00:00:22 --> 00:00:27 you have felt the urge to turn your life around.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 Change your plans, your school, your jobs, your friendship group.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 You break the lease.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:36 You end a relationship.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 You upend your routines.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 You lock yourself out of your apps on your phone.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 Or you sell a guitar.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:50 Sometimes you can.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:52 Sometimes you must.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:56 Or you can't and you wish you could.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 Turn your life around.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 Have you ever said out loud,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:07 I have to turn my life around?
00:01:10 --> 00:01:15 At our best, we try and live a life that leads down the path that suits our needs,
00:01:15 --> 00:01:20 our joys, our comforts, even suits our loved ones.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:29 But the message of the Bible is that God needs to turn your life around so that you may truly live.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:33 Can God really do that?
00:01:34 --> 00:01:35 Can God turn your life around?
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 And would it really matter if you did?
00:01:39 --> 00:01:43 My name is Nick.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 I'm a discipleship pastor here at St. Paul's.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:47 I'm really glad you're here.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:51 And I'm really glad that today we're in Jonah chapter 3.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:56 At the end of chapter 2, we land with Jonah on the beach.
00:01:57 --> 00:01:59 Spat out of a fish.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:00 Stinking of stomach.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:02 Squinting in the sun.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 Somehow still alive.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 God has relented from destroying him and saved him.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 So what should God have done next?
00:02:16 --> 00:02:18 Is he going to scold Jonah like an angry parent?
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 Is he going to give him a new set of stricter rules to live by?
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 Or is he going to put a pressure on him with a threat?
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 That, ah, this is your last chance.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:30 No.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:37 Instead, Michelle just read that God renews his partnership with his prophet.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 Jonah got a clean slate as if he'd never run away at all.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:47 The book of Jonah could start chapter 3, verse 1.
00:02:53 --> 00:03:02 Jonah was tumbled in the water, taste tested by a fish, turned back to God and all by grace.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:08 God really can turn a life around in dramatic fashion.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:14 In chapter 3, God reset his expectations of Jonah.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:21 He still had to go to Nineveh and, like God says at the beginning of Jonah, preach against it for their wickedness.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 But this time, Jonah obeyed.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 What would Nineveh do in response to God's message?
00:03:30 --> 00:03:34 Would they ignore Jonah or would they turn to God and repent?
00:03:36 --> 00:03:37 Repent.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:47 To turn from living life your old way and to turn toward God is called repentance.
00:03:47 --> 00:04:03 Jonah 3 is going to show you Nineveh's response as an example of our need for repentance, the nature of repentance, and the hope of repentance.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 All people need to God.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 And if you turn to him, he will turn your life around.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 There is assurance available.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 Assurance for the repentant.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:21 Because God is gracious and merciful to all people.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:28 Now, there was a great need for repentance where Jonah was sent.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:35 I shared three weeks ago when we started the book of Jonah that Nineveh was known for its brutality.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:40 Even their allies were allies because they feared them.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:47 According to historians, there was even more going on here in Nineveh at the time.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:50 More going on than usual.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 There had been an ominous solar eclipse.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 There had been earthquakes.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 There had been political uprisings.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:09 And there was conflict everywhere between those under the thumb of royal rule and those wanting to break that thumb.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:16 Nineveh couldn't stay a superpower unless that changed.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:24 It was as if God had prepared the ground ready for Jonah's message to take root.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:29 Jonah walked for a whole day, as we've read.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 Whole day into this vast city.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 Still hadn't got to the middle of it.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 And he would have seen everywhere a desperate need for change.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:47 So as Jonah spoke, it only took five words in his language.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 Eight words in English.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:55 Eight words to convince people that they needed to turn their life around.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 Jonah proclaimed in verse 4,
00:05:58 --> 00:06:07 The Ninevites believed God.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:15 News of coming destruction led to belief in the God who had sent that message.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:19 There's no mention here of Jonah's preaching style.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 His hairdo.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 His teaching technique.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 His charisma.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 Maybe how he smelt.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:31 Or anything else that can make his message more listenable.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 Or more relatable.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 Or more fearfully obeyable.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:42 Instead, there's simply a heart response.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 A heart response to the word of God that led to belief.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:52 Nineveh's belief was not like belief light.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 It was weighty.
00:06:55 --> 00:07:03 It's the same Hebrew word for believed used when Israel saw the Red Sea crash down and drown Pharaoh's army.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:07 Then Israel believed.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 Same word.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:10 In God.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:14 On the evidence of God's deliverance.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:21 But this time, just God's few words bring belief.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:27 That word moved from the street into homes.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 From the lowly to the rich.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 From the peasant to the palace and all the way to the king.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 The king had riches.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 He had his reputation.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 And the protection of his army.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:48 But those same eight words broke his trust in his kingdom's strength.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 And he, too, believed.
00:07:55 --> 00:08:00 Nineveh had armies that annihilated entire peoples.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 Like whole cities off the face of the earth.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:11 They could have easily imagined how something like that would happen to them if there was a greater army out there.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 But here they fear something greater.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 They fear a God.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:19 Look at verse 8.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:24 Let everyone call urgently on God.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:40 When the king believed, he believed because he saw they, the whole nation and him, had a moral debt to God for their evil and their violence.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:45 And that debt had brought upon them a spiritual consequence.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 That of judgment.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:52 God's word hit bullseye in their heart.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:00 Did any of you hear Michelle read that passage this morning?
00:09:00 --> 00:09:04 Or have you ever read Jonah before and heard about Nineveh's belief?
00:09:05 --> 00:09:10 And think, what Jonah said, those eight words, why does that?
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 How is that enough?
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 How is that enough?
00:09:15 --> 00:09:25 Surely Jonah then went on a preaching tour and was on TV on the morning show and got to speak in the universities to all the intellectuals.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:29 No, just five words in Hebrew.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 How is that enough?
00:09:34 --> 00:09:38 How isn't it like Pharaoh, when Moses spoke to him,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:42 talked about God's coming judgment upon Egypt,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:46 unless they let God's people go?
00:09:47 --> 00:09:51 Pharaoh said no, over and over and over and over again.
00:09:55 --> 00:10:00 The answer is that it takes the power of God
00:10:00 --> 00:10:04 for our need of repentance to seem reasonable,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 beyond logic and circumstance.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:14 An early church leader called Paul talked about it like this.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:17 Opponents must be gently instructed
00:10:17 --> 00:10:21 in the hope that God will grant them repentance,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:25 leading them to a knowledge of the truth.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:30 Notice that God initiates repentance
00:10:30 --> 00:10:33 before we know we need it.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 Through his word,
00:10:36 --> 00:10:40 God powerfully leads us to a gift.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 A gift is seeing our need
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 to return to him.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 Nineveh's believing king
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 commanded
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 that his people turn away
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 from the Assyrian way of life,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 their evil ways
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 and their violence
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 is his summary of that.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 They are turning
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 from their sin.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:06 Sin is anything done
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 against God's will
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and order.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 God revealed to Nineveh
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 through his word to them
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 that their evil hearts
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 and violent hands
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 were sinful.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 Nineveh surrendered
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 because God revealed
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 their sin against him
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 and that their judgment day
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 was a month away.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 The nature of repentance
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 is demonstrated here
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 in what the king
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 then led his people
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 to do about their sin.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 First,
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 he joined in
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 with his people.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 Verse 6,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 when Jonah's warning
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 reached the king of Nineveh,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 he rose from his throne,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 took off his royal robes,
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 covered himself
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 with sackcloth
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 and sat down
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 in the dust.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 The kings of Nineveh
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 were often given
00:12:05 --> 00:12:08 these extra kingly titles.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 You think king
00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 might be the top
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 but then there's
00:12:12 --> 00:12:15 king of the universe
00:12:15 --> 00:12:18 or king of the four corners
00:12:18 --> 00:12:18 of the world.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:21 But here,
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 Nineveh's king
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 stood down
00:12:24 --> 00:12:24 from his throne,
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 removed all signs
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 of his royalty
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 and joined his nation
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 mourning in the dust
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 in awfully itchy sackcloth.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 It's such a humanizing moment.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:41 Imagine seeing that throne room
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 empty,
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 all the fancy clothes
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 thrown on the floor
00:12:45 --> 00:12:48 and then going outside
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 and seeing all the people
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 together in the street.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 There was nobody
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 in Nineveh
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 more or less
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 in need
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 of repentance
00:13:01 --> 00:13:03 and no difference
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 in the nature
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 of their repentance.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:07 All people
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 must repent
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 the same
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 by turning to the grace
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 and mercy
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 of God.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 Once the king
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 had joined his people
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 in the dust,
00:13:21 --> 00:13:26 he said,
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 by the decree
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 of the kings
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 and nobles,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 do not let animals,
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 herds or flocks
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 taste anything.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 Do not let them
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 eat or drink
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 but let people
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 and animals
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 be covered in sackcloth.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 Let everyone
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 call urgently on God.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 Let them give up
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 their evil ways
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 and their violence.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 The three things
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 that they did,
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 they're refusing
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 food and water,
00:13:49 --> 00:13:49 they're mourning
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 outwardly
00:13:51 --> 00:13:51 and their
00:13:51 --> 00:13:53 calling out
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 to God
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 reveal
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 the nature
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 of repentance.
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 Their fasting
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 created
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 inner hunger
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 and thirst.
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 They replaced
00:14:07 --> 00:14:09 their inner
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 evil
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 with inner
00:14:11 --> 00:14:11 pains,
00:14:13 --> 00:14:13 refusing to
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 fuel that
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 evil within.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 Fasting
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 shows their
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 desire to
00:14:19 --> 00:14:19 turn away
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 from their
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 sinfulness.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 Their mourning
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 in sackcloth
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 and dust
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 shows that
00:14:27 --> 00:14:27 they had
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 surrendered
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 their outward
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 actions
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 and comforts.
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 They chose
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 to cause
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 external pains
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 to themselves,
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 bowing down
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 their violent
00:14:39 --> 00:14:39 hands.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 And this
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 shows their
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 desire to
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 turn away
00:14:42 --> 00:14:42 from their
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 sinful ways.
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 repentance.
00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 And then
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 the king
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 commanded
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 prayer
00:14:49 --> 00:14:51 to direct
00:14:51 --> 00:14:51 their
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 repentance.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 He commanded
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 they pray
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 urgently to
00:14:55 --> 00:14:55 God,
00:14:56 --> 00:14:56 that they
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 call out
00:14:57 --> 00:14:57 to him
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 with emotion
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 and put
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 into words
00:15:01 --> 00:15:01 what their
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 fasting and
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 mourning
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 signified,
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 their commitment
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 to turn
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 from their
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 sin
00:15:08 --> 00:15:10 and to
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 plead with
00:15:11 --> 00:15:11 God for
00:15:11 --> 00:15:13 mercy that
00:15:13 --> 00:15:13 he might
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 relent.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 For,
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 verse 9,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 who knows?
00:15:18 --> 00:15:22 God may
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 yet relent
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 and with
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 compassion
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 turn from
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 his fierce
00:15:26 --> 00:15:26 anger so
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 we will
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 not perish.
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 Nineveh's
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 need
00:15:32 --> 00:15:34 for repentance
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 came from
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 a new
00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 belief in
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 God
00:15:37 --> 00:15:39 and in
00:15:39 --> 00:15:39 his right
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 judgment of
00:15:40 --> 00:15:40 them through
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 his word.
00:15:42 --> 00:15:42 And the
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 nature of
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 their repentance
00:15:44 --> 00:15:46 was the same
00:15:46 --> 00:15:46 for all.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:47 It was a
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 turning to
00:15:48 --> 00:15:48 God
00:15:48 --> 00:15:48 from their
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 own way
00:15:49 --> 00:15:49 of life
00:15:49 --> 00:15:51 inwardly
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 and outwardly
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 expressed in
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 prayer that
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 was urgent,
00:15:55 --> 00:15:55 honest,
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 exhaustive,
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 pleading for
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 mercy for
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 their sin.
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 Those eight
00:16:03 --> 00:16:03 words from
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 Jonah had
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 no hope.
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 But the
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 king had
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 found hope
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 in them
00:16:11 --> 00:16:13 that God
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 might
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 relent.
00:16:16 --> 00:16:16 But it's
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 only a hope
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 as strong
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 as,
00:16:19 --> 00:16:19 who knows?
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 But it
00:16:23 --> 00:16:23 was a
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 hope in
00:16:24 --> 00:16:24 a merciful
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 God.
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 For here's
00:16:27 --> 00:16:27 how God
00:16:27 --> 00:16:29 received their
00:16:29 --> 00:16:29 repentance
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 in verse
00:16:30 --> 00:16:30 10.
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 When God
00:16:33 --> 00:16:33 saw what
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 they did
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 and how
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 they had
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 turned from
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 their evil
00:16:36 --> 00:16:36 ways,
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 he relented
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 and did not
00:16:39 --> 00:16:39 bring on
00:16:39 --> 00:16:39 them the
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 destruction
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 that he had
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 threatened.
00:16:42 --> 00:16:45 God
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 heard their
00:16:46 --> 00:16:46 cries,
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 he saw
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 them turn
00:16:49 --> 00:16:51 and he
00:16:51 --> 00:16:51 relented.
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 God
00:16:54 --> 00:16:54 reveals his
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 nature
00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 here.
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 He is
00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 merciful.
00:17:00 --> 00:17:00 Nothing
00:17:00 --> 00:17:00 Nineveh had
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 done had
00:17:01 --> 00:17:01 paid for
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 their sin.
00:17:04 --> 00:17:04 When
00:17:04 --> 00:17:04 Nineveh
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 turned to
