00:00:17 --> 00:00:19 And at one point during the celebrations,
00:00:20 --> 00:00:24 Roy suggested that Australia Day should be renamed as Bludger's Day.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:29 And it should, in fact, not be a day of celebration,
00:00:29 --> 00:00:34 but it should be a whole week of just doing nothing, just being a bludger.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:37 And at which point did the crowd, when he said that,
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 just erupted with cheers and applause.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:42 They were obviously thinking it's a great idea.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:45 And then he suggested at that point that, well, you know,
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 the fact is no one wants to work.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 Certainly no one wants to go back to work tomorrow after a day like today.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 And the crowd cheered even more at that point.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 They tapped, in that moment, they tapped into something of the Australian psyche.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:04 The most popular Australian song of all time is Friday On My Mind,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:06 which was released in 1966.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:13 It's been popular since 1966 amongst Australians, released by the Easy Beats.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 It's a song that catches something of our Australian culture.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:18 On Friday...
00:01:18 --> 00:01:20 Sorry, on Monday, I've got Friday On My Mind.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:26 The day I start work, I'm looking forward to the day when I stop work.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 I think about the day when I'm stopping work.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:36 You know, we are known as the land of the long weekend and of strikes and of sickies and false compo claims.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 And you look at television and newspapers and billboards,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 they sell the stage of life that we call retirement as the ultimate freedom.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 That is, in our culture, we aspire to retire.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:53 That's what we aspire to.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:54 It's the ultimate freedom.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 You work in order to accumulate so that you don't have to work.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 A number of years ago, there was a survey in the United Kingdom
00:02:03 --> 00:02:11 which asks why the Australian show Home and Away was so popular in the UK.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:16 And not surprisingly, it wasn't the acting.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:20 Or the plot.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 Three things were mentioned as the top reasons why British people,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:30 millions of British people, tuned into Home and Away every day.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:32 Number one, the sun's always shining.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:34 Popular in England.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 Number two, the beach is always inviting.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 And number three, no one ever appears to be working.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:47 You could say that the dominant mentality in our culture
00:02:47 --> 00:02:51 is that we work in order to live.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 That is, work is a means to an end.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 We work in order to holiday.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 We work in order to have the money for leisure.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 We work in the...
00:03:07 --> 00:03:11 And the series that we're launching into now,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 over the next number of weeks,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 is about putting some purpose back into what we do
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 when we're not gathered in this place.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 It's about lining what we do Monday to Saturday
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 with what we're doing here right now on Sunday.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 And I think this is so essential for us
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 because we are now working harder and harder,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:36 faster and faster for what is seemingly more and more meaningless.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:42 And if we could truly believe that what we do
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 for most of our waking hours
00:03:44 --> 00:03:49 is actually part of God's good and eternal purposes,
00:03:49 --> 00:03:54 I think it would be a tonic more invigorating than a couple of these.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 Or a...
00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 No, I agree, Sam.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 Or a triple shot espresso.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 Or whatever it is that you use for your tonic.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 We may even result in this, I think,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 waking up on Monday morning
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 and instead of thinking of Friday,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 might actually conclude,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 thank God it's Monday,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 ready for another week of serving him.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 And so my task tonight is to connect
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 what we do with the rest of our weeks,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 what I'm calling through this series,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 and you've seen up there on the screen,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 your front line with God's purposes.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 That is, I want to give us a different view of our working life
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 to the standard view which is in our culture.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:39 And the rest of this series will be unpacked,
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 beyond this one,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:44 be unpacked in how we might see God honoured
00:04:44 --> 00:04:48 in the rest of our week outside of this building.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 Now, I should first of all explain what I mean by work.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 Otherwise, the retired, the unemployed,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 the art students, the parents,
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 the care...
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 I will rebuke myself later for that comment.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 I want you to know that.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 The children amongst us,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 we'll just switch off for the next few weeks.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:14 The biblical idea of work has its meaning in the word vocation.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 One of the major differences
00:05:16 --> 00:05:19 between what you might call a job or a vocation
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 is that someone calls you into a vocation.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 The word vocation simply means calling.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 And so I'm thinking of vocation
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 when I talk about work.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 And understood in the correct way,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 Christian vocation is centred on the sovereign God
00:05:38 --> 00:05:43 who calls us to embrace the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 and to follow him in the power of the Holy Spirit.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:52 And so our first and primary calling is to Christ.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 That is, we are called to someone rather than something
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 or somewhere.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 But under our calling to Christ,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 we all have secondary callings in life.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:11 And it's where we live out our primary calling to Christ,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:15 where we live it out with faithfulness and fruitfulness
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 to the God who's called us.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 And even though it's a secondary calling,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 it must not be minimized or devalued.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:28 What makes the secondary calling significant
00:06:28 --> 00:06:34 is the God is the one who calls us to it
00:06:34 --> 00:06:39 in a life of service and contribution to him and to society.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:43 And so first and foremost, work, vocation,
00:06:44 --> 00:06:49 is not about economic exchange or financial remuneration
00:06:49 --> 00:06:52 or personal significance or career paths
00:06:52 --> 00:06:57 or the thing that I must do in order to have holidays
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 and long service leave and everything else.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 Work is about God honoring creativity
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 and contribution to others.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:11 Our work or vocation, our calling, our position in life,
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 whatever it is, whether we are paid for it
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 or whether we are not,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:19 is our specific human contribution
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 to God's ongoing creation
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 and to the common good of society.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 And that's what this series is all about
00:07:25 --> 00:07:30 and how we are to be faithful and fruitful
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 and God honoring in your vocation,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 whether you are retired,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 whether you're a student,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 whether you're a child,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 whether you're unemployed,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 whether you're a banker,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 whether you're an electrician,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 whatever it is that you are,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 whatever position you are in life.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 What that means is
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 that there's not a person in this room who doesn't work.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 That's what I mean.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 And I'll be referring to that work or that vocation
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 as your front line throughout this series.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:04 It's the place where you spend the majority of your time
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 outside of this building.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 It is where you're in contact with God's world,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 society and the people who need Jesus.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:11 That's your front line.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 So let's jump into the Bible.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 Genesis chapter one.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 Just read out to us a moment ago.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:18 Grab a Bible.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 It would be fantastic if you had that in front of you.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 It's noteworthy,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 as Sam has just read out for us,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 that the Bible begins talking about work
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 as soon as it begins talking about anything.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:32 That is how important and basic it is.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:36 Genesis describes God's creation of the world as work.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:41 And then it shows us human beings working in paradise.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 It is remarkable that at the end of Genesis one,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 God not only works,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 but that he finds delight in his work.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 Verse 31,
00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 God saw all that he made
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 and it was very good.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:01 God finds what he has worked for,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 what he has done,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 as beautiful.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:07 Like all and good, satisfying work,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 the worker sees themselves in it.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 Genesis two goes on to show
00:09:12 --> 00:09:15 that God works not only to create,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:18 but also to care for his creation.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 God creates human beings
00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 and then he works for them as their provider.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:26 He forms the man in verse seven,
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 plants a garden for him
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 and he waters it in verses six and eight
00:09:31 --> 00:09:34 and fashions a wife for him,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:37 a helper for him in verses 21 and 22.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 And the rest of the Bible tells us
00:09:40 --> 00:09:43 that God continues to work as provider.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 He is caring for his world,
00:09:45 --> 00:09:49 watering it and cultivating the ground in Psalm 104.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 He gives food to all he has made,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 giving help to all who suffer
00:09:54 --> 00:09:57 and caring for the needs of every living thing
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 in Psalm 145.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 Not only does God work, however,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:06 but that he commissions his people,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:10 his workers to carry on his work.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:15 So in Genesis chapter one, verse 28,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 he tells human beings to fill the earth
00:10:18 --> 00:10:22 and subdue it to rule over it.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 The word subdue there indicates
00:10:26 --> 00:10:29 that though all God had made was good,
00:10:30 --> 00:10:33 there was still a great degree of it
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 which was undeveloped.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 God left creation with a deep,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 untapped potential, if you like,
00:10:41 --> 00:10:44 for cultivation, development,
00:10:44 --> 00:10:47 for society that people were to unlock
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 through their work of exercising rule
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 over the created order
00:10:51 --> 00:10:54 under God as his image bearers.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 And then you see in Genesis chapter two,
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 verse 15, that he puts Adam and Eve
00:11:00 --> 00:11:03 in the garden to work it and keep it.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:08 And so while God works for us as our provider,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:12 we also work for him doing his work.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 He works through us.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 So the book of Genesis leaves us
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 with a striking truth.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 Work was part of paradise.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 God's good plan and creation
00:11:30 --> 00:11:34 always included human beings
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 living in a constant cycle of work,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:40 rest, work, rest, work, rest.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 It was part of God's perfect design
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 for human life.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 We were made in God's image
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 and part of his glory and happiness
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 is that he works.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 And the Lord Jesus Christ,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 who is the perfect image of God,
00:11:56 --> 00:11:59 says this of himself in John 5,
00:11:59 --> 00:12:02 my father is always at his work
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 to this very day
00:12:03 --> 00:12:06 and I too am working.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:09 So the Lord Jesus did the work
00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 his father assigned him to do
00:12:11 --> 00:12:14 and he calls us as his disciples
00:12:14 --> 00:12:17 and ourselves as image bearers of God
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 into God's work in his world.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 It's startling to think
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 that God made work part of paradise.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 Work wasn't introduced
00:12:27 --> 00:12:30 as part of the brokenness
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 and curse of sin.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:36 Work is part of the blessedness
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 of the Garden of Eden.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 And so work is much
00:12:42 --> 00:12:45 a basic human need
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 as food and beauty
00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 and rest and friendship
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 and prayer and sexuality.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 It is not simply medicine.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 It is in fact food for the soul.
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 According to the Bible,
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 we don't merely need the money
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 from work to survive,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 we need the work itself
00:13:04 --> 00:13:07 to survive and thrive.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 Rather than working to live,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 we live to work.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:19 That is,
00:13:19 --> 00:13:23 I have four weeks annual leave
00:13:23 --> 00:13:25 in order to be refreshed
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 to work the rest of the year.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 That's the purpose of my leave.
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 I don't work in order
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 to accumulate annual leave.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 I get annual leave
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 in order to work.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 That's a complete flip
00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 of the culture in which we exist.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:45 But that's a biblical view.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 So rather than working to live,
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 we live to work.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 And I think the Apostle Paul
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 makes that point
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 in 2 Thessalonians 3,
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 verse 10,
00:13:57 --> 00:13:57 where he says,
00:13:57 --> 00:14:00 if anyone is not willing to work,
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 let him not eat.
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 Now, Paul doesn't rebuke
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 those there that cannot work
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 for any reason,
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 but he does say
00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 an unwillingness to work
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 is no trivial matter.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:16 For anyone to refuse to work
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 is a fundamental violation
00:14:17 --> 00:14:19 of God's design for humanity.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:23 But the Bible also keeps us
00:14:23 --> 00:14:25 from falling into the opposite mistake,
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 and that is making work
00:14:27 --> 00:14:30 the only important human activity
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 or the badge of honour.
00:14:32 --> 00:14:34 So when we say,
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 you know,
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 I work long hours
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 and I work all the time
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 and I haven't had a day off
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 for weeks or something like that,
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 that's sin.
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 That's making an idol of your work.
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 That's not part of God's good design.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:51 You see, work is not all there is to life.
00:14:52 --> 00:14:54 You will not have a meaningful life
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 without work,
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 but you cannot say
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 that your work
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 is the meaning of your life.
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 If you make any work
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 the purpose of your life,
00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 including church work and ministry,
00:15:03 --> 00:15:05 you create an idol
00:15:05 --> 00:15:07 that rivals God.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:10 So first of all,
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 it's a real tonic to know
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 that it's not just
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 your service in the church
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 that matters to God.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 That's the first thing.
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 Your vocation,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 your position in life
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 matters to God.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 And as I mentioned before,
00:15:21 --> 00:15:23 I get that from 1 Corinthians 7,
00:15:23 --> 00:15:25 where God assigns people
00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 their position in life.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 Your front line
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 is where God has put you
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 to fulfil his purpose
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 for his world.
00:15:33 --> 00:15:35 It's a further tonic
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 to know that God
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 is in fact still at work
00:15:38 --> 00:15:40 in his world himself.
00:15:41 --> 00:15:43 So in Colossians chapter 1,
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 which Sam read out to us,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 Paul is allowing
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 the Colossian church
00:15:48 --> 00:15:51 to in on his prayer life.
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 And his prayers
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 are prayers of thanksgiving
00:15:54 --> 00:15:57 as he reflects on the fact
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 that the gospel
00:15:58 --> 00:16:00 is bearing fruit
00:16:00 --> 00:16:02 all over the world.
00:16:02 --> 00:16:04 It is transforming situations
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 in verse 6.
00:16:05 --> 00:16:07 And so when Paul moves
00:16:07 --> 00:16:10 to pray for the Colossians,
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 what does he think
00:16:11 --> 00:16:13 their greatest need is?
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 And bear this in mind
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 as we enter into a week
00:16:15 --> 00:16:17 of prayer here at St. Paul's
00:16:17 --> 00:16:19 in terms of how to shape
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 your prayer life in this week.
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 What are your prayer priorities?
00:16:24 --> 00:16:24 What does he think
00:16:24 --> 00:16:26 the Colossians need
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 more than anything else?
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 What shapes his prayer for them?
00:16:30 --> 00:16:32 It is that they be filled
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 with the knowledge
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 of God's will.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 In verse 9,
00:16:36 --> 00:16:38 so that they will live lives
00:16:38 --> 00:16:40 that are worthy of the Lord
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 and that they will bear fruit
00:16:43 --> 00:16:45 in every good work.
00:16:47 --> 00:16:49 Growing in the knowledge of God
00:16:49 --> 00:16:51 and strengthened to keep going
00:16:51 --> 00:16:53 in their lives of faith.
00:16:53 --> 00:16:55 That's what he desires
00:16:55 --> 00:16:58 for the Colossian church.
00:16:58 --> 00:17:01 He then moves in to talk about
00:17:01 --> 00:17:03 the significance of what Christ
00:17:03 --> 00:17:03 has done
00:17:03 --> 00:17:06 and then he just puts on display
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 from verse 14
00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 at just a litany
00:17:09 --> 00:17:11 of amazing truths
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 about Jesus Christ
00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 that are probably the most
00:17:13 --> 00:17:15 concentrated descriptions
00:17:15 --> 00:17:18 of the glories of Jesus
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 in all of the New Testament.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 Have a look at it there.
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 There's 15 of them
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 in a few verses.
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 Verse 14,
00:17:25 --> 00:17:27 in him we have redemption,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 the forgiveness of sins.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 Verse 15,
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 he is the image
