The Discipline of Grace

00:00:00 --> 00:00:09 I was out early on a cold Sunday morning three weeks ago, running down at the National Park.
00:00:10 --> 00:00:12 I was only thinking about one thing.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:13 Why?
00:00:13 --> 00:00:19 Why am I up on such a cold morning going for a run?
00:00:19 --> 00:00:26 Instead of being in bed with my fingers freezing off, that warm shower was beckoning to me.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 But something was disciplining me to endure.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 Discipline is what trains or corrects our behavior.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:44 And the only thing that was disciplining me to go faster and to run was to run faster than my father.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:50 My dad, who is 28 years older than me, has always been faster than me.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:56 And it's driven me to train at the gym, down at the track in the National Park.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 And two weeks ago, I finally beat my father's PB.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 I'm faster than him by seven seconds at the moment.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:13 Now I've got my sights set on something higher, something a little bit more improbable, beating Steve Jeffrey himself.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:14 We'll see if we can get there.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:16 I'm going to need a lot of discipline to get there.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 But we're all disciplined by a variety of things.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 It could be the desire for coffee to get out of bed in the morning.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:30 It could be the desire for money and success to work hard.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:36 But just like my desire to run, it can swing in and out of season.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 One day we might be very motivated to work hard.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 The next day we are motivated by a desire for leisure.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:48 What is it that disciplines us to obey God?
00:01:49 --> 00:01:53 What teaches and corrects our behavior following God?
00:01:54 --> 00:02:04 We want to be good people who are honest and patient and generous, not thieves, not someone who bullies others,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 not someone who destroys other people's character or hurts people.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:14 But what disciplines and corrects us to behave like God?
00:02:15 --> 00:02:22 If you're anything like me, your discipline following God swings, just like my pursuit of running.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:27 Would it be true that some days it can seem great?
00:02:27 --> 00:02:34 You know, you might get up early, you read your Bible, you spend some time meditating and praying with God,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:39 and then you feel all day like everything just clicks.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:43 And pursuing holiness, it just happens.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 You get to share Jesus with someone.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 But then some days it feels like a nightmare.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 You don't sleep well, you wake up late.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 You don't have time for God.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 You don't have time to read the Bible and pray and meditate.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:04 You snap at the kids, you kick the dog, you get angry with people at work,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 and you feel far from God all day.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 We can feel the gap between those two days,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:18 and we can just feel that we need to work harder, motivated by different things.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:23 But the truth of the gospel is that we are saved by God's grace,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 and it is God's grace that continues to train us.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:31 There's a quote from a book called Disciplines of Grace by Jerry Bridges.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 He has this quote,
00:03:33 --> 00:03:39 Our worst days are never so bad that we are beyond the reach of God's grace,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:46 and our best days are never so good that we are beyond the need of God's grace.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 We are never beyond the reach of God's grace.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 Our bad days are never that bad that we're too far from God,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:57 and our good days are never so good that we don't need God's grace.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 And this is the place that we find ourselves in as we start a new series,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 Disciplined by Grace.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:09 And we're going to see that it is within God's grace,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:12 God's unearned, undeserved love for us,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:15 that we are trained and corrected.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:19 But we're also going to look at the things that we substitute in
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 to try and motivate ourselves to obey God.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 So let me pray for us as we come to God's word.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 Heavenly Father, thank you so much that we can be gathered today,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 treasuring you together,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 and that we get to sit around your word.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 God, give us ears to hear,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:41 so we can understand what motivates us to follow you.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:41 Amen.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 Let me read from Ephesians chapter 2.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:45 It says,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 For it is by grace you have been saved,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:48 through faith.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 And this is not from yourselves,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 it is the gift of God.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 Not by works,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 so that no one can boast.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 We are saved by God's grace,
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 his unearned, undeserved love.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 And we don't do anything to be saved.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 As Nick mentioned before,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 he just put his hand up,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 realizing his need.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 But then,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:13 we start to learn what a Christian is supposed to be.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 We read parts of the Bible,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 like Galatians 5,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:19 where we see the fruit of the Spirit is love,
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 And we're supposed to show these things.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 And we go,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 we have these lists that make us forget
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 that we're saved by God's undeserved,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 unearned grace.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 And our behavior becomes a priority.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 We might be measuring ourselves
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 against other Christians
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 to give us a sense of understanding
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 how we're going.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 Oh, I'm sinning less than him.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 I'm better off than her.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 God must be happy with me.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 He must be happy with what I'm doing
00:05:53 --> 00:05:56 because I've pegged myself against someone else.
00:05:56 --> 00:06:00 Our view of ourselves goes from God's view
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 and it changes based on our performance.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 I think it ultimately comes from a good place
00:06:08 --> 00:06:13 where we have a desire to do the right thing.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 People who are Christians want to follow and obey God
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 and to pursue holiness.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:23 But we easily make God's things
00:06:23 --> 00:06:26 things that we can achieve on our own.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 Let's see what should be motivating us
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 to pursue God
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 from Titus chapter 2, verse 11.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 For the grace of God has appeared
00:06:36 --> 00:06:39 that offers salvation to everyone.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 Grace.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 Grace has appeared.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 God's unearned, undeserved love has appeared
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 and his name is Jesus.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 His death and resurrection offers us salvation.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 We can have forgiveness and friendship with God
00:06:51 --> 00:06:54 not because of us
00:06:54 --> 00:06:57 but because salvation is a free gift.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 God doesn't start the work of salvation
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 and then say,
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 off you go.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:03 Good luck.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 Try really hard to follow me, okay?
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 But now you're on your own.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 He still actively works.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:16 Spiritual growth is not our initiative.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 It is God's.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 And he keeps working in us
00:07:20 --> 00:07:23 through his undeserved and unearned grace.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 God is the one who has given us his Holy Spirit
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 so that we can read his word, the Bible,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 and actually listen to it
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 so that we can hear him speak.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 So from Hebrews chapter 12,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 which was read for us,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 it says that the Lord disciplines the one he loves
00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 Endure hardships as discipline
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 because God is treating you as his children.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 For what children are not disciplined by their father?
00:07:53 --> 00:07:58 Discipline is whatever God chooses to use
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 to grow us in godliness.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:04 Like a parent teaching and correcting,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 the difference is a child will grow up.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 A child will grow up and become an adult.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 But we, as God's children,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:17 never arrive fully formed this side of heaven.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 We continue to be God's children
00:08:19 --> 00:08:22 who are in need of teaching and training.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 He has saved us,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:28 but he doesn't want us to stay like we are.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 He wants to change us to fit heaven
00:08:30 --> 00:08:33 and it's a sign that he loves us.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 God's discipline is a positive thing
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 because he loves us.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 And now God has a magnitude of options
00:08:41 --> 00:08:44 to choose how he's going to train and rebuke us.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 He uses his word as we read it
00:08:46 --> 00:08:49 and it's wonderful to see that our kids
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 love reading God's word.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:54 He might be nudging us
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 or pushing us to obey him from his word.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 It could be preaching like this.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 It could be the words of someone
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 in your community group.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 It could be a friend.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 God knows exactly what we need
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 at any given point.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 And our response to God's discipline
00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 should be obedience and trust.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:20 But we don't pursue God.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 We don't pursue holiness
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 and being like God on our own.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:26 We don't do it to remain in God's kingdom
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 once he saves us.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 But God himself teaches us
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 and trains us to obey him.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 It's called sanctification.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:40 Sanctification is being made holy.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 It's God doing his work in us
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 making us like him.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 And it's not that he's changing us
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 because he's angry with us.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:54 He's not upset like a parent might be
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 when they see a child behaving the wrong way
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 and they snap at them.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 His salvation for us
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 and his sanctification
00:10:02 --> 00:10:05 are both works of his grace.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 His unearned and undeserved love.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 God's discipline in our lives
00:10:12 --> 00:10:15 and the desire to pursue God
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 is a gift.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 We can't pursue him on our own
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 and without his help
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 we can do nothing to please him.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 Paul continues in Titus 2, verse 12.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 God's grace teaches us
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 to say no to ungodliness
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 and worldly passions
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 and to live self-controlled,
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 upright and godly lives
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 in this present age.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 Paul says that not only
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 does God's grace save us
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 and bring us into his family,
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 his grace is our teacher.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 It teaches us to say no
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 and it teaches us to say yes.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 No to disregarding God.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 No for ignoring him
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 and taking him for granted.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 And God's grace teaches us
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 to say yes to self-control,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 to uprightness,
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 to godliness.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 Godliness.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 And these three terms,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 godliness,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 uprightness and self-control,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 they reflect how we
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 take care of ourselves,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 how we respond to others
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 and how we respond to God.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:17 God takes us,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 a people who are stuck
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 in darkness,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 the place where we are
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 unable to obey God,
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 stumbling around,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 hurting one another,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 and he offers us salvation.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 He brings us into his
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 marvelous light,
00:11:31 --> 00:11:33 into his kingdom,
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 where we can see who Jesus
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 really is and see who we are.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 But when we change teams,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 when we go from the dominion
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 of darkness to the dominion
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 of light,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 we come over with
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 a lot of old habits.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 We come over with
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 a lot of bad habits,
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 a lot of old ways
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 of doing things.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 There's a really old movie
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 called Pretty Woman.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 Has anybody seen the movie
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 Pretty Woman?
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 The movie came out in 1990,
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 so that's going to date you
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 a little bit.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 In this movie,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 Pretty Woman,
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 there's a high-flying businessman
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 played by Richard Gere,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 and he pulls a woman
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 off the street
00:12:08 --> 00:12:11 to pretend to be his girlfriend.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 It's not a very wholesome movie,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 but it's useful
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 for this illustration.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 They're totally mismatched socially.
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 One is from the top end
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 of society,
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 one is from the very bottom,
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 but he invites her in,
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 he gives her his credit cards,
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 and she goes off shopping,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 and very soon,
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 she looks like the top end
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 of society.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 She's looking like
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 the best of 80s fashion.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 This was only 1990,
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 so the outfits are terrible.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 She looks the part.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 She looks like she should fit in,
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 but she doesn't know
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 how to act the part.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 She still has the bad habits
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 of where she's come from,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 the bottom end of society.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 She doesn't speak the same way.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 She doesn't know how to use
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 the right cutlery
00:12:54 --> 00:12:56 at the fancy dinner table.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 She's gone from the bottom
00:12:58 --> 00:12:58 to the top,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:02 but she still has the bad habits
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 of where she's come from.
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 And there's a process,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:08 and this is the joy of the movie
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 as we see her transformed.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 This kind of thing,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 it's not that different for us.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 God has plucked us
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 from being his enemies,
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 and he has taken us
00:13:19 --> 00:13:22 to the very top of society,
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 God's children.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 But we bring a whole lot
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 of bad habits with us.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 Sinful practices,
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 ways of speech,
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 unhelpful,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 ungodly attitudes.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:37 But God trains us himself.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 And it's not to keep us
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 in the kingdom of God.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 It is because God
00:13:42 --> 00:13:44 has brought us into his family
00:13:44 --> 00:13:46 that he is fitting us
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 to obey
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 and to be part of his family.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 He's showing us
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 what it is like
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 to be in his family.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 And this is a wonderful joy,
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 brothers and sisters,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 that God disciplines us
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 and doesn't leave us
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 with our bad habits
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 that hurt ourselves
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 and hurt other people.
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 The desire to pursue God
00:14:04 --> 00:14:04 and be like him
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 is all his gift.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 And when we remember this,
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 it protects us.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 Knowing the place
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 of God's discipline
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 protects us
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 from setting
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 our own discipline
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 and attempting
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 to follow God
00:14:19 --> 00:14:21 motivated by the wrong thing.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 We're going to see
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 three things
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 that might be
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 motivators for you
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 to obey God.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 Three things
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 that might motivate us
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 and discipline us
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 in the wrong way
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 to obey God.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 The first one is that
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 we can be disciplined
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 by debt.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 1 Corinthians 6.20
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 says that
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 you were bought
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 for a price.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:45 Jesus
00:14:45 --> 00:14:48 has paid a price
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 for us
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 to be brought into heaven.
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 He paid for our sins
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 dying on the cross
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 and this is
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 wonderfully true
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 and we are saved.
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 And because of this
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 we are in debt
00:15:00 --> 00:15:00 to God
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 but God's gift
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 of salvation
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 is our free gift.
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 We can't pay back
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 this gift.
00:15:07 --> 00:15:09 It is a real problem
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 for a Christian
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 or for a person
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 to try and pay back
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 this debt
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 to God
00:15:15 --> 00:15:17 and to be disciplined
00:15:17 --> 00:15:17 by debt.
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 Motivated to perform
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 so well
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 to pay back God
00:15:21 --> 00:15:21 thinking
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 God has done
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 so much for me
00:15:23 --> 00:15:25 I have sinned
00:15:25 --> 00:15:25 so much
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 and yet he has
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 forgiven me
00:15:27 --> 00:15:29 so much
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 by Jesus' blood
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 I owe him so much
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 so do you know what
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 I'm going to obey
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 really hard
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 I'm going to pay
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 him back
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 because I am in
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 so much debt
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 and I am going to be
