Passage: 1 Corinthians 12:1-31

00:00:03 --> 00:00:06 where many of the members played the French horn.
00:00:07 --> 00:00:10 They were proud about this.
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 And they gave the impression that all truly spiritual people
00:00:14 --> 00:00:17 were French hornists.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:18 Horners?
00:00:21 --> 00:00:23 French horn players.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:25 I struggled with that.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:26 What do you call them?
00:00:26 --> 00:00:32 They also think it's their right to exercise their gift
00:00:32 --> 00:00:34 when the church meets.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:36 And the result is chaos.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 60 people playing the French horn at the same time,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 all at different levels of degree of ability.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 And Paul writes to correct this abuse.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:50 He affirms the gift by saying,
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 I too play the French horn as much as any of you,
00:00:55 --> 00:00:56 in fact, more than any of you.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 But then he criticises them for not loving each other
00:01:00 --> 00:01:01 in the way they're using their gift.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:03 He suggests, could you limit yourselves
00:01:03 --> 00:01:08 to maybe two French hornists on a Sunday?
00:01:09 --> 00:01:12 And how about a few of you taking up the ukulele as an option?
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 Or maybe some of you help the church with coffee,
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 and maybe some could be out there parking the donkeys
00:01:20 --> 00:01:21 for you on a Sunday morning.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:26 And so 2 years later,
00:01:26 --> 00:01:27 we unearth this letter,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 and we go into a panic.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 No one in our church plays the French horn.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:36 Are we therefore an unspiritual church?
00:01:40 --> 00:01:41 That would miss the point.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 It would miss the point of the letter.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:47 The point is not that a spiritual church
00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 will have French horn players.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 The point is that there's a great variety
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 of the gifts that God has given.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 He wants to use those gifts,
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 those different gifts,
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 in harmony with one another,
00:01:58 --> 00:02:00 for the service of one another,
00:02:00 --> 00:02:01 for the service of the body,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 the church.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:08 That's the point of 1 Corinthians 12 to 14,
00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 in fact, of the whole lot.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 It fits completely with what we've seen already
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 in 1 Corinthians.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 This letter is about living the cross-shaped life,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 and Paul defines true spirituality
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 not by the presence of certain spiritual gifts
00:02:23 --> 00:02:24 or spiritual experiences.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 He defines true spirituality,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 Christian maturity,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 about living out what you know.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 It's about taking up your cross
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 and following Christ,
00:02:38 --> 00:02:39 is true spirituality.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 It is about dying to self
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 and rising to new life in Christ.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 It's about dying to my self-interest
00:02:45 --> 00:02:47 and serving others.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 It's the way of the cross.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 And so true spirituality is not judged by gifting.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 True spirituality prioritises love,
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 not spiritual gifts,
00:02:58 --> 00:02:58 not power,
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 not status,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:00 not eloquence,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:01 or anything else.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 And so that means that these chapters
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 will leave some of our contemporary questions
00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 about spiritual gifts unanswered,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:10 because Paul's intent here
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 was not to actually answer those questions.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 A great deal of confusion and hurt
00:03:16 --> 00:03:18 has been caused in recent decades
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 by Christians teaching or implying
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 that they are more spiritual
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 than other Christians.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:27 And our debates have often focused
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 on particular gifts
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 and whether certain Christians
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 are overemphasising them
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 or some are under-emphasising them.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 And some of our differences
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 on the subjects of spiritual gifts
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 are significant.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 And I believe we should continue
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 those discussions,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 but we must not let the discussions
00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 get out of proportion.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 Whichever side we find ourselves on,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:49 and you will probably find yourself
00:03:49 --> 00:03:50 on a different side than me,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:54 God's challenge to us
00:03:54 --> 00:03:56 is to focus
00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 not on the gifts,
00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 but on love.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 In Ephesians 4, verse 3,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 Paul urges us
00:04:02 --> 00:04:03 to make every effort
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 to keep the unity of the Spirit
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 through the bond of peace.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 He assumes
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 that a profound spiritual unity
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 already exists among Christians
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 because the Holy Spirit
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 has worked in their lives
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 to join us together in Christ
00:04:20 --> 00:04:25 and therefore join us to one another.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 We are already one in Christ
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 and in our call
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 to work out that unity in practice,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 not least by the patient,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 respectful love
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 that we are to show one another,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 particularly as we disagree
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 on secondary matters.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:47 And so this unity
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 and love principle
00:04:48 --> 00:04:49 need to be in play,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:49 I think,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 even in the next couple of days.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 Forefront of our thinking
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 as we venture into these chapters,
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 we, like the Corinthians,
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 need to be reminded
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 that love
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 is far more important
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 than any particular view
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 about the nature
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 and use of spiritual gifts.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 And so while not answering
00:05:10 --> 00:05:11 all our questions
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 on spiritual gifts,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 these chapters will leave us
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 with a significant challenge.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 Okay, chapter 12.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 Paul begins chapter 12
00:05:23 --> 00:05:23 by saying,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 now about spiritual gifts,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:25 brothers,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 I do not want you
00:05:26 --> 00:05:26 to be ignorant.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 The word translated
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 spiritual gifts there
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 is in fact different
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 from Paul's usual word
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 that he uses
00:05:33 --> 00:05:35 to describe gifts.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 It is in fact
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 better translated,
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 he better off starting off,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 now about spiritual things
00:05:40 --> 00:05:44 or now about spiritual people,
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 I do not want you
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 to be ignorant.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 It's possible
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 that this was the word
00:05:50 --> 00:05:50 that the Corinthians
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 themselves used
00:05:52 --> 00:05:56 for the supernatural experiences
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 that they valued so much
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 or it might have been
00:05:58 --> 00:06:01 how they described those
00:06:01 --> 00:06:01 who they thought
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 belonged to the
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 spiritually elite class.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:08 whichever it is,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 we do know
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 that they regarded
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 themselves as knowledgeable
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 on spiritual matters.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 And Paul humbles them
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 within the first couple
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 of verses.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 He brings them
00:06:21 --> 00:06:21 right down.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 He says,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 you are in fact
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 ignorant.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 The word is
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 not knowledgeable
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 but without
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 knowledge.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:32 You're actually in fact
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 ignorant
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 of what it means
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 to be
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 a spiritual person.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:37 You're ignorant
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 of what it means
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 about spiritual things.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:40 In fact,
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 so ignorant
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 you are just as ignorant
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 as when they were
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 pagans
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 worshipping idols.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 And what follows
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 in verse 3
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 is the corrective.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:52 The thing,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 this is the thing
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 that they don't understand.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 This is Paul's
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 foundational teaching
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 about true
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 spirituality.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 Therefore,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 I tell you
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 that no one
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 who is speaking
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 by the Spirit
00:07:06 --> 00:07:06 of God
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 says,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 Jesus be cursed.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 And no one
00:07:10 --> 00:07:10 can say,
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 Jesus is Lord
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 except by the Holy Spirit.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 That's his
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 foundational teaching.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 It's almost
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 an anticlimax,
00:07:20 --> 00:07:20 really.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 How could they
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 have missed it?
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 The simple
00:07:27 --> 00:07:27 lesson here
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 is that the
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 spiritual person
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 is any person
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 who can say,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 Jesus is Lord
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 and mean it.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 Really simple.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 And by ourselves,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 none of us
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 will recognise
00:07:43 --> 00:07:43 the truth
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 of Christ's
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 unique identity
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 as Saviour
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 and Lord
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 and respond to him
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 with repentance
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 and faith.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 It is only
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 by the Holy Spirit
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 that we are born again
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 and born again
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 and we cross
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 from darkness
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 to light
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 from spiritual death
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 to spiritual life.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 And this
00:08:03 --> 00:08:03 conversion
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 with its
00:08:04 --> 00:08:07 knowledge
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 of Christ's
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 lordship
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 is the
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 only marker
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 that distinguishes
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 between the
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 spiritual
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 and the
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 unspiritual
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 person.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 It's the only
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 marker.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 All
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 Christians
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 are spiritual
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 people
00:08:25 --> 00:08:25 is what
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 Paul says
00:08:26 --> 00:08:26 here.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 And it
00:08:29 --> 00:08:29 is from
00:08:29 --> 00:08:29 that very
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 foundation
00:08:30 --> 00:08:30 that Paul
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 launches
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 into teach
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 generally
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 about spiritual
00:08:34 --> 00:08:34 gifts
00:08:34 --> 00:08:34 and where
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 they fit.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:35 And I
00:08:35 --> 00:08:35 say generally
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 because the
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 exact nature
00:08:37 --> 00:08:37 of the
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 gifts
00:08:38 --> 00:08:38 he doesn't
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 really define.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 He doesn't
00:08:41 --> 00:08:41 go into
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 a lot of
00:08:42 --> 00:08:42 detail
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 about the
00:08:43 --> 00:08:43 actual
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 gifts.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 What,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 for example,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 is the
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 message of
00:08:48 --> 00:08:48 wisdom?
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 In verse
00:08:49 --> 00:08:49 8,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:50 we may
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 speculate
00:08:51 --> 00:08:51 that it
00:08:51 --> 00:08:51 could be
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 some kind
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 of revelation,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:53 it could
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 be a wise
00:08:54 --> 00:08:54 saying,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 or even
00:08:55 --> 00:08:55 the proclamation
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 of the
00:08:56 --> 00:08:56 cross,
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 which is
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 the wisdom
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 of God
00:08:58 --> 00:08:58 according to
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 chapter 1,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 but in
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 the end
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 we cannot
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 be really
00:09:02 --> 00:09:02 sure.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:03 And if
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 it was
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 important
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 that we
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 knew the
00:09:05 --> 00:09:05 exact
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 nature
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 of every
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 gift,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 then I
00:09:09 --> 00:09:09 suspect the
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 Holy Spirit
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 would have
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 made it a
00:09:11 --> 00:09:11 whole lot
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 clearer for
00:09:12 --> 00:09:12 us through
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 Paul here.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 And so it
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 would be a
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 mistake to
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 suggest that
00:09:17 --> 00:09:17 Paul is
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 giving us
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 a checklist
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 against which
00:09:20 --> 00:09:20 we should
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 measure our
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 church to
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 see if the
00:09:23 --> 00:09:23 different gifts
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 he mentions
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 are actually
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 present.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 He presumably
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 refers to
00:09:29 --> 00:09:29 these particular
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 gifts and
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 not others
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 because they
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 were especially
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 prevalent in
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 Corinth and
00:09:36 --> 00:09:36 were most
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 likely the
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 subject of
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 controversy.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 And so
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 notice a few
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 things.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 This is what
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 he does say
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 about gifts.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:43 Notice
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 firstly that
00:09:45 --> 00:09:45 the word
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 he uses
00:09:46 --> 00:09:46 for spiritual
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 gifts in
00:09:47 --> 00:09:47 verse 4
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 is the
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 same Greek
00:09:49 --> 00:09:52 word as
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 the word we
00:09:53 --> 00:09:53 use for
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 grace or
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 undeserved
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 gift.
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 That's its
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 foundation.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 Paul uses
00:10:02 --> 00:10:02 it here to
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 refer to any
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 God-given
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 ability of a
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 Christian which
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 God uses to
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 bless other
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 believers.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 that means
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 pride and
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 boasting about
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 our gift is
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 actually perverse
00:10:17 --> 00:10:20 because they're
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 not something
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 that we've
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 achieved.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 They've been
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 given to us
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 by God's
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 grace and
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 so writing to
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 this church in
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 Corinth that was
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 prone like us
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 like me to
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 spiritual pride
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 he stresses
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 repeatedly that
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 the gifts are
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 given in
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 verse 7
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 verse 8
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 and verse 11.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 Notice
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 secondly that
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 Paul stresses
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 that all
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 gifts come
00:10:44 --> 00:10:44 from the
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 same source
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 according to
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 verse 4
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 5 and 6
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 the gifts
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 are different
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 but they are
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 given by the
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 same spirit
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 in verse 4
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 the same
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 Lord in
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 verse 5
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 and the same
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 God in

00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 the Trinity

00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 accidental
