The Glory of God

00:00:13 --> 00:00:17 More than me being grateful, it's actually crucial that you have your Bibles open.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:25 We want to see God's glory, we want to see God's glory in the face of Christ, and we get that by gazing upon the Word of God.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 So let me pray.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:46 Father God, we have just been warned from John 12 about the unbelief of the Jews who saw the Lord Jesus in all his glory, they saw his miraculous signs, they did it in their presence, and yet, Father, they did not believe.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:59 Their eyes were blind, their hearts were dead, and so Lord, we pray that you would rescue us from such unbelief, from an inability to hear, from an inability to see your glory.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:06 And as we come now, particularly, Father, I ask, Lord, that you would help us to be amazed at who you are.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:16 We ask, Lord, that you would give us that appropriate awe and reverence as we understand who you are.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:30 And if our view of you, Father, is smaller than who you are, Lord, I pray that you would so bless us with insight this day that our lives would be changed.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:37 We pray, Lord, that we might respond as Isaiah did, woe to me, I am ruined.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:41 So bless us with such humility, we ask in Jesus' name.

00:01:42 --> 00:01:52 In the United States, you can buy a Jesus doll, pre-packaged, with a sawn-off shotgun.
00:01:55 --> 00:02:03 That's right, Jesus doll, sawn-off shotgun, buffed up, no shirt, just a pair of tight little shorts, lovely shotgun there.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 Now, if that's a bit butch for you, that's not the image of Jesus you want.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:07 You can buy the huggable Jesus.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:18 He's obviously much softer, and you can push him and squeeze him at certain points, and he says nice things to you, much like some of the teddy bears that we got at home.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 You push him and says, I love you, and all sorts of nice things like that.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 And so you can get the huggable Jesus, which you push, and it'll say nice and cute things which make you feel good.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 It's particularly helpful if you're feeling a little low.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:57 You can't help but think that in much of modern Christianity, we have domesticated God.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:09 You can't help but think that bit by bit, God's majesty has been chipped away with, and now he fits into nice little Christian products which sit on our shelves,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:15 which I pull off the shelf in order to give me a little bit of a boost when I'm feeling a little low.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:24 Jesus has been turned into a social worker who wants to hear from me how I'm feeling more than anything else.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:31 So I want to ask you this morning, what does the glory of Christ mean to you?
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 What does the glory of Christ mean to you?
00:03:40 --> 00:03:45 You see, the big problem is that when you make little of God's majesty and his glory,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 then you make little of your sin and your brokenness.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 The two are connected, intertwined.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 You cannot separate them.
00:03:55 --> 00:04:00 And I believe that this is the reason why much of the Christian church today is dying, dead, or impotent.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:04 So let me suggest to you that revival happens, and let me be frank,
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 I want revival to come to St. Paul's and to my life and to yours.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:16 Revival happens in our lives when we see God majestic in holiness,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 and when we see ourselves as disobedient dust.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:29 Brokenness, repentance, unspeakable joy of forgiveness,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 the taste of the magnificence of God,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 a hunger for his holiness,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:39 to see these things more and to live them more and more.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 That is revival.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 And it comes from seeing God.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 So let's do that now.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 Isaiah chapter 6.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 If you have not got a Bible,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 there should be one in the pews in front of you there somewhere.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 Or shift seats now
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 to be with someone who's got one on their lap.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 And let us gaze at the glory of God.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 Isaiah 6, verse 1.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 In the year that King Uzziah died,
00:05:11 --> 00:05:13 I saw the Lord sit on a throne,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 high and exalted.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:19 And the train of his robe filled the temple.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 Above him were seraphs,
00:05:21 --> 00:05:21 each with six wings.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 With two wings they covered their faces.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 With two they covered their feet.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 And with two they were flying.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 And they were calling to one another,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 holy,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:30 holy,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 holy
00:05:32 --> 00:05:35 is the Lord Almighty.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 The whole earth is full of his glory.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 At the sound of their voices,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 the doorposts and thresholds shook
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 and the temple was filled with smoke.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:53 There are at least seven glimpses of God
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 in those first four verses.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 So let's look at those seven things.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 Firstly, God is alive.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 King Uzziah is dead,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 but God lives on.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 Psalm 90, verse 2.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 Before the mountains were born,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 or you brought forth the earth and the world,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 from everlasting to everlasting,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 you are God.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 God was the living God
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 when this universe banged into existence.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 He was the living God
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 when Socrates drank his poison.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 He was the living God
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 when Captain James Cook
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 first put his boot on Australian soil.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 He was the living God in 1966
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 when Time magazine put out a front cover
00:06:32 --> 00:06:32 which said,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 God is dead.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 And he will be the living God
00:06:36 --> 00:06:39 10 trillion ages from now
00:06:39 --> 00:06:43 when all of our collective puny potshots
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 at him
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 against his reality
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 will have sunk into oblivion
00:06:48 --> 00:06:51 like a pebble in the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 He is alive.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 In the year that King Uzziah died,
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 I saw the Lord.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 There is not a single head of state
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 in all of the world
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 right now
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 who will be ruling in 100 years.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 The turnover in world leadership
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 is 100%.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:18 In a brief 120 years,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 this planet will be populated
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24 by more than 10 billion new people,
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 brand new people,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 and all of us
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 and the current 6.5 to 7 billion of us
00:07:30 --> 00:07:30 at the moment
00:07:30 --> 00:07:33 will have vanished off the face of the earth
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 just like Uzziah.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:38 But not God.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 He never had a beginning
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 and therefore depends on nothing
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 for existence.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 He will never have an end.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 He always has been
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 and he always will be
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 alive.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 Secondly,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 I saw the Lord seated
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 on a throne.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 We see that God here
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 is authoritative.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 It is no mistake
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 that throughout the Bible
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 there is no vision of heaven
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 where you ever catch
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 a glimpse of God
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 ploughing a field,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 cutting the grass,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 shining his shoes,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 filling out reports
00:08:17 --> 00:08:17 or loading a truck.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 Heaven does not require maintenance.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:26 God is never at his wit's end
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 in his heavenly realm.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 He sits.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 And he sits on a throne.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 All is at peace.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 All is in control.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 The throne is his right to rule.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 We do not give God authority
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 over our lives.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 He has it
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 whether we like it or not.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 What utter folly
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 it is to act
00:08:51 --> 00:08:54 as though we had any rights
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 to call God into question
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 or his authority
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 into question.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 Few things,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 I believe,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 are more humbling.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 Few things give us
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 more of a sense
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 than the raw
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 of the raw majesty of God
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 than that he is
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 utterly authoritative.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 After him,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 there is nowhere to run.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 There is no appeal.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 Nowhere else to turn to.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 Thirdly,
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 we see here
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 that God is all-powerful.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 The throne
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 of his authority
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 is not one
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 among many thrones.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 It is high
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 and lifted up.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 I saw the Lord
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 seated on a throne
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 high
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 and
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 exalted.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 That God's throne
00:09:46 --> 00:09:46 is higher
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 than every other throne
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 signifies God's
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 superior power
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 to exercise
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 his authority.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:54 no opposing authority
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 can nullify
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 the decrees
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 of God.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 What he purposes,
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 he accomplishes.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 God says a little later
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 in Isaiah 46,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 I make known
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 the end
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 from the beginning,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 from ancient times,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 what is still
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 yet to come.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 I say,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 my purposes
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 will stand
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 and I will do
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 all that
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 I please.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:21 in Daniel 4.35,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 speaking about God,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 he does
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 as he pleases
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 with the powers
00:10:27 --> 00:10:27 of heaven
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 and
00:10:29 --> 00:10:29 the peoples
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 of the earth.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 To be gripped
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 by the all-powerful
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 sovereignty of God
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 is either
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 marvellous
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 because he's
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 with you
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 or
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 absolutely
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 terrifying
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 because he's
00:10:44 --> 00:10:44 against you.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:48 indifference,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 my friends,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 to his
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 all-encompassing
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 power
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 simply means
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 that you have
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 not seen
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 God.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 The sovereign
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 authority
00:11:06 --> 00:11:06 of the living
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 God
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 is a refuge
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 full of joy
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 and power
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 for those
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 that are his.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 fourthly,
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 we see that
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 God is
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 magnificent,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 he is
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 gorgeous,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 he is
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 glittering,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 he is
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 dazzling.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:18 I saw
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 the Lord
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 sit on a
00:11:20 --> 00:11:20 throne,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 high and
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 exalted
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 and the
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 train of
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 his robe
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 filled the
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 temple.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 Now you
00:11:27 --> 00:11:27 may have
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 sat up
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 all night
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 and watched
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 the wedding
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 of Charles
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 and Diana
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 back in
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 1981

00:32:59 --> 00:33:00 preaching it's not the
00:33:00 --> 00:33:01 number of congregations
00:33:01 --> 00:33:02 it's not how precise
00:33:02 --> 00:33:04 our liturgy it's not
00:33:04 --> 00:33:05 how well people people
00:33:05 --> 00:33:06 speak of us it's not
00:33:06 --> 00:33:07 even how well we speak

00:33:08 --> 00:33:09 not the eloquence of
