Three in One

00:00:07 --> 00:00:10 we are in week five of a series in the Trinity
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 and it's a bit of a furphy that we're finishing tonight
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 because technically I'm going to drag it out for another week next week
00:00:16 --> 00:00:18 just because we're all having so much fun.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:24 So next week in the combined service we'll be looking at a particular aspect of the Trinity
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 but we will kind of wrap up tonight as well
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 and hopefully pull together some of the things that we have been wrestling with for the last four weeks.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 So how about I pray because obviously this is a task beyond us
00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 and we'll ask God to reveal himself to us.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 Father God, we thank and praise you for bringing us here tonight.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:43 We thank you for your word.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:45 We thank you that you're a God who wants to be known
00:00:45 --> 00:00:51 and Father we ask that now as we sit and we wrestle with you as Trinity
00:00:51 --> 00:00:56 that you would show yourself to us in a way that we may love you more,
00:00:56 --> 00:00:58 that we may see you more clearly,
00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 that we may grasp more of your majesty
00:01:00 --> 00:01:04 and that we might be better equipped to live lives in response to your glory.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 Father we thank you for drawing us here tonight
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 and ask that you would send us out as different people for your sake.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:11 Amen.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 I went to a conference sometime last year
00:01:17 --> 00:01:19 with a few people from this church, some musos
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 and there was some really great stuff we learnt that day
00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 but there was one line that stuck with me that irritated me
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 and I couldn't figure out why.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 The line that kept getting kind of put out there was that
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 the truth of God is in the in-between.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 I get what the preacher was getting at
00:01:37 --> 00:01:40 but it continued to annoy me more and more and more
00:01:40 --> 00:01:44 and as we got to this series I think I understand why it's annoying me.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:46 The premise that he was putting out there is that
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 that the Christian life is one of paradox.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 So we are forgiven freely and completely
00:01:52 --> 00:01:56 and yet we are called to work hard and do good works.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:01 We are called to feel safe in God and called to fear God.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 And so he was talking about how you can't stay at one end
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 or the other end, you need to be in between the two.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 And again I see what he's getting at
00:02:11 --> 00:02:13 but I think he's actually missing something.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:18 I think if we jump in the middle we're actually reducing either extreme.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 Whereas the Bible doesn't do that
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 and throughout this series we've been focusing on the distinction that is in God
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 that there is three persons that are unique and distinct
00:02:29 --> 00:02:30 and have a unique role
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 and tonight we move to focus on the one God.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:38 And so it would be dangerous for us to just kind of try and jump in the middle
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 because it's awkward for us to hold three and one at the same time.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:44 But the truth is not found in the middle.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 The truth is found holding firmly to what Scripture affirms that God is three
00:02:49 --> 00:02:53 and firmly to what Scripture affirms that God is one.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 And so just like I've begun the last few weeks of the series
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 except for last week
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 I want to begin by stating four things that are true according to Scripture.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 The first one is there is only one God.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 Second one, that God is also three persons
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 Father, Son and Spirit.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 Each member of that Trinity is equally God
00:03:13 --> 00:03:14 eternally God
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 and fully God
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 and lastly
00:03:17 --> 00:03:21 each member of the Trinity is a distinct personal expression
00:03:21 --> 00:03:25 of the one undivided divine nature.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 There is a lot wrapped up in those four statements
00:03:28 --> 00:03:32 and again I want to affirm that it is incomprehensible for us
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 but it's still important.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 That it is difficult to wrestle with
00:03:36 --> 00:03:37 but it's true.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 And so we're going to have a go tonight.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 So let's just quickly think back through where we've been throughout this series.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 We've begun with the Father who is supreme
00:03:46 --> 00:03:47 over the Son and the Spirit
00:03:47 --> 00:03:49 and over all creation.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 It is the Father who has absolute authority
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 authority and it is also the Father who shows love to the Son and the Spirit
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 who is generous in including the Son and the Spirit in His work
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 and is generous in including us in His work.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 We looked at the Son who submits to the Father
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 who joyfully submits to the Father
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 even though He has been exalted.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:12 We looked at the Son who reveals the Father
00:04:12 --> 00:04:15 the Son who substitutes for us
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 so that we can know the Father
00:04:16 --> 00:04:20 and last week Glenn Davies took us through
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 looking at the Spirit
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 who submits to both the Father and the Son
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 whilst at the same time empowers the Son
00:04:26 --> 00:04:31 and also empowers us for the life that God has called us to.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:36 So, so far all of our focus has been on the distinct persons of the Trinity
00:04:36 --> 00:04:39 the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 and on one level breaking it down like that
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 has made it much easier to stomach
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 because it's easy to say
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 the Father is supreme and has authority
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 if we stop there.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 And it's easy to say the Son submits
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 and the Son reveals
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 and the Son does all this thing
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 if we stop there.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 And it's easy to say that the Spirit is the one
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 who submits to both
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 and has a unique role to play
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 and He kind of brings the benefits of Jesus to us
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 if we stop there.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 But the challenge is
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 or the tensions appear to become more stark
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 when we try and bring those three things together.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 Because the Father is God
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 the Son is God
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 and the Spirit is God
00:05:16 --> 00:05:20 and so immediately we have this uncomfortableness
00:05:20 --> 00:05:25 how can one have authority and submit?
00:05:26 --> 00:05:30 How can one send and go and remain one?
00:05:30 --> 00:05:33 And so there are apparent issues for us
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 and this is the point where all the illustrations and analogies
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 that we come up with in the Trinity begin to fall down.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 The water one
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 it's solid, gas and liquid
00:05:43 --> 00:05:47 but it's not three and one at the same time
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 at least in our experience.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 Again I give credit to Nicole Smith
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 who assures me that that is possible
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 but in my experience it's not.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 But in God
00:05:58 --> 00:06:00 as we wrestle with what is uncomfortable
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 and it's okay for us to acknowledge that
00:06:02 --> 00:06:02 that it is awkward
00:06:02 --> 00:06:06 in God we don't find tension.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 I understand why we feel the tension
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 but we don't find tension.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 If we look closely as we have been
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 what we find is majesty.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 The difficulty of understanding the God that we follow
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 feeds our worship.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 It shouldn't belittle it
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 it shouldn't put barriers in
00:06:23 --> 00:06:26 what we do is we begin to understand
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 the depths of a God
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 who is beyond our understanding
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 but a God who wants us to know Him
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 and a God who has revealed Himself
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 sufficiently
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 so that we can know Him.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 The tension that we feel
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 doesn't need to be tension.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 It can be a gift
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 as we begin to see
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 the majesty of a God
00:06:48 --> 00:06:48 that is bigger
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 and greater
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 and more complicated than us
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 and particularly tonight
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 as we see the love
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 that binds the three
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 into one.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 Have John 17
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 open in front of you
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 and I want to fairly quickly
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 run through
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 and pick out a few things
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 that show us
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 the love of God
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 that makes the three one
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 and then I'm going to try
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 and leave a decent chunk of time
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 for us to all wrestle with it
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 with some questions.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 When we look at God
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 the Trinity
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 when we look at God
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 Father, Son and Spirit
00:07:19 --> 00:07:22 we can understand love
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 because in God
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 love is expressed
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 and even enhanced
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 by the distinction
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 that is there.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 For us
00:07:30 --> 00:07:30 the three
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 is a barrier
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 to being one
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 but in God
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 the three actually
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 is what supports
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 the oneness.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 In music
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 there is
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 lots of terms
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 I'm not very musical
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 and I won't pretend that I am
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 but there are lots of terms
00:07:43 --> 00:07:43 that describe
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 the way that you can
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 layer music
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 and add different effects
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 and that sort of thing
00:07:48 --> 00:07:48 the vocalist
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 can correct me
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 if I'm wrong
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 but you can have unison
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 where everybody sings
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 exactly the same thing
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 and that has a value to it
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 and a beauty to it
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 and a power
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 and a force
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 but what you can also have
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 is harmony
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 where you have three people
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 singing slightly different things
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 but to the same song
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 which actually gives a breadth
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 and a depth
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 and a layering
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 and a complexity
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 to the same song.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 I'm not going to try
00:08:15 --> 00:08:15 and demonstrate
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 because that would not work
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 but in God
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 we could have
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 a father who does something
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 a son who does the same thing
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 and a spirit who does the same thing
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 but what we have instead
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 is a harmony
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 of purpose.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 They read the same song
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 but they sing different parts
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 and what we see at the end
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 is not
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 not a barrier
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 but it is something
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 that opens up
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 to see the beauty
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 of the oneness
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 that is God.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 I'm aware that that's a word
00:08:45 --> 00:08:45 that I'm making up
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 but it is a good word.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 There is threeness
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 and there is oneness
00:08:49 --> 00:08:49 in God
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 and when we look
00:08:50 --> 00:08:50 at the three
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 and their different roles
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 we find them
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 very intertwined
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 and we find them
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 following the same tune
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 the same purpose.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 In the threeness of God
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 in the Father, Son
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 and the Spirit
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 we find an equality
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 with submission
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 and authority.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 We talked about this
00:09:09 --> 00:09:09 when we looked at Father
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 and when we looked at Son
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 and when we hear submission
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 or we hear authority
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 we instantly think
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 that is a barrier
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 to us being equal.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 For us submission
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 means being lesser
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 but God unveils
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 that submission
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 and authority
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 can exist between equals
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 because Father
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 and the Son
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 are the same God.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 They are equally God
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 they are fully God
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 they are eternally God
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 and yet the Son
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 joyfully submits
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 to the Father.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 And so we see
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 that these layers
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 these three
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 can actually contribute
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 to us getting
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 a full understanding
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 of the complex God
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 that we follow.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 The love of God
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 is expressed
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 and enhanced
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 by the distinction
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 that exists in him.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 If it was just God
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 doing the same thing
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 it would still be love
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 it might still be impressive
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 but it is not
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 as beautiful
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 it is not
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 as majestic
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 as God managing
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 to express himself
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 in the three persons
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 in differing roles
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 in relationship
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 in perfect harmony.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 In God
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 we find a love
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 that unifies.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 Look at John 17
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 with me
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 beginning where Jesus
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 begins his prayer.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 Father the time has come
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 glorify your Son
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 that your Son
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 may glorify you.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 You granted him
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 authority over all people
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 that he might give
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 eternal life
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 to all those
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 you have given him.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 Now this is eternal life
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 that they may know you
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 the only true God
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 and Jesus Christ
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 whom you have sent.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 I have brought you glory
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 on earth
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 by completing the work
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 you gave me to do
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 and now Father
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 glorify me
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 in your presence
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 with the glory
00:10:45 --> 00:10:45 I had with you
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 before the world began.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 There is this amazing picture
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 in these first five verses
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 and if you look back
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 through John chapters 15
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 and 16 as well
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 where the Trinity
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 is so committed
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 to one another
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 that they are
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 giving themselves
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 to one another.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 So Jesus' prayer here
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 is that he would be glorified
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 but to what end?
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 That the Father
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 would be glorified.
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 The Father's agenda
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 has always been
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 making himself known
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 he is the ultimate
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 he is the supreme
00:11:13 --> 00:11:16 and in the Son's request
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 to be glorified
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 is actually a request
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 for the glory
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 of the Father.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 So close is the relationship
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 between Father and Son
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 that what matters most
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 to the Father
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 has become
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 what matters most
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 to the Son.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 It's the same as
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 when we experience
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 relationships here on earth.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 You begin a relationship
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 there may be things
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 that you've never thought
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 about pouring your time
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 or interest
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 or energy into
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 but the joy of relationship
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 is that your care
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 for the other person
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 enables you to learn
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 to love and care
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 for the things
00:11:46 --> 00:11:46 that they love
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 and care for.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 One of Sal's passions
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 as a younger girl
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 was gymnastics.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 Now I'm not there yet
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 but I'm convinced
00:11:55 --> 00:11:55 that eventually
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 I might be able
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 to love that
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 out of my love for her.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 In our own relationships
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 as we get to know
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 one another more.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 As we give access
00:12:05 --> 00:12:07 to ourselves increasingly
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 we learn to love
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 what the person
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 we are in a relationship
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 with loves.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 And here we see
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 a picture of the Son's
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 love for the Father.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 His desire
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 his prayer here
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 when he asks
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 to be glorified
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 is
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 put me on the cross.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 That's what he's asking
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 the Father to do
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 in this prayer.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 That is the ultimate
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 glorification of the Father
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 is Jesus dying
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 and so he prays
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 please Father
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 kill me
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 so that you
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 get glory.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 It is no sense
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 of divine child abuse.
