00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 Secondly, I noticed the noise never stopped.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:48 Thirdly, I remember not being able to sleep well because it was so bright at night.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:52 I was wondering who had left lights on in the house.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 Light pollution is a very real thing, and it's a real thing in Chatswood.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:03 It's not good for sleeping, but it is good if you want to go for a walk at night and
00:01:03 --> 00:01:04 you've forgotten your torch.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:12 The major downside is we miss something that is so glorious and spectacular.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:19 I have never experienced the wonder glittering night sky in Chatswood.

00:01:21 --> 00:01:24 In 13 years, never seen it here at all.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:32 You've got to go west to experience the wonder of the universe and to sense your smallness.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 I've never seen the Milky Way or a shooting star in Chatswood.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:44 Every light I see in the sky in Chatswood at night is on track to land at Sydney Airport.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:49 Or it's on flashing the top of a building of a crane or something like that.
00:01:50 --> 00:02:04 What makes the heavenly lights so bright is and so attractive is that it's set against the scene of the ink blackness of the sprawling universe.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 That's what makes them stand out and so glorious.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 The night, the brighter the stars, and it's the same with the gospel.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 It's the same with the core message of the Christian faith.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:28 Last week, Romans chapter 1, verses 16 and 17, we investigated the Apostle Paul's thesis in a nutshell about the Christian faith.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:58 Why is that so glorious and spectacular?
00:02:58 --> 00:03:02 Why is that such great news?
00:03:03 --> 00:03:09 Why is receiving God's righteousness through Jesus Christ the only way to have a right standing with our creator God?
00:03:10 --> 00:03:17 We get the answer to that in verses 18 through to chapter 3, verse 20.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:28 What we have here is a devastating critique of human nature.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:43 It is a dark picture of humanity that shows us why we cannot earn, deserve, or attain righteousness ourselves.
00:03:43 --> 00:04:03 And yet it is against this spiritual backdrop of blackest night that the light of the good news of the gospel shines even brighter for us.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:10 So you've got an outline that will come up on the screen.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 Three major points.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 I'm going to kick off with revealing righteous anger.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:18 At the end of last week's text, it's as Paul's summary.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:22 His gospel nutshell, if you like, the heart of Christianity.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 He says, he writes here,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:32 I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 First to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:40 For in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:46 A righteousness that is by faith from first to last.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:47 First to last.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:53 Now in the original language, verse 18 begins with the word for.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 That is, it's connected, deeply connected.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 It flows directly on from verse 17.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:08 The connection is showing us that the gospel is necessary.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:17 Not just simply to make us happy or in John Piper's words, to give us a ticket out of hell.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:27 It is necessary because we have a big, big problem that needs to be resolved.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:37 And Paul's confidence, joy, and passion for the good news is resting on the assumption
00:05:37 --> 00:05:50 that all human beings, apart from Jesus, are under the righteous, justified anger of their creator God.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:56 Without a clear understanding of God's righteous anger,
00:05:57 --> 00:06:03 then the gift of his righteousness to us in Jesus will never thrill us,
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 will never empower us, and it will never transform us.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:20 God's anger against human sin is a settled, fair, right, and a present reality.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:29 In verse 18, we are told that God's wrath is being revealed.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:36 It doesn't say that it will be revealed, but that it is being revealed.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 It's a reality now.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:44 And so it prompts two questions.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 The why question and the how question.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:52 Why is it being revealed and how is it being revealed?
00:06:53 --> 00:06:59 Verse 18 tells us that God is angry because of humanity's godlessness and wickedness.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:05 Godlessness is a word that summarizes, if you like,
00:07:05 --> 00:07:09 a disregard for God and a breaking of relationship with him.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:17 Wickedness is a word that summarizes disregard for people and breaking relationship with people.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:22 That is, it captures both our vertical and horizontal relationships.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:30 Mark chapter 12, verses 29 to 31 tells us the greatest commandment.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:34 It's to love God, love people, vertical and horizontal.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:43 Verses 19 and 20 says that the breaking of relationship with God and with people
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 is something that all of us are responsible for.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:52 Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 for since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities,
00:07:56 --> 00:08:00 his eternal power and his divine nature have been clearly seen,
00:08:01 --> 00:08:06 being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:15 So the beginning of verse 21 goes as far as saying that all human beings,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:21 everywhere and at all times, know God.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 They know God.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:32 God has made himself plain to them since and in the creation of the world.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:38 God reveals a God of eternal power, a being of divine nature,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:45 a God to whom we are utterly dependent and completely accountable.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:52 Now, creation doesn't reveal everything that we need to know about God.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 God is not.
00:08:53 --> 00:09:01 But it's not hard to conclude that if the universe is great,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:08 then there is something greater that is behind that universe.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:16 It philosophically does not work to hold to the view
00:09:16 --> 00:09:23 that there is a spectacular universe that happened by accident.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:30 It does not philosophically work to say that a God of order does not exist,
00:09:31 --> 00:09:38 but to point to scientific evidence at the same time.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:45 Scientific evidence works on the assumption of order and not chaos.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:52 But I'm not here to argue all those points.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 Verse 18 says that we suppress that truth.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:59 If we suppress that truth,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 we will never understand who we are
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 or why the world is as it is.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:11 And so Paul says we are without excuse.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:14 As verse 21 says,
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 every human knows God,
00:10:16 --> 00:10:20 but no human glorifies God or gives thanks to him.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 That is, God's issue with humanity
00:10:23 --> 00:10:27 is not so much that we're rude
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 and that we've got bad manners.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 You know, I'm really cranky with people
00:10:32 --> 00:10:36 because they forgot to say please and thank you and pardon me.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 It's not that.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:43 The issue is that we are glory stealers.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 We are glory stealers.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:49 We take what God has made
00:10:49 --> 00:10:53 and we pass it off as if it's our own.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 Ours.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:58 Which really is another way of saying
00:10:58 --> 00:11:02 that we don't acknowledge our dependence upon our creator
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 and we claim independence instead.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 We live under the illusion
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 that we call the shots
00:11:11 --> 00:11:14 and that we can decide what is right
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 and what is wrong.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 What's interesting in these verses
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 is what it says
00:11:21 --> 00:11:24 about how we practice
00:11:24 --> 00:11:27 this suppression of the knowledge of God.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 We push it down.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 We hold it down.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 We are people
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 made in the image of God
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 and we are made to worship God.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 And when we reject God,
00:11:39 --> 00:11:42 we don't by nature stop worshipping.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:46 We transfer our worship to another thing.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 That's what we do.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:51 We simply shift at the object of our worship.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 Have a look at verse 23.
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 They exchanged.
00:11:58 --> 00:12:00 It's a key word here in this text.
00:12:01 --> 00:12:04 Exchanged the glory of the immortal God
00:12:04 --> 00:12:08 for images made to look like a mortal human being
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 and birds and animals and reptiles.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 It's there again in verse 25.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:17 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 and worshipped and served,
00:12:20 --> 00:12:22 created things rather than the creator.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:27 So people are created for worship
00:12:27 --> 00:12:32 and if they don't worship their creator God,
00:12:32 --> 00:12:35 then they worship something else.
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 They don't stop worshipping.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 They just worship something else.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:42 There must be something which captures our attention,
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 which shapes our hope
00:12:45 --> 00:12:48 and in which we put our security.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:52 It becomes our centre of our being.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 This thing we must have
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 for our sense of validation
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 and for our worth
00:12:58 --> 00:13:01 and whatever it is, we serve it.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:03 You can generally tell what it is
00:13:03 --> 00:13:06 because when I kick it for you,
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 you get angry.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:12 When someone challenges it in any kind of way,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:15 your response is an angry response.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:19 We give ultimate affection
00:13:19 --> 00:13:22 to a created and a good thing
00:13:22 --> 00:13:25 rather than the God who alone
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 is worthy of ultimate affection
00:13:27 --> 00:13:29 and ultimate worship.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 Rather than worshipping the immortal,
00:13:33 --> 00:13:36 we worship what he has made.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 That's why he is angry
00:13:39 --> 00:13:42 against humanity.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:45 But Paul also explains
00:13:45 --> 00:13:48 how God's anger is being revealed
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 in the present here.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 Verse 24.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:56 Therefore, God gave them over
00:13:56 --> 00:13:59 in the sinful desires of their hearts.
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 The two words sinful desires there
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 in verse 24
00:14:03 --> 00:14:06 comes from a single word
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 in the original New Testament language
00:14:08 --> 00:14:11 which literally means an over desire.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 An over desire.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 That is,
00:14:15 --> 00:14:19 it means an all controlling drive
00:14:19 --> 00:14:21 and longing and passion.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:24 The main issue for us
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 is not so much
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 that we have desires
00:14:28 --> 00:14:31 for evil and bad things,
00:14:32 --> 00:14:34 but that we have over desires
00:14:34 --> 00:14:36 for created good things.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 Over desires.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 Controlling passions for those things.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 We turn good,
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 created things
00:14:43 --> 00:14:46 into ultimate God things.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:49 We go from good things
00:14:49 --> 00:14:49 to God things.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:51 We just take an O out
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 is what we do.
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 They go from being good things
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 to God things.
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 And those good things,
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 when they become God things,
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 turn into being evil things,
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 bad things,
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 destructive things.
00:15:02 --> 00:15:07 The worst thing that can happen to us
00:15:07 --> 00:15:10 is to be given
00:15:10 --> 00:15:13 what our hearts desire
00:15:13 --> 00:15:17 if it's not God.
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 As Oscar Wilde,
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 not a Christian himself,
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 summed it up well,
00:15:23 --> 00:15:25 when the gods wish to punish us,
00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 they answer our prayers.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 They answer our prayers.
00:15:30 --> 00:15:33 God's judgment on godlessness
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 and wickedness
00:15:34 --> 00:15:37 is to give us
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 what we want.
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 And that ultimately
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 is the picture of hell.
00:15:45 --> 00:15:47 Every person who will be there
00:15:47 --> 00:15:49 will want to be there.
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 It's what we have chosen
00:15:52 --> 00:15:52 for ourselves.
00:15:52 --> 00:15:57 Since our hearts
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 were made to be centered
00:15:58 --> 00:15:58 on God
00:15:58 --> 00:16:01 and since he is our creator
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 and our provider,
00:16:02 --> 00:16:04 the provider of our satisfaction
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 and our significance
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 and our identity,
00:16:06 --> 00:16:08 every alternative
00:16:08 --> 00:16:10 that we set our hearts on
00:16:10 --> 00:16:13 ultimately will not satisfy us.

00:16:15 --> 00:16:17 to whatever it is

00:16:25 --> 00:16:27 because they are not God
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 and they will control us
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 because they are not God.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:31 They will never satisfy us.

00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 They are less than us
