00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 If you were to choose a job,

00:01:35 --> 00:01:36 that's kind of meaningless,
00:01:37 --> 00:01:40 repetitive, unrewarding,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:41 but paid lots,
00:01:42 --> 00:01:45 or a job that pays moderately okay,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 but you get a sense of achievement?
00:01:48 --> 00:01:55 There is a yearning, I think,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 in each of us
00:01:57 --> 00:01:58 for meaning,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:00 for achievement.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 For those of us who are a bit older,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 we wrestle with those sort of questions as well too.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:11 As we reflect on our life,
00:02:12 --> 00:02:19 we wonder what it all means.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 Have we wasted our life?
00:02:26 --> 00:02:27 Into this restlessness,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 I think God speaks to us.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 It's not words necessarily
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 that we would immediately think of,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 but the words are something like this.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:38 Come,
00:02:38 --> 00:02:38 come,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:40 follow me.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 Come to me,
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 or you are weary and burdened,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 and I will give you rest.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 God's word for our restlessness
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 is a following.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 It is discipleship.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:01 But significantly,
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 to follow Jesus
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 is to wander.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:09 To be sent out by him
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 into the world.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:12 To be a disciple of Jesus
00:03:12 --> 00:03:18 must be a missionary of Jesus.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 It is impossible
00:03:20 --> 00:03:21 to be one
00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 and not the other.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 And in the context of meaning
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 and legacy
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 and waste,
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 it kind of makes sense.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 I was reflecting this week
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 on the phrase,
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 you know,
00:03:36 --> 00:03:37 you look like a man
00:03:37 --> 00:03:38 on a mission.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 Well,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 what do we mean by that?
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 It means that someone
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 who is not going to stop
00:03:44 --> 00:03:44 for anything,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 someone who's determined
00:03:47 --> 00:03:48 and focused,
00:03:49 --> 00:03:50 someone who's got
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 a clear purpose,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:56 not to be distracted.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 in a wandering
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 that is restless,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:02 purpose,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:04 a clear focus
00:04:04 --> 00:04:05 kind of makes sense.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:07 Discipleship,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 understandably,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 is God's word
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 to us
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 in our
00:04:12 --> 00:04:12 restless,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 aimless
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 wandering.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:18 We're spending
00:04:18 --> 00:04:18 three weeks
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 on mission
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 and evangelism.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 I'm hoping
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 that if you
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 have been wandering
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 aimlessly,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:27 that
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 through the word
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 of God,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 you will find
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 your life's
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 ambition.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:36 If you have started
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 on this journey
00:04:37 --> 00:04:38 with Jesus,
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 a follower
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 of Jesus,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 but you have
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 been distracted,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 then I pray
00:04:45 --> 00:04:45 that
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 your focus
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 would be
00:04:48 --> 00:04:49 clarified.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 And I've
00:04:51 --> 00:04:51 chosen
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 for our
00:04:53 --> 00:04:53 reflection
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 tonight
00:04:54 --> 00:04:57 a mission
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 of the 70
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 in Luke 10.

00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 helpful if you

00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 him to us,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 we might have
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 certainty.

00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 follow unless
00:06:39 --> 00:06:39 you forsake.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:40 It is a
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 forsaking of
00:06:41 --> 00:06:41 everything.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 the security
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 of home,
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 the warmth
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 of a family.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 It is
00:06:49 --> 00:06:49 following Jesus
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 into a
00:06:51 --> 00:06:51 mission,
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 for Jesus
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 himself is
00:06:53 --> 00:06:53 on a
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 mission.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 If you

00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 point in the

00:07:06 --> 00:07:06 Jesus.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 As a
00:07:13 --> 00:07:13 time
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 approach for
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 him to be
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 taken up to
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 heaven, to
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 glory, Jesus
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 resolutely set
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 out for
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 Jerusalem.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 And it
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 follows the
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 discussion on
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 discipleship and
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 mission.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:31 To follow
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 Jesus is to
00:07:33 --> 00:07:33 follow his
00:07:33 --> 00:07:33 mission.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:35 Luke tells us
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 that the son of
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 man, this is in
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 chapter 19, has
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 come to seek and
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 save the lost.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 Well, the
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 mission of the
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 70 is not the
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 first mission that
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 the disciples were
00:07:48 --> 00:07:48 sent on.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 At the beginning of
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 chapter 9, we see
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 that Jesus sent out
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 the 12.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 And now we see
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 that he sent out a
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 team of 70.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 Slightly larger,
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 but by no means
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 large.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 Possibly slightly
00:08:01 --> 00:08:01 larger than our
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 congregation tonight.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 Really quite small,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 if you think of the
00:08:07 --> 00:08:07 context.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 They're being sent
00:08:09 --> 00:08:12 to prepare the
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 crowds to meet
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 Jesus.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 Jesus is on his
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 way to Jerusalem,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 wherever he would
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 pass.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 The disciples were
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 to go to those
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 places to tell
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 them about the
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 coming of Jesus,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 to prepare them
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 for the way of
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 Jesus.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 Earlier on in
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 Luke, we see that
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 John the Baptist
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 was to prepare the
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 coming of Jesus,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 and now the 70
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 is to prepare for
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 his coming.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 Jesus also gives
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 them the content
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 of their mission,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 what they are to
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 do.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 Have a look at
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 verses 9.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 What are the 70
00:08:53 --> 00:08:56 to do on their
00:08:56 --> 00:08:56 mission?
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 They are to
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 proclaim.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 Jesus says in
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 verse 8,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:02 When you enter
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 a town and are
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 welcome,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 eat what is said
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 before you,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:06 heal the sick
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 who are there,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 and tell them,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 the kingdom of
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 God is near you.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:12 Their mission is
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 one of proclamation
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 of the kingdom of
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 God, of the
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 nearness of the
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 kingdom of God.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 Verse 10,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 When you enter
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 a town and are
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 not welcome,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 go into the
00:09:22 --> 00:09:22 streets and say,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 even the dust of
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 your town that
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 sticks to our feet,
00:09:25 --> 00:09:25 we wipe off
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 against.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 Yet be sure of
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 this, the
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 kingdom of God
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 is near.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 Their task is
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 one of proclamation
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 of the nearness
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 of the kingdom.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:37 In other words,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 they are to
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 evangelize.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 That's what
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 evangelism is.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 It is proclaiming
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 the news of
00:09:45 --> 00:09:45 the kingdom.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 I just want to
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 go through very
00:09:49 --> 00:09:51 quickly what they
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 are to expect
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 from Jesus.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 As they go out,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 they are to
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 expect a
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 great harvest.
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 Verse 2,
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 a large crop,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:01 too large for
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 a mere 70,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 team of 70
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 to harvest.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 That is why
00:10:06 --> 00:10:06 they are to
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 pray for more
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 workers.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 But more
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 significantly,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 it is a
00:10:11 --> 00:10:11 harvest.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 It would be
00:10:12 --> 00:10:12 a fruitful
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 harvest.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 It is a
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 plentiful
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 harvest.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 The context
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 is the
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 disciples are
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 to go into
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 Israel on
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 the way to
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 Jerusalem.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 Israel has
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 been waiting
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 waiting for
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 the coming
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 of their
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 king.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 Something that
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 we will be
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 turning our
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 minds to in
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 the prophet of
00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 Malachi a little
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 bit later on.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 They've been
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 waiting for him
00:10:36 --> 00:10:36 to come and
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 save them for
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 400 years.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 Now is the
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 time the king
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 is coming.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 The people
00:10:45 --> 00:10:45 have yearned for
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 him to come and
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 he has now
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 come.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 Fruitfulness,
00:10:49 --> 00:10:49 of course,
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 doesn't mean
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 ease or
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 safety.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 verse 3.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 Jesus says,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 they are
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 going out
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 like lamb
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 among wolves.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 I'm sure I
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 told this
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 story before,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 but I'll
