00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 In my early days as involved in ministry, going back a number of years now,
00:00:04 --> 00:00:10 I wasn't particularly schooled in the traditions of the church.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:14 And so therefore you make a number of mistakes.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:19 I remember that one day distributing communion was my first time, in fact, ever distributing communion.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:24 And there was a bunch of people out the front there.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:26 The bread had gone through.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:26 And I knew the system.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:28 I'd watched people do this.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:30 It seemed pretty straightforward.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:37 You went along, followed the person with the bread, and you gave them a bit of a drink from the cup.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:43 You said a few words, and you wiped the cup in a certain way, and you handed it to the next person, and next person, next person.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 On this particular Sunday, which was my first time, there was a number of guests there at church.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:57 And I just assumed, quite ignorantly, that everyone took it exactly the same way.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 Until I got to this gentleman, and I had the cup.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 I said a few words, and I put the cup in front of him.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 And he didn't take it.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:09 Well, he mustn't want it.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 So I stood there, and he looked at me, and I looked at him.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:16 We're trying to communicate silently about what's meant to happen at this point.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:17 He didn't take it.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:26 And then eventually, all he did, kneeling in front of me, was grab the cup just with that much of his fingers and his thumb.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:32 I didn't realize at that particular point that in some church traditions, you're not actually meant to touch the cup at all.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:36 I still regard it as, in fact, the actual body and blood of Christ.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:42 And only a person who's me, who's been ordained like a priest, should touch this thing.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 More full than him, because I actually wasn't one at the time.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 But he only touched it.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 And I'm sort of standing there thinking, he hasn't got a good grip on that cup.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:58 I didn't realize that what I'm meant to do is to sort of tip it towards him.
00:01:58 --> 00:01:59 I didn't know that.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:00 I was completely ignorant.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 And I'm thinking, he hasn't really got a grip.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 He's looking at me.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 He's just touching it.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:06 I'm looking at him thinking, get a better grip.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 And then I thought, well, he's an early gentleman.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:11 He must know what he's doing.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 So I let it go.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 And so what happened in that particular moment was,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:22 these little tiny grip he had meant that the cup, which was about three quarters full,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:26 tilted and went bang, under his nose.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:32 And I think that's why one of the reasons why one of the church traditions is you should use white wine and not red wine,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 is because red wine has a tendency of staining.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:45 And this three quarters of a full cup hit his nose, went onto his glasses and down his shirt.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:48 And so I had no idea what to do.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:54 Of course, the minister at the time saw this unfolding, decided not to rescue me.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 He ducked off into the vestry and was killing himself laughing.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:00 I could see him from where I was.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 And all I could think of was, well, I've got a cloth, put my hand on his head,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:10 and I was wiping his glasses so he could see.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:17 And whatever sins he thought he was being absolved for in that moment didn't include the glare on his face at me,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 I can tell you after that.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:23 I had no concept at all that for some people in church traditions,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 the traditions mattered a lot to them.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 A lot to them.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 And it's interesting that when you turn to the Bible,
00:03:33 --> 00:03:44 that Jesus debates with the religious leaders of his time the subject of the traditions we have.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:49 It came up often for the religious people that Jesus dealt with.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:54 The religious guys were constantly outraged with this Jesus,
00:03:54 --> 00:04:00 who did not observe their traditions as he said they thought they should be observed.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 That they thought were actually, in fact, mandatory.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:12 And in Matthew 15, Jesus, he zeroes in on this issue of the real problem with traditions.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:19 He says that they have this awful potential to undermine, over time,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:25 the very obedience in God's word that they were originally may have been intended to express.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:35 He says that the human heart is almost limitless in its capacity to come up with rules and regulations and traditions
00:04:35 --> 00:04:39 that may at some point have been quite useful and helpful,
00:04:39 --> 00:04:44 but which gradually become more distorted, more corrupted,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:52 more, in fact, important than the word of God and obedience to the word of God.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:58 The human heart's almost limitless in its capacity to do that.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 And that's the issue, or certainly one of the issues,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:07 one of the sparks that ignited the Protestant Reformation in the 1600s.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 Sorry, in the 16th century.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:15 In 1516, Johann Tetzel, a Diminishian friar,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:21 was sent to Germany by the Roman Catholic Church to sell these things called indulgences.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 According to Roman Catholic theology,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:30 an indulgence is kind of like a get-out-of-jail-free card
00:05:30 --> 00:05:39 to lessen the amount of time that a person needs to suffer in order to go to heaven.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 So they would have this view that you would go to purgatory,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:47 and an indulgence could be granted by a priest
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 to lessen the amount of time in purgatory
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 so that you could eventually go to heaven.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:59 You see, Roman Catholic teaching states that purgatory is the place that the soul goes to
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 after death to get purged.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 Their thinking is that while Jesus died on the cross for our sins,
00:06:09 --> 00:06:15 his death was not effective for complete cleansing of sin.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:20 Roman Catholic teaching states that there is still a corruption of the human heart,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:24 of the soul that remains, which needs to be purged.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:28 And the way you purge it is by suffering.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 And then once you've gone through the appropriate amount of suffering,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 you can then go from that stage into heaven.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 That's what purgatory is.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 And it's in this climate in the Middle Ages
00:06:39 --> 00:06:46 that saw the abuse of these indulgences which were granted by priests,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:50 and ultimately the exploitation of the poor and the ignorant.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:56 What happened was indulgences came up for sale.
00:06:57 --> 00:07:02 You could buy an indulgence to raise funds,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 and the reason why the church started to sell them
00:07:05 --> 00:07:10 is because they needed money to build St. Peter's Bastillica in Rome
00:07:10 --> 00:07:13 and many other building projects.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:17 And the easiest way was to sell indulgences,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:21 to get guilty people out of purgatory,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 relatives out of purgatory,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 myself out of purgatory,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 in order that I could go into heaven.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:31 And masses of money was raised.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 But the unsuspecting masses of people
00:07:34 --> 00:07:38 didn't know that purgatory nor indulgences
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 weren't in fact in the Bible,
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 let alone that it wasn't possible to buy someone into heaven.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 He said, back in the 1500s,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 the members of churches, unlike us today,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 did not have the Bible in their own language.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 You would walk into church as a German-speaking person in Luther's time,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 and everything would be done in Latin.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 And you would just sit there and watch.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 They couldn't read the Bible for themselves.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 The only authority on the way of salvation
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 was what they were told by the priests
00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 and what they were told by the church,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 what they were told was in the Bible.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 And it was a situation that got under the skin
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 of the German monk and the theologian Martin Luther.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:28 On the 31st of October, 1517,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:32 Martin Luther wrote to his bishop, Albert of Mainz,
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 protesting the sale of indulgences.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:40 He enclosed in his letter a copy of his disputation of Martin Luther
00:08:40 --> 00:08:44 on the power and efficacy of indulgences,
00:08:44 --> 00:08:48 which came to be known throughout history as the 1995 Thesis.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:54 As Sam said, it was nailed to the door of Castle Church Wittenberg
00:08:54 --> 00:08:59 so that all who could read could engage with Martin Luther's writing.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 This letter began the Reformation,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 which swept through Western Europe,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 saw the establishment of the Protestant church,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 and recaptured the heart,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:12 the very heart of the Christian message.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:20 Luther ultimately saw indulgences as a travesty of God's way of salvation,
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 which was one for us,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:28 He saw that this church tradition had grossly subverted
00:09:28 --> 00:09:31 what the Bible taught about getting right with God
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 and receiving eternal life.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:37 And so Luther and a whole bunch of other men and women
00:09:37 --> 00:09:42 were moved to put their livelihoods and their homes
00:09:42 --> 00:09:46 and their fortunes and their very lives on the line
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 to restore to the Christian church
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 the core teachings of the Christian faith
00:09:50 --> 00:09:56 so that the masses of people could have freedom in Christ,
00:09:57 --> 00:10:01 could know the joy, the joy of salvation,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 the Christian gospel.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 And so translated into English,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:13 the five assertions from the Reformers
00:10:13 --> 00:10:17 is that salvation is according to Scripture alone,
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 in Christ alone,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 by grace alone,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 through faith alone,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:27 all for the glory of God alone.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:31 And Martin Luther, when he was called to account,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:35 took his stand on the Bible.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 This was the key principle of the Protestant Reformation
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 and remains one of the striking differences
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 between the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Church
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 to this very day,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:52 that the final authority in all matters of faith and of life
00:10:52 --> 00:10:56 is found only in the written word of God.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:59 Only in the written word of God.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:04 Other sources and authorities of knowledge have their place,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 such as reason and experience of tradition,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:10 but the final, the overruling authority,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:15 belongs to God as he speaks to us through his word, the Bible.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:21 Now that's a claim that is just as challenging today,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:25 in 2017, as it was 500 years ago in 1517.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:28 You see, we exist in a culture that asserts
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 that there's no absolute truth
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 that must be understood,
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 that needs to be accepted,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 and certainly is not authority for everyone's life.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:41 Now, ironically, the culture that we exist in
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 that says there's no absolute truth
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 is a bit hypocritical,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:47 because the assertion that there is no absolute truth
00:11:47 --> 00:11:51 is in fact an absolute truth claim in and of itself.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:58 Our culture says that truth is what you make it.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 It's what seems right to you,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 and whatever truth is right for you
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 might not be right for someone else.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 So truth is up to the individual,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 which ultimately means follow your feelings.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 And therefore, what flows from that,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:14 when there's no absolute truth,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 and you make up truth,
00:12:16 --> 00:12:19 that means that truth and authority flow together.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 If I believe this is true for me,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 you've got no right to tell me it's not true for me.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 Truth and authority go together.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:36 And what I want us to come to see here,
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 to become awakened to,
00:12:39 --> 00:12:42 is the authority of God's word over our life
00:12:42 --> 00:12:47 does not lead to bondage as our culture claims.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 It leads to salvation.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 It leads to freedom.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 It leads to joy.
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 That's what biblical authority leads to.
00:12:58 --> 00:13:01 2 Timothy 3, 14, 15,
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 continuing what you have learned
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 and have become convinced of
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 because of those to whom you've learned it,
00:13:06 --> 00:13:09 and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures,
00:13:09 --> 00:13:14 which are able to make you wise for salvation
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 through faith in Christ Jesus.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 That's what the scriptures do.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:22 They lead you into salvation and joy and hope.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:27 We need to know that the God who defines all things
00:13:27 --> 00:13:29 and creates all things and rules all things,
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 has worked to save all things,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:32 has spoken.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 He's spoken.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 He has spoken loud.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 He's spoken clear.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 He's spoken with more authority.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 That every other voice we will hear
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 on YouTube and Facebook and everywhere else
00:13:44 --> 00:13:49 over every situation that we face in life.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 So let's just go for a bit of a journey there.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 I want to go back to Psalm 119.
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 Make the connection between God and truth,
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 and therefore what flows from that
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 is authority over our lives.
00:14:02 --> 00:14:07 That's Psalm 119 verse 155.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 Let me just go on a little bit of excursion here
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 just for a little bit,
00:14:12 --> 00:14:14 and I'm going to probably hit this point a little bit later.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 500 years ago, you go to church,
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 you don't get the Bible in your own language.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:20 You sat there and you observed.
00:14:20 --> 00:14:22 500 years later, we got in our own language.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:25 I think it's appalling that we would ever go to church
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 and not have the Bible in front of us opened.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 So please do that right now.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 Psalm 119.
00:14:32 --> 00:14:35 People died in order to get the Scriptures
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 in our hands right now
00:14:36 --> 00:14:39 so that we would understand God clearly speaking to us.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 If you have not got a Bible in your hand right now,
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 put your hand up,
00:14:43 --> 00:14:45 and our ushers will come to you
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 and they will get you a Bible in your hand right now.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 Okay, back on topic.
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 Psalm 119.
00:14:51 --> 00:15:21 Psalm 115.
00:15:21 --> 00:15:23 All your words are true.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 All your righteous laws are eternal.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 Notice those words are talking about,
00:15:31 --> 00:15:33 those sentences are talking about God communicating.
00:15:35 --> 00:15:38 Decrees, laws, statutes, words, precepts.
00:15:38 --> 00:15:42 Then it says in verse 160
00:15:42 --> 00:15:46 that when God speaks,
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 precepts, laws, decrees,
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 when he speaks,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:53 what he speaks is true,
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 it's eternal,
00:15:55 --> 00:15:57 it's righteous.
00:15:57 --> 00:16:01 And the word translated all
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 at the beginning there
00:16:02 --> 00:16:04 in verse 160
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 in the NIV
00:16:05 --> 00:16:07 literally means
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 head.
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 Means head.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 It could mean the head of a body,
00:16:13 --> 00:16:15 it could mean the head of a tribe,
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 it could mean the head of a river.
00:16:16 --> 00:16:20 And the word used here in verse 119
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 as head
00:16:21 --> 00:16:23 is the same word
00:16:23 --> 00:16:25 that's used in Exodus
00:16:25 --> 00:16:27 30 verse 12.
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 I'll read it to you.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 When you take a census
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 of the Israelites
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 to count them,
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 each one must pay
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 the Lord a ransom
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 for his life
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 at the time he is counted.
00:16:38 --> 00:16:40 It's also used in Numbers
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 chapter 1 verse 2.
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 Take a census
00:16:42 --> 00:16:45 of the whole Israelite community
00:16:45 --> 00:16:47 by their clans
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 and families.
00:16:49 --> 00:16:53 What Psalm 119 says
00:16:53 --> 00:16:55 is that if you took
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 a census
00:16:56 --> 00:17:00 of the word of God,
00:17:01 --> 00:17:04 the conclusion would be
00:17:04 --> 00:17:08 is that the sum total
00:17:08 --> 00:17:10 of the word of God,
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 the Bible
00:17:11 --> 00:17:13 is truth.
00:17:14 --> 00:17:14 The totality
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 of the Bible
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 is truth.
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 But notice
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 the second half
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 of verse 160.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:20 It says,
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 all your righteous laws
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 are eternal.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 So it's not just
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 the sum total
00:17:25 --> 00:17:27 which is truth.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:30 It's all the individual parts
00:17:30 --> 00:17:32 that are truth.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 The census would reveal
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 that all of it
00:17:34 --> 00:17:36 as well as the parts of it
00:17:36 --> 00:17:38 are all true.
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 It's truth.
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 So what it's saying here
00:17:42 --> 00:17:44 is that when God speaks,
00:17:44 --> 00:17:46 what he speaks
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 is truth.
00:17:49 --> 00:17:51 Truth is what he says.
00:17:51 --> 00:17:53 And the reason why
00:17:53 --> 00:17:55 God's word
00:17:55 --> 00:17:57 is ultimately truth
00:17:57 --> 00:17:59 and it's overruling
00:17:59 --> 00:18:02 and it has final authority
00:18:02 --> 00:18:04 is because God
00:18:04 --> 00:18:07 is ultimate reality.
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 that's the reason.
00:18:09 --> 00:18:11 God is absolute.
00:18:12 --> 00:18:13 There is nothing higher
00:18:13 --> 00:18:14 than God.
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 There is no one,
00:18:16 --> 00:18:16 no thing
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 equal with God.
00:18:17 --> 00:18:17 There is
00:18:17 --> 00:18:21 not another opinion
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 beside his.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:25 back in Exodus
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 when
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 at the burning bush
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 God
00:18:28 --> 00:18:30 said to Moses
00:18:30 --> 00:18:32 go to Egypt
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 and sort them out
00:18:33 --> 00:18:33 and
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 get my people
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 out of there.
00:18:37 --> 00:18:37 And God
00:18:37 --> 00:18:38 Moses said to God
00:18:38 --> 00:18:38 well
00:18:38 --> 00:18:40 if they ask me
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 who sent you
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 what should I say
00:18:42 --> 00:18:42 to them?
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 God said
00:18:44 --> 00:18:45 tell them
00:18:45 --> 00:18:46 I am.
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 And you go
00:18:50 --> 00:18:52 that's not helpful.
00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 You know
00:18:54 --> 00:18:55 someone rings up
