him.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:01 He calls us
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 to come with him
00:07:02 --> 00:07:02 on this one.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 And this is a crucial
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 one for us
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 as a church,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 as I said,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 I look forward
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 to Vision Series
00:07:11 --> 00:07:11 every year.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 In watching
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 Vision 2020,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 which is the
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 ministry agenda
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 which shapes us
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 as a church,
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 I did it back
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 in 2009,

00:07:24 --> 00:07:24 and I've repeated

00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 into a new era
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 of significant
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 personal sacrifice
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 for the glory
00:07:35 --> 00:07:35 of God
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 in the mission
00:07:36 --> 00:07:36 field
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 in the chief spaces
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 in our time.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 And our Vision Series
00:07:42 --> 00:07:42 is a time
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 every year
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 when I call us
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 as a church
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 and I do it myself,

00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 in order to live
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 a little more.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 It's trying to give up
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 some more.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:18 This is what we do
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 every Christmas here
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 to call us
00:08:20 --> 00:08:20 as a church
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 to give up some more,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 to surrender some more,
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 to commit to Jesus
00:08:24 --> 00:08:24 some more,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 to obey Jesus
00:08:26 --> 00:08:26 some more
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 and to find
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 more freedom
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 and more joy
00:08:29 --> 00:08:29 in Him
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 as you do that.

00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 deliberate,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 using the word
00:09:22 --> 00:09:22 disciple
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 as opposed
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 to Christian
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 here.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:26 The word
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 Christian
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 has context
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 in terms
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 of our culture
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 and I'm a Christian

00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 to a Muslim

00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 disciple does.

00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 that we are
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 students
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 of the Lord
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 Jesus.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 More specifically
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 what it means
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 is we are
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 under the
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 discipline
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 of the Lord
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 Jesus.

00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 discipleship means.
