Passage: Luke 10:1-21


00:00:00 --> 00:00:13 Good morning, everyone. Great to be in church with you again this morning. My name's Steve. If I've not met you before, I'm the senior pastor here at St. Paul's, and as Nick has indicated, we're coming towards the end of our vision series for this year.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:29 A worldview is the way that we, as individuals, but also as cultures and societies, the way that we understand the way things are. That's what a worldview is.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:47 And there are six basic questions that all worldviews should address, and they're on the screen. Things like, where did the universe come from? Where is things heading? What should I do or how should I live?
00:00:47 --> 00:00:58 How do we attain our goals in life, fulfill our goals in life? What's true or false? And where did the answers to the first five questions come from?
00:00:58 --> 00:01:10 And is whatever the source of those answers are, where it came from, is it internally consistent? That's the basic questions in terms of forming a worldview.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:16 And remarkably, because most of us don't think about it at all, but every single person has got a worldview.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:36 Even if you don't are even aware of the worldview, you are operating under a worldview. All of our value systems, our principles, the choices we make, the things that we commit to, are all attached to a much deeper thing, which is our understanding of the way things are.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:46 And the Christian worldview is based on God's story of all things as it is outlaid in the Bible.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:52 And it has four main chapters in it. The Christian worldview has four main chapters.
00:01:52 --> 00:02:04 Number one, chapter one is creation. The God who always existed, never had a beginning, never had an end, created all things by speaking them into existence, such as his power.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:07 He made humanity for a special relationship with him.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:23 In fact, Christianity is the only worldview of all worldviews of the history of humanity, where a divine creator creates all things purely out of love.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:25 That's it.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 Chapter two in the Christian worldview is the fall.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 Humanity rejects relationship and rule of God.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:43 All people live life without consideration for their maker at all, flowing from the very first people right through to our current day and age.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 And the Bible calls that sin.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:53 And the sin is the biggest problem for humanity.
00:02:53 --> 00:03:04 In fact, it has cosmic consequences of fracturing our relationship with God, with each other, with ourselves and with the rest of creation.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:15 Humanity's special dignity created in the image of God means that God holds us especially accountable for rejecting him.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:27 And we see that in the early chapters of the Bible where God's judgment comes upon the nations of that time in Genesis 11 with the Tower of Babel.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:42 It's an incident where God scatters people from his presence across the earth so that they will no longer work together in order to rebel against God as a collective, to attempt to defund God.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:56 It's a judgment that ultimately symbolizes the ultimate separation from God and his presence and everything good for all of eternity for those who live a life consistently rejecting God.
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 Chapter three is the story of redemption.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:03 And the great news is it starts within on chapter 12 of the Bible.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 It starts right there.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:12 God has a plan to reverse our rejection of him and make all things new.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:20 And that plan begins with a promise to an obscure dude named Abram in Genesis 12.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:30 And God takes this guy Abram, gives him a new name, Abraham, and says that through you, all peoples of the world will be blessed.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:39 And it's a redemption plan that is slowly worked out in all the chaos and carnage of human history as revealed in the Bible.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:43 And it finds its culmination in the person of Jesus Christ.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:57 The Bible claims that Jesus, the Son of God, the creator of all things, to solve humanity's greatest problem and to deal with the need for them to be redeemed and brought back to God,
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 God has to enter his own story.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:13 Not as a vengeful God seeking revenge, but as a servant of humanity, as we just read from Philippians 2.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:25 And everyone, what he does is, as a servant, he takes the judgment, his own judgment, the judgment of God for our sin upon himself.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 He dies the death that we should die for our rejection of him.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:36 But the great news is, he rises triumphantly, therefore defeating sin.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:46 And everyone who turns back to God in repentance and trusting Jesus is gathered back from all the corners of the world,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:54 gathered back into relationship with God, become members of his new family, his new society, his new people,
00:05:54 --> 00:06:01 his new nation who he will dwell with for all of eternity for our joy and his glory.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:14 And the work of gathering people from all nations continues this day, 2025, through God's new people,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:22 as Jesus sends them out filled with the spirit and the good news of reconciliation to the very corners of the world,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:30 into every culture and people, group and nation, making disciples of all people until chapter 4 comes.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 And chapter 4 is the new creation.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 It's the chapter with no ending.
00:06:36 --> 00:07:06 It's the chapter with no ending.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 It's the Christian worldview in a nutshell.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:14 This is so much more purposeful.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:25 And so, therefore, the opposite of the main worldview that is currently dominating our society here in this country,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:33 a worldview that says life's an accident, there's no reason or purpose or meaning behind existence at all,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:38 and therefore just do what you can because when you're gone, you're gone.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 That's it.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:47 One of the things I've been saying throughout this series
00:07:47 --> 00:07:56 is that there is often a gap between the great truths of the Christian faith
00:07:56 --> 00:08:02 and the things that we hold in our mind to be true as God's revealed them
00:08:02 --> 00:08:10 and the lives that such truths should produce in terms of character and priorities.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:15 And to close the gap, what we need is grace-fueled rhythms,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 spiritual disciplines, things that God has given us
00:08:18 --> 00:08:26 that push God's plan of redemption in Jesus down from our minds
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 into the centre of our lives
00:08:28 --> 00:08:33 so that it is, number one, constantly before us
00:08:33 --> 00:08:39 and it comes out of us in terms of changed characters
00:08:39 --> 00:08:45 and priorities and lives as we live confidently in the Christian worldview.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 So as we open up Luke chapter 10,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:56 we are sitting in chapter 3 of God's worldview,
00:08:56 --> 00:09:00 the chapter of redemption.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 And the main concern as we open up chapter 10,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:11 the main concern of Luke 1 to 9
00:09:11 --> 00:09:14 is the question of who is Jesus.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 And then at the very end of chapter 9,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 it shifts.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 The theme shifts for the next few chapters.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 And it shifts to,
00:09:29 --> 00:09:34 if Jesus is who Luke 1 to 9 says he is,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:37 that he is the creator eternal God,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 the one who is the author of life,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 the one who has written the worldview,
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 written history,
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 if that is true
00:09:47 --> 00:09:52 and that he has entered into his world for our redemption,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 if that is true,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 what does it mean for life?
00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 That's where we get to chapter 10.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:05 And the general answer to that question is,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 we should give our lives to Jesus,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 we should follow Jesus,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 we should obey Jesus.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:15 And the specific answer that we're looking at today
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 in chapter 10 verses 1 to 21 is,
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 if that's true,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:21 if Jesus is who he says he is
00:10:21 --> 00:10:25 and that is how he has said that the world is,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 then as followers of Jesus,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:33 we are messengers of God in this world.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:36 That's what we're looking at today.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 And so on the St. Paul's app,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:42 you've got four points there
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 as we journey through this.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 First of all, mission.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:51 The mission that we have as Christians
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 in terms of,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 the mission in terms of our part to play
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 in God's story of all things
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 is in the very first sentence.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 After this,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 the Lord appointed 72 others
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 and sent them two by two
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 ahead of him to every town and place
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 where he was about to go.
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 Again, verse 3,
00:11:09 --> 00:11:12 go, I am sending you out.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 Now,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 at the beginning of chapter 9,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:19 Jesus sends out his core team,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:20 you know,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 the 12,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 the 12 original disciples.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:26 And if we had just chapter 9
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 and not chapter 10,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 we could have stopped there
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 and we could deduce
00:11:31 --> 00:11:34 that the sending out job here
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 is for those in vocational ministry.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 You know,
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 the core team,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 you know,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 for Jesus' key disciples,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 not the rest of the crowd.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 You know,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 it's the job of the professionals,
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 it's the pastors,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 it's the clergy,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 it's the evangelists,
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 those kind of people.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:46 It's their job.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 The rest of us,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 we pay them to do that job.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:50 Like,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 that's our job,
00:11:51 --> 00:11:51 you know.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 But then we get chapter 10
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 and chapter 10
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 entirely undoes that idea.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 Jesus sends out 72.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:03 Now,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 if you've hung around the Bible at all,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 you would know
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 anytime a number like this pops up,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 you go,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 what's the significance of 72?
00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 Why 72?
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 I mean,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 it's a random,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 you,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 you,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 you,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 you,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 you,
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 and just happens to be 72?
00:12:18 --> 00:12:18 Well,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 scholars will tell you
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 there's something very significant
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 happening here.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 I mentioned earlier
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 God's judgment
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 upon the nations
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 in the Tower of Babel incident,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 which is in
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 Genesis 11.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 It's in the,
00:12:35 --> 00:12:35 you know,
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 the chapter 2 of God's story,
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 scatters people to the ends of the earth.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 One chapter before that
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 and chapter 10
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 and chapter 11
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 actually go as one unit.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 So in chapter 10,
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 what we have there
00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 is a list of the nations
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 that God is judging
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 at Babel
00:12:52 --> 00:12:55 and in the Greek language version
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 of the Old Testament,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 think of the Septuagint,
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 there is 72 nations listed.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:02 72.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:06 This is Jesus' way of saying,
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 I'm sending you out
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 to all peoples
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 of the nations.
00:13:13 --> 00:13:13 This is,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 as you go out,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 you are reversing
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 my judgment.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 It's the symbolic reversal
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 of Babel
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 and it is the responsibility
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 of all his people
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 to send out.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 A Christian
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 is someone
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 who has been
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 gathered from
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 the nations of the world
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 back into intimate relationship
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 with God
00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 through Jesus Christ
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 and into his new people.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 Then,
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 having been gathered,
00:13:47 --> 00:13:47 they are then
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 sent out
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 on mission,
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 sent out
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 on God's mission
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 to see
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 more people
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 from the nations
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 gathered into
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 God's new family.
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 Every disciple
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 of Jesus
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 is normally,
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 naturally,
00:14:04 --> 00:14:04 personally
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 involved in
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 God's work
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 of reaching
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 those who don't
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 have salvation
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 and hope
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 in Jesus
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 as much as
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 they are
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 personally,
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 normally,
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 naturally
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 involved
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 in corporate
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 worship,
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 Bible study,
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 prayer
00:14:21 --> 00:14:23 in exactly
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 the same way.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 Christians
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 and churches
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 can never
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 outsource
00:14:29 --> 00:14:31 the mission
00:14:31 --> 00:14:31 of God
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 to others.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 We can
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 outsource
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 roofing repairs
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 to others,
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 but we can
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 never outsource
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 the mission
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 of God's work
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 to others.
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 It is all
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 too easy,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:44 I believe,
00:14:45 --> 00:14:45 to put up
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 pictures of missionaries,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 to receive
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 new letters,
00:14:49 --> 00:14:49 to give
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 financially
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 to missions,
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 be on boards
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 of organizations,
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 even support
00:14:55 --> 00:14:55 the running
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 of an evangelistic
00:14:57 --> 00:14:57 course like
00:14:57 --> 00:14:59 Hope Explored
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 and applaud
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 myself that
00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 I've got a
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 mission mindset
00:15:03 --> 00:15:05 and that
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 we are
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 ascending
00:15:07 --> 00:15:07 church.
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 I'm not saying
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 those things
00:15:12 --> 00:15:12 are bad.
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 What I'm
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 saying is
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 as he's
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 gathered people,
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 God sends
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 us out,
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 each of us
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 personally.
00:15:22 --> 00:15:25 we obviously
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 do it together
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 in partnership,
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 but we go
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 out personally,
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 each of us
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 has skin
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 in the game
00:15:32 --> 00:15:34 as the old
00:15:34 --> 00:15:34 saying goes.
00:15:35 --> 00:15:35 If you've never
00:15:35 --> 00:15:35 heard of it,
00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 don't worry
00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 about it.
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 That's the first
00:15:38 --> 00:15:38 thing.
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 There's a mission
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 and we're all
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 personally involved
00:15:41 --> 00:15:41 in it.
00:15:42 --> 00:15:42 Secondly,
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 there's a message.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:44 Jesus'
00:15:44 --> 00:15:46 command to
00:15:46 --> 00:15:46 make disciples
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 necessarily
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 involves
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 helping people
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 who are not
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 yet followers
00:15:51 --> 00:15:51 of Jesus
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 to become
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 followers
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 of Jesus.
00:15:55 --> 00:15:55 And core
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 to the
00:15:56 --> 00:15:56 Christian
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 mission
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 is a
00:15:58 --> 00:15:58 message.
00:15:59 --> 00:15:59 Yes,
00:16:00 --> 00:16:00 the
00:16:00 --> 00:16:03 Christian
00:16:03 --> 00:16:03 mission
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 includes
00:16:04 --> 00:16:04 healing
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 and
00:16:05 --> 00:16:05 restoration.
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 It includes
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 deeds of
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 love and
00:16:09 --> 00:16:09 mercy.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:10 Chapter 10,
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 you just need
00:16:11 --> 00:16:11 to read the
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 second bit
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 of that.
00:16:13 --> 00:16:13 The Good
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 Samaritan,
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 you'll see
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 that that's
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 another core
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 aspect of
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 the Christian
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 life.
00:16:18 --> 00:16:20 Have a look
00:16:20 --> 00:16:20 at verse
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 9.
00:16:22 --> 00:16:22 Heal the
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 sick who
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 are there
00:16:24 --> 00:16:24 and tell
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 them the
00:16:25 --> 00:16:25 kingdom of
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 God has
00:16:26 --> 00:16:26 come near
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 to you.
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 Then in
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 verse 11,
00:16:29 --> 00:16:29 yet be sure
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 of this,
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 the kingdom
00:16:31 --> 00:16:31 of God
00:16:31 --> 00:16:31 has come
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 near.
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 Again,
00:16:33 --> 00:16:33 verse 16,
00:16:34 --> 00:16:34 whoever
00:16:34 --> 00:16:34 listens to
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 you listens
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 to me,
00:16:36 --> 00:16:36 whoever
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 rejects you
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 rejects me,
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 but whoever
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 rejects me
00:16:40 --> 00:16:40 rejects him
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 who sent
00:16:41 --> 00:16:41 me.
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 Every
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 follower of
00:16:44 --> 00:16:46 Jesus has
00:16:46 --> 00:16:46 been given
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 a message
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 that they
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 are to
00:16:49 --> 00:16:49 communicate
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 and to
00:16:50 --> 00:16:52 urge those
00:16:52 --> 00:16:52 who hear
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 it to
00:16:53 --> 00:16:53 believe it.
00:16:54 --> 00:16:54 Now,
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 what I've
00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 just said
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 there is
