00:00:14 --> 00:00:17 pointed out as Bethlehem, God's promised land,
00:00:18 --> 00:00:19 meaning the house of bread,
00:00:20 --> 00:00:23 suffered famine because they disobeyed God.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:26 A family went to Moab.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 They were planning to stay there for only a short while.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 But ended up staying for 10 years
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 with their husband and the two sons died.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 Naomi, with her daughter-in-law, Ruth,
00:00:39 --> 00:00:41 had now come back to Bethlehem
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 to be a refugee in her own country.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 They came back for a better life,
00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 looking for a place where they can have security,
00:00:52 --> 00:00:53 sympathy, and support.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 They found out that God knew they needed more than that,
00:00:58 --> 00:01:01 more than just a temporary refuge,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:05 and have a permanent refuge prepared for them in Boax.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 God also knew what we need in our life
00:01:09 --> 00:01:14 and has given us Jesus as a permanent refuge for us.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:18 Please have your Bible open to Ruth chapter 2.

00:01:25 --> 00:01:30 which is the refugees, the rich man, and the refuge.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 Naomi and Ruth came back to Bethlehem.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 The whole town was stirred because of them.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 The people welcomed them with a homecoming party,
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 and the next day, Ruth said to Naomi in verse 2,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 Let me go to the field and pick up the leftovers.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 Leftover grain behind anyone whose eyes I find favor.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 I wonder where she got those ideas from,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 because she was referring to a system that God has set up
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 to take care of all people in Leviticus,
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 a system where during harvest,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 the harvester is not to go back to the field again.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:18 They are to leave leftovers for the poor and the foreigner.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 Maybe it was during the welcoming party
00:02:22 --> 00:02:23 that they had talked about it.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:26 Here and there is a system,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:30 but not confident about how it worked
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 and not sure it was true or not.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 What would be the best action that Ruth can take?
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 She got up and went out to try to find the answers.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:49 Last week, we saw Ruth's faithfulness shown through her loyalty to Naomi.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 This week, we will see a few more qualities of Ruth's faith.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 Firstly, she has a tried and tested faith.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:03 Faith is being sure of what we hope for
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 and certain of what we do not see.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:10 Ruth's faith is a willingness to take a step into the unknown,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:14 even into what is seemingly dangerous and futile.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:21 Ruth could have been harmed, as Naomi later told us.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 But she went.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:24 Based on what she heard,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 Naomi did the same last week in Chapter 1,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:30 heading back to Bethlehem,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 based on hearing some good news.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:39 Most refugees also left because of some good news.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 They went to a foreign place,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:43 hoping for a better life,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 somewhat wild thing for their lives.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 Based on the information about what God had promised all people,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 Ruth went out looking for a way to sustain herself and Naomi.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 Had you stepped out into the unknown,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 into uncertainty, hoping for a better life?
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 What was the promise that you were holding on to
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 or trying to test out?
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 How do you feel each step of the way?
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 Let's see what happened to Ruth.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 She went to a field,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:26 and that very first field belongs to her relative, Boax.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 She asked the overseer to let her glean
00:04:29 --> 00:04:33 and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 And they let her.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:38 As she said to Naomi,
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 she asked to follow along with the harvester.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 The system that God had set up
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 was for the poor and foreigner
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 to wait until the harvester finished for the day,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 then they can pick up the leftovers.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:55 But she seems to be doing all she can do
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 to get to the best position,
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 not waiting for the end of the day.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 Maybe her survival instinct kicks in.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 I believe trying to get to the best position
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 is why so many refugees and their children
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 do better in life in a new country.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 They knew what it means to survive,
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 and they were willing to try.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 They were willing to ask questions
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 that seem to be opportunistic
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 or even offensive sometimes.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 If you want to be safe
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 or stay alive,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:32 physically,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:35 but more importantly spiritually,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 we need to be sure
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 that we are on the right way
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 and the best way that we can get there
00:05:41 --> 00:05:44 and to ask questions and investigate.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 God did not just put her
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 in the right field at the first try.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 God put her in the best field,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:57 experiencing his full kindness.
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 Boaz allowed her to stay
00:05:59 --> 00:06:03 and get enough to take care of herself and Naomi.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 He did not rebuild the overseers
00:06:06 --> 00:06:10 and stop her from falling behind the harvester.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 Instead, he had a conversation with her
00:06:13 --> 00:06:16 that offered more than food for survival.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 He offered what a refugee would want,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:21 security,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 a chance to improve herself,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 recognition and approval,
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 and most importantly, a refuge.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 God knows we need those things,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 and he used Boaz
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 to give them to Ruth.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 In verse 10,
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 at this,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 she bowed down with her face to the ground.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:45 She asked him,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 why have I found such favor in your eyes
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 that you notice me,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:50 a foreigner?
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 He explained it was because
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 of the great things you had done for Naomi.
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 He finished by saying in verse 12,
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 may the Lord repay you
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 for what you have done.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 may you be richly rewarded by the Lord,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 the God of Israel,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 under whose wings
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 you have come to take refuge.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 Then she replied,
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 saying in verse 13,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 may I continue to find favor
00:07:18 --> 00:07:18 in your eyes,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 my Lord.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 You have put me at ease
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24 by speaking kindly to your servant,
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 though I do not have the standing
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 of your servants.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:32 He just gave her a high praise.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 Instead of thinking of how great
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 and worthy she is,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 not patting her on back
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 for how much she had sacrificed for Naomi,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 Ruth acknowledged
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 instead that
00:07:44 --> 00:07:44 Boaz
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 and the God of Israel
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 were far more important
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 and far more significant.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 That brings me
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 to the second quality
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 that I want to highlight,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 is Ruth has a humble
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 and realistic faith.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 She was humble
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 because she acknowledged
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 that there was someone
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 more significant
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 than herself.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 Ruth accepted her status
00:08:10 --> 00:08:10 as a foreigner
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 or a servant
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 who needed mercy
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 from others.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 No matter how
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 great her achievement was,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 she knew
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 how she stands
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 with others
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 and with God,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 the ultimate provider.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 Ruth has an
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 other-centered heart
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 that keeps her humble.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 Knowing what she did
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 for her mother-in-law
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 was approved
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 by everyone,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 but approval
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 is not worth
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 her motivation.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 She did it
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 out of deep concern
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 and deep care
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 for Naomi.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 And her faith
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 was realistic
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 because Ruth
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 gave Naomi
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 the leftover
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 after she had
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 eaten enough.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 She did not
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 let herself
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 go hungry
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 and unable to work.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 She ate as much
00:09:05 --> 00:09:05 as she needed
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 to keep working.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 And at the end
00:09:08 --> 00:09:08 of the day,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 she collected
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 a ether,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:11 which is
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 13 kilograms
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 of grain.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 Ruth went out
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 to confirm
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 whether what she
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 heard about God
00:09:19 --> 00:09:19 was real.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 She came back
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 with food
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 and a promise
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 from Boax.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 God gave her

00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 substantial
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 and tangible
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 to hold on to
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 when she set out
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 to find out

00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 said about God
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 was real.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 God gave her
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 certainty
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 in things
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 that she could
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 not see,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 not just
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 for herself.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:44 God guided
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 Ruth to
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 experience
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 his blessing
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 and through
00:09:48 --> 00:09:48 her
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 brought his
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 blessing
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 to Naomi.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 Often,
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 when someone
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 stepped out
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 in faith,
00:09:57 --> 00:09:57 it would end
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 up not just
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 that person
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 got to
00:10:00 --> 00:10:00 experience
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 the greatness
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 of God.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 they would
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 bring blessing
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 to those
00:10:05 --> 00:10:05 that needed
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 the reassurance
00:10:07 --> 00:10:07 from God
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 more than
00:10:08 --> 00:10:08 them.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 As Ruth
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 went out,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 she got to
00:10:13 --> 00:10:13 experience
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 God's word
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 come true
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 because God
00:10:16 --> 00:10:16 put her
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 where she
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 needed to
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 be.

00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 other refugees?

00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 refugee in the
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 story was

00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 Back in
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 verse 2,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 when she
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 told Ruth,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:29 go ahead,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 my daughter.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 did she
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 intend to
00:10:32 --> 00:10:32 join her?
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 We could
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 not be
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 sure of
00:10:36 --> 00:10:36 the reason
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 or the
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 reason why
