00:00:30 --> 00:00:35 We have been looking into the Gospel according to Mark in the last few weeks,
00:00:35 --> 00:00:40 which is the good news about Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:47 Messiah is referring to the person expected by the Jews to come and set them free.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:52 The Jews were told about the Messiah when they go to the temple,
00:00:53 --> 00:00:55 and they hear it from the teachers of the law.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 This is a very important point of today's sermon.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:02 We have only looked at two chapters of Mark,
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 and already we can see a lot of events have happened,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 and people were amazed at what Jesus has said and done.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 As today's passage points out,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 Jesus was drawing a large crowd of people wherever he goes.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:18 In verse 7 to 8 it says,
00:01:18 --> 00:01:33 As Jesus' popularity grew,
00:01:33 --> 00:01:37 we can also see that sentiment of resentment and opposition
00:01:37 --> 00:01:40 is growing among a group of people.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:42 They were the teachers of law,
00:01:43 --> 00:01:44 the religious heathies.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:51 Their resentment most likely started back from Mark 1.22,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 because people were comparing them with Jesus.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 The people were amazed at his teaching,
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 because he taught them as one who had authority,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 not as the teachers of the law.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:10 What Jesus said and done has a direct impact to the teachers of the law,
00:02:11 --> 00:02:17 because his arrival will fill their spiritual condition in their heart.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:22 Jesus is pointing out something that is different to what they have been teaching.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:28 Jesus wants everyone to go deeper to understand their spiritual needs,
00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 because in Matthew it says,
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 Blessed are the poor in spirit,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:34 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 Today, let's go deeper to find out who belongs to the kingdom of heaven,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 who belongs to this new community of the king.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 At the beginning of chapter 2,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 Jesus was setting up a showdown with the religious heathies.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 Steve was reminding us that last week.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 This showdown is necessary
00:02:56 --> 00:02:58 because the teachers of the law
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 were the link between God and his people.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 We can even say that they present themselves
00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 as an earthly representation of God
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 before Jesus came into the scene.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 From the showdown between Jesus,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:16 we can see that they are misrepresenting
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 and giving out wrong information
00:03:17 --> 00:03:20 about who belongs to the kingdom of heaven.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 They were busy concerning about things
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 that weren't that most important.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 When they challenged Jesus about blaspheming,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 showing that they're concerned about
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 whether one is saying the right thing at the right time.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 When they challenged Jesus about fasting,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 showing that they're concerned whether tradition and ritual
00:03:42 --> 00:03:43 have been followed.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:48 When they challenged Jesus about his disciples picking grain,
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 so that they would suppress basic human needs
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 to ensure law has not been broken.
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 Their interpretation of what the law said
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 was far from accurate,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 because when the teachers of the law promoting,
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 what the teachers of the law promoting
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 is you belong to the kingdom of God
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 based on how well you follow the law,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:13 how religious you are,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 as if you can get into heaven by your own efforts.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 What they're promoting is
00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 if you look right from the outside,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 you'll be right with God.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 All of their concerns are superficial.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 Mark, we call it in chapter 12, 38,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:34 it says,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:35 as he taught,
00:04:36 --> 00:04:36 Jesus said,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 watch out for the teachers of the law.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:43 They like to walk around in floating robes
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 and be greeted with respect in the marketplace
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 and have the most important seat in the synagogue
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 and place of honor at banquet.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 If you read how Matthew recorded
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 about the teachers of the law,
00:04:58 --> 00:05:01 you would think that Mark had been very kind to them.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 In Matthew 3,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 while talking about John the Baptist in verse 7,
00:05:07 --> 00:05:07 it said,
00:05:07 --> 00:05:36 They think that they belong to the kingdom of God
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 because they are in the right bloodline.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 They have Abraham as their ancestor.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:48 Jesus had this to say to them in Matthew 23,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 starting in verse 2,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 The teachers of the law and Pharisee
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 sit in Moses' seat,
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 so you must be careful to do everything they tell you,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 but do not do what they do,
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 for they do not practice what they preach.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:06 They tied up heavy,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 cumbersome loads
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 and put them on others' shoulders,
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 but they themselves are not willing
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 to lift a finger to move them.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 Jesus' fall in verse 13,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 lay out some roles.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:19 Woe to you,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 teachers of the law and Pharisee,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 you hypocrites!
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 in people's face.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 You yourself do not enter,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 nor will you let those enter
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 who are trying to.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 On the outside,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 you are pleased to people as righteous,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 but on the inside,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:41 you are full of hypocrites and wickedness.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 Jesus said clearly that
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 because they do not practice what they teach,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 appear to be righteous only on the outside,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 they do not enter the kingdom of heaven.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 They are misrepresenting God
00:06:54 --> 00:06:57 and misrepresenting who belongs to the kingdom of God.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 And the worst misrepresentation
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 is in our passage today,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 in Mark 3.22,
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 when they say that
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 Jesus is possessed by demons
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 and is driving out demons
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 by the prince of demons.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 For their knowledge,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 they should know who Jesus is,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 but they speak against him.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:23 They thought they were speaking against Jesus,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:24 but in fact,
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 they are speaking against God.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 They are speaking against God
00:07:28 --> 00:07:31 because they do not believe who Jesus is,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 which means they do not believe
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 in God who sent Jesus.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 When we are looking at this passage,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 when Mark mentioned about this incident,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 he seems to have interrupted
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 what he was saying
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 in verse 20 to 21.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 If you turn there and have a look,
00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 Mark was talking about Jesus and his family
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 in that two verses,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 but he jumped on to the incident
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 between Jesus and the teachers of the law,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 especially this group of people from Jerusalem,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 between verse 22 and 30.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:09 He then jumped back to Jesus' interaction
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 with his family
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 in verse 31 to 35.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 Mark did this on purpose
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 to show us that there is something similar
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 between the teachers of the law
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 and Jesus' family.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 Let's read again from 22 to 21,
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 and then we go down to 31 to 33
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 to go deeper into this issue.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 Verse 20,
00:08:36 --> 00:08:38 Then Jesus entered a house
00:08:38 --> 00:08:41 and began a crowd gathered
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 so that he and his disciples
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 were not even able to eat.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 When his family heard about this,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 they went to take charge of him,
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 for they said,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 he is out of his mind.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:53 31,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:56 Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 Sending outside,
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 they sent someone in to call him.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 A crowd was sitting around him
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 and they told him,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 your mother and brothers
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 are outside looking for you.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:10 Who are my mothers and my brothers?
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 He asked.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:15 Who are my mothers and my brothers?
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 He asked.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 Such shocking words
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 to have said to your family,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 especially to a Hebrew family
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 that placed so much value
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 in their family tradition.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 Where their sense of worth,
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 their personal value,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 ties tightly
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 with what approval they get
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 from their family.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 With culture,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 their emphasis collective value,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 such as most of Asian
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 and African culture,
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 Greek and Italian
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 and Middle Eastern,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 and sometimes even some Australian
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 when they say,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 your home is a castle.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 You guys know where they're from.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 That shows how old I am.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:59 This is unthinkable
00:09:59 --> 00:10:02 that Jesus gave such a reply.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 I said that Mark
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 had inserted this incident
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 about the teachers of the law
00:10:08 --> 00:10:08 from Jerusalem
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 to indicate
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 there's some similarity
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 between them and the family.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 Family often thinks
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 that they have privileged access
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 to their family member.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 So Jesus' mother and brothers
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 waited outside,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 waiting for people
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 to make way for them
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 to get in.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 The older or senior members
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 often think that
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 they know better
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 and they took on
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 an authoritative position
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 and they will not listen
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 or will not
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 not willing to listen.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 Scenorality,
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 the ranking order
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 determines who have
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 the final say
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 and decide
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 who should be followed
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 or who should lead.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 A lot of emphasis
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 has been put on
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 the outside adherence
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 of family reputation
00:10:59 --> 00:11:03 concerning only
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 the outside appearance.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 It's often very hard
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 to convince family member
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 of anything
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 because they think
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 they know better.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 The most similar thing
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 between the teachers
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 of the law
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 and the family
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 is they both
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 do not believe
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 who Jesus said
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 who he really is.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 Verse 21 said
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 that Jesus' family
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 think he is
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 out of his mind.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 He had gone mad.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 Verse 22 say
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 that the teachers
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 of the law
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 think that Jesus
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 is a bad person
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 and uses demon
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 to achieve
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 his popularity.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 They both have
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 the wrong response
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 to Jesus
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 which means
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 they sat
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 at the outside circle
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 instead of
00:11:48 --> 00:11:48 the inside circle
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 of God.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 after Jesus
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 asked that
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 unthinkable question
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 he provided
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 the answer
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 in verse 34
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 to 35.
