00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 John wrote to show his readers the greatness of Jesus Christ.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 He warned us to see Jesus as glorious.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:06 By seeing his glory and examining the evidence of who he claims himself to be,
00:01:07 --> 00:01:10 John hopes that we'll become a believer and follower,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 in other terms, a disciple of Jesus.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:15 And as you follow Jesus,
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 and when Jesus becomes more central to your life,
00:01:20 --> 00:01:22 your life will be abundant.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 Jesus himself also has the same aim in mind
00:01:26 --> 00:01:29 as he walked on this earth more than 2 years ago,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 and as he now sits by the right hands of our Heavenly Father
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 to intercede for those who put their trust in him.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:41 He told his disciples that he had come
00:01:41 --> 00:01:45 so that his disciples may have life and have it abundantly.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:51 Today, as we continue in chapter 1 and 2 of John,
00:01:51 --> 00:01:56 let's look at Jesus' invitation to his very first group of disciples
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 and two aspects of who Jesus is.

00:02:03 --> 00:02:10 Last week, our senior minister, Steve, encouraged us
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 and invited us to look, to behold, to think,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 and gaze, ponder, understand, and get who Jesus is
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 and what he has done.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 He ended the sermon with these two points.

00:02:35 --> 00:02:39 Firstly, how much we will align our life with Jesus
00:02:39 --> 00:02:41 and grow in abundant life
00:02:41 --> 00:02:46 is directly proportional to how much we behold Jesus,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 look to Jesus, and understand Jesus.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 We will be filled with all the fullness of God
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 as we grasp the breadth, length, height, and depth
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 of the love of Christ.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 And to the degree that we grow in the abundant life
00:03:04 --> 00:03:08 is a degree that we too will be a voice
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 to the greatness and goodness of Jesus Christ.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 We will see from today's passage
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 how this proposition unfolds in two persons
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 we will meet today.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 So please turn your Bible to John 1.35.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 John 1.35.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:31 When two of John the Baptist's disciples heard him referring to Jesus again,
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 saying, look, the Lamb of God.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 They followed Jesus.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:38 And our passage shows us that
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 Jesus took notice that they were following.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 In verse 38, it says,
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 Jesus saw them.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:51 what do you want?
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 I want us to pause and try to imagine
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 what tone Jesus would use to ask this simple question.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:07 Whichever way I imagine,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 I still find the question,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 what do you want?
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 A bit abrupt
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 and challenging to say it in a friendly way.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 But it does not sound rude.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 When I hear the question,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 I can only think of the time
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 when my kids are much younger
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 and try to net me for something.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 And that's how I answer or question them.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:29 What do you want?
00:04:29 --> 00:04:35 There will be another one of this kind of interaction
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 in the later part of our passage today.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 How are you going to read the Bible?
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 How are you doing with reading the Bible?
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 Nick mentioned about
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 we encourage each other to read the Bible
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 and build a habit of reading
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 at least four or more times a week.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 Are you a morning reader?
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 Reading your Bible in the morning?
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 Or evening reader
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 who has a Bible by your bed
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 and read before you sleep
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 or finish the day.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 Maybe you read the Bible during the day
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 or maybe during lunchtime.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 As you read the Bible,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 how often would you pause and slow down?
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 Especially if it's some kind of dialogue
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 or passage that you have read before.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 Do you ever consider what tone of voice
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 the people you are reading would use?
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 I believe our own culture and background
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 or whether we are reading the Bible
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 in a language that is not our hard language
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 may affect how we read the Bible.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 We need to take care
00:05:38 --> 00:05:42 not to read into what is in front of us.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 Something that may originate
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 from our own culture and background
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 that is not helpful,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 which may hinder us
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 from seeing the complete picture.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 Pause and think.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 Pause to imagine.
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 And use something like the app,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 the word one-to-one,
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 which would be an excellent way of you
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 to behold Jesus better.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 Pause and ask yourself,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 is the perception of Jesus
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 really who he is?
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 Or are you making Jesus
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 into what you want him to be?
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 I hope as you listen
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 to this series of preaching
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 from the first 12th chapter of John,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 you will see Jesus as who he is,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 not what you want him to be.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 Getting back to the question
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 Jesus asked the two disciples
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 of John the Baptist
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 as he saw them following.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 Apart from the tone that he was used,
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 which is maybe hard to conclude,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 we can also consider
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 why Jesus took that moment
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 to turn around and ask them,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 what do you want,
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 after he saw them following.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 John Carson commented that,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:54 on one level,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 what do you want
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 can be a straightforward narrative
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 to invite them
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 to articulate what is on their mind
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 while following Jesus.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 However,
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 it may also be
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 John's intention
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 to guide his reader
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 to reflect
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 on more profound questions.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 It might be that
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 the word,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 the Logos,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 the Messiah
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 who comes to take away
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 the sin of the world,
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 confronts those
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 who make any show
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 of beginning to follow him
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 and demands that they articulate
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 what they really want in life.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 When was the last time
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 you think about such question,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 about what do you really want
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 in your life?
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 What do you really want
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 from Jesus
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 as you follow him?
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 Why are you here
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 at church on Sunday
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 or any,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 on today
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 or any other Sunday?
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 They told Jesus that
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 they want to know
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 where Jesus was staying.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 These two disciples of John,
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 they reply,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 demonstrate their intention
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 to follow Jesus
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 because at that time,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 unlike ancient China,
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 students often move in
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 to stay with their teachers
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 so they want to check out
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 where they're going to live
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 later on.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 In today's term,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 asking where Jesus is staying
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 is like us
00:08:20 --> 00:08:20 checking out
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 our kids' school
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 on orientation day
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 or going to all week
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 before you attend university.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 You want to check out
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 the place,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 you want to check it out
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 for your kids
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 or yourself
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 before taking the next step
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 to be fully committed.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 And Jesus saw
00:08:37 --> 00:08:37 their intention,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 he invited them
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 to,
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 his invitation to them
00:08:42 --> 00:08:42 was,
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 come and you will see.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 And they went
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 and remained with Jesus
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 for the whole day.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 They are invited
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 to come and see the Lord.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 There is an invitation
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 for us
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 as we come
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 to consider Jesus.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 It's not just
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 an invitation
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 for those who are
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 not Christian,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 but it's an invitation
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 for Christians as well.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 It's an invitation
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 for meditation
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 and reflection
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 on Christ.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 That invitation
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 still stands today.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 Jesus is asking you now,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 what do you want?
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 And inviting you
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 to come and see
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 who he is
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 and what he has
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 accomplished for you.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 At these two disciples
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 of John
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 find out who Jesus is.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 One of them
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 named Andrew
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 goes and finds
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 his brother Simon
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 and brings him
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 to Jesus.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 Andrew has become
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 the voice
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 of the greatness
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 and goodness
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 of Jesus Christ
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 after spending
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 a day with him
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 like his previous
00:09:47 --> 00:09:47 teacher,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 John the Baptist.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 We are told
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 in verse 43
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 to 46
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 that another person,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 Philip,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 also went
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 and found Nathaniel
00:09:57 --> 00:09:59 and brought him
00:09:59 --> 00:09:59 to Jesus.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 Philip even used
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 the very similar phrase
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 that Jesus used,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 come and see,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 and extended
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 Jesus' invitation
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 to Nathaniel
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 even after he made
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 some degrading comment
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 about where
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 Jesus is from.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 From Jesus'
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 interaction
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 with Nathaniel
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 between verse 47
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 to the end
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 of chapter 1,
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 we see how Jesus
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 is all-knowing.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 Or if we use
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 one of those
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 big words,
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 we can see Jesus
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 is omniscient.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 Let's read that

00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 When Jesus saw
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 Nathaniel approaching,
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 he said to him,
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 He truly
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 is an Israelite
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 in whom
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 there is no disease.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 How do you know me?
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 Nathaniel asked.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 Jesus answered,
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 I saw you
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 while you were
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 still under the fig tree
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 before Philip
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 calls you.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 Then Nathaniel declared,
00:10:59 --> 00:10:59 Rabbi,
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 you are the son of God,
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 you are the king
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 of Israel.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 Jesus said,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 you believe
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 because I told you
00:11:06 --> 00:11:06 I saw you
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 under the fig tree.

00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 greater things
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 than that.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 I saw you

00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 still under the fig tree

00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 to look to Jesus?

00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 John the Baptist
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 saw Jesus passing
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 and the two
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 of his disciples
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 went and saw
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 where Jesus
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 was staying.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 John also highlighted
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 that Jesus saw
00:11:37 --> 00:11:37 the two of
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 John's disciples
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 following
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 and Jesus
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 saw Nathaniel
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 while he was
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 still under
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 the fig tree

00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 who may be
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 at a crossroad
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 or a dana
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 feeling all alone
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 questioning
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 all the things
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 that are happening
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 in their life
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 where there
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 seems to be
