Passage: John 17:1-26
00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 It might be stating the obvious, but God is not human.

00:00:09 --> 00:00:13 God is not someone that we can change or we can shape into our image.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:17 God is not something that we can contain.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:24 In John chapter 4, Jesus has this verbal interaction,
00:00:24 --> 00:00:26 I guess sort of a stoush, with a woman
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 who is trying really hard to stop him getting too close to her,
00:00:31 --> 00:00:33 trying to hold him at a distance.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:37 And he's already exposed her vulnerable side
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 when he tells her to go and call her husband
00:00:39 --> 00:00:40 and she says, I don't have one.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:43 And he says, you're right, you've had five
00:00:43 --> 00:00:45 and the bloke you currently live you're not married to.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:47 Live with you're not married to.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 And she tries to turn the conversation to anywhere but herself
00:00:54 --> 00:00:56 and she just goes all religious.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:57 As you do.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:03 And part of Jesus' reply is, God is spirit
00:01:03 --> 00:01:08 and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:12 So God is not human.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 Jesus tells us that he is spirit.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 The scriptures say that the universe shouts at us
00:01:18 --> 00:01:20 displaying his glory.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 We use words to describe God, all-powerful, all-knowing,
00:01:25 --> 00:01:26 and present everywhere.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:32 We sing songs like, immortal, invisible, God-only wise,
00:01:33 --> 00:01:35 or indescribable, uncontainable.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 God is spirit.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:39 God is spirit.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:40 God is not human.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:45 He is vastly greater than it is possible for us to conceive or to imagine.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 He is almighty God who shows us just enough of himself
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 that we might know him and have eternal life.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:59 Perhaps we only see a minuscule bit of God, but it's plenty.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:06 And in our naivety, people make lesser things God.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 So Romans chapter 1 says,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 We worship and serve created things rather than the creator
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 who is forever blessed.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:19 We worship our understandings of the world.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 We make humanity and our thought life the pinnacle of the universe.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 Lawrence Krauss, the physicist on Q&A the other week,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 was glorying in science
00:02:28 --> 00:02:32 and his own extravagant understandings of nothingness.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 You see, without God,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 we don't think of ourselves as specks in a vast universe.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 We have an exalted view of our capacities and our intelligence,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:51 and we exalt ourselves over everything, including God.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 Now we've seen some awesome things about God
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 from the scriptures as we've worked through this series.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:03 We have seen that God, who is spirit, who is hidden,
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 that he has chosen to reveal himself to us, his creatures.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 God has put on flesh.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 He has voluntarily accepted human limitation.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:17 He has entered into time at a particular place.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 He was born into a human family.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:23 He entered his creation as a flesh and blood person,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 Jesus Christ, God in the flesh.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 And so the hidden God of the universe is revealed
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 as a gracious heavenly father
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 in the words and ministry of his son.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 Jesus teaches us to pray to the father.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:42 He tells us that God the father loves the world.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 He says, if you have seen me, you have seen the father.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 And we've been saying that the only way that we can begin to know
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 what God is like, the true God of the universe,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:59 is through his son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 The Lord Jesus himself said, John 14,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 I am the way, the truth, and the life.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 No one comes to the father except through me.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:12 Jesus is the son who serves his father.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 The son of man did not come to be served,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 Jesus said in John 16,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 The father himself loves you
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 because you have loved me
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 and have believed that I came from God.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:35 The bishop, Glenn Davies, spoke to us from John 16 last week
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 and he said that Jesus sends his spirit to us.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 The spirit knows his father's business.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 When Jesus goes back into heaven,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 the spirit continues the ministry of Jesus
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 into all the world.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:53 And Jesus tells us what that ministry will be
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 in John 17, verse 8.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 When he comes,
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 he will convict the world of guilt
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 in regard to sin
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 and righteousness and judgment.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 You look at the Lord Jesus as a man
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 and his ministry was restricted
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 to one town and one village at a time.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 It's wherever his two feet took him.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 And he said to his disciples
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 that it's good for me to go away.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 It's for your good that I go away
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 because when I go,
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 I will send my spirit.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:26 And the ministry of Jesus
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 would be continued by his spirit at work
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 in the hearts of all God's people everywhere.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 And so in Acts chapter 2,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 Peter preaches that this is the fulfilment
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 of Old Testament prophecy
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 where God would pour out his spirit
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 on all flesh.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 What God has revealed to us
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 about himself impacts life.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 I was sitting on the headland
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 down at D.Y. Beach
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 nearly two weeks ago
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 and reading my book,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 having some quiet time,
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 enjoying the peace,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 enjoying the beauty,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 the rainstorms over the water
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 and the sun peeking up from behind.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 Beautiful place to be.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 And a young man about Sam's age,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 Cameron, very polite,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 came up to me and he said,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 can I show you my photos
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 of the sun this morning?
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 And he's got his iPhone
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 or whatever it was in his hands
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 and my reaction inside,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 sort of like,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 oh no, what do you want?
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 And he says,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 can I share with you
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 what I believe about God
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 who made this beautiful creation?
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 And it soon became clear
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 he was a Jehovah's Witness.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 And I think I'm ashamed to say
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 that some of my history with them
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 is to have a point scoring debate
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 over the nature of God,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 blow for blow,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 so you can win,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 who can come off with the most
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 or the least bruises,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 whatever it is.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 But this time was different.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 We had a delightful conversation,
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 man to man,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 person to person,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 that went on for more than an hour.
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 I got sunburned.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 The cloud had gone.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 But it felt like a God-given time.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 Later on, Cameron said
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 that he'd been sitting
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 where I was earlier in the morning,
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 and he was heading home
00:07:14 --> 00:07:14 in his van
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 and he prayed that God
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 would give him someone
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 to share with,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 so he came back
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 and saw me sitting
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 where he had been.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 And God brought Cameron
00:07:24 --> 00:07:24 to a pastor
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 that is in the middle
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 of a preaching series
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 about the nature of God.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:28 Isn't that amazing?
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 But you know,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 it was challenging for me as well
00:07:35 --> 00:07:38 to sit and talk to someone
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 who believed in the creator God
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 of the universe,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:44 who believed in significant things
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 about Jesus Christ,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 who certainly believed
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 in the Holy Spirit of God,
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 was refreshing
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 because you don't even get
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 to first base with atheists.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:59 And I taught scripture
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 after scripture
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 with Cameron
00:08:01 --> 00:08:01 and most of them
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 are fresh in my mind
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 because that's what
00:08:03 --> 00:08:03 I've been preaching.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 And I tried to avoid
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 old chestnuts
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 where I just knew
00:08:08 --> 00:08:08 we'd differ
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 and I knew his Bible
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 would say it different
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 from what my Bible
00:08:11 --> 00:08:11 was.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 It was a waste of time
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 going there.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 And at an incredible
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 number of points,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 Cameron would nod his head
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 and he'd say,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 we believe that.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 We believe that.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 I keep saying
00:08:24 --> 00:08:24 the scripture says,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:25 not what we believe.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:26 The scripture says,
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 Anglicans,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:27 it doesn't matter
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 what Anglicans believe,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:28 it matters what
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 the scriptures say,
00:08:29 --> 00:08:29 doesn't it?
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 And I got to a point
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 where I said to him
00:08:34 --> 00:08:34 that even though
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 we have much in common,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 I suspect we think
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 about Jesus and God
00:08:38 --> 00:08:38 differently.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 And I'll say it quickly,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 it took a long time with him.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 You think Jesus is created.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 I think he is
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 fathered by God.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 That was a big issue
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 in the early church,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 the Nicene Creed
00:08:52 --> 00:08:52 that we say
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 in the communion service
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 was an attempt
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 to put things right
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 and express clearly
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 what the scriptures
00:08:58 --> 00:08:58 are teaching.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 We believe in one God,
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 Sorry,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 we believe in one Lord,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 Jesus Christ,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 the only son of God,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 eternally begotten
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 of the father,
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 true God from God,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 light from light,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 true God from true God,
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 begotten,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 not made,
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 of one being
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 with the father.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 And I said
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 a second thing to him.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:26 I said,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 I think the scriptures
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 show that Jesus is king.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 If you'd been here
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 the last few weeks,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 you would have heard us
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 look to Revelation
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 and the lamb
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 and the father
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 worshipped on the throne
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 of God
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 at the end of the Bible.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 He is God
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 and it is right
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 for us to worship him.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 And thirdly,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 you think the Holy Spirit
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 of God is a force,
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 a power that God sends
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 that we all plug into.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 You know,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 the force be with you,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 Star Wars type movies,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:51 all that sort of stuff.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 And you look at the scriptures
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 and you can see why people
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 would say a thing like that.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 But he is that
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 and he is more.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 He is a person.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 So in John 16,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 Jesus speaks about his spirit
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 and he says that
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 when he comes,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:07 the spirit that is,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 when he comes,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 he will convict the world
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 of sin and righteousness
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 and judgment.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 The spirit is a he
00:10:13 --> 00:10:16 on Jesus' tongue.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:17 In Acts 5,
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 Ananias and Sapphira
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 are accused of
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 lying to the Holy Spirit,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 lying to the person of God.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 In other places,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 we can grieve
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 and quench the Holy Spirit
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 of God.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 He is a person.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 So Cameron and I
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 had this really respectful
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 conversation,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 a delightful conversation.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 And I think it was
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 provocative and it was
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 challenging for both of us.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 I had to go away
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 and reflect on some of the
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 stuff we talked about.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 We had much in common
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 but we differed on Jesus.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 And I would have loved
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 to have prayed with that
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 young man at the end
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 of the conversation
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 but I felt constrained
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 because I would have
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 wanted to pray,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 Dear Lord Jesus
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 or Father.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:11 names by which God
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 reveals himself to us
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 and names that
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 Cameron was not
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 able to own.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 The Lord Jesus
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 has shown us
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 that God can be
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 approached very
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 personally
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 and those
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 of us who have
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 come to know
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 those of us
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 who have come
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 to know him
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 have come through
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 Jesus
00:11:31 --> 00:11:34 but we have come
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 to call him
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 Father.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 I would have loved
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 to have had unity
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 with Cameron
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 but we didn't.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 We had significant
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 differences about
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 Jesus Christ.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 True unity
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 is to be found
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 in Jesus Christ.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 I worship
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 Jesus as Lord
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 and God
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 and King.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 Cameron wanted to
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 hold Jesus
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 as important
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 but he thought
00:12:00 --> 00:12:00 it was wrong
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 to worship him.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 The biggest
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 impact this series
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 has had on me
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 personally
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 and let me tell you
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 I've had the
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 opportunity to tell
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 a number of people
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 this over the last
00:12:12 --> 00:12:12 few weeks
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 and it's just been
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 an absolute delight
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 for me.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:15 I hope it's been
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 a delight for them
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 but it's the
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 privilege that we
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 have in calling
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 God Father.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 We only understand
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 God as Father
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 only through faith
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 in the Lord Jesus.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:33 I am the way
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 the truth
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 and the life
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 no one comes
00:12:35 --> 00:12:35 to the Father
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 except through me.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:38 John 1 says
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 as many as
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 receive Jesus
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 to those who
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 believed in his name
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 God gave the right
00:12:44 --> 00:12:44 to be called
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 children of God.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 Not everyone
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 gets to call
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 God Father
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 only those who
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 receive
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 and believe
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 in the Lord Jesus.
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 The Lord Jesus
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 is the one
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 who brings us
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 into God's family.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:00 William's baptism
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 this morning
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 is about trusting
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 in the promises
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 of the Lord Jesus
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 and entering
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 into the safety
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 and the security
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 of God's family.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 I think it's
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 an absolute joy
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 and it is for me
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 at the moment
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 to see that
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 the Christian life
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 is a journey
00:13:18 --> 00:13:20 in getting to know
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 the Father
00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 and we do that
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 by believing
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 in the Son
