00:00:05 --> 00:00:10 And on that night, you, because you're cool, would probably be doing all sorts of things.
00:00:10 --> 00:00:12 If you're anything like me, you might have been asleep.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:18 Because that's what I like to do on New Year's Eve, because my kids get up at 6.30 no matter what day of the year it is.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:20 And so I need my beauty sleep.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:27 But assuming your life isn't as tragically boring as mine, you might have been at something exciting like a New Year's party.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:36 And at a New Year's party, it's an interesting kind of thing, because you start those parties by finishing off the year.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 And you finish off those parties by starting the year.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 And it's kind of like, what is the New Year's party about?
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 Is it actually about the year that's gone past?
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 Or is it about the year that's coming?
00:00:48 --> 00:00:52 And I guess that kind of depends on the year you've had or the year you're looking forward to.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:55 But most of the time, it's a transitional moment in your life.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:01 You kind of go from one to the other and you're kind of like, hey, it started 2015 and now it's 2016.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:07 And the text we're looking at today is a transition point in the book of Romans.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:09 Romans chapter 5.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 And it's a chapter that both looks back and looks forward.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:20 And it looks back because it nicely rounds off a bunch of themes that have been going on in Romans throughout chapters 1 to 4.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:26 In those chapters, Paul has been outlining for us how God brings sinners back to himself.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:35 But Romans also looks forward in chapter 5 because it prepares us for what happens in chapters 6 to 8.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 And in chapters 6 to 8, it's all about how to live life once you've come to Christ.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 Because here's the beautiful thing about Jesus.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:49 Jesus didn't just come to fix up your mess and wipe your slate clean.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 He came to do that and to give you new life in order to live for him.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 And so my sermon today is going to try and do both of those things.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:10 It's going to try and show you the glory of Jesus by demonstrating how he deals with your past, how he secures your future, but also how he transforms your present.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 So let's start with our past by looking backwards.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 Take a look with me at verse 1 of chapter 5.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 Now, what does Paul mean by this word justified here?
00:02:26 --> 00:02:34 In the simplest terms possible, it means that God has declared us to be not guilty before him.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:45 See, the wonder of justification is that the future verdict you might fear has already been given in the present.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:54 If you are in Christ, there is now no longer any condemnation, both now and into the future.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 You have been justified.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:00 It is a settled fact in Christ.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:05 And that verdict will not change because Christ will not change.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 And what he's done on the cross and through the resurrection will not change.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:14 If you are in Christ, the verdict on your acceptance has already been given.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:21 No matter what you've done, no matter what you've become, Christ can make you right with God.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:30 And everything that Paul will say from this point onwards about the Christian life assumes you already know that fact.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 It assumes you know that you're already justified.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:40 Because if you don't start there and you start thinking about how to live the Christian life,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:46 but you're unsure that you are a Christian, you're going to end up in all sorts of wrong places.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:51 And friends, I need to ask you before we kind of embark on the journey, do you live with that assumption?
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 Do you live with the assumption?
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 It's easy enough to say or sing the words, I have been forgiven.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 Christ loves me.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 I've been justified.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 But our actions and our attitudes so often tell a different story.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:13 Do the anxieties of your spiritual life, and I get it, we've all got anxieties in our spiritual life,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:19 but do your anxieties say that you're worried what God's verdict will be in the future?
00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 Are you a hard worker in this church?
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 And every church has them.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 People who basically make the place run.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:34 Are you a hard worker partly because you're not actually sure whether God has really accepted you?
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 And you're trying to work your way back.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:45 The text says, since we've been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:50 But note also that Paul uses other metaphors to describe salvation.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 To describe what Christ has accomplished for us.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:58 So in verses 10 and 11, Paul talks about being reconciled to God.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:04 So justification is, if you like, a metaphor from the law court.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:09 It's, whereas reconciliation is a relational metaphor.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:16 Now one of the dangers for the metaphors we use to describe salvation is if you just focus on one,
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 you can actually end up distorting the gospel.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 You can reduce it.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:27 So if you only ever talk about justification, that means you tend to see God only as your judge,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 whose job is either to declare us guilty or not guilty.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:37 Which is true enough, but a judge is not necessarily someone you have a relationship with.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 I don't know how many times you've been to court.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:44 But like, when you go to court and the judge kind of goes, not guilty.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:49 It's not like after that you sit there and great, we should have coffee sometime.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 Like you don't, you don't hang out with your judge.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 His job is just to basically say you're either in or you're out.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 And that's why we need metaphors like reconciliation.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 Because God is not merely our judge, he's our father.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:07 And he wants you as his child.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:12 You are estranged from God by your sin, but he has brought you back.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 And as Tim Keller says, God doesn't want to be a concept, he wants to be a friend.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:22 And so we need all the metaphors of the good news that we can find,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:26 because without all the metaphors, you don't see the full richness of the gospel.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 I remember once being in Rome.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 I've only ever been to Rome once.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 That makes it sound like I go all the time.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 I remember the one time I was in Rome.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:41 And all you do in Rome, as far as I'm concerned, is you go and see old monuments and eat gelato.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 That's basically all you need to do in Rome.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 That's enough.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 And I went to a gelato store, and I'll never forget it.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:52 because I went into a gelato store that had 130 flavours of gelato.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 It had 11 different types of chocolate.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 I wanted to die and live there forever.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:03 And I tried to eat as many different types of gelato from that store,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 but I couldn't manage to get around to all 130 flavours.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:11 But I left thinking I've not experienced the full glory of this store,
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 until I've had 100.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 129 won't do.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:21 In a little way, that's kind of like what it is to hold all the metaphors of Scripture about salvation.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:26 Because Jesus doesn't just bring justification.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 He brings reconciliation.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 At other points, it talks about that he brings liberation.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 All of those things are true, and we need to hear all of them.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:41 So the foundation stone of Romans 5 is that your past has been forgiven,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 and you are at peace with God.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 Whether you feel like that right now,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:51 it is objectively true that in Christ you have peace with God.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 And so having dealt with our past,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 towards the end of verse 2,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 Paul starts looking forward.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 He says,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:05 Through Christ, we now rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 It's one of those phrases,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 I don't know if you've ever heard it,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 but I don't know if you ever do this in Bible study group.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 It's one of those phrases that people used to say to me,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 and it was a nod and smile moment,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 which is where you don't have any idea what people are saying,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 but you know you're meant to know,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 and say, oh yes, amen.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 We rejoice in the hope of the glory.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 That's fantastic.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 I have no idea what you're saying.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 And let's be honest,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 we sometimes do that in the Christian church.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 I didn't actually know what that meant.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 Because it's got all the right terms to be a Christian quote, doesn't it?
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 It's got God, glory, hope, rejoicing.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 Who doesn't want that for a poster?
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 Facebook status, ready to go.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 But what does it actually mean?
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 Well, on the one hand,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 many people would interpret it,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 and they'd be fair enough in doing so,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:57 as being the hope that we have for seeing God's glory at the end of time.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 The hope that we have of being in his presence for eternity.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 And that is a perfectly reasonable idea,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:07 and perhaps is what is going on here.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:10 But I think something else might be going on here,
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 because a little earlier in Romans,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 Paul referred to the glory of God,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:18 and he made this point in chapter 3.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 He said,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:24 all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:28 That's his statement about human beings in Romans chapter 3.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 Now, what's he meaning there?
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 Well, in Psalm 8 verse 5,
00:09:32 --> 00:09:36 it says that human beings have been crowned with glory and honour.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:40 And we're crowned with glory because we're made in the image of God,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 made to know him and to show him,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:46 made to be his representatives as we cultivate his creation.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 And so we're called to this glorious task of imaging God
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 and reflecting his goodness to the world.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 And the fundamental fact about human beings
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 is that we've all failed at that task.
00:09:57 --> 00:10:02 We've all failed to live up to be the people that we were created to be.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:06 We've all failed to live up to the glory for which we were intended.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 And so what I think Romans 5, 2 might well be saying
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 is that through Christ,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:15 God is going to restore us to the glory for which we were designed.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 Not as our own achievement, but as Christ's achievement.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:22 On that final day, you will not only be forgiven,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:28 you will be everything that God intended you to be from the very beginning.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 Because what Paul is saying in verse 2
00:10:31 --> 00:10:35 is that we rejoice in the hope that we will be fully conformed
00:10:35 --> 00:10:39 to the image we were meant to have from the start.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 A little later in Romans 8, 18, Paul says,
00:10:43 --> 00:10:47 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 with the glory that will be revealed in us.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:54 But note carefully, this glory is something that I don't have yet.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 It's a hope.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 It's a sure and certain hope,
00:10:58 --> 00:11:01 but we don't yet have at least not in full measure.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 And that highlights for us a persistent tension
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 that underlies so much of the New Testament,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 which is that throughout the New Testament,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 you have this constant tension between
00:11:12 --> 00:11:16 we are already experiencing salvation now,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:20 and yet we're still awaiting the completion of salvation
00:11:20 --> 00:11:23 at the end of time.
00:11:23 --> 00:11:26 We live between the two comings of Christ.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:30 The first coming of Christ achieves and secures our salvation,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 but it's only at the second coming
00:11:32 --> 00:11:35 that you get the full benefit of the blessings.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:39 And so the Christian always has to look at their life
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 as a mixture of the two,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 of the now and the not yet.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:47 So now we are already justified.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:50 Now we are already reconciled.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 But at the same time,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 there are things we are waiting for.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:57 And the tension between the now and the not yet
00:11:57 --> 00:12:00 helps explain what might look initially weird to us
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 in verses 9 and 10.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 I don't know if you saw that language in verses 9 and 10.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:05 It says in verse 9,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 having been justified,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 how much more will we be saved?
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 Verse 10,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:14 having been reconciled,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 how much more will we be saved?
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 And when you first read that,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 you're probably thinking,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 aren't they the same thing?
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 Like if I'm justified,
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 aren't I already saved?
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 If I'm reconciled,
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 aren't I already saved?
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 Was I lying before
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 when I said that God's final verdict
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 has been given already in the present?
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 Was that just a kind of, you know,
00:12:33 --> 00:12:36 a fake move to get on your side to begin with?
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 No, Paul is not getting you
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 to question your salvation.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 What Paul is trying to tell you is
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 there is a sense in which
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 you have not yet been saved.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 Because this morning when I checked,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 I still didn't have a resurrection body.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 To be quite honest,
00:12:53 --> 00:12:53 when I looked in the mirror,
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 it looked more like a body of death.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 There's a lagging indicator.
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 It's called my body.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 And last time I asked my wife,
00:13:01 --> 00:13:03 she confirmed to me,
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 Mark, your life still falls short
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 of the glory of God.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 She's good at letting me know
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 that my life falls short
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 of the glory of God.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 It always,
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 as in my body,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 my holiness,
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 there's so much of my life
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 that doesn't yet have
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 the touch of God's salvation on it.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:21 It will be touched one day.
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 I will be raised
00:13:23 --> 00:13:25 with a body like his.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:28 I will eventually be perfected in Christ.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:30 But there are some things
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 that are not yet.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 And this is why the New Testament
00:13:32 --> 00:13:35 refers to salvation sometimes
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 as a future possession.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 Not to get you to question
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 whether you're saved or not,
00:13:41 --> 00:13:43 but to get you to understand
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 you don't yet have it all.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 You are an heir of salvation,
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 but you haven't yet received
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 all the inheritance.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 And so far from trying
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 to make us discouraged,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 Paul is actually trying
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 to encourage us here,
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 because what he is saying
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 in Romans 5, 1 to 11
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 is that God who began
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 a good work in you
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 is going to carry it to completion.
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 The God who has started with you
00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 is going to finish with you.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:13 If you have been justified,
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 you will be saved.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 God is going to get you home
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 because the problem is
00:14:18 --> 00:14:20 we can get discouraged
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 living between the first
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 and second coming of Christ
00:14:22 --> 00:14:25 because what if something happens?
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 What if something happens
00:14:27 --> 00:14:30 between when I profess faith
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 in Christ and the day of the Lord?
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 One of the things
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 that really shakes us up
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 is suffering.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 We really get ruined
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 sometimes by suffering
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 and Paul zeroes in on suffering
00:14:43 --> 00:14:45 for us in verses 3 to 5
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 and teaches us to see our suffering
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 in a different perspective.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 He says,
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 not only so,
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 but we also rejoice
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 in our sufferings
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 because we know that suffering
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 produces perseverance,
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 perseverance character,
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 and character hope.
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 And hope does not disappoint us
00:15:00 --> 00:15:02 because God has poured out
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 his love into our hearts
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 by the Holy Spirit
00:15:05 --> 00:15:07 whom he has given us.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:10 Now for most of us
00:15:10 --> 00:15:10 who are Christians
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 for any length of time,
00:15:13 --> 00:15:15 the experience of suffering,
00:15:16 --> 00:15:19 big, intense, chaotic,
00:15:19 --> 00:15:21 absurd suffering,
00:15:21 --> 00:15:23 is going to mess with us.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:24 In fact,
00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 it's going to sometimes
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 make you feel like
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 you're never going to make
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 the finish line.
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 You started the Christian life
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 so well,
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 things were so happy
00:15:33 --> 00:15:35 and then it hit.
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 And it can make you feel
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 uncertain about the future.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 Will I make it?
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 And part of,
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 let's be honest,
00:15:43 --> 00:15:45 what fuels the despair
00:15:45 --> 00:15:47 is sometimes
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 the thought
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 lodges in your brain.
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 This isn't meant
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 to be happening to me.
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 I'm God's child.
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 I'm his justified,
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 forgiven sinner.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 We're done with that,
00:16:00 --> 00:16:00 aren't we, God?
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 Why am I still suffering?
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 It must be that
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 there's something wrong
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 with me.
00:16:06 --> 00:16:08 And Paul's answer is,
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 no, it doesn't mean
00:16:09 --> 00:16:09 there's anything wrong
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 with you.
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 This is where understanding
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 that salvation
00:16:12 --> 00:16:14 is both now
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 and not yet
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 is so helpful
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 because
00:16:16 --> 00:16:18 Paul actually
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 assumes that
00:16:19 --> 00:16:21 suffering of all sorts
00:16:21 --> 00:16:21 is going to hit
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 Christians
00:16:22 --> 00:16:24 if they live long enough.
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 And that's because
00:16:26 --> 00:16:28 we live this side
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 of the second coming
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 and the end of suffering
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 is not yet.
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 And so if you understand
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 that we live
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 between the now
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 and the not yet,
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 you can use
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 your suffering
