00:00:06 --> 00:00:11 ! I think of years gone by. Is this a little loud? Let's turn this down a little bit because
00:00:11 --> 00:00:18 ! I'm only going to get louder. In years gone by, especially when I was growing up, I grew
00:00:18 --> 00:00:24 up in the country and I grew up on a property away from a village which was away from the
00:00:24 --> 00:00:33 big town. And I did feel isolated from the rest of the world. And I loved sport and music,
00:00:34 --> 00:00:39 especially music, but I didn't have a whole lot of access to it apart from the radio and
00:00:39 --> 00:00:46 I heard a lot of music, all different kinds of music from all different eras. And I hated
00:00:46 --> 00:00:52 a lot of it and I loved a lot of it. And one thing that I got told was really great,
00:00:52 --> 00:00:58 was music from the 60s, especially by a band called The Beatles. Anyone ever heard of them?
00:01:00 --> 00:01:06 Okay, Tony just glared at me from the back corner. There are some people who love The Beatles,
00:01:07 --> 00:01:13 like Tony. There are some people who love The Beatles fiercely, but I didn't love it.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:26 And my uncle found out, my uncle Neil, who is someone I love dearly, and grew up knowing
00:01:26 --> 00:01:33 that he was very good to me and was there for me like my dad was, even if he lived in a different
00:01:33 --> 00:01:39 state. And one day he gave me an album. He said, I know you don't like The Beatles, but maybe
00:01:39 --> 00:01:45 you'll like this. And he gave me John Lennon's anthology. John Lennon is one of The Beatles,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:56 and he is the guy who wrote Imagine. Ever heard that song? So, mainly because someone had taken
00:01:56 --> 00:02:03 an interest in me and shared something with me, I think I grew to like John Lennon just as much as
00:02:03 --> 00:02:10 I like The Beatles maybe even more. And I used to love the song Imagine. Imagine is this song that
00:02:10 --> 00:02:23 invites us to imagine the world as one at peace. Lennon thinks that some things have got to end
00:02:23 --> 00:02:31 for peace to come. Things like war or religion. The idea of heaven and hell has to be done away with
00:02:31 --> 00:02:42 completely. The question of what our world needs most is one that we often disagree with. But in
00:02:42 --> 00:02:51 Lennon's time, everyone would have said the world needs peace. If you watch the news,
00:02:51 --> 00:03:02 even if it's only once a month, you might agree. The song Imagine has done well in helping people
00:03:02 --> 00:03:11 consider that we need change. Maybe even consider changing themselves. Maybe even consider pursuing
00:03:11 --> 00:03:19 peace with what they can do and control. But as effective as that song is, the world is far more
00:03:19 --> 00:03:32 effective at creating war. Nations and peoples, marriages, friendships, all trend towards conflict.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:37 This world seems at war with itself. And the older I get,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:48 the more battles I witness against pain, debt, division, and death.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:59 Peace doesn't seem to grow or come nearer. The world only increases in complexity and brokenness.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:08 And the song Imagine is not enough. I listen to it now and I get a sense of bitterness when I listen to it.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:17 Even frustration. Because the peace that it makes us crave when we hear it.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:24 The peace that we long for when we watch the news or experience the hardship of this world.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:31 We can't find it. And as you get older, it's harder and harder to imagine it.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:41 But the peace the world hungers for does exist. Anyone can witness it.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 And all they need to do is go to church.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:53 Where Christians experience the peace that all people long for.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:57 And you might be shocked that I've just said that.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 You might scoff.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:07 But Paul is going to show us in 1 Thessalonians 5,
00:05:07 --> 00:05:13 how our relationships to one another in Christian community display the peace of God
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 by the very power of God.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:23 And we'll be navigating through Paul's encouragements to build up Christians.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 That's where we just left last week's passage.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:31 Encouraging one another and building up one another.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 And Paul is going to bring three encouragements to us.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 In our relationships, in finding peace,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 and fighting the battle for Christian community.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:44 Answering the question,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:50 can Christians together really show peace to their world?
00:05:52 --> 00:05:56 When my wife and I first became part of this church,
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 20 or so years ago,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:06 we noticed that some people referred to each other as uncle and auntie,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 who we knew were not related at all.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 And we thought this was beautiful.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 Because older members of the church,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 or people who journeyed a long time with one another,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:29 had uncle and auntie as this lovely family title of respect and connection.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 And as we've grown up in this church,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 and had children of our own,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:38 we've taught our children to call some of you uncle and auntie.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:41 Because you've helped us raise our children.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 You've helped us grow.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:46 And you continue to encourage us.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 You're family to us.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 Paul starts our passage today,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 calling Thessalonian Christians,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 brothers and sisters.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:03 You may not know me at all.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 My name's Nick.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 I'm one of the pastors here at church.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 You might have only ever seen me online.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 You might have clicked through and met me right now.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 But if you're a Christian,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:15 I'm your brother.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 Isn't that amazing?
00:07:19 --> 00:07:19 Isn't that amazing?
00:07:19 --> 00:07:24 If you're a follower of Jesus,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 we are family.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:32 For being saved by Jesus means we are made family.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 And like no family you've ever known,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 because our Father loves us perfectly.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 And we're in a family for all eternity.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 It's an unbreakable family.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:48 But if we are honest with ourselves,
00:07:48 --> 00:07:52 we rarely treat our church family
00:07:52 --> 00:07:59 at the love level of our household family.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:05 Paul means what he calls us.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:10 We should be experiencing good,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 deep, sibling family relationships
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 as Christian family.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 Look around the room.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:22 Are you committed in love to these people?
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 Your sisters and your brothers.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:31 Or do you tolerate Sundays?
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 Pretending to be at peace.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 Paul has two encouragements for you,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 brothers and sisters.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:44 Each is for us all,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 so that we might live as God's family together
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 to build his community of peace.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:54 Let's have a look at what he's encouraging us family in.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:58 First, is to acknowledge,
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 in verse 12 and verse 13,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 hold in highest regard
00:09:04 --> 00:09:08 a certain group of fellow believers.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:12 Acknowledge can also mean respect or appreciate,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 in verse 13,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:18 literally means esteem them exceedingly.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 So who are these people?
00:09:19 --> 00:09:24 They are those who work hard among you
00:09:24 --> 00:09:29 and those who care for you in the Lord
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 and admonish you.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:36 They are those taking the lead over you as a Christian,
00:09:37 --> 00:09:42 who are laboring over your growth in faith.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 Who are those people to you?
00:09:45 --> 00:09:50 What's interesting is Paul doesn't list any titles
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 for these leaders,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 but only qualities.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 And, he says in verse 12,
00:09:58 --> 00:10:01 such a leader is among you.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:06 Not distant or uncaring or lazy
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 and only sometimes here.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:11 Instead, no, they're family level close
00:10:11 --> 00:10:14 so that they know you
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 and know your needs
00:10:16 --> 00:10:20 and where you need to grow in your faith.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 They are those working hard,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 toiling over you
00:10:24 --> 00:10:28 and literally straining to exhaustion
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 over you
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 as they care and speak truth into your life.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 who comes to mind
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 in your life
00:10:36 --> 00:10:39 who is such a leader to you?
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 It may be a Christian friend,
00:10:44 --> 00:10:44 a parent,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 a group leader,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 or even a pastor
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 at your church.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 Paul does not ask that we ignore
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 or mistreat those people,
00:10:56 --> 00:11:00 nor treat them like princes or popes,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 but to show appreciation
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 and affection to them
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 in keeping with their work
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 to serve and grow us.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 That's the first encouragement.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 And then, in verse 13,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 Paul moves from asking,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 sorry, in verse 14,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 Paul moves from asking,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 in verse 12,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 asking us to respect
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 and love our leaders
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 to urging,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 in verse 14.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 Perhaps he imagined
00:11:31 --> 00:11:33 the church would struggle more
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 with this second encouragement.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 For Paul calls all believers
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 to admonish,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 encourage,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 and help
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 our sisters and brothers
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 who are idle,
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 the disheartened,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 and the weak.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 To know which of those
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 your brother and sister
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 are
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 the idle,
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 the disheartened,
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 or the weak.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 We need to
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 know them.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:04 Imagine
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 discovering
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 your friend,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 your Christian friend,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 is
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 devastated,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 struggling,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 faint of heart,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 and you walk up to them
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 with a strong warning,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 a loud voice,
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 a firm push
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 in a certain direction.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 They may
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 break.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 The American
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 preacher and writer,
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 John Piper,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 says that
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 the admonishing
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 of the idle
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 versus
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 encouraging
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 and helping
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 the faint-hearted
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 and weak
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 is like a line
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 between
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 tough love
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 and tender-hearted
00:12:44 --> 00:12:44 love.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 Both are love,
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 but
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 we need
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 to know
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 each other
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 so we know
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 how
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 to love.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 And then we must learn
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 how to love
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 each of these
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 in particular,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 the idle,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 the disheartened,
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 and weak.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:02 So let's have a look
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 at each group.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 First,
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 who are the idle?
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 Someone not doing
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 something?
00:13:09 --> 00:13:11 The person you ask
00:13:11 --> 00:13:11 to do a favor
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 who doesn't show up?
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 Paul likely means
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 those who are part
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 of this church
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 in Thessalonica
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 that are not
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 participating
00:13:21 --> 00:13:21 in the life
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 of the family
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 in some way.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 Paul's second
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 letter to the
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 Thessalonians,
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 which, spoiler alert,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 we're going to get to
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 in a fortnight.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 We're going to start
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 exploring that
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 second letter.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:34 Paul,
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 in that letter,
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 warns of a threat
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 the idle have begun
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 to pose,
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 the church.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 The idle have
00:13:41 --> 00:13:41 become disruptive
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 and no longer
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 holding to
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 Jesus'
00:13:45 --> 00:13:45 teaching.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 Some scholars
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 say that the idle
00:13:48 --> 00:13:51 likely misread
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 the day of the Lord,
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 which we've heard
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 about in the
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 previous weeks.
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 They've misread it
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 as already come.
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 And so they're
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 no longer working
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 to serve one
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 another or
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 functioning in the
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 life of the church.
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 They're dividing
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 and disheartening
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 those around them.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 So Paul says
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 in that second
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 letter,
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 keep away from
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 that as if the
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 situation gets worse
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 between letter one
00:14:14 --> 00:14:16 and letter two.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 Christians,
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 we are urged
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 to admonish
00:14:19 --> 00:14:21 the idle
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 so that they
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 do not become
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 wayward.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 Admonishing
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 is to me
00:14:29 --> 00:14:31 and maybe
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 to you
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 a strange word.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 Maybe it's not
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 something we
00:14:34 --> 00:14:36 ever really do
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 or know that we do.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 But what I've
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 found that it is,
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 it's a kind of
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 big brotherly
00:14:43 --> 00:14:45 warning against
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 behavior and
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 its consequences,
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 against bad
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 behavior.
00:14:52 --> 00:14:52 And it seeks
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 not to create
00:14:53 --> 00:14:53 an enemy,
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 but to deliver
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 truth closely
00:14:56 --> 00:14:58 as to a friend.
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 Christians,
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 we have the gift
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 of Scripture
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 to open
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 in those moments
00:15:06 --> 00:15:06 with our sister
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 and our brother
00:15:07 --> 00:15:09 in friendship.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 for it's
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 the same
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 word that
00:15:13 --> 00:15:13 we would
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 take to
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 them that
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 the idle
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 have walked
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 away from
00:15:17 --> 00:15:19 or misinterpreted.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 So that should
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 be opened
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 again as we
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 admonish them
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 to call the
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 idle wanderer
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 back to
00:15:26 --> 00:15:26 active
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 participation.
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 Secondly,
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 who are the
00:15:32 --> 00:15:34 disheartened?
00:15:34 --> 00:15:37 disheartened
00:15:37 --> 00:15:39 or faint-hearted,
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 which is in
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 the other
00:15:41 --> 00:15:41 translations,
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 it literally
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 means small
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 souled.
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 Small
00:15:47 --> 00:15:47 souled.
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 Someone
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 struggling to
00:15:51 --> 00:15:53 wrap their
00:15:53 --> 00:15:53 arms around
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 and hold
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 on to
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 the promises
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 of Jesus.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 As if they
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 can only see
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 the situation
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 unfolding right
00:16:03 --> 00:16:03 in front
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 of them
00:16:04 --> 00:16:06 and missing
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 out,
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 maybe even
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 blind in
00:16:09 --> 00:16:09 that moment
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 to the
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 hope beyond
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 their present
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 day that
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 Jesus offers.
00:16:15 --> 00:16:15 Again,
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 John Piper
00:16:16 --> 00:16:16 says,
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 it's like
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 their capacity
00:16:18 --> 00:16:20 to feel the
00:16:20 --> 00:16:20 greatness of
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 God is
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 small.
00:16:24 --> 00:16:24 Their
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 understanding
00:16:25 --> 00:16:27 and embrace
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 of God
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 is narrow.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:33 how might

00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 an
00:16:49 --> 00:16:49 encouragement
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 to the
00:16:50 --> 00:16:50 small of
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 soul.
00:16:53 --> 00:16:53 To know
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 the hope
00:16:54 --> 00:16:54 which God
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 has called
00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 you,
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 the riches
00:16:57 --> 00:16:57 of his
00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 glorious
00:16:58 --> 00:16:58 inheritance,
00:16:58 --> 00:17:00 and his
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 incomparably
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 great power
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 for all
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 who believe.
