Passage: Mark 14:27-50


00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 I've been involved in ministry now for about 25 years.
00:00:06 --> 00:00:13 And one of the things, the overwhelming hurts that happens in ministry
00:00:13 --> 00:00:20 that I don't think, even after 25 years, you don't get over and it hurts every time,
00:00:20 --> 00:00:29 is people who make decisions, who are putting Jesus clearly to one side in their life.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 And you see people making decisions for something against Jesus.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:40 Or people who are confronted with real difficulty in their life
00:00:40 --> 00:00:46 and who walk away from Jesus as a result of that real difficulty
00:00:46 --> 00:00:52 because of the assumption that God's not in control or that he's not good in that moment.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 Either way, it's someone who once confessed a relationship with Jesus
00:00:57 --> 00:01:02 who would move away from him because of decision or because of difficulty in some way.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 As a pastor who wants to see people flourishing in a relationship with Jesus
00:01:06 --> 00:01:11 and putting Jesus at the center of life, that is a pain that just endures.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:17 And it has happened so much over 25 years.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:25 One thing that it's taught me is that presumption is always dangerous for anyone who follows Jesus.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:31 I, as many have done so as they've sat in churches and been Christian for years,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 have seen many fall away over that time
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 because they've ultimately not understood what it is to follow Jesus,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 not actually understood what it means to actually be a Christian.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:49 That's partly because in the Western world especially,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:58 there's this dangerous assumption that to follow Jesus or to be Christian
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 means that you have to work hard at being really good.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:08 And it means that you believe that God exists to serve me
00:02:08 --> 00:02:14 by helping me feel good and feel happy and feel secure and at peace in life.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:15 That's God's goal for me.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:16 That's his job for me.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:20 And also believing that even though God made the world
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 and he controls everything in the world,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 he's only active and involved in the world
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 whenever I need him to resolve a problem for me.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 And the rest of the time, his job is to stay out of my way,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:35 except for a Sunday, for an hour or so on Sunday,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 and it may be a Bible study group and stuff like that,
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 but predominantly stay out of my way except when I need him to help.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:49 Now, the technical term for those three things is moralistic therapeutic deism.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 That's the technical term for it,
00:02:51 --> 00:02:57 and it's actually an heresy that has dominated in the Western world.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:07 That view of Christianity is ultimately a rejection of Jesus
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 and a rejection of the Christian faith.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:15 It's a total misunderstanding of who Jesus is and what Jesus came to do.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 And so to be clear on what it means to be a follower of Jesus,
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 we must be clear on who he is,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 what he came to do,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 and what he requires of me.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 You need to be clear on those things.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 And we've seen it in 13 weeks now,
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 or 12 weeks now in Mark's gospel,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 we've seen it again and again and again.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 The answer to those questions.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 And so I'm going to kind of wrap it up
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 as we bring a closure to this series
00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 and bring clarity on that once again.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 So if you've got your Bibles open,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 Mark 14,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 we're going to begin in chapter 13.
00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 And chapter 13,
00:03:58 --> 00:04:01 verses 32 to 37,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 set the scene for 14,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:06 chapter 14.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 And what you notice there
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 is the repetitiveness
00:04:09 --> 00:04:12 of statements like,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:13 be on your guard,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 be alert,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 keep watch,
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 don't sleep.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:17 Be ready,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 be alert,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 because what Jesus is saying here
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 to his disciples
00:04:23 --> 00:04:26 is it's going to be tough.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 Now,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 these are the disciples
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 who have been with Jesus
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 and they were saying,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 we're with you,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:32 Jesus.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 And they're with you,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 especially Jesus,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:39 when all this powerful stuff
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 has happened in Mark 1 to 9,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 where he's healed dead people
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 and he's driven out demons
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 and he's raised the dead
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 and done miraculous things,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:49 powerful things
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 and people have gone,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:50 wow,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 this is amazing stuff.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 And the disciples
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 have kind of followed Jesus
00:04:54 --> 00:04:54 like,
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 Jesus is with us,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 we're with him kind of thing,
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 we're just kind of
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 almost as powerful as he is.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 And now he's saying to them,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 kind of switching tone
00:05:05 --> 00:05:05 a little bit now
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 and saying,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 keep watch,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 be on your guard,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 don't be afraid.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:11 Now,
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 when everyone says,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:12 don't be afraid,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 you go,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:13 what do you mean?
00:05:14 --> 00:05:14 We're afraid of what?
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 You know,
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 and this is,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 don't be afraid
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 when you're persecuted
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 and put on trial
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 for my sake.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 It's like,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:23 well,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 this is a tone,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 change,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 shift the gear for Jesus
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 and then straight away,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:28 what you see
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 as you come into chapter 14
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 is that the chief priests
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 and the teacher of the law
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 are waiting to do
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 exactly to that,
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 to Jesus that.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 They're wanting to kill Jesus.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 So have a look,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:42 verse one there.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 Now,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 the Passover
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 and the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 which are the two major,
00:05:49 --> 00:05:53 or the major collected feasts
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 for the highlight,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 if you like,
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 of the Jewish religion.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 This is the pinnacle for them.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 This is their Christmas,
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 Easter kind of thing.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 And they were two days away
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 and the chief priests
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 and the teachers of the law
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 were looking for some sly way
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 to arrest Jesus
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 and kill him,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 but not during the feast,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 they said,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 or the people may write.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 That's their major concern
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 is that people may write
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 during the feast.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 Not the fact that
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 they're going to murder someone,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 they're just concerned
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 that people might write.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:24 Now,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 we already know
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 in Mark 4,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 throughout Mark,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 that Jesus is on the death list
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 of the power brokers.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 And this became
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 their particular passion
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 in Mark 11
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 when Jesus pronounced
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 judgment on the temple
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 and the religious establishment.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 And so the time has now come
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 for them to put their plan
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 into action,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 but because of the feast,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 because they've got
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 this major religious ceremony
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 they've got to be partaking in,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 they've got two days
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 in order to do their dirty work.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 It's kind of like,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 come on guys,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 quick, quick,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 hurry up the plan,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 two days to murder Jesus
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 so that we can get to communion.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 Kind of seems like
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 a bit of a disconnect here
00:07:02 --> 00:07:02 a little bit.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:06 And while they're plotting this,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 Jesus and his mates
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 are in Bethany
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 for a pleasant evening
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 or so it would appear.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 And as they're reclining
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 at the table,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 they witness a remarkable event.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:18 It says,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 a woman came with an alabaster jar
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 of very expensive perfume,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 made a pure nard.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 She broke the jar
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 and she poured the perfume
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 on his head.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 If you flipped over
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 to John chapter 12,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 verse 3,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:32 you will notice
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 that this woman
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 is Mary,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 the sister of Lazarus.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:39 Mary
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 unexpectedly
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 approached her
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 reclining lord
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 carrying a priceless jar
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 of imported perfume,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 possibly a family heirloom.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 She breaks the neck
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 of the flask.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 She pours a generous portion
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 on Jesus' head
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 which is anointing him
00:07:59 --> 00:08:02 as both king
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 and for burial
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 and then poured the rest
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 on his feet
00:08:08 --> 00:08:08 as an act
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 of cleansing his feet,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 acknowledging that
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 she is his servant.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 John 12 tells us
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 that she then
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 humbly wiped
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 his feet clean
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 with her hair.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 She evidently
00:08:24 --> 00:08:24 had enough.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 this moment
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 here
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 was
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 an intensely
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 fervent
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 expression
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 of devotion
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 to Christ.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 And in fact,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 as strong
00:08:40 --> 00:08:40 as an act
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 of devotion
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 as you will find
00:08:42 --> 00:08:42 anywhere
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 in the Bible.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 this woman
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 takes her
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 greatest
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 earthly
00:08:50 --> 00:08:50 treasure
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 and
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 with it
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 she reveals
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 that in fact
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 Jesus
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 is her greatest
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 treasure.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 We can assume
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 that she gave
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 no thought
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 at all
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 to what others
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 thought of her actions.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 But in verse 4
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 we find out
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 some of those
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 present
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 were saying
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 indignantly
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 to one another
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 why this
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 waste of
00:09:17 --> 00:09:17 perfume.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 It could have
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 been sold
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 for more
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 than a year's
00:09:21 --> 00:09:21 wages
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 and the money
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 given to the
00:09:23 --> 00:09:23 poor
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 and they
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 rebuked her
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 harshly.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:27 Again,
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 if you go over
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 to John 12
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 it helps us
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 to see
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 that the first
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 person to
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 respond
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 to this
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 moment
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 is Judas
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 the man
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 who knew
00:09:39 --> 00:09:39 the price
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 of everything
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 but the value
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 of nothing.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 he instantly
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 calculates
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 in this
00:09:45 --> 00:09:45 moment
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 wastage
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 a year's
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 wage
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 possibly
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 something in
00:09:54 --> 00:09:54 the order
00:09:54 --> 00:09:54 of $35
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 to $40
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 in today's
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 terms.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 What a waste
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 they rebuked
00:09:59 --> 00:09:59 this woman
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 harshly
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 and the
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 original language
00:10:02 --> 00:10:02 means
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 that they
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 snorted
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 their disgust
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 like angry
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 horses.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:13 they saw
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 something
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 very different
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 than fervent
00:10:16 --> 00:10:16 devotion.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 Jesus
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 comes to
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 her defense
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 in verse 6
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 leave her
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 alone
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 why are you
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 bothering her
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 she has
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 done a
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 beautiful
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 thing to
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 me.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:25 Jesus
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 was fully
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 aware of
00:10:27 --> 00:10:27 her motive
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 of love
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 it was
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 simply done
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 and to
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 for Jesus
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 with no
00:10:32 --> 00:10:32 thought at
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 all given
00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 to whether
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 it was
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 practical
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 or even
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 seen as
00:10:36 --> 00:10:36 being
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 sensible
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 and in
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 fact
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 Jesus
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 defends
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 Mary's
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 action
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 because
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 it placed
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 him
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 before
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 everything
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 else.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:49 In fact
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 verse 7
00:10:50 --> 00:10:50 have a look
00:10:50 --> 00:10:50 at that
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 the poor
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 you will
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 always have
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 with you
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 and you
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 can help
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 them
00:10:56 --> 00:10:56 anytime
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 you want
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 but you
00:10:59 --> 00:10:59 will not
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 always
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 have
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 me.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 Now
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 Jesus
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 is not
00:11:04 --> 00:11:04 saying
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 in any
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 sense
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 you're
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 not to
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 help
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 the poor
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 in fact
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 that's
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 far
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 from
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 it.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 What
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 he is
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 commending
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 this woman
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 for here
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 at this
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 moment
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 is that
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 she
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 put him
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 first
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 totally
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 first
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 she gave
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 everything
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 she surrendered
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 everything
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 to Jesus
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 and her
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 act of
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 worship
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 is insightful
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 verse 8
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 says
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 she did
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 what
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 she
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 could
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 her
00:11:37 --> 00:11:37 giving
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 her
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 everything
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 is going
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 to be
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 different
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 from the
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 person
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 beside her
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 on either
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 side
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 of what
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 it looks
00:11:43 --> 00:11:43 like for
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 them to
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 give
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 their
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 everything
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 she did
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 what
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 she
00:11:48 --> 00:11:48 could
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 and
00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 Jesus
