00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 Good morning everyone, it would be great if you could keep your Bibles open there at 1 Thessalonians 4.
00:00:04 --> 00:00:17 ! Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian and a Lutheran pastor who was a very public critic of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:26 He publicly opposed particularly the Nazi euthanasia program and its genocidal persecution of Jews.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:43 He was eventually arrested and he was executed by the Nazi regime in Flossenberg concentration camp in April 1945, three weeks before the end of World War II.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:45 That wasn't a prophecy.
00:00:45 --> 00:01:05 Bonhoeffer particularly, if you read his writings, he was particularly appalled by the shocking capitulation of the German church to Adolf Hitler throughout the 1930s.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 He was appalled by it.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:08 Appalled by it.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:19 How could the church founded by Martin Luther, the great teacher of the gospel, so fundamentally lose sight of the gospel?
00:01:21 --> 00:01:24 That was his bugbear, if you like.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:35 Bonhoeffer saw that there had been this massive distortion of the gospel of grace that Martin Luther taught.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:46 A distortion that basically says, God loves and he forgives everyone, so it really doesn't matter how you live.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:53 God's grace, he saved you by his grace, you are his, and therefore it doesn't matter how you live.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:58 He saw that throughout the Lutheran church in his day.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:01 God forgives.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 That's his job.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 That was the distortion of the gospel of grace that he saw.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:17 And he called it, he was the one who we've attributed to anyway, the term cheap grace.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 Most likely it was his auntie who gave him that idea.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 But we've attributed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:36 Bonhoeffer could see that the German church had lost hold of the brilliant balance of the gospel that Luther himself so persistently expounded.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:45 We are saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ, but not by faith which is alone.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:54 We are saved not by anything that we do, but by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:02:55 --> 00:03:05 Yet, if we have truly understood and believe the gospel, it will bring about transformation of life in what we do and how we live.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 Bonhoeffer wrote,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:18 Only he who believes is obedient, and only he who is obedient believes.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:31 It is anyone who truly has been captivated by God's grace, saved by God's grace, results in a life that is changed by that grace.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 Costly grace changes from the inside out.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:39 It's what we looked at last week, and it's Paul's prayer for the Thessalonian church.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:45 And now it's where he starts landing it in the second bit of one Thessalonian.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 So, jump in there.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 I've got three points today, as I normally do.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:57 So, first of all, first point is living to please God, how to please God, and the pleasure of God.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 So, verse 1,
00:04:00 --> 00:04:13 The word live there is, once again, literally the word to walk.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:24 Paul, again, uses the idea of walking, that is, as a disciple of the Lord Jesus, a follower of the Lord Jesus, walking to describe the Christian life.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:37 That is, it implies a slow, unspectacular, but steady progress hot on the heels of the Lord Jesus, following him in his pattern of life and obedience to his teaching.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:47 Progress, as 1 Thessalonians has already pointed out to us in chapter 1, progress in turning away from a life of sin.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 It's a progress in repentance.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:56 It's a progress in walking and obedience to God as we wait for Jesus to come.
00:04:56 --> 00:05:02 Waiting for Jesus to come is not to sit still, and waiting for Jesus is to make progress in repentance and obedience.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:15 And so, this walking to please God is both the process and the goal and God's plan for your life.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 It's the purpose for which you've been saved.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 So, if you're ever wondering, you know, what is it that God's will for my life?
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 It's right here in verse 3.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:27 It is God's will that you should be sanctified.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:32 That's God's will for every person, that you should be sanctified.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:36 The same word is used in verse 7.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:44 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 That's God's will for you, that you might be holy.
00:05:50 --> 00:06:02 Now, the word holy in the Bible, see, when we hear the word holy, God's word, we think of ethics, moral codes, rules to obey, laws, that kind of stuff.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 But the word holy in the Bible means to be separate.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 It means to be set apart.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:13 And that's why God easily refers to himself as the holy one.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 That is, he is set apart from all that he's created.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 He stands, he's transcendent.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 He stands outside of all that he has made.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:26 That is, God is in his own category.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:34 And when God says, I am holy, he is saying that there is none like me.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 I am set apart.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:44 In the Old Testament book of Leviticus, we read that it is possible for an item to be holy.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 Like Leviticus refers to a holy pot or a holy table.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:50 And it's set apart for exclusive use.
00:06:50 --> 00:07:00 So the question is, or the issue is, if holiness was just about obedience to a moral code, how on earth does a pot or a table pursue a moral code?
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 It doesn't.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:07 So what does it mean when we are called to be holy?
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 What does it mean to be holy?
00:07:08 --> 00:07:17 It means that a pot or a table in the village is set apart for God's exclusive use.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 It's not used for anything else.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:23 It is used for God and the worship of God in the temple.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 It means it belongs to God.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 That's what holiness is.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 It belongs to God.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:38 Holiness, sanctification is belonging to God, not just simply a moral code.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:45 You see, it is in fact possible to be moral out of a sense of duty.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 Or out of a sense of self-validation.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 Or meeting the expectations of others.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 Or just simply pragmatism.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 It's possible to be holy.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:02 In terms of moral.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 It's possible to be moral.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 And yet not belong to God.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 And therefore not to be holy.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:16 Belonging to God is first and foremost a heart issue.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 It's not an activity.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 First and foremost.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 It is a heart issue.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 First and foremost.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:29 Now there are only few people in my life.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 Only a few people in my life.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:38 Where I can say that their claims of love on my life are so great.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 That I actually belong to them.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 Only a few.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:48 There's first of all and most primarily my wife.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:52 I have married her and given my life to her.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 And there's my children.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:59 And there are things that I do now as a person.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:05 And especially as a married man for nearly 27 years.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:09 That I would not do.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:15 If I was not a husband or a father.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:18 It's because of those relationships.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 That I do certain things that I would not normally do.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 For instance.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 I love you church family.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 I'm not trying to make.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 I love you church family.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 But I will.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:32 You will never find me painting your toenails.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 Or your fingernails.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 It just won't happen.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:37 Okay.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 And if it wasn't for the fact.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 That I was my father.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 And specifically father of girls.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 It would never have ended my.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 Vision.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 To do such a thing.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 At all.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 To belong to God.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 Means to.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 Live on his terms.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 This new relationship with him.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 Changes the terms of your life.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 It means that you delight in him.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 You give yourself to him.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:12 You obey him.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 You honor him.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 It's not.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 Simply enough.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 To obey rules.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 To be holy.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 You must belong to him.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 As we have seen.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 Already this morning.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 He is our vision.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:27 He is our vision.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 For anyone to say.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 What is really important.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 Is that I am moral.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 But I don't need God.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 Means that you have morality.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 But you don't have holiness.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 Holiness means belonging to God.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:55 And so the core of holiness.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 Is intensely.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 Relational.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 Intensely relational.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 The opposite of belonging to God.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 Is to in fact.
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 Live.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 For yourself.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 And to reject God.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 To reject the relationship.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 And so the principle of holy living.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 Is not to live for yourself.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 But in fact.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:18 To live.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 For God.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:22 And all that he has called you to.
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 Which brings me to the second point.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 On how to please God.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 In chapter four.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 Paul gives instructions.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 On how to please God.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 And how this is worked out.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 In three.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 Very practical.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 Areas of life.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 Three.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 In fact.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 Major.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 Preoccupations.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 Of.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 Of all people.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:46 Really.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 Sex.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 Work.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 And death.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:52 Now.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 In these three things.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 The early Christian church.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 Were radically different.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 To the people around them.
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 Radically different.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 One of the earliest Christian writings.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 Outside of the Bible.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:11 Contains a very interesting phrase.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 It says of Christians.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:16 We share our table with all.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 But not our bed with all.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 Very profound.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:26 See the Christians existed in a culture.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 And the Thessalonians.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:31 Were these people in the Roman Empire.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 That shared their bed with everyone.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:37 But they did not share their money.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 Or their resources.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 Or their hospitality.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 Or their lives.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 With everyone.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:46 Money was sacred.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 To them.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 And sex was mundane.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:55 Money was something to be held on to.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 Sex was something to be given away.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 Not a lot's really changed.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 In 2000 odd years.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:08 The Christians on the other hand.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 Guarded their sex life.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 But were free and liberal.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 With their hospitality.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 And their resources.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:19 And it was something that was so wholesome.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:21 And so joyous.
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 And so wise.
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 About this early Christian life.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 Because the pagan culture.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 Of the Roman Empire.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:30 In those early centuries.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 They laughed at the Christians.
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 For this.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:36 And yet.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 It totally transformed the Roman Empire.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 Within three centuries.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:48 And so when Paul is urging the Thessalonian church.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:51 When he's commanding them here.
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 Is not to capitulate.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 To their culture.
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 And lose.
00:13:56 --> 00:13:58 Their revolutionary impact.
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 That's what he's calling them to.
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 Now I'm going to say something very briefly.

00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 It's a thing you don't talk about.

00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 Pleasant society.
00:15:37 --> 00:15:39 Does not want to talk about it.
00:15:40 --> 00:15:40 And yet.
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 At the same time.
00:15:41 --> 00:15:43 It calls us to flee.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 Sexual immorality.
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 Like it's the plague.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:52 The Bible never speaks about sex in whispers.
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 Nor does it live it up.
00:15:56 --> 00:15:58 To the point where it becomes the core of your identity.
00:15:58 --> 00:16:01 And self-fulfillment.
00:16:01 --> 00:16:04 Now there are three important principles.
00:16:06 --> 00:16:10 To understand about the Christian biblical view of understanding sex.
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 The goodness of sex.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 The context of sex.
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 And the purpose of sex.
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 I'm going to be real super quick with this.
00:16:15 --> 00:16:18 The goodness of sex is implied here.
00:16:18 --> 00:16:20 These verses don't say.
00:16:20 --> 00:16:22 God's will for you is to be holy.
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 And so don't do it.
00:16:24 --> 00:16:27 Stay away from sex.
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 That's not what it says here.
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 It says.
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 Abstain from immorality.
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 Not abstain from sex.
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 Sex.
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 Properly used.
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 Is good.
00:16:41 --> 00:16:43 And it will function for your holiness.
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 Used incorrectly.
00:16:45 --> 00:16:47 And it will undermine.
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 Your holiness.
00:16:48 --> 00:16:54 It has an incredible power for good.
00:16:55 --> 00:16:58 If used as God instructs.
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 As he's the one who designed it.
00:17:00 --> 00:17:03 Or it is incredible power for destruction.
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 If not.
00:17:08 --> 00:17:10 It would be incalculable.
00:17:10 --> 00:17:12 The lives that have been destroyed.
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 Through sexual immorality.
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 Throughout history.
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 Sex is good.
00:17:19 --> 00:17:21 And the wonderful power of sex.
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 Has to happen.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 Within the context of sex.
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 Back to.
00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 Verses three and four.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:30 You should avoid sexual immorality.
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 But each of you should learn.
00:17:31 --> 00:17:33 To control your own body.
00:17:33 --> 00:17:35 Now the word sexual immorality there.
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 The statement there.
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 It actually translates.

00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 But that's not what it's meaning here.

00:18:09 --> 00:18:09 That's pornea.
00:18:09 --> 00:18:11 It means.
00:18:11 --> 00:18:11 There's all.
00:18:11 --> 00:18:13 Sexual violation.
00:18:14 --> 00:18:14 Outside.
