The Character of Compassion

00:00:00 --> 00:00:15 Well, good morning, everyone. My name's Steve. I've never met you before. I'm the pastor here at St. Paul's, and it's my privilege to preach my first sermon in Jonah in this series, but to actually wrap up the series for us.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:37 We come to this end of this great story, God's prophet. If you've just joined us, kind of a summary of it, if you like, is that God's prophet Jonah was sent to Nineveh, to the capital city of Assyria, which in Jonah's time were basically the schoolyard bullies.
00:00:37 --> 00:01:02 They picked on everyone, and Assyria was the greatest imperial power in the world at that time. They were known for their brutality, and so God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, preach to them that I'm going to hold them accountable, and that they are to repent of their evil and violence, because I'm going to bring my wrath on them.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:28 And Jonah's message was God was going to send calamity if they didn't turn from their evil. And Nineveh, the city, hears that message from Jonah, responds, they said sorry, they stopped being brutal in the hope that they would be able to appease God, and as a result of that, they are spared.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:52 And so in the meantime, in chapter 4, which we're up to now, Jonah goes to the left of the city, takes up a vantage point to see whether or not the city that he hated so much was actually going to have the wrath of God pour out on him and be destroyed.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:59 So he doesn't just go and preach. He kind of goes to the hill, gets a vantage point, has a look, and to see what's going to happen to Nineveh.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:13 And so he's sitting up there outside the east of the city. He's got his popcorn and his chock top, and he's waiting for the curtain to be drawn on the blockbuster, and for the judgment of God to send upon his enemies.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:26 But God withholds his wrath and his justice on Nineveh. And Jonah is furious. He is furious. That's the beginning of chapter 4.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:41 And so what we're going to do today is pull together the threads of this book and try and land on what is the main point of Jonah.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:53 What's the main lesson? Why was Jonah sent to Nineveh if Nineveh was not going to get held accountable for their evil?

00:03:00 --> 00:03:08 First of all, the compassion of God. These verses are telling us three things about God's compassion.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:18 Firstly, it means, God's compassion means that he has voluntarily attached his heart to our heart.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:31 In verse 6, Jonah is sitting, hoping for judgment to come, and we are told that God provides a shady plant
00:03:31 --> 00:03:38 to grow for the purpose of easing his discomfort.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:44 God provided the plant to ease his discomfort.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:50 In the same way that God provided a great wind in chapter 1,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 God provided a great fish in chapter 2,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:59 and so now he provides a plant.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:05 Verse 6 says, Jonah was very happy about the plant.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:13 I'm not that much into gardening to love plants that much, but he was very happy.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 In fact, the original wording in the Hebrew language is very strong.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 He rejoiced with great rejoicing.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:27 And it's a statement in the Hebrew, a wordplay in the Hebrew,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:32 that is contrasted with Jonah's language in verse 1,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:39 where his response to God withholding his judgment upon Nineveh,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 Jonah in his heart says,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:52 So he looks at what God does with Nineveh, and he says,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 That is not justice.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:54 That's evil.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 But give me a plant.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 Oh, thank you, God.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 This is the greatest thing that's happened to me in the last three chapters.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:12 God's provision of the plant for his comfort brought him so much joy,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 but God's gracious provision for Nineveh brought him so much anger.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 And then the plant died.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 The next day, verse 10, God said to him,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:38 The word that is used for compassion,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:45 Jonah uses the word compassion to describe God in verses 1 and 2 at the beginning.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:51 And the word that is used in the second half of chapter 4,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 the word for compassion is the word concern.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:59 In verses 9 and 10,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:06 Jonah's delight, his anger, his disappointment, his frustration,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:13 and every other emotion that he has here is attached to this plant.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:18 And it's all aspects of concern.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:26 The word concern that is used here is a word to grieve.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:35 And it's a word that means to be deeply moved, to mourn, to grieve over the death
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 of something your heart is attached to,
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 something you love deeply.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 The deeper the love, the greater the grief,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 when it is not there.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 It's a very strong word.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:55 It effectively means that your heart has been broken.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 Your heart has been broken.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 You have lost your great love.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 All of us need many things, if you like.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 We get emotionally attached to things,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:17 especially we have an inordinate love for things
00:07:17 --> 00:07:21 that we think that we need the most in life.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 John talked about this last week.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 Those things that will give us the deepest sense of worth,
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 security, meaning, joy, love in life,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 our hearts become deeply attached to those things.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 Jonah's joy in the plant
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 is like the joy of a person
00:07:42 --> 00:07:47 with all the comforts and the possessions of this world
00:07:47 --> 00:07:52 and thinking all of the comforts and the possessions of this world
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 is the thing that makes them who they are.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:58 Their identity is wrapped up in those things
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 and so they love them so much.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 Things which, just like this plant,
00:08:02 --> 00:08:05 are so fleeting, not secure,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 and it's never enough.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:11 His heart here was attached to this plant
00:08:11 --> 00:08:16 in such a way that what happened to it happened to him.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 And so when the plant died,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 the very next thing he says is,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:20 kill me.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 I am dead too.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:29 Jonah is furious at God
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 for sending a worm to take away
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 what his heart was attached to.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 Ancient philosophers used to say
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 that there were kind of two kinds of loves.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 There was the,
00:08:42 --> 00:08:46 you could do good things
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 and helpful things for people,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 but you didn't actually have to like them
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 or love them in any way.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 It was,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 it's the love
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 which is an act of the will.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 It's a determination.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 It's similar to the statement
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 that I've heard so many times,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 ironically from Christian people,
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 I might have to love that person,
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 but I don't have to like them.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 That's Greek stoicism.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 It's not in the Bible anywhere.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 The ancients used to distinguish
00:09:21 --> 00:09:24 that kind of love
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 as an act of the will
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 with what they called
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 the love of attachment.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:32 This is where your heart
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 is bound
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 to another's.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:38 And the ancients
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 actually thought
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 that it was impossible
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 for a divine being
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 to have a heart attachment
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 to anything
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 that they had created,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 including
00:09:49 --> 00:09:52 mere mortal human beings.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 How is it possible?
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 They think it's illogical
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 for the great divines
00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 in any kind of way
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 to have a sense
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 that they needed
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 to have their heart
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 attached to something
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 which is fundamentally
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 less than them.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 And so that makes
00:10:12 --> 00:10:14 the language of God
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 at the end of Jonah
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 absolutely shocking.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 The whole book
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 ends with a question
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 that is yet
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 another assault
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 on Jonah
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 and his self-righteousness.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 Verse 11,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:31 this is the end.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 Should I not have
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 concern?
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 There's that word again.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 Concern
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 for the great city
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 of Nineveh
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 in which there are
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 more than
00:10:42 --> 00:10:46 120 people
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 who cannot tell
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 their right hand
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 from their left
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 and also
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 animals.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 The God
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 who has
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 made everything,
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 who has
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 everything,
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 who needs
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 nothing,
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 whose joy
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 is complete
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 and dependent
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 upon no one
00:11:06 --> 00:11:06 or anything
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 has chosen
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 voluntarily
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 to attach
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 his heart
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 to humanity.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 Including Nineveh.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 He has
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 voluntarily
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 attached
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 his heart
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 to humanity.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 He is concerned
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 compassion
00:11:29 --> 00:11:29 for Nineveh.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 Yes,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 he is angry
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 at Nineveh
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 and has
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 compassion
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 for Nineveh.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 What happens
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 to Nineveh
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 impacts him.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 It moves
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 him.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 What happens
