00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 It's good together again tonight.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 We've been working through the book of Ephesians
00:00:55 --> 00:01:00 and I'm going to suggest that I'm going to try to set the bar really, really high.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:05 Not in my preaching but in terms of what the Word hopefully will achieve tonight.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:13 If you're feeling tired and weak and besieged and spiritually dry,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:22 perhaps what you need in your life, in your spiritual life, is to be Spirit-filled.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 And that's what we're going to be talking about tonight.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:31 I'm hoping that we'll walk away tonight having a clear understanding
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 of what it means to be Spirit-filled.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 And as a result, walk away from tonight being Spirit-filled.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:47 We have seen in the book of Ephesians the work of the Father
00:01:47 --> 00:01:53 who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:57 We have considered the work of the Son.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:04 It is in Him that we receive the blessing from the Father.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:11 And tonight, or this afternoon, we'll consider the work of the Spirit
00:02:11 --> 00:02:17 to complete the picture of the work of God for us.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:23 But firstly, one of the great things in spending the weekend on a book
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 is that we can actually see the coherency, the argument, the flow of the book.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:34 But just so that if you can indulge me,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 I'll repeat a little bit of the flow of the book.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 Paul often writes from the indicative to the imperative,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 if you know what I mean.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:50 Indiegative means what happens, what has happened.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 Imperative is what you must do.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:54 It's sort of like command.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 And often in the way Paul writes,
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 the first half of his writing would be in the indicative,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 what God has done, He's blessed us,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 He's reconciled us in Jesus,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 He's caused us to be born again,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 and He's made us into a new humanity,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:13 the indicative.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 Once He's established the indicative,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 He moves on to the imperative,
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 the implications of the indicative.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 Since God has done all this,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:26 what does it mean for us?
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 This is where the rubber hits the road.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:34 And the imperative starts for us in the book of Ephesians,
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 Ephesians 4.1,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:41 which we looked at this morning.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:46 But it might be worthwhile to cast our eyes to there again.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 If you have your Bibles in front of you,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:55 it will be good to open them to Ephesians 4.1.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 So having seen what God has done,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 He then turns to,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 well, what does it mean for us,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 to those of us who have been born again,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:06 reconciled to God?
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 Chapter 4, verse 1.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 As a prisoner for the Lord,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 then, I urge you to live a life
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 worthy of the calling you have received.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 The indicative is,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:18 you have been called,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 you've been made new,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 so live like it.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 The reality is,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 you've been changed as people live.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 So start,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 chapter 4, verse 1,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 is almost a heading for the rest of the book.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 Chapter 4 to 6.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 We are to walk in newness of life.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 We are to walk in holiness.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 That is, in a way that pleases God,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 and in a way that is dramatically opposed
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 to the life that we used to live,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 and to those around us.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 4.17.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:57 Well, what does that life of holiness look like?
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 Chapter 5 is the beginning of it.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 Chapter 5, verse 1 and 2.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 Be imitators of God, therefore,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 as dearly beloved children.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 So we are to live like God.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 We're to imitate God.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:13 Well, what does that mean?
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 Are we to be tall like God?
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 To be strong like God?
00:05:18 --> 00:05:18 No.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 No.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 In verse 2, he explains.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 To imitate God,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 to live a new life in Christ,
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 means to live a life of love.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 God is love.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 So his children are, therefore,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 to love.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 Just as Christ loved us
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 and gave himself for us
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 as a fragrant offering and sacrifice.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 So this is what...
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 And the rest of the chapter is an exposition,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:48 is an explanation of what a life of love look like.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 There will not be any sexual immorality.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:56 Sexual immorality is profoundly unloving.
00:05:58 --> 00:06:01 The children of God are to be like God.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 And verse 8,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 it means that we walk in the light,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 not in darkness.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 And verse 15 to 21,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 which is our passage,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 continues in that instruction,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 in the imperative.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 And he used the word living or walking.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 And let's have a look at that again.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 In light of what God has done,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 verse 15 of chapter 5,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 we are to be careful
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 how we are to live,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 not as unwise,
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 but as wise.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 The children of God
00:06:40 --> 00:06:43 live lives of love
00:06:43 --> 00:06:43 and in the light,
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 but we are also
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 to live wisely.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 Why is that?
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 And he
00:06:52 --> 00:06:56 gives us the motivation.
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 If you look a little bit early
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 in the passage that we looked at today,
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 starting in verse 8,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 this is what he says.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 For once you were...
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 Sorry.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 For you were once darkness,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 but now you are light in the Lord.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 Live as children of light.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 For the fruit of light consists
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 in all goodness,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:15 righteousness,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:16 and truth.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 And find out what pleases the Lord.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 Have nothing to do with
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 the fruitless deeds of darkness,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 but rather expose them.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 For it is shameful
00:07:25 --> 00:07:25 even to mention
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 what the disobedient do
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 in secret.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 But everything exposed
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 by the light becomes visible.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 For it is light
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 that makes everything visible.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 Et cetera, et cetera.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 There is an exposure
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 of the darkness.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 We are to be part
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 of the process
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 of exposing that darkness.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 A little bit earlier on
00:07:47 --> 00:07:47 in chapter 5,
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 particularly in verses 5 and 6,
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 it talks about
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 the judgment of God.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 In fact,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 that provides the motivation
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 for the wise living.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 If the judgment of God
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 is about to come,
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 if the axe is about to fall,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 we are to live wisely.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 Okay?
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 The insanity,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:09 sorry,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 the definition of insanity
00:08:11 --> 00:08:11 supposedly,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 according to Einstein,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 is to do the same thing
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 over and over again
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 and to expect
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 different results.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 You know,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 that's insane.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:25 That is,
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 that is what a fool
00:08:28 --> 00:08:28 would do.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:32 The wise person learns,
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 adopt,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 adept.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 You see,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 you make a mistake
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 and you change your behavior
00:08:39 --> 00:08:42 so that a different outcome
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 would ensue.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:44 Fools,
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 on the other hand,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 they don't learn.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 That's what,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 by definition,
00:08:48 --> 00:08:48 a foolish person.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 And the wise
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 understands the future.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 The wise understands
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 that the judgment of God
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 is about to come
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 on the unrighteousness
00:08:58 --> 00:08:58 and the wickedness
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 on our world.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 And as a result,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 they learn.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 And when they learn,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 verse 16,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 they make the most
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 of their time.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 They make the most
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 of every opportunity
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 because they know
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 that the days are evil.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 Literally,
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 they redeem the time.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 They are careful
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 how they invest
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 the time
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 that they have.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 I don't know
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 whether you have thought
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 about how much time
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 that you have.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 This could be
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 your last night
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 on earth.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:34 Could be.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 What would you want
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 to be investing
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 your time in?
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 And I'm glad
00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 that you're here
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 investing your time
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 here rather than
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 at home watching TV,
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 playing computer game,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 or being selfish,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 shopping,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 gorging yourself
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 with food.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 We are here
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 making the most
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 of our time.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 That's what it means
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 to be wise
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 in light of
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 the judgment
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 of God.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 Verse 17,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:03 therefore,
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 don't be foolish,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 but understand
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 what the Lord's
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 will is.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 It's a
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 different way
00:10:13 --> 00:10:13 of saying
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 the same thing.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 Don't be an idiot.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 Don't be a fool.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 Live wisely,
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 and living wisely,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 redeeming the time
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 means to find out
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 what the will
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 of the Lord is.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 Verses 18 to 21.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 Don't get drunk

00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 is not a new command.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 In fact,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 it's an explanation
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 of what it means
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 to be wise.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 To be wise,
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 to find out
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 the will of God,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 is to be filled
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 with the Spirit.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 The different ways
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 of saying the same thing.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 Of course,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 it begs the question,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 what does it mean
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 to be filled
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 with the Spirit?
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 I don't know
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 what you think
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 it means.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 If you were to take
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 the English literally,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 it's, you know,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 you are a vessel
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 and the Spirit
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 fills you up.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 And when you're drained
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 of the Spirit,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 you need another
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 fresh filling
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 of the Spirit.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 If you take
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 the metaphor literally,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 is that what it means?
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 Firstly,
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 if we were to understand
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 the phrase
00:11:57 --> 00:11:57 being filled
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 with the Spirit,
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 you see immediately
00:12:01 --> 00:12:01 the context
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 is a contrast.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 If you look at 18 again,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 it says,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:09 don't get drunk on wine.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 Instead,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 be filled
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 with the Spirit.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:14 Spirit is intended
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 to be a contrast.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 There's the drinking,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 being drunk,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 and being filled
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 with the Spirit.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 If you can imagine,
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 it's literally,
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 instead of being filled
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 with wine,
00:12:26 --> 00:12:26 Spirit,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:27 be filled
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 with the Spirit.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 So that's actually
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 the contrast.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:31 Don't be filled
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 by Spirit,
00:12:33 --> 00:12:33 but be filled
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 with the Spirit.
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 It's not that
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 I believe
00:12:37 --> 00:12:37 the Ephesian church
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 had a problem
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 with drunkenness,
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 not like
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 the typical
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 Aussie
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 sort of situation.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 We don't know,
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 but I don't think
00:12:46 --> 00:12:46 that's the case.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 But rather,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 drunkenness
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 and all that
00:12:51 --> 00:12:51 entails
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 kind of epitomizes
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 the ways
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 of darkness.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 If you want
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 to picture
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 a world
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 without God
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 not knowing
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 what the future
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 will hold
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 in response
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 to the evil
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 of the day
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 where there is
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 no hope
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 and no future,
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 what would
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 that world
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 look like?
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 It would look
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 like the city
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 of Sydney
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 on a Saturday
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 night.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 It would look
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 like
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 service paradise
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 after the HSC.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 Where there is
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 no future
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 and you want
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 to forget
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 the past,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 you get
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 drunk.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 You fill
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 yourself
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 with spirit.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 When you
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 experience
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 the evil
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 of the day,
00:13:42 --> 00:13:42 a boring
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 marriage,
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 unruly
00:13:45 --> 00:13:45 kids,
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 you seek
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 to escape.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 They escape
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 the evil
00:13:52 --> 00:13:52 of the day
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 and so you
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 gorge yourself

00:28:20 --> 00:28:21 unanswered prayers,
00:28:21 --> 00:28:22 periods of doubt
00:28:22 --> 00:28:23 and depression,
00:28:23 --> 00:28:24 genocide, for
00:28:24 --> 00:28:25 evil?
00:28:26 --> 00:28:26 Are we to give
00:28:26 --> 00:28:28 thanks for
00:28:28 --> 00:28:28 those things?
00:28:29 --> 00:28:30 Yes, in all
00:28:30 --> 00:28:31 things, we are
00:28:31 --> 00:28:32 told by Paul in
00:28:32 --> 00:28:34 Romans 8, God

00:28:58 --> 00:28:59 circumstance.

00:29:10 --> 00:29:10 God is to be
00:29:10 --> 00:29:11 praised, but
00:29:11 --> 00:29:13 rather we are
00:29:13 --> 00:29:14 to direct our
00:29:14 --> 00:29:15 thanks and
00:29:15 --> 00:29:16 praise to the
00:29:16 --> 00:29:16 source of all
00:29:16 --> 00:29:17 things, God
00:29:17 --> 00:29:18 the Father
00:29:18 --> 00:29:18 who has blessed
00:29:18 --> 00:29:20 us in Christ
00:29:20 --> 00:29:20 with all
00:29:20 --> 00:29:21 things.

00:29:48 --> 00:29:51 your thankfulness
