00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 Are you using our Wi-Fi?
00:00:24 --> 00:00:25 I hope not, because we're live streaming.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:27 We need the bandwidth.

00:00:28 --> 00:00:32 You see, we depend on these unseen connections all the time.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 Have you ever had no connection on your phone?
00:00:39 --> 00:00:41 Just inexplicably, just no reception.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:43 Maybe for a whole day.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 Well, I can tell you, that will make me afraid.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 Through that little device, that's how we keep our connections with people.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:02 I was at a training day for church staff a couple of years ago.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:03 It's a little loud, Jase.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 Can you just drop the volume of this down?
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 I will only get louder.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:16 So I was at a training day for church staff, and they asked us all to turn off our phones.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 It was to experience two hours of disconnected time.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:26 And the goal was to help us both feel the anxiety of not having our phone on, not being connected,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 to feel what we might miss out on,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:35 but to also encourage us to reflect and talk about self-care.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 And so we were talking about self-care for a couple of hours, and we were one hour in.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:43 And it was great.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:44 My phone was off.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:46 Everyone was relaxed.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:47 And then this appeared on the screen.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 Nick Freestone, please call senior minister.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:51 Urgent.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 And everyone laughed.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 They thought it was part of the training.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 But I knew it wasn't, and I ran outside because I was terrified.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 I turned on my phone, and I called Steve.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:12 My eldest daughter, Isla, had broken her arm at preschool.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:18 My wife, Sam, who's leading the service today, had also had her phone off,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:24 happened to have her phone off at the same time, and we'd both miss calls to be able to be there with Isla,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:30 to be there in the ambulance with her, but also we met her at the hospital.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:34 That's how disconnected we were.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:38 Disconnecting from people is a fearful thought.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 So when I had the idea to leave Facebook, I was worried.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:51 I contacted everyone on Facebook who I connected there with to say,
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 hey, I'm going, message me or call me from now on.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:57 And then it came to actually switching it off.
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 And I felt afraid.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 I feared disconnection.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 What might I miss from not being here?
00:03:05 --> 00:03:12 And how would I be known by people if I wasn't on Facebook?
00:03:12 --> 00:03:17 It actually, I'm ashamed to say, took me weeks to finally do it.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 Because disconnecting from people makes me afraid.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:27 I'm someone who wrestles with social isolation.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:34 According to studies, social isolation is the fastest-growing negative contributor
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 to mental health issues in our city.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:42 It can develop into illnesses like chronic anxiety and depression and more.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:47 And COVID-19 contributed to this rise.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:51 We're all disconnected from each other and isolated physically.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 But social isolation was a problem before 2020.
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 And it hasn't stopped being a problem after COVID.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:05 And while online tools like social media can connect people in a way that,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 when they can't be connected,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 just like those live streaming at home today unable to be here,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 when online relationships replace the real-world ones,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 it contributes to building social isolation.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 I can tell you that in Chatswood, where we are,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 the high number of us living in high-rise,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 our multi-ethnic and multi-lingual nature as a community,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:37 those things also restrict our natural opportunity for building relationships.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:44 So, suburbs like ours in Sydney have high rates of social isolation.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:53 One in seven people in our city are socially isolated physically,
00:04:54 --> 00:04:59 or they feel socially isolated no matter what.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:05 Chatswood is poor, not in food or water,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:10 but in life-giving relationships that we were created for.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:15 Our busyness and our closeness packed into our skyline
00:05:15 --> 00:05:21 hides a disconnectedness that needs a solution.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:28 These studies suggest joining special interest groups or sports teams or clubs
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 in person or even online, or go get a pet.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:38 But those things alone can't curb the rise of social isolation.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:42 What we actually need are tangible relationships of love.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 Many of us are fearful that we'll never find those.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:50 Or if we have them, we're desperately afraid that we might lose them.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:56 All people in Chatswood need help staying connected in an unbreaking way
00:05:56 --> 00:06:00 to at least one life-giving relationship of love.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 And in today's part of the Bible, that Mel just read,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:10 Jesus was speaking to his disciples in a moment where they were grieving
00:06:10 --> 00:06:15 because they feared disconnection from Jesus,
00:06:15 --> 00:06:19 who loved them and who they loved in return.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:23 He had been telling his disciples that this very hour,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 he would disconnect from them.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 One of them would betray him.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 Another would disown him.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:34 They grieve losing connection with Jesus
00:06:34 --> 00:06:39 and their safety and their identity together with him.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 So look at your Bibles.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 Put your phone down.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 It's all right if you're still looking at it,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 checking to see what Nick's going to do with your phone.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 Pick up your Bible.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 We're going to look at chapter 15.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:57 If you scan back just to the paragraph before from verse 18,
00:06:58 --> 00:07:04 there Jesus describes how the hate and violence against him
00:07:04 --> 00:07:08 and his message, when he's gone,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:13 that's going to shift and pull towards the disciples.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 They don't just fear losing their best friend,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:19 they fear the hatred of the world turning against them
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 when Jesus is gone.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:25 If you flick back even further to chapter 13,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:31 how will these men be known when Jesus goes?
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 I imagine them wondering,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 we can't follow him where he's going.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 Who are we if Jesus is gone?
00:07:42 --> 00:07:45 Jesus is redefining their identity,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 no longer through the proximity to Jesus,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 not even friendship with him,
00:07:50 --> 00:07:55 but defined in their relationships of love with one another.
00:07:56 --> 00:08:00 Jesus understands their fears,
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 losing his protection,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 losing their identity as his disciple,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 and losing his love.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:15 One way you can see their fear is more than just grief,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 is in verse 5 of our passage today.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:20 So have a look, verse 5 of chapter 16.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 Jesus says there,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:25 none of you asked me where are you going?
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 If you've been with this in the last few weeks,
00:08:29 --> 00:08:32 you might remember that Peter actually did ask exactly that,
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 word for word,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 Jesus, where are you going?
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 Did Jesus forget?
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 Is there an error in the gospel?
00:08:44 --> 00:08:48 Imagine a little child wakes up one morning
00:08:48 --> 00:08:52 and sees their parent already dressed
00:08:52 --> 00:08:55 and walking out the door going to work.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 The little child yells out,
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 where are you going?
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 What the child is feeling is,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 why are you leaving me?
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 They don't care where the parent is going.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 They fear disconnection from their loved one.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:22 This is how Jesus can say that no one asks where he is going,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:26 because Jesus hears Peter's grieving heart cry out,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 why are you leaving?
00:09:30 --> 00:09:33 So, Jesus promises that he will give them someone
00:09:33 --> 00:09:39 to keep them and all his followers to come,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 a connection with him when he is gone,
00:09:43 --> 00:09:47 of love, security, and identity.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:55 So, Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will come.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 He's already promised this in previous chapters.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 Dan, two weeks ago, when he preached,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:05 he described it as God's ongoing presence with us.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 Jesus' ongoing presence with his disciples.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:14 But here, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit by a new name,
00:10:14 --> 00:10:18 three times, the Spirit of Truth.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 And this is crucial,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 because the Spirit of Truth
00:10:24 --> 00:10:29 is how our isolated humanity need,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 what our isolated humanity need.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:37 Because the Spirit of Truth connects us to Jesus
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 through the Bible.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 Jesus promises that this connection will come,
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 but only if he gets up from this meal
00:10:46 --> 00:10:49 with his disciples and goes to the cross.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:55 So, here is how this Spirit of Truth,
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 how Jesus says the Holy Spirit
00:10:57 --> 00:11:00 will connect us to him
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 in a life-giving relationship of love.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 When he comes,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 the Spirit of Truth will do three things.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 Convict the world,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:14 witness to all the truth about Jesus,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:17 and glorify Jesus.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 So, first,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 the Spirit of Truth comes
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 to convict the world.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 Securing convictions
00:11:26 --> 00:11:29 is the role of the prosecutor.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 You've probably seen it on TV.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:33 You might have even been in a courtroom,
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 and you've seen a prosecutor at work.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 In that moment,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 they're not an advocate
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 or a helper,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:43 as we've heard the Holy Spirit described so far,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 even in our passage today in verse 7.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 So, how does the Holy Spirit also act,
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 not just as a helper or an advocate,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 but also as a prosecutor?
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 Have a look at verse 8.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 When he, the Holy Spirit, comes,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 he will prove the world
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 to be in the wrong
00:12:05 --> 00:12:08 about sin, righteousness, and judgment.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 It's a nice sunny day today,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 so it's easy to imagine.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 But imagine
00:12:15 --> 00:12:19 someone going out for a swim at a beach.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 It's calm.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 It's warm.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 The sun is,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 but that great balance of
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 warming you up,
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 but not beating you down.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 And a swimmer goes out
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 just past the little waves
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 and swims out easily.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 He's having a great time.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:41 But then a lifeguard blows the whistle,
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 calls out in the megaphone,
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 not safe!
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 The swimmer hears
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 and tries to swim back,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 but there's this outgoing current
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 against them.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 They thrash against it,
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 but they're too weak to fight it.
00:12:54 --> 00:12:54 They become afraid.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 They begin to panic.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 They accept their fate,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 and...
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 I'm just going to leave it there.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 You have to wait
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 to find out what happens.
00:13:03 --> 00:13:07 The Holy Spirit is a helper
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 and a prosecutor
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 who warns all people,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 all sinful people,
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 of their error,
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 like a lifeguard
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 alerting a swimmer.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 See, people in Chatswood
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 don't know that they're drowning.
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 An abundant life
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 that they need,
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 they're not going to get
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 in the mall.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 They're not going to find it
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 on their screen.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 Not even in their deepest relationships
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 with those around them.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 They need a relationship
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 with the God
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 who created them.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 And the whole reason
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 that Jesus came to earth
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 was to offer that connection
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 to all people,
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 those same people
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 who don't know
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 they need that connection.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 Jesus calls out to the swimmer
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 through the Holy Spirit
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 with a message of conviction.
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 You're not safe!
00:14:00 --> 00:14:05 The Spirit needs to warn us
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 in the first place
00:14:06 --> 00:14:09 because all people
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 get their response
00:14:11 --> 00:14:14 to sin and unrighteousness
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 and judgment
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 completely wrong
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 without Jesus.
00:14:19 --> 00:14:21 I read this week
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 that Tim Keller,
00:14:23 --> 00:14:25 when he had little kids at home,
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 was watching them
00:14:27 --> 00:14:31 watch cheesy Bible cartoons
00:14:31 --> 00:14:33 on TV.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 I don't know if you've seen
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 the kind of cartoons
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 I'm talking about,
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 but they're oversimplified
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 children's stories.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 And he overheard
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 this teaching
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 in those cartoons.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 They summarized the Bible
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 like this.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 man's attempt
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 to find
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 and connect
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 with God.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:56 And Tim Keller says,
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 that's the Bible
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 backwards.
00:15:02 --> 00:15:02 Instead,
00:15:03 --> 00:15:05 the Bible is
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 man's constant
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 running from God,
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 away from his love
00:15:11 --> 00:15:11 and authority.
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 And it's God's
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 constant pursuit
00:15:16 --> 00:15:16 of people
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 to show them
00:15:17 --> 00:15:19 his love.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 Do you hear the difference?
00:15:21 --> 00:15:26 many of us
00:15:26 --> 00:15:26 Christians
00:15:26 --> 00:15:28 hear the warning
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 of our sin
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 against God,
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 our need to be righteous
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 before him,
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 and the coming judgment
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 of sin
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 that leads to death
00:15:35 --> 00:15:35 and hell,
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 and we try to avoid it
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 by our strength
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 of mind
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 and will
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 on our own.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 A follower of Jesus
00:15:45 --> 00:15:47 is not
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 like a swimmer
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 who can beat
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 the current.
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 but one
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 who feels
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 sin's power
00:15:54 --> 00:15:54 over them
00:15:54 --> 00:15:56 and calls out
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 to the lifeguard
00:15:57 --> 00:15:57 for help.
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 Jesus says
00:16:01 --> 00:16:01 in our passage
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 today
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 that we cannot,
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 in verse 12,
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 bear this truth
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 alone.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:12 The warning call
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 of the Holy Spirit
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 calls out
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 our inability
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 to swim
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 against the
00:16:16 --> 00:16:16 undertow
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 of sin,
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 trusting in our
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 own good behavior
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 our own power
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 to change
00:16:22 --> 00:16:22 ourselves,
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 our own ability
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 to prove
00:16:25 --> 00:16:25 ourselves
00:16:25 --> 00:16:27 worthy of life
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 beyond judgment
00:16:28 --> 00:16:28 day.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 And the Holy Spirit
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 reveals
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 how Jesus
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 meets
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 those needs
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 for purity,
00:16:36 --> 00:16:36 for righteousness,
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 and to be pleasing
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 before God.
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 Even before
00:16:40 --> 00:16:42 we've asked
00:16:42 --> 00:16:42 to be saved.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 Even before
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 we know
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 we are drowning.
00:16:46 --> 00:16:49 and if you've
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 ever wrestled
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 against God,
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 if you've heard
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 about God
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 in the Bible
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 or you've heard
00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 about Jesus
00:16:55 --> 00:16:57 somewhere along
00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 in your journey
00:16:58 --> 00:16:58 or maybe even
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 right now
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 today,
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 you're discovering
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 sinfulness,
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 your unrighteousness,
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 your fear
00:17:06 --> 00:17:06 of judgment,
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 your worry
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 about disconnection
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 from God,
00:17:10 --> 00:17:12 that is a sign
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 that the Spirit
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 of truth
00:17:15 --> 00:17:15 is at work
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 in your life
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 right now
00:17:17 --> 00:17:19 through conviction.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 And it will happen,
00:17:22 --> 00:17:22 the Spirit
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 will work
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 even before
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 you know
00:17:25 --> 00:17:25 Jesus yet,
00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 even before
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 you are
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 His follower.
00:17:31 --> 00:17:32 What an amazing
00:17:32 --> 00:17:32 power.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:35 you don't
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 receive the
