00:00:12 --> 00:00:16 and you also came to redeem us to give us life as you have life forever.
00:00:16 --> 00:00:23 We pray that as we gather this morning, and especially as you speak your word of life to us,
00:00:24 --> 00:00:26 that we might come alive in Christ.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 And we ask for your miraculous work to be done by your spirit through your word now in Jesus' name.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:32 Amen.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:43 Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer and a governor of Puerto Rico in the early 16th century.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 Quite significant things back in those days.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:56 But what he is known for broadly outside of Puerto Rico is for his search for the fountain of youth.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:06 A spring that restores youth to anyone who drinks from it or anyone who bathes in it.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:13 Unfortunately, he never discovered the fountain of youth, but he discovered Florida instead.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:19 And perhaps somewhat ironically, the mecca for retirement for US citizens.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:27 Today, however, some scientists are keeping his dream alive.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:36 These thinkers believe that genetic engineering or the discovery of anti-aging drugs
00:01:36 --> 00:01:43 could extend human life far beyond its current natural course.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:52 And so in 2015, it was reported that Google was throwing its might and its billions of dollars
00:01:52 --> 00:01:57 into a project to slow the aging process.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:04 I assume mainly for Mark Zuckerberg, but as a young guy, he just sees much more of a world to conquer.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:13 Now, researchers think it's possible for humans to live until they're a thousand years old.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:25 Now, this project, while it has its positive sides, has many philosophers and ethicists deeply concerned.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:32 They're seeing that there are enormous amount of negatives to living so long.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:42 There's the prospect of boredom as your daily routine drags on and on and on and on and on and on.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:48 The prospect, in fact, of having too many memories to remember them all
00:02:48 --> 00:02:55 and the really important ones from your early days actually being forgotten by the time you get to 800, 900 years old.
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 There's also the problem.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:05 They figure that if your life hasn't got purpose at 70, it's not going to have purpose at 700.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:13 And there's also the unappealing prospect of a thousand-year reign for the likes of King Jong-un of North Korea.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:18 But what if you could?
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 What if you could have life?
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 I mean, real, enduring life.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:35 Life without pain, without fear, without bondage, without failure, without the constant feeling of disappointment.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 That would be different.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:43 You know, a thousand years of life as it currently is, that's not so appealing.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:51 And for Mission Month, we've been wrestling with three of these outrageous claims of Jesus.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 John 14, 6.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 Jesus claims to be the way, the truth, the life.
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 And today we're looking at the final one, the life.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 He's claimed to be the life.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:06 And in John 10, 10, just before he says this, he says that Jesus says,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:12 I have come that you might have life and have it to the fullest.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:20 And so there's four things that I want to say about this claim to Jesus' life.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 Normally three, today four.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 It's not going to go longer, however, so just put that at rest.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 Firstly, why Jesus claims to be the life.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:32 Secondly, his life challenges our minds.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 Thirdly, his life gives us hope.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 And finally, his life gives us purpose.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:41 So firstly, why Jesus claims to be the life.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:46 The Bible declares that God is eternal.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:53 Even if the Bible doesn't declare it, if there is a creator, he, by nature, has to be eternal.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 Philosophers agree with that.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 God's life has no beginning.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 It has no end.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:05 And the God of the Bible claims to be that God who has no beginning, no end.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:11 In fact, a psalm that was written by Moses helps us to see God as always living.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:20 Before the mountains were born, or you brought forth the earth and the world from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:24 God never needed to be made.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 God always is.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 Not just always was, but always is.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:41 In a brief 120 years, unless of course Google intervenes, this planet will be populated by more than 10 billion brand new people.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:52 And the current 7.6 billion of us who occupy the earth at the moment will have vanished off the face of the earth, but not God.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:57 Never had a beginning, therefore depends on nothing for his existence.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:02 He doesn't depend on resources of this world or the universe for his existence.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:07 God doesn't need air to breathe or food to eat or water to drink.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 He doesn't need help for the work that he decides to do.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:18 God always has, within his own life, everything he needs for being.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:24 Everything he needs for who he is as God and for doing all that he chooses to do.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:31 Everything in this world needs God, but he doesn't need anything in this world.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:44 This God does not have it within himself, by nature, to go out of existence.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:52 Just as we do not have it in our nature to not go out of existence.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 We do not have it in our nature to live forever.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:04 We all age, we all die, because that is our present nature.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 And that is the case for everything in this world.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:11 Increasingly so.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:16 Once upon a time, you could buy a TV and it would be a family investment.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 For years.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 Now, two years warranty.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 If you're lucky.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:31 God continues forever unchanged because it is his eternal nature.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 God is self-existent.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 That is, he has life within himself.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 And God is also self-sufficient.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 He has everything he needs for his life in himself.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:48 And that is why Jesus claims to be the life in John 14.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:56 It's the natural extension of his claim to be God.
00:07:56 --> 00:08:06 Jesus claims to be the life because he is the God who is self-existent and self-sufficient.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:11 Last week, we took a quick glimpse at John chapter 1.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:16 And there, John asserts that Jesus is the son of God.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 He is equal with God.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:24 And that he is God's agent for creating all that is.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:29 And it also says this in verse 4 of John 1.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 In him was life.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:36 And that life was the light of all mankind.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:43 And a couple of chapters later, in John 5.26, that claim is expanded and clarified.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:51 As the father has life in himself, he has granted the son also to have life in himself.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:59 Jesus is the life because he shares in the self-existing life of God.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:05 That's the first reason why Jesus claims here to be the life.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:14 But secondly, as you go through John's gospel, what you notice is that John's main concern
00:09:14 --> 00:09:26 is that this self-existing life of Jesus, because he's God, is in fact light for humanity.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:35 That is, John's main interest in Jesus being the life and the light is for the salvation of humanity.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:39 Jesus is the source of eternal life.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:44 Jesus has come to impart his life to us.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:59 In John 3, Jesus explains his death on the cross in terms of it being salvation and eternal life to all who believe in him.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:13 So Jesus is the life, firstly because he's the God who always existed and from whom all life and existence flows.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:22 And because he's the savior of humanity and the source of eternal life for those who believe in him.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:27 In fact, he makes this claim specific in John 11.25.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:31 I am the resurrection and the life.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 See what he's saying there?
00:10:34 --> 00:10:41 What he's saying is my life conquering death means life for you.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:47 The one who believes in me will live even though he die.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:52 And whoever lives by believing in me will never die.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 His resurrection guarantees our life.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:05 And so all of his claims here in John hang on the resurrection of Jesus.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:15 If he didn't come back from the dead, then all of his claims to be the life are null and void.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 The apostle Paul said the same thing.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:25 If the resurrection didn't happen, then Christianity is pointless.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 It's useless.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 It's a fallacy.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:33 And so what I want to do now is I want to jump back into Mark 16.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:43 And allow the resurrection of Jesus to challenge us, to give us hope and to change the course of our lives.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:52 This word of challenge for our minds is there in Mark 16 verse 6.
00:11:52 --> 00:12:08 Now that verse there is a challenge to our minds.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:14 Jesus, that is the challenge is that Jesus came back to life after he was executed by the Romans.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:21 The Bible says that after Jesus was killed, he came back to life and he appeared to his followers.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:36 The Bible says that the reason why the followers of Jesus didn't go home after his execution
00:12:36 --> 00:12:46 and the reason why Christianity exploded to become dominant in the Roman Empire within 200 years
00:12:46 --> 00:12:54 and today the largest and most widespread of all religious faiths on the planet today
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 penetrating every culture
00:12:57 --> 00:13:02 is because Jesus rose from the get.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:07 And yet, this is Chatswood, 2018
00:13:07 --> 00:13:11 in increasingly secular society
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 and most people around us just don't believe that
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 and I get that.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 And so in challenging
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 our minds
00:13:19 --> 00:13:22 it's so crucial for us here
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 not to be intellectually lazy.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 Before we reject the resurrection
00:13:28 --> 00:13:31 some thought
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 needs to be given to alternative
00:13:33 --> 00:13:37 historically plausible explanations
00:13:37 --> 00:13:41 as to the reason why things the way they are.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 Now a general trend in our society
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 is rather than looking at the evidence
00:13:47 --> 00:13:51 what follows instead is accusations
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 that the texts
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 like for instance Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 are not reliable.
00:13:56 --> 00:14:00 That's a general trend in our society
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 is to
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 you can't trust anything
00:14:03 --> 00:14:03 that was
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 you know
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 from the past.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 So in
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 to justify ignorance
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 there's a temptation to call
00:14:12 --> 00:14:14 the historical documents
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 legends
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 made up by
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 gullible people
00:14:17 --> 00:14:19 and so Mark challenges that
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 here for us.
00:14:20 --> 00:14:22 In fact, three times in eight verses
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 in Mark
00:14:23 --> 00:14:25 15 verse 40
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 in 15 47
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 and in 16 verse 1
00:14:29 --> 00:14:31 Mark
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 specifically
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 writes down
00:14:33 --> 00:14:33 the names
00:14:33 --> 00:14:36 of the eyewitnesses
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 who saw
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 it all
00:14:39 --> 00:14:41 and Mark
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 writes down the name
00:14:42 --> 00:14:42 Mary Magdalene
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 Mary
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 the mother of
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 James
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 and Salome.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:51 so why
00:14:51 --> 00:14:53 why three times
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 does he mention it?
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 Three times he mentions
00:14:57 --> 00:14:57 these names
00:14:57 --> 00:15:01 and the answer
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 of one New Testament
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 scholar
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 who understands
00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 a whole lot more
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 about this stuff
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 and historical
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 ancient
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 historiography
00:15:09 --> 00:15:09 than I do
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 which is not hard
00:15:11 --> 00:15:13 says that
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 that the way
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 this is written
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 is the marks
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 of ancient
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 historians
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 not legend
00:15:19 --> 00:15:19 even ancient
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 historians
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 outside of the Christian faith
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 not legend
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 these women
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 are clearly
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 described
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 as eyewitnesses
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 and so if you look
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 at 15 verse 40
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 some women
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 were
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 watching
00:15:33 --> 00:15:35 again
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 in 15 47
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 Mary Magdalene
00:15:37 --> 00:15:37 and Mary the mother
00:15:37 --> 00:15:39 of Ioses
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 saw

00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 to the burial
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 and the resurrection
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 of Jesus
00:16:13 --> 00:16:15 this in itself
00:16:15 --> 00:16:18 is slam dunk proof
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 that the resurrection
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 is history
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 not legend
00:16:21 --> 00:16:23 according to historians
00:16:23 --> 00:16:28 one of the strongest
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 early arguments
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 however
00:16:30 --> 00:16:32 against the truth
00:16:32 --> 00:16:34 of Christianity
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 is that the accounts
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 of the resurrection
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 of Jesus
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 historical accounts
00:16:38 --> 00:16:38 of the resurrection
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 of Jesus
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 are based
00:16:40 --> 00:16:42 on the eyewitness
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 testimony
00:16:43 --> 00:16:45 of women
00:16:45 --> 00:16:47 that's one of the big
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 arguments against it
00:16:48 --> 00:16:51 a second century
00:16:51 --> 00:16:53 philosopher

00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 incredibly strong

00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 ancient cultures
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 women were
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 marginalized
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 and it was
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 hard to believe
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 in their
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 testimony
00:17:45 --> 00:17:48 and so people
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 like Celsus
00:17:49 --> 00:17:49 said
00:17:49 --> 00:17:51 Mark
00:17:51 --> 00:17:52 Matthew
00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 Luke
00:17:53 --> 00:17:53 John
00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 these guys

00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 it up
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 then he would
