Shining the light on Christmas

00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 It looks fantastic, the building, to walk in here
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 and to lift the spirits after a difficult year,
00:00:28 --> 00:00:29 but also to walk around.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 I'm particularly grateful because I live here,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 and so I get to see all this stuff lit up each night.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:40 So if you want to come up and really enjoy it,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 just wander around the place at nighttime.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:44 It just really lifts the spirits.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 So well done to everyone who's contributed to that

00:00:55 --> 00:00:57 I think the lights and everything sort of puts that into it.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:02 And so I want to dive into, I think, the most exciting of Christmas texts,
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 and that's what you have in front of us in the genealogy
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 at the beginning of Matthew's Gospel.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:09 So if you'd like to get your Bibles open to Matthew chapter 1,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:11 and we're going to dive into this.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:14 There are three things that I want to see this morning
00:01:14 --> 00:01:16 from this list of names.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 And this is on your St. Paul's app.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 If you've got the St. Paul's app for a bit of an outline,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:22 we'll take some notes.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:27 Number one, Christmas is good news, not good advice.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:33 Secondly, Christmas turns our values upside down in this world.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 And thirdly, Christmas is the promise of ultimate rest.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:41 And so really, the title for today's talk is
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 Shining Light on Christmas Rest.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:46 Shining Light on Christmas Rest.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 So firstly, Christmas is good news, not good advice.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 Now, what we notice at the beginning of Matthew 1
00:01:51 --> 00:01:55 is that it doesn't begin with once upon a time.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 You see, that's how fairy tales,
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 that's how legends, myths all begin, once upon a time.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 Once upon a time sends the signal
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 that what we are currently engaging with
00:02:08 --> 00:02:10 probably didn't happen.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 Matthew begins very simply,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 this is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 the son of David, the son of Abraham.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:25 So what Matthew does right at the very beginning
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 of his Gospels, he grounds who Jesus is
00:02:29 --> 00:02:33 and what he does in history,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 in extensive history.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 Jesus is not a metaphor, he is real.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 The biblical accounts of Christmas
00:02:41 --> 00:02:46 are what actually happened in history.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 The birth of the son of God into the world
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 is a gospel, it's a good news,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:56 it's an announcement for all of the world.
00:02:56 --> 00:03:01 The birth accounts of Jesus are not telling us
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 what we should do,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:08 but what God has done in history for us.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 Jesus is the Messiah, the son of Abraham.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 You see, central to Abraham,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:16 God made a promise to Abraham
00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 that all the people of the world
00:03:19 --> 00:03:23 would be blessed through him.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 through a descendant of Abraham,
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 God would reverse the devastating impact
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 of sin and rejection of God
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 for all time and eternity for all people.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 And Matthew declares that in Jesus,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 this time has come.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 He's also declared here to be the son of David.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 God promised, extended that promise to Abraham
00:03:50 --> 00:03:53 and said to David in 2 Samuel 7,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 that one of your descendants, David,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 will sit on my throne
00:03:57 --> 00:04:02 and rule all the universe forever.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:05 And so what we have here
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 is these threads through the Old Testament
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 connecting promise to the covenant promise of David
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 right through until we see here,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 this is it.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 The moment has arrived.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 After 400 years of not hearing
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 a sound of revelation from God,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 Jesus bursts on the scene and God speaks.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 The time has come.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 The silence is over.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 That's what makes this good news.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 Jesus is the Messiah.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 Jesus is the fulfillment
00:04:39 --> 00:04:43 of God's thousands and thousands of years
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 of plan of salvation.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 And the heart of the Christian gospel
00:04:47 --> 00:04:50 is that you do not save yourself.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 God came to save us in the person of Jesus
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 on that very first Christmas night.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 You see, Christmas tells us
00:05:01 --> 00:05:04 that Christianity is unique.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 All other religions and philosophies of life
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 give advice.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 The founder of the great religions
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 come along and say something like,
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 do this, do that.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 I'm here to show you the way
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 to spiritual reality,
00:05:20 --> 00:05:20 to enlightenment,
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 to salvation.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 Do all these things
00:05:24 --> 00:05:27 and you will follow the path to salvation.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 That's advice.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 And some of the advice is quite useful.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 Christianity is not primarily
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 about self-improvement.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 We begin with Jesus
00:05:42 --> 00:05:46 not by adopting an ethic,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 not by turning over a new leaf,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 not even by joining a community.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 We begin by believing the report
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 about what God has done in history
00:05:58 --> 00:06:02 in the person of his son Jesus.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 Did God really become a human being?
00:06:07 --> 00:06:11 Did Jesus really live and suffer and die
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 as a sacrifice for all of humanity?
00:06:14 --> 00:06:19 Did he really rise triumphantly from death
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 to live forever and rule forever?
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 You see, Christmas shows us
00:06:25 --> 00:06:28 that Christianity is not good advice.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 It's good news.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 It's a pronouncement.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:31 It's a proclamation.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 Secondly, we see here
00:06:36 --> 00:06:39 that Christmas turns all of our values upside down.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:42 We live in an individualistic culture
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 where we commend ourselves
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 through performance
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 and through accomplishments.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:54 I had this awkward interaction
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 with someone recently,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 a gentleman recently
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 who has done fairly well in life,
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 but I never asked him
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 what he's done in life.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 And he was so self-absorbed,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 he didn't know what to ask me
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 what I did in life.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 And so all we had
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 was this surface conversation
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 because I refused to jump into the conversation
00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 about what do you do?
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 Who are you?
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 And so the conversation went nowhere.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 Absolutely nowhere.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 If I'd opened the door,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 I knew him well enough
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 to know we could spend an hour
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 just talking about him
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 and what he's accomplished in life.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:38 That's what we do
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 in individualistic culture.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 That's not how it worked
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 in the first century in the Middle East
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 where these events were taking place.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 A family tree
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 operated like a resume
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 in the first century.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:52 That is,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:53 your heritage,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 your clan,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 your family,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 your pedigree
00:07:57 --> 00:08:00 constituted your resume.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 And as they do now,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 as we do now,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 people adjust their resume
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 to leave out
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 the parts
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 that might be
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 embarrassing
00:08:13 --> 00:08:16 or a little less impressive.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 Most of us
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 in our 40s or 50s
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 do not put
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 our first job
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 on our resume.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 Turning burgers
00:08:28 --> 00:08:28 at Maccas,
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 cutting weeds
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 in a cotton field.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 And what we know
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 is in the first century,
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 Herod the Great
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 eliminated
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 many names
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 from his public genealogy
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 because he did not want
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 anyone to know
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 that those embarrassing people
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 were associated with him.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 It's like the story
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 I heard
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 once upon a time
00:08:54 --> 00:08:57 where the children
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 of a prominent family
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 were assembling
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 a book
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 of the family's history
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 as a birthday present
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 for the family patriarch.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 They commissioned
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 a professional biographer
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 and were careful
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 to warn
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 this professional biographer
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 of the black sheep
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 of the family
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 and they needed to do
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 something about
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 the black sheep.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 Black sheep problem
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 was a guy named
00:09:19 --> 00:09:19 Uncle George.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 Uncle George
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 was a convicted criminal.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 He'd been executed
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 in the electric chair
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 for murder.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 And the biographer
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 assured
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 the children
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 of the family
00:09:31 --> 00:09:31 that he could
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 handle the situation
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 so that there would be
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 no embarrassment
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 brought to the family.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 And so this is what he wrote
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 about Uncle George.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 Uncle George
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 occupied a chair
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 of applied electronics
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 at an important
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 government institution.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 He was attached
00:09:47 --> 00:09:47 to his position
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 by the strongest of ties
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 and his death
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 came as a real shock
00:09:51 --> 00:09:51 to everyone.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 We tend to do that
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 in our lives,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 don't we?
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 We cover over
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 the skeletons
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 in our closet
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 if you like.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 We do it because
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 we suspect
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 that people
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 will value us
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 less
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 if they knew
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 the true us.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 Warts and all
00:10:12 --> 00:10:14 as we say.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 And so it's quite surprising
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 that in a culture
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 where you just
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 did not do this,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 Matthew
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 does the exact
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 opposite with Jesus.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 Doesn't cover over
00:10:29 --> 00:10:29 the skeletons
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 in the closet
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 at all.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 And it helps us
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 to see that
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 God's value system
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 is radically
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 different than ours.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 First of all,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 I want you to notice
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 that there are
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 five women
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 listed in this
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 list of this
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 genealogy.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 In ancient
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 patriarchal societies,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 a woman
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 was virtually
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 never named
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 in a list
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 like this
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 unless
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 they were
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 quite literally
00:10:56 --> 00:10:56 a queen.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 Let alone
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 to have
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 five of them.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 Women
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 were gender
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 outsiders
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 in those cultures.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 They had no
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 legal rights.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 They couldn't
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 inherit property.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 They couldn't
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 give testimony
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 in court.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 And yet
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 they are here
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 named in
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 Jesus'
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 genealogy.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 And what's
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 more,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 three of
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 the five
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 are Gentiles.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 Tamar,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 Rahab,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 and Ruth.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 To the
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 ancient Jew,
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 these women
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 are regarded
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 as unclean
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 Gentiles.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:33 They were
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 not just
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 gender
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 outsiders,
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 but these
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 are racial
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 and religious
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 outsiders.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 And yet
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 Matthew
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 deliberately
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 includes
00:11:43 --> 00:11:43 them
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 in the
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 family
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 tree
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 of the
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 long
00:11:46 --> 00:11:46 awaited
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 Messiah
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 of the
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 world,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 the Jewish
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 Messiah.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 And by
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 including
00:11:56 --> 00:11:56 them,
00:11:57 --> 00:11:57 Matthew
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 recalls
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 some of
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 the most
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 sordid,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:01 nasty,
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 immoral
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 occasions
00:12:04 --> 00:12:04 in the
00:12:04 --> 00:12:04 Bible.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 It says
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 in verse
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 three that
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 Judah was
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 the father
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 of Perez
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 and Zerah
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 and the
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 mother was
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 Tamar.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 Tamar
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 was
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 Judah's
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 daughter-in-law
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 and she
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 tricked him
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 into sleeping
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 with her.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 It was an
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 act that was
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 against the
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 law of God.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 And even
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 though Jesus
00:12:26 --> 00:12:26 was a
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 descendant of
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 Perez and
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 not Zerah,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 Matthew
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 includes them
00:12:31 --> 00:12:31 both.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:35 and both
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 Judah and
00:12:36 --> 00:12:36 Tamar
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 so that
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 we remember
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 that whole
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 sordid
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 story.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:43 The
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 saviour of
00:12:44 --> 00:12:44 the world
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 came into
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 the world
00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 into a
00:12:49 --> 00:12:49 dysfunctional
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 family
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 just like
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 yours
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 and mine.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 And remember
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 Rahab?
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 Rahab?
00:12:59 --> 00:13:03 Mentioned
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 in verse
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 five,
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 just a
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 Gentile,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 she was
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 a prostitute.
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 But the
00:13:10 --> 00:13:10 most
00:13:10 --> 00:13:10 interesting
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 story is
00:13:11 --> 00:13:11 in verse
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 six,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 it mentions
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 King
00:13:13 --> 00:13:13 David,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 royalty in
00:13:15 --> 00:13:15 the family
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 tree and
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 you go,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 woo,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 that's
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 fine,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 good
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 stuff.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 Except
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 in one
00:13:22 --> 00:13:22 of the
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 most,
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 I think
00:13:24 --> 00:13:24 one of
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 the great
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 and ironic
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 understatements
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 of the
