Passage: John 18:1-27

00:00:03 --> 00:00:06 Have you been taking advantage of the better weather?
00:00:07 --> 00:00:10 Most people will enjoy the arrival of spring
00:00:10 --> 00:00:13 more daylight and warmer and less dark.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:18 But for many, spring brings on hay fever and runny nose.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:22 The arrival of a certain time can be good news for some
00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 and bad news for a few.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:28 We have come to a similar time in our study
00:00:28 --> 00:00:29 of the Gospel of John.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:33 There are four Gospels in the Bible.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 They are like a biography that accounts for Jesus' life
00:00:37 --> 00:00:41 and works to save God's people from ultimate destruction.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:46 John's Gospel highlights Jesus' power as a son of God,
00:00:46 --> 00:00:49 his divine nature, and at the same time
00:00:49 --> 00:00:51 we feel his human nature.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:54 Jesus is fully human and fully God,
00:00:54 --> 00:00:57 and he made that claim about himself,
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 which no one in the entire human history
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 had ever dared to say the same.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 John uses time markers,
00:01:07 --> 00:01:08 especially annual Jewish festival,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:12 in his Gospel to highlight Jesus' teaching
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 and what he had come to do.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 It also served as a tool to understand
00:01:18 --> 00:01:22 the length of time between the chapters in his Gospel.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:28 Jesus started his public teaching at 8th Passover
00:01:28 --> 00:01:30 back in chapter 2,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:33 and Jewish people gather at Passover
00:01:33 --> 00:01:37 to be reminded of what God did to save them
00:01:37 --> 00:01:40 from slavery under a human king in Egypt.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 It's a time of annual sacrifice
00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 for the forgiveness of their sins.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 By cleaning out the temple at this particular time,
00:01:50 --> 00:01:53 Jesus displayed his seal for God's house
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 and laid judgment on the Jewish leaders
00:01:55 --> 00:01:59 who had allowed worship to deteriorate into comers.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:04 Jesus' words in chapter 2, verse 19,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 said,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:06 Destroy this temple,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:08 and will raise it again in three days.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 Jesus,
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 when answering the Jews' question about his authority,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 prophetically foreshadowed his crucifixion and resurrection.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 A year passed between John chapter 2 to 6
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 when Jesus fed 5 people
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 as the next Passover approach.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:29 It was at this time
00:02:29 --> 00:02:33 that Jesus' verse of seven I Am statements
00:02:33 --> 00:02:35 in John's Gospel was recorded.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:38 Jesus uses this I Am statement
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 to allude to the same self-identification
00:02:40 --> 00:02:43 that God uses in Exodus 3
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 to claim his deity.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 Jesus told us during this time
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 that he will give up his life
00:02:50 --> 00:02:51 for the life of the world.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 The only way to eternal life
00:02:53 --> 00:02:54 is by believing in him.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 In chapter 6, verse 40, he said,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 For my Father's will is that everyone
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 who looks to the Son
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 and believes in him
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 shall have eternal life.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 And Jesus shall lose
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 none of those the Father has given to him.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:13 It's also at this Passover
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 that we are first introduced
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 to the person
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 who betrayed Jesus
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 at the next Passover,
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 Judas,
00:03:20 --> 00:03:21 Simon's,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 and Scarish's sons.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:23 And now,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 we come to the third Passover
00:03:25 --> 00:03:27 in John's Gospel
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 from chapter 11,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 which is also the last Passover
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 of Jesus' human life.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 This time is the hour
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 that he became
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 the one and for all sacrifice
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 that fulfilled God's requirement
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 to allow God's creation
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 to be reconciled
00:03:45 --> 00:03:46 with the Creator.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:49 Today and the following few weeks,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:51 in the next three chapters
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 of the last four chapters
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 of John's Gospel,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:55 time traveled
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 at a much slower pace,
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 while John tells us
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 of the arrest,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 trial,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:03 death,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:04 and resurrection of Jesus
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 to secure our place
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 in heaven,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 our eternal life.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 We read about
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 Jesus' arrest
00:04:12 --> 00:04:13 in the garden
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 and the beginning
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 of his trial
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 in the high priest's courtyard
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 in today's passage
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 in John 18,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 1 to 27.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 So please keep your Bible
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 open at that chapter.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 In both the garden
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 and the courtyard,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 we will look at
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 what Jesus did
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 and refer to one
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 of his disciples.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:36 We see Jesus and Judas
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 in the garden,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 and we see Jesus
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 and Peter
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 in the courtyard,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 and I hope you will see
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 Jesus and yourself
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 at the end of my talk.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 After many references
00:04:48 --> 00:04:50 to my time
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 has not yet come
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 in the first 12 chapters,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 John told us
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 in chapter 3,
00:04:56 --> 00:04:56 verse 1,
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 it was just before
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 the Passover festival,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:00 Jesus knew that
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 the hour had come
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 for him to leave
00:05:03 --> 00:05:03 this world
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 and go to the Father.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 And then,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 in our chapter today
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 in verse 4,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 Jesus knew all that
00:05:10 --> 00:05:11 was going to happen
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 to him,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 went out
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 and faced those
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 who came to arrest him.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 Three times,
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 between verse 5 to 8,
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 Jesus used the phrase,
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 I am he,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:23 to connote
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 he is God.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 Jesus' life's purpose
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 is to make sure
00:05:29 --> 00:05:29 God's word,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 which including
00:05:31 --> 00:05:31 his words,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:32 is fulfilled
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 so that God
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 is glorified.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 John tells us
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 that Jesus lived
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 to fulfill
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 his own words
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 and the Old Testament
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 and any contemporary
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 prophecy
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 in verse 9,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 11, and 14
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 of our passage today.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 In verse 9,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 Jesus said,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 I have not lost
00:05:52 --> 00:05:52 one of those
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 you have gave me,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 is Jesus repeating
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 words from chapter 6
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 that I have highlighted
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 earlier.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:00 He knew
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 who would betray
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 him all along
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 and he said
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 in chapter 17,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:05 verse 12,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 none has been lost
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 except the one
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 doomed to destruction
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 so that scripture
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 will be fulfilled.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 The cup
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 that Jesus referred
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 to in verse 11
00:06:15 --> 00:06:16 is alluded
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 to Isaiah 51,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:19 verse 22.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:21 This is what
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 the sovereign Lord
00:06:22 --> 00:06:22 says,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:23 your God
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 who defends
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 his people.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:26 See,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 I have taken
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 out of your hand
00:06:29 --> 00:06:29 the cup
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 that make you stagger.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 From that cup,
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 the gobbler
00:06:34 --> 00:06:34 of my wrath,
00:06:35 --> 00:06:35 you will never
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 drink again.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 What Jesus
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 is about to fulfill
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 on the cross
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 will remove
00:06:41 --> 00:06:41 the cup
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 of God's wrath
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 from the hands
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 of his believers.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 Jesus knew
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 there's no other
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 way to achieve
00:06:48 --> 00:06:48 that.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 And then
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 in verse 12
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 to 14
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 says the people
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 took Jesus
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 to Caiaphas.
00:06:58 --> 00:06:58 Caiaphas
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 made his prophecy
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 back in John
00:07:01 --> 00:07:01 11,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 49 to 52.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 He did not
00:07:05 --> 00:07:05 say this
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 on his own
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 but as high
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 priest that year
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 he prophesied
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 that Jesus
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 would die
00:07:11 --> 00:07:11 for the Jewish
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 nation
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 and not only
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 for that nation
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 but also
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 for the scattered
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 children of God
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 to bring them
00:07:18 --> 00:07:18 together
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 to make them
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 one.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:21 Jesus
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 substituted
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 our broken
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 tainted
00:07:25 --> 00:07:25 record
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 with his
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 perfect record
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 in his
00:07:29 --> 00:07:29 obedience
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 towards God.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 By our
00:07:32 --> 00:07:32 own merit
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 humans can
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 never be
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 forgiven
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 and reach
00:07:36 --> 00:07:36 God
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 but Jesus
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 made the
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 impossible
00:07:39 --> 00:07:39 possible.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 At no point
00:07:42 --> 00:07:42 did Jesus
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 draw back
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 because he
00:07:44 --> 00:07:44 knew in
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 order to
00:07:45 --> 00:07:45 save us
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 sinners
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 he had to
00:07:47 --> 00:07:47 offer up
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 his life
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 in God's
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 hand.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 Even though
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 he knows
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 God is
00:07:52 --> 00:07:52 trustworthy
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 and will not
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 live in
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 the death
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 he still
00:07:56 --> 00:07:56 needs to
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 learn
00:07:57 --> 00:07:57 to trust
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 that God
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 will resurrect
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 him after
00:08:00 --> 00:08:00 the cross.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 Jesus

00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 knowing he

00:08:13 --> 00:08:13 followers
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 except one
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 who have
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 already been
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 introduced to

00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 who betrayed
