00:00:09 --> 00:00:11 ! Half his hair was bleached white.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:13 He was pretty new to the city.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:15 He didn't know anything about this place.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 He'd even been questioned on his way into the car park,
00:00:21 --> 00:00:22 whether he knew where he was going,
00:00:23 --> 00:00:26 whether he realized he was parking at a church.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 And that kid was pretty troubled.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 Confused in life.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:40 And there were a few things going on that made this passage seem really attractive.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:44 Let not your hearts be troubled.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 Because to that kid, God felt like a boss.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 He was constantly getting angry and frustrated when this kid didn't measure up to him.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 God was like an angry boss.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:14 And 20 years ago, roughly, that was me.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:20 and I have the privilege of opening this passage for you all this morning
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 we're going to let me pray
00:01:23 --> 00:01:26 Father I just want to thank you for how you lead us
00:01:26 --> 00:01:34 and you have so kindly given me the responsibility this morning
00:01:34 --> 00:01:35 of sharing your word with people
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 I thank you that it is powerful
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 and that Lord you have shown us who you are in your son Jesus
00:01:42 --> 00:01:48 please help us to see him this morning through the power of your Holy Spirit

00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 500 years ago
00:02:00 --> 00:02:05 five men had gone out to lunch
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 they were blind
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 their meal had been great
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 because they knew what to water and they walked out arm in arm
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 walking down the main street of their town
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 and then they encountered something strange
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 it was something huge
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 something living
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 something unknown
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 and because they were blind
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 they surrounded this thing
00:02:31 --> 00:02:34 reached out their hands to try and figure out what it was
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 the first said
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 this is a very strong snake
00:02:40 --> 00:02:43 the next thought it was a huge plant
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 with big fan-like leaves
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 another had wrapped his arms around it
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 and said this is the trunk of an ancient tall tree
00:02:52 --> 00:02:56 one ran his hand along it
00:02:56 --> 00:02:56 and said
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 I'm leaning on a wall
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 and the last had trouble holding on to what he said
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 was some kind of a rope
00:03:05 --> 00:03:11 this is my version
00:03:11 --> 00:03:12 this morning
00:03:12 --> 00:03:13 of an ancient parable
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 found in Hindu and Buddhist texts
00:03:15 --> 00:03:17 and the parable is called
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 the blind men
00:03:19 --> 00:03:19 and
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 the what?
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 elephant
00:03:23 --> 00:03:27 different versions of this parable
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 are shared nowadays
00:03:28 --> 00:03:29 by religious sceptics
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 to illustrate how world religions
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 are all holding on to some bit
00:03:36 --> 00:03:37 of the truth
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 about God
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 but it's a truth they can't fully see
00:03:41 --> 00:03:46 it'd be arrogant for any religion to claim otherwise
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 but
00:03:49 --> 00:03:50 Jesus
00:03:50 --> 00:03:53 claimed exclusive rights
00:03:53 --> 00:03:54 in the God business
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 we just heard it in John 14 verse 6
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 when he says this
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 I am the way
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 and the truth
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 and the life
00:04:02 --> 00:04:03 no one comes to the Father
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 except through me
00:04:05 --> 00:04:08 so are the sceptics right?
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 are Christians arrogant?
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 or more to the point
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 is Jesus arrogant?
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 over the next three weeks
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 we'll be looking into Jesus' claims
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 to be the way
