00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Well, good morning, everyone. Welcome to St Paul's. My name's Steve. I know I met you before. I'm a senior pastor here at St Paul's.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:14 ! Let me just add my welcome to that of Nick, whether you're here in the building or online, but also want to welcome specifically Craig Farmer into our building this morning.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:28 Craig, for those of you who are not aware, Parish Council has engaged Craig to help us as a church family to discern where God is leading us into the next phase of our life and ministry together
00:00:28 --> 00:00:43 as we see Chatswood and beyond to treasure Jesus for their joy. And so Craig is here and he is going to start today with some focus groups that you've been invited into to hear from you.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:55 We want to hear from you about that process. So welcome, Craig, as part of today and thank you for your contribution to our church life beyond this day.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:02 If you are just joined in amongst us as well, as we have just heard from Nick, we are in 1 Thessalonians.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:09 If you've got a Bible, I'd be grateful for you to open it. If you don't, there are versions available around here for you.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 But what I'm going to be saying will be on the screen or in a printout in front of you.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:21 Where we're up to in 1 Thessalonians is the Apostle Paul is now encouraging people, the Thessalonians,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:27 to live lives worthy of God, that is to live lives pleasing God.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:35 And the foundation of that is what he has already said in the first couple of chapters of 1 Thessalonians,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:45 and that is that you, in the gospel of the Lord Jesus, have the pleasure of God already imparted to you,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 which is why you can live to please God, because you've already received the pleasure of God in Jesus.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:57 And so last week, we started that process of what it means to live pleasing to God.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:06 And Paul picked up on, he's really focusing in chapter 4 on three major areas that are a major preoccupation for all of humanity,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:15 and that is sex, work, vocation, if you like, and number three, death.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 And I said, the first two are the ones that you want me to spend more time on.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:20 I'm going to be really brief with those.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 I'm going to focus more time on today.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 And death, the thing you don't want me to talk about.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 So we're going to spend our time talking about death.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:30 Let's pray.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:38 Gracious God, we are thankful for the hope of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ,
00:02:38 --> 00:02:48 that he who died and rose again, that we who believe in him might have his life imparted to us,
00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 so that death has no more sting.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 It has no more mastery over us.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 We pray that this hope would fill our hearts today,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 and it would be a hope that would overflow into this city.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 And we ask it for your glory.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 Amen.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:10 Mark Ashton was a minister in Cambridge in England.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:17 At the age of 62, he was diagnosed with inoperable gallbladder cancer.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:22 He wrote a book about his journey towards Jesus.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:29 Oh, sorry, his journey with Jesus in the final 15 months of his life.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:34 His joy in Jesus, in fact, in those 15 months were profound.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:39 He showed an enormous deal of confidence
00:03:39 --> 00:03:46 and even anticipation of his impending death in those months,
00:03:47 --> 00:03:53 despite a keen recognition of the grief and the sadness
00:03:53 --> 00:03:59 of not just his church family, but his family and friends and so on and so forth.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 A very keen recognition of that grief,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:08 accompanied with a deep sense of joy and contentment at the same time.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 So over those last 15 months of his life,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:16 he talked with virtually everyone he met about his coming death,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:22 with ease, with elegance, and with a great deal of poise.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:27 And this unnerved so many people.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 He found not only...
00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 People found not only his attitude,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:38 but even his presence difficult to take.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:43 For instance, he tells the story in the book,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 one day getting his hair cut.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 And he was asked by the young lady who regularly cut his hair,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 you know, how he was.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 And he replied,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 well, actually, I've only got a few more months to live.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:58 And he said,
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 in that moment,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:04 the ordinary pleasantness of the salon
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 just stopped.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 The friendliness, the chatting just stopped.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 Not just with him,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 but everyone else in the room at the same time.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 And he said,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:20 no matter how much he tried to talk to the hairdresser,
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 not about death,
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 but about anything,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 he could not get another word out of her
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 for the rest of the haircut.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 At all.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 And yet,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 as he said,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 the great irony of it all is,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:35 it's...
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 Death's not something that any of us can avoid
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 in any way.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 It's been said that all the wars,
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 all the plagues
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 have never actually raised the death toll.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 It's still one for one ratio.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:54 Death makes a claim
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 on each and every one of us,
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 and it pursues us relentlessly
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 throughout all of our days.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 And yet,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:05 we,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 this generation,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 this modern generation,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:11 seems to be far less prepared
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 for it
00:06:13 --> 00:06:16 than our ancestors were.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:20 not even able to talk about it
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 in our society.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:23 You see,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:26 we know intellectually and rationally
00:06:26 --> 00:06:29 that we can't beat the statistics.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 But deep down,
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 we sort of repress it.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 And we kind of act day by day
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 as if somehow we can
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 or that we will.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:46 And rather than accept it
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 and prepare for the inevitable,
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 we only avert it.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 We deny it.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 And so,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 in our modern society,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 death has replaced sex
00:06:59 --> 00:07:02 as the unmentionable topic
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 in polite company.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 So,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 three points today.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 They're on the St. Paul's app
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 if you've got that,
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 if you want to take notes along the way.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 But fearing death,
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 death to death,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 and living with death.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:15 So,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 verse 13,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 fear of death.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 Brothers and sisters,
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 we don't want you
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 to be uninformed
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 about those who sleep in death
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 so that you do not grieve
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 like the rest of mankind
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 who have no hope.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 Death,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 as I've said,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 it's that universal problem.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 Everybody struggles with it.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 And there are traditionally two ways
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 that we struggle
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 with the fear of death.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 There's the Stoic way,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 which the Stoic way
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 acknowledges death
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 as something that's terrible,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:57 something that is awful.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 There's a normal reaction
00:07:59 --> 00:08:02 of anger and grief with death.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 death.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 But the way to handle that
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 is to acknowledge it,
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 but then shut it down.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 Shut down the emotions
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 associated with it.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 Even talking to someone recently
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 about their banter
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 with someone about death,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 talked about not going to be here
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 much longer.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 And you can't talk like that.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 You shouldn't talk like that
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 at all.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 The number of times
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 as a pastor,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 I've sat with people
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 who are dying
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 or visiting them in hospital,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 and one of the questions
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 I've always asked is,
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 have you talked about
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 your impending death
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 with your loved ones?
00:08:49 --> 00:08:52 The vast majority say no.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:54 No.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 Don't know how to do that.
00:08:57 --> 00:09:00 That's the stoic way.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 Acknowledge it's awful.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 Suppress it.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 Don't give in to the emotions.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 Be strong.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 Because nothing good
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 will come out of grief.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 That's the assumption
00:09:14 --> 00:09:14 behind it all.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 The more recent approach
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 in our modern world
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 is to handle
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 the inevitability of death,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 particularly in the secular age,
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 is to deny anything
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 about death
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 that is in fact
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 terrible,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 horrible.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:35 So one acknowledges grief
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 and it's awful,
00:09:36 --> 00:09:36 just don't
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 deal with the emotions
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 associated with it,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 don't grieve it.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 Over here
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 is the other one
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 that says
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 there's nothing really
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 that bad about it.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 and this approach
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 sees that death
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 is just simply
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 the natural process
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 of the cycle of life.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 It's just the next,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 it's just the next step.
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 You can go into funeral homes
00:10:00 --> 00:10:00 !
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 And grab the material
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 off their shelf
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 as to how do we
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 understand death?
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 It's just natural.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 It's just the next phase
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 of life.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 It's part of the life cycle
00:10:12 --> 00:10:15 where you will simply
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 slip into a state
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 of non-being.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 It's natural,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 nothing to fear.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 And in your death
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 you help others live
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 by becoming worm food
00:10:27 --> 00:10:30 as Shakespeare said
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 in Hamlet.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 I think,
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 sorry for the Shakespearean people,
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 out there,
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 it sounded impressive
00:10:38 --> 00:10:38 though,
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 didn't it?
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 You just become worm food
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 and so you're helping
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 the flowers grow.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 Secularism says
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 there's no God,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 there's no soul,
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 there's nothing
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 of the supernatural.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 Life is constrained
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 to this early life
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 and so instead
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 of fearing death,
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 which you can't control,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 ensure that the life
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 that you do have,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 you live it
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 to your fullest
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 because there's nothing
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 beyond it.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 So you do whatever
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 it takes to live now.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 Discover whatever it is
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 that gives you meaning,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 purpose,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 and go for it.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 Just don't think about death.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:22 And the problem with that philosophy
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 of life
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 is that everything
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 that you think
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 will give you meaning,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 everything that will give you
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 hope and joy
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 and happiness
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 in this life,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 death takes it all away.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 It removes it all.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 It's all gone.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 Whatever we build
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 our lives on
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 in this short
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 season of life,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 death destroys it all,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 makes a mockery
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 of it all.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 If the greatest joy
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 in your life
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 is relationships,
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 loving relationships,
00:11:57 --> 00:11:57 then death
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 strips you
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 away of all of that.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 Bit by bit,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 death will strip you
00:12:05 --> 00:12:07 of all of your loved ones
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 and eventually
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 will strip your loved ones
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 of you.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:14 It destroys everything
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 meaningful in life.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 The great irony
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 of the secularist
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 who says,
00:12:20 --> 00:12:23 I do not fear death.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 The irony of that statement
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 is that if you really
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 understand what you've just said,
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 you've just said,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 I do not love life.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 I do not love
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 what I have in life
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 right now.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 The other reason
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 we should fear death
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 is because we don't know
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 what happens after death.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 You see,
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 it is an enormous
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 leap of faith
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 to say that we just
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 slip into a
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 non-conscious state.
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 That's an enormous
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 leap of faith.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 No one knows
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 that to be true.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:01 There hasn't been
00:13:01 --> 00:13:03 a culture in history
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 that has approached
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 death
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 so
00:13:06 --> 00:13:10 shallowly
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 and given its people
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 so little tools
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 to handle
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 the inevitability
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 of death
00:13:17 --> 00:13:20 as our modern
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 secular age.
00:13:21 --> 00:13:24 to say death
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 is just natural,
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 is to harden
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 and perhaps
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 even to kill
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 a part
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 of the heart's
00:13:33 --> 00:13:33 hope
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 that makes
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 us human.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 No animal
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 thinks about death.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 death.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:44 We know
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 deep down
00:13:44 --> 00:13:46 that we are
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 not just
00:13:47 --> 00:13:47 trees
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 or grass.
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 We know
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 something
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 deep down
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 that says
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 that we were
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 created to last.
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 We don't
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 ever want
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 to be just
00:13:58 --> 00:13:58 fleeting
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 to be
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 inconsequential.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:05 and the
00:14:05 --> 00:14:05 deepest
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 desire
00:14:06 --> 00:14:06 of our
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 hearts
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 is for
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 a love
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 that
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 actually
00:14:11 --> 00:14:11 lasts.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:15 And
00:14:15 --> 00:14:15 death
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 is not
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 the way
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 it ought
00:14:18 --> 00:14:18 to be.
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 It's
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 abnormal.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 Death
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 is not
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 natural.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 It is not
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 a friend.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:26 It is not
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 right.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 And so
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 Paul says
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 here
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 grieve
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 cry
00:14:31 --> 00:14:34 but with
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 hope.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 And I
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 would say
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 that these
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 verses here
00:14:39 --> 00:14:39 that we have
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 in front of us
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 this morning
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 and the
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 Christian hope
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 that sits
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 in these
00:14:44 --> 00:14:44 verses
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 we have
00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 in the
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 Christian
00:14:47 --> 00:14:47 faith
00:14:47 --> 00:14:49 the resource
00:14:49 --> 00:14:49 that all
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 of humanity
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 needs
00:14:51 --> 00:14:53 to face
00:14:53 --> 00:14:53 death
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 and therefore
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 how to live
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 well.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:57 this is
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 if you
00:14:58 --> 00:14:58 like
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 the
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 greatest
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 contribution
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 that we
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 can make
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 to Chatswood
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 to our
00:15:07 --> 00:15:07 neighbours.
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 Verse 13
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 again
00:15:12 --> 00:15:12 Paul writes
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 so that
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 you do
00:15:14 --> 00:15:14 not
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 grieve
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 like the
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 rest of
00:15:16 --> 00:15:16 mankind
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 who have
00:15:17 --> 00:15:17 no hope.
