Reverent wrestling with suffering

00:00:00 --> 00:00:07 One of my responsibilities as a parent is to raise my children into wise adults.
00:00:08 --> 00:00:12 And by that I don't mean experienced and educated adults.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:14 I mean wise adults.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:17 We are told in Proverbs, the beginning of wisdom,
00:00:18 --> 00:00:22 the very first foundation of wisdom is in fact the fear of the Lord.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:31 And so wisdom is not a collection of knowledge and experience per se.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 And it's not a collection of pithy sayings or abstract thoughts.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:38 It is in fact relational.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:40 It's about a relationship.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:45 To grow in wisdom is to grow in relationship with our Lord
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 through all the ups and downs of our lives,
00:00:48 --> 00:00:50 in all the ups and downs of our daily experiences.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:55 And so my responsibility is to teach my children a knowledge of God.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 Not that they might have a knowledge of the Bible,
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 but in fact that they might have God.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 They might know God and that they might fear Him
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 so that they don't have to fear Him.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:16 A big part of that teaching is me being a wise parent day by day.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:21 That is that they see me fearing the Lord day by day.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:26 And one of my responsibilities as your pastor is to do the same thing.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:29 To preach and to pray and to live in such a way
00:01:29 --> 00:01:34 that you are prepared in mind and heart to grow in relational wisdom,
00:01:34 --> 00:01:39 especially in the day of calamity, the day of disaster.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 The day that the biopsy test comes back positive.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 The day that the police knock at the door to break the news of a fatal accident.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 The day that you discover a terrible secret in a relationship.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:59 These are the days that can be the start of unimaginable grieving and suffering.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:06 And so my job is to prepare my children and you for those days
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 so that instead of cursing God,
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 you would in fact bow humbly,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:19 worshipping Him and blessing Him as your sovereign and merciful Father.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 And I don't mean, when I say that,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:27 a stiff, upper lip, cavalier attitude.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 Where you are resting on your own resources,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:37 I mean a reverent and trusting worship of God.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:43 And so this book of Job, as we begin in this search of wisdom,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:47 takes us to the life of a man who loses everything.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 As we just heard just then,
00:02:49 --> 00:02:53 Job's possessions, his livelihood, his children and his health
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 are ripped away from him in tragic circumstances.
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 And even what he has left,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 his wife and his mates,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 turn out to be no help at all.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:09 Job enters into crippling, mind-numbing anguish.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 And on one level, you could say that the book of Job
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 is all about suffering.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 It does offer certain insights into why bad things happen.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 But I want to suggest to you that it is fundamentally
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 so much more than about suffering.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 Because although there are a few insights into the issue of suffering,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 the central idea of the book is not why suffering occurs.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 The reason I say that is because it's no mystery at all to the reader
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 why suffering occurs.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 We know the answer to that by the end of chapter 1.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 The real mystery and the tension of the book
00:03:47 --> 00:03:52 is not why suffering happens or why Job suffers,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:57 but how he will behave towards God in his suffering.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 Will Job curse God as Satan predicts?
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 Or will Job continue to trust God?
00:04:06 --> 00:04:12 And this is the tension that draws us on as we read through the book.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 Because it appears right at the very first couple of chapters
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 that Job does well.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 And then you start reading chapter 3 onwards.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 And it appears that Job's not doing so well.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:32 The central theme is the nature of wisdom and where it can be found.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:36 And the way it tackles that issue of the nature of wisdom
00:04:36 --> 00:04:43 is by creating a conflict between two different views of wisdom.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:50 One is the rigid connection between actions and consequences.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 For instance, if you are lazy, you'll be poor.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 If you smoke, you'll get lung cancer.
00:04:56 --> 00:05:02 And if you have a rigid connection between actions and consequences,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 then what happens is when you see the consequence,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:08 you start reading the consequences back into actions.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 The person's got lung cancer.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 Must have been a smoker.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 That person's poor.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 Clearly they're lazy.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:22 That is, in this idea of wisdom,
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 the world is ordered
00:05:24 --> 00:05:27 and wisdom is about knowing the order.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:32 Wisdom is about understanding the set rules
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 and principles of order in the world.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 Or as the people on the video said,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:42 wisdom's about knowledge from experience.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 That's what that sort of wisdom is.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 Knowledge from experience.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 I've experienced this in the world
00:05:49 --> 00:05:53 and that's what wisdom is understanding
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 as you grow older,
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 understanding what the order is.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:03 Job's three friends are working with that kind of framework.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:06 Because all this bad stuff is happening to Job,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 it must be because he's done something really bad.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 That is their experience.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 And that is only partly right.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 What Job helps us to see,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 another idea of wisdom on this side,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:29 is that life is rarely, if ever, that straightforward.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:35 And that is the limitation over here of human wisdom.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 My experience.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 That's the limitation of human wisdom.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 And Job helps us to see that biblical wisdom
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 is not so rigid.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 It helps us to see that the order of our universe
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 is not always there for us to see.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:54 We can't always see the order of the universe.
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 And so therefore our experience is limited.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 And it helps us to see that there is a God
00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 who stands above the order
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 and knows the order
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 and is not restricted to the order.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 And therefore biblical wisdom is being in relationship
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 with that God.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:17 Which goes way beyond human wisdom.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:22 That's the clash as we go throughout this book.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 It is fundamentally about knowing and trusting the God
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 who knows and is sovereign and is good.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:34 And this need for relational wisdom is especially crucial
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 when life is tough.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 How do we grow in wisdom
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 when the world isn't as we think it ought to be?
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 And so in that respect
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 the book of Job
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 is kind of like a first aid manual.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 You see a first aid manual
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 doesn't normally go into great detail
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 about all the different ways
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 that you can break an arm.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 It's more concerned about
00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 how do you fix the arm when it's broken.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:05 So Job doesn't give us an exhaustive list
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 of why suffering happens.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 He's more concerned to explain
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 how to behave towards God
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 when suffering happens.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 And so let's have a look at it there.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 Get your sheets open up.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 Job 1 and 2.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 In verses 1 to 6 of chapter 1
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 we get a glimpse of what Job is like.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 He is unquestionably godly.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 Three times in chapters 1 and 2
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 we are told that Job
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 was a blameless and an upright man.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 The book begins with this declaration
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 in verse 1.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 In the land of Uz
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 there lived a man whose name was Job
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 and this man was blameless and upright.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 And then if you go down to verse 8
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 we are told what it means
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 to be blameless and upright.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 A man who fears God
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 and shuns evil.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 Which is the definition of wisdom.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 According to Proverbs chapter 1.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 To be blameless and upright
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 means to fear God and shun evil.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 We are supposed to see Job
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 as the model of a righteous
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 and a wise man.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 Not that he was perfect or sinless.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 Not saying that for a moment.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 All the contributors in this book
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 Job and his three mates
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 particularly his four mates
00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 are convinced that all people are sinful.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 And in fact Job's first act
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 in the book
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 is in fact to offer sacrifices
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 for sin.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 So he's not sinless here.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 We're not saying that at all.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 We're meant to see Job
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 as an extremely well-to-do man.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 He is upright
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 and he is blameless.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 He's the complete man.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:44 In fact it says
00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 there is no one like him
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 among all the people of the east.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 He is a head and shoulders
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 above everyone.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:54 Everything
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 is
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 as we would want it to be.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 A good man
00:10:01 --> 00:10:04 enjoying a good life.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 Actions are consequences.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:12 We might even say
00:10:12 --> 00:10:14 that Job has worked hard
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 on his godliness
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 and he's therefore
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 getting the rewards
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 from God
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 for that.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 And so imagine the shock
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 within the space
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 of two days
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 all your children
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 are killed
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 you lose your job
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 your wife thinks you're mad
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 all your employees
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 are murdered
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 your superannuation
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 nest egg
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 is stolen
00:10:38 --> 00:10:41 and just to top it all off
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 you now have no roof
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 over your head
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 because it probably
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 doesn't matter anyway
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 you've been admitted
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 to hospital
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 because from the top
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 of your head
00:10:49 --> 00:10:49 to the soles
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 of your feet
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 you are covered
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 in gaping sores
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 which are oozing pus.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 Oh one more thing
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 while you're there
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 lying in hospital
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 wondering about
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 how you're going to
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 pay the medical bills
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 and the funeral
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 for your kids
00:11:04 --> 00:11:07 your long time
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 Christian mates
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 come in
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and tell you
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 that the events
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 of the past two days
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 are all your fault
00:11:13 --> 00:11:16 as you sit there
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 with a piece of brick
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 scraping your sores
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 it's all your fault
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 Job
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 if it wasn't for you
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 Job
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 none of this
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 would happen
00:11:27 --> 00:11:31 in the space
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 of two days
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 Job
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 goes from prosperity
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 to poverty
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 from great comfort

00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 man in the east
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 to sitting on a rubbish tip
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 scraping
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 his body
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 with a broken piece
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 of pottery
00:11:46 --> 00:11:49 and one of the worst
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 things for Job
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 is that
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 why
00:11:53 --> 00:11:58 you see
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 Job
00:11:59 --> 00:11:59 doesn't have
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 the full picture
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 Job
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 does not know
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 what we know
00:12:03 --> 00:12:08 we get a glimpse
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 into the meeting
