00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 Friends, we are kicking off a new series in a book of the Bible called Jonah.
00:00:04 --> 00:00:08 ! And if you've never read Jonah before, you've definitely heard about it.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:13 People have heard about the story of Jonah, normally when they were a kid.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:19 And I had an interesting experience as a kid with the book of Jonah.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:28 I was talking to a friend of mine this week who was interested in why we were doing the book of Jonah as a church.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:29 Why are we exploring it?
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 And I mentioned to him that as a kid, I grew up in a place called Eden.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 That's Eden there.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 Well, I grew up nearby at least, 10 minutes away in the country.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 And you'll see on your right there that that's the harbour in Eden.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 There's a huge, big harbour where ships can sail in.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:54 And that's where, if people get hit by a storm during the Sydney to Hobart, where everyone retreats before going across Bass Strait.
00:00:54 --> 00:01:00 It's a beautiful part of the world that if there's ever a sunny day, it's a lovely place.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 Now, historically, Eden was a whaling town.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:06 They would hunt whales there.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:16 There's this story that I was told every year when I went on a school excursion to the museum, the Eden Whaling Museum.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:22 There was a man who fell into the sea during a hunt.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:23 They would go on these boats.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 They were incredibly dangerous.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:26 They would all be standing up throwing harpoons.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:28 No one could swim.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:30 People drowned all the time.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 And a man fell in and was assumed drowned.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 But two days later, they found something in the belly of a whale that they'd caught.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:43 It was a person.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:45 It was this man.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:47 He'd been bleached completely white.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 He'd either lost or had all his hair bleached as well.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 And he completely lost his mind.
00:01:55 --> 00:02:04 Now, this friend I was talking to about my experience of thinking about this story from where I grew up,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:07 and Jonah said, look, you've got this wrong.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:10 That man was swallowed by a whale.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 Jonah was swallowed by a fish, and a whale is not a fish.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 And I thought, is that really what Jonah's about?
00:02:18 --> 00:02:27 Is it just for a historical verification of the kind of sea creature that could inhale a human hole?
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 No.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:29 That's not what it's about at all.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:35 This book isn't a fairy tale or fable.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 It's actually history, and it's not even about Jonah.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 It's about God.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:49 This book reveals the depth and waywardness of humanity's sin.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:57 This book is about God's heart toward all those who run away from him.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 See, God longs to save people who are nearest to him and furthest away
00:03:04 --> 00:03:10 by gifting them his unearned grace and love.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:15 So as I set up Jonah for us for this next season as a church,
00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 I'm going to ask God for his help as he speaks through his word.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 Let's pray.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:26 Lord God, would you please make your words loud and clear from the pages of our Bible?
00:03:27 --> 00:03:30 Deliver to us a great message from your prophet,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 so we might turn to you and receive your grace.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:36 Amen.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:41 Now, you might have had some trouble finding Jonah in your Bible,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 because it's hard to find.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:47 It's somewhere just past the middle in the Minor Prophets.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:48 It's in the Old Testament.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:54 And this bit of history is recorded from a unique time in Israel's history.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 It's around about 780 BC.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 Israel was a divided nation.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 The glorious reign of King Solomon,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:13 the wonderful riches and majesty of his reign,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 had come to an end,
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 and he had sons,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 at least two of whom wanted to be king.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 And the kingdom couldn't agree on who was going to be their king,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 so they split in two.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 There was a northern kingdom who retained the name Israel,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 and a southern kingdom who had the name Judah.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:40 The kingdoms from then on jostled in this uneasy brotherhood.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 They were sandwiched between nations who hated them,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 and they hated,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:46 all around them.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:51 And Jonah was a northern kingdom Israelite.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 And he was a prophet.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:02 Prophets were how God had chosen to communicate to his people
00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 since the time of Moses.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:08 He had chosen people, raised them up.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 They didn't go to uni and become a prophet.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 But he called them, literally spoke to them,
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 gave them a message,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:20 and then they would pass it on to the people and their leaders.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 And God gave Israel simple tests
00:05:23 --> 00:05:29 to check who the chosen prophet was and who was not.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 So here's one from Deuteronomy chapter 18.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 You may say to yourselves,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 how can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 does not take place or come true,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 that is a message the Lord has not spoken.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 The prophet has spoken presumptuously,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 and so do not be alarmed.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 And therefore,
00:05:57 --> 00:06:01 or if what the prophet says comes true,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 then they are a prophet from the Lord.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 That's the level of confidence we should have
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 if someone says,
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 God has said to you,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:12 blank,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 and then prove whether it's true.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 We're to listen to a prophet
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 if God is speaking through them.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 Jonah's credentials as a prophet,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:26 his resume,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 was read out by Helen just before in Two Kings.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:34 Jonah had spoken God's message in 780 BC
00:06:34 --> 00:06:39 to the then king called Jeroboam II.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:44 Jeroboam was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 from Lebo Hamath to the Dead Sea
00:06:47 --> 00:06:50 in accordance with the word of God,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 the Lord God of Israel,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 spoken through his servant Jonah,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 son of Amittai,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:59 the prophet from Gath-Hefer.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 God had spoken to Jonah,
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 he'd spoken to the king,
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 the king had obeyed
00:07:05 --> 00:07:10 and done what Jonah had said from God,
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 and a great victory was won.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 So Jonah truly was God's prophet.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 Israel would have been eager to hear
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 what Jonah had to say next.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 He would have been a celebrity.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 He would have been the,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 not just lifestyle guru,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 but lifestyle guru for the nation
00:07:28 --> 00:07:31 that everyone had listened to
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 and they'd had their boundaries restored.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 Did you hear Helen read that verse
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 where it said,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 from the free to the slave,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 everyone was in bitterness
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 and God heard them.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 Jonah had done a wonderful thing
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 by sharing God's word here.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 So imagine their excitement
00:07:49 --> 00:07:52 when God speaks to Jonah again
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 in Jonah 1 verse 1.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 Would God help them win another victory
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 against their enemies?
00:08:01 --> 00:08:04 But as we heard this morning,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 God's second message from Jonah,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:08 through Jonah,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 was not for Israel,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 it was for Nineveh.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 Nineveh.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 Go to the great city of Nineveh
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 and preach against it
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 because its wickedness
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 has come up before me.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 There were prophets
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 during this season of Israel
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 being a divided nation
00:08:28 --> 00:08:33 that went from one brother kingdom
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 to another,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 but never outside Israel's borders.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:42 No prophet had ever been asked
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 to leave Israel
00:08:43 --> 00:08:46 to speak a message to an enemy.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 And the enemy God chose
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 for Jonah to go to
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 was the worst one.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:59 Nineveh was a capital city in Assyria.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 Assyria was this fearsome,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 the words today would be terrorist state.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 Ruthless killers in battle
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 and in politics.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 Nineveh was known as great
00:09:11 --> 00:09:15 for its force and power
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 over the world around it,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 for its great evil,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 but also because of its vast size.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 Apparently, it would take three days
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 to travel from one edge of the city
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 through the middle
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 and out the other side.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 It's a huge place
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 full of tens of thousands of people,
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 at least.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:35 Israel had already paid
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 huge tributes to Assyria
00:09:37 --> 00:09:41 and Nineveh was the seat of power
00:09:41 --> 00:09:45 for that world power.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 It was utterly unthinkable
00:09:49 --> 00:09:51 that any prophet of God
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 would go leave Israel
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 to warn an enemy of God
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 about God's coming judgment.
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 The first prophet
00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 to go beyond Israel
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 on a mission of mercy
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 was Jonah.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 So Jonah had a choice.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 He could obey and go,
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 leave his land,
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 go warn his worst enemy,
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 or not.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 So have a look at verse 3.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 What does Jonah do?
00:10:20 --> 00:10:24 Jonah ran away from the Lord
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 and headed for Tarshish.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 He went down to Joppa.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 He found a ship bound for that port
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 and paying the fare,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 he went aboard,
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 sailed for Tarshish
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 to flee from the Lord.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 Jonah chose
00:10:35 --> 00:10:37 to run away.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 Now, if Jonah had,
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 press play on this, Wendy,
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 if Jonah had had a phone
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 at the time,
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 he would have looked up Google Maps
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 and he would have just checked
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 how far Nineveh is away.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 As you can see here,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 that's round about where he was
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 and there's Nineveh in the northeast,
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 about 1 kilometers away.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 It's a long way.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 It's an intimidating walk.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 But Jonah instead decides
00:11:03 --> 00:11:07 to check his local travel guide
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 and jump on a boat
00:11:09 --> 00:11:12 and head completely
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 the other direction.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 Go to the opposite end
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 of the Mediterranean Sea,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 to the edge of the known world,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 away from the will of God.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 It looks like Jonah was scared,
00:11:27 --> 00:11:31 like an angry, worried kid
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 throwing a temper tantrum.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 But his choice has at least
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 three reasons that Jonah thinks
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 are very good behind it.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 God was asking Jonah,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 a national hero,
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 to help save an enemy.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 And the word in his country
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 in Israel would have been
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 treason.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 A treasonous request from God.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 Jonah was running away
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 from the shame
00:11:58 --> 00:12:00 of becoming a national disgrace.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 It also would have been
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 a suicide mission.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:08 Jonah walking into Nineveh
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 with God's message
00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 would have been like
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 a Jewish rabbi
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 stepping up to a microphone
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 at a public rally
00:12:16 --> 00:12:19 in Berlin in 1940.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 Jonah was running from danger.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 And if Jonah had been bold enough
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 to risk treason
00:12:29 --> 00:12:32 and the dangers of Assyrian hatred
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 toward Israel,
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 would have expected Nineveh
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 to ignore him anyway
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 and for God to destroy them?
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 Jonah ran, actually,
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 because he knew what God was like.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 He'd seen God's words
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 prove miraculously true.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 He knew that God would relent
00:12:53 --> 00:12:56 and show grace to Nineveh
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 if they listened to his message.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 He was running
00:12:59 --> 00:13:02 away from God's grace
00:13:02 --> 00:13:02 to Nineveh.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 He even expected
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 that God would save them.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 Jonah
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 doubted
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 what God was doing
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 was good,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 offering mercy
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 and warning
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 to sinners
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 like the Ninevites.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 And so he ran.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:23 So the book of Jonah
00:13:23 --> 00:13:26 answers for us
00:13:26 --> 00:13:26 this question.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 How does God respond
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 to people
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 who are running away from him?
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 All people
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 running from God
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 like Jonah
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 need an answer
00:13:38 --> 00:13:38 to that question.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:43 In the book of Jonah,
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 we see him run
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 from the will of God
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 in two ways.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 First,
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 in chapters one and two,
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 he runs away
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 in open disobedience.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 And then in chapters
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 three and four,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 from God's will,
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 Jonah runs away
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 internally,
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 revealing a hidden distrust.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:07 In the first half,
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 Jonah runs away.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 He's on a boat
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 that hits a storm.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 He's thrown overboard.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 No more storm.
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 He didn't drown.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 He was eaten by a fish.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:20 He survived three days
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 and was spat up
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 on land.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 That's his
00:14:22 --> 00:14:24 disobedient
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 running away
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 that you've heard about.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:27 It's out in the open.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 Everyone's heard that story.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 But the second half
00:14:32 --> 00:14:32 of the book,
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 Jonah gets
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 a second chance
00:14:35 --> 00:14:35 from God
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 to carry
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 the message
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 to Nineveh.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:39 He obeys.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 Nineveh,
00:14:41 --> 00:14:41 listen,
00:14:42 --> 00:14:42 repent,
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 fast,
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 pray,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 and God
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 relents
00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 from bringing
00:14:46 --> 00:14:48 the disaster.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 And Jonah
00:14:50 --> 00:14:52 is devastated.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:56 Jonah reveals
00:14:56 --> 00:14:58 his hidden distrust
00:14:58 --> 00:14:58 of God
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 in an outburst
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 of anger.
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 He just pours out
00:15:02 --> 00:15:02 his hatred
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 of God's gracious heart.
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 Jonah was running
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 from God
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 even as he obeyed,
00:15:08 --> 00:15:10 but on the inside.
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 So he sat
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 and watched
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 this city
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 from afar,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:20 hoping against hope
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 that God might
00:15:20 --> 00:15:22 still destroy it.
00:15:23 --> 00:15:25 And as he sat there,
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 God was gracious
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 and caring toward him.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 And the book
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 ends
00:15:29 --> 00:15:31 with
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 God still
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 with Jonah
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 offering him
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 his grace.
00:15:35 --> 00:15:37 And we're left
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 with this question.
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 What will
00:15:39 --> 00:15:39 Jonah
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 do?
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 Will he
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 accept
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 God's grace
00:15:43 --> 00:15:43 to him?
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 And that's it.
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 We don't get an answer.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 Series over.
00:15:49 --> 00:15:49 We're done.
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 Well,
00:15:52 --> 00:15:52 at least
00:15:52 --> 00:15:54 that's what
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 we might think.
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 There's a
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 striking similarity
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 to this
00:16:00 --> 00:16:00 abruptly
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 ending story.
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 To a
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 teaching story
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 or a parable
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 that Jesus
00:16:06 --> 00:16:06 tells.
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 In Luke
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 15
00:16:09 --> 00:16:09 in verses
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 1 and 2
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 we get this
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 scene where
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 Jesus is
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 standing
00:16:14 --> 00:16:16 up in front
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 of a crowd
