00:00:04 --> 00:00:07 It's great to see you in the new year.
00:00:08 --> 00:00:11 And one of the things that I asked on Facebook,
00:00:12 --> 00:00:14 I'm sure some of you are my Facebook friends.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 I'm happy to add you if you're not.
00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 But one of the questions I asked on Friday is,
00:00:19 --> 00:00:21 what do people fear?
00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 And some people commented on my wall.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 And I got a few responses.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:31 Basically, there are a few types of things that people fear.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:37 Some fears basically have no basis for these fears.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 Some people fear that we might lose the ashes.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:40 It's not going to happen.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 And some people, but there are some more serious fears.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 The word fear can mean frightened.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:53 So some of the things that people fear are natural disasters like cyclones
00:00:53 --> 00:01:00 or something that's man-made or caused by people like terrorism and wars.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 But fear can also mean worry and anxieties.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:10 And that type of fear is actually even worse for us
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 because if you're frightened of something,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:14 if you have a spider, you just get shocked.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:18 But if there's an anxiety, it gnaws at you.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 This thing keeps you thinking at night.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:26 And there's even a new acronym that has come out.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:27 F-O-M-O.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 I'm not sure how to pronounce it because I'm getting old now.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:31 Is it FOMO?
00:01:31 --> 00:01:31 I'm not sure.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:33 It is.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:33 Good.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:35 So what does that stand for?
00:01:36 --> 00:01:37 Fear of missing out.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:38 That's right.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:41 This is something that people...
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 If you don't know what that means, you can look it up on Wikipedia.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:45 I did as well.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 So it came up in 2004.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:52 It originally meant that people,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 when they see what's happening on Facebook or other social media sites,
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 they fear that they're missing out on something.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:02 But I think this is something that's true of all of us.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 This is the society that we live in.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 In fact, this is the fear that consumes us.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 This is the fear that we have at the start of the creation.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:14 The serpent said,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 don't you want to taste this fruit of good and evil?
00:02:19 --> 00:02:20 Basically asking us,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 you might miss out on that.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 And this is true of all stages of life.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:26 In our youth,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 we might just think that we might...
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 If we don't do the things that our friends do,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:32 we are missing out.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 If you are single,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:38 you might see that you might miss out on a relationship.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 So you might date a non-Christian or drift into pornography.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 And if you are working,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 you might see that you don't get to tick off your bucket list.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 I want to go to these places.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 I want to travel.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:54 I want to have all these experiences.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 I want to go to that restaurant.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 At work,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 we might plow in many countless hours
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 because we fear that we don't get a promotion.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 When colleagues participate in office politics,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 we might fear that we don't get a promotion
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 because we are not hanging in the right circles
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 or saying different things to get ahead.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 Once you are married,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 you might fear that your kids might miss out.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:25 Therefore,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 you try to give them the best start in life possible.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:30 Enroll them in different classes
00:03:30 --> 00:03:32 or just swimming classes
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 or different types of tutoring.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 Or you might want them to hang around different friends
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 or buy them the best things
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 so that they do not miss out.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 And I've seen people that grow older.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 One of the things that people of my parents' generation,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:50 they keep saying to us is that,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 I want to do this for you and buy this for you
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 because I don't want you to miss out.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 They fear that we will miss out.
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 If you think about it,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 all these fears are just
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 different manifestations of selfish fears
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 that drive us to hoard our money
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 and our time
00:04:08 --> 00:04:10 to spend it on ourselves and our loved ones.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 So you can see that today,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 the things that we fear
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 might be very different
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 from what is seen in Psalm 46.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 So the original title under the psalm,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 so when you read the psalm,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 there are little letters just below Psalm 46.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 Those titles tell us
00:04:30 --> 00:04:34 who is this psalm used for
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 and what is the situation.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 Unfortunately, in this psalm,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:38 they don't tell us,
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 the writer did not tell us
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 when these events happened.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 But we can read,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 if you read through the psalm,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:46 you will have noticed that
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 it is about God rescuing them.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 And there are many instances
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 in the Bible where
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 Israel or Judah
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 is surrounded by enemies.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 And one of the passages
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 that fits in this sort of
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 description and context
00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 is Psalm 2 Kings
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 chapters 18 to 19.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 So what I'm going to do today
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 is do something a little bit different.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 I'm going to read
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 this psalm alongside
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 with 2 Kings 18 to 19.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 So that's like a little
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 backstory and illustration
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 to this psalm.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 So we can actually feel
00:05:22 --> 00:05:22 what it means
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 to be under siege
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 and be attacked.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 So,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 the only things that,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 if you look at the psalm,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 like any good sermon,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 it's in three sections,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 so it makes it easy for me.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:35 There are three sections
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 in this psalm.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 Verses 1 to 3,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:39 God is present
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 to calm his people.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 Second section is
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 verses 4 to 7,
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 God is present
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 to comfort his city.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 The third section is
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 verses 8 to 11,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 God is present
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 to control the nations.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 So,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:54 let's look at
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 the first section,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 which is,
00:05:57 --> 00:05:57 God is present
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 to calm his people.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 So,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 I want to set the scene
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 for this psalm,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 so you can probably
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 read through the psalm.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 The psalm is crying
00:06:08 --> 00:06:08 to God
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 as their strength
00:06:09 --> 00:06:09 and refuge.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 And one of the things,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 if you read 2 Kings
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 chapters 18 to 19,
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 you can see that
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 that's a situation
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 that God's people
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 needed rescuing from.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 They were under siege.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 And I haven't been
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 under siege,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 which is great.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 But I like watching movies
00:06:29 --> 00:06:29 with sieges in it,
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 especially like
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:33 Those siege scenes
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 are awesome.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 And siege scenes
00:06:37 --> 00:06:37 are always great
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 because you know that
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 there's a lot of pressure
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 built up
00:06:41 --> 00:06:41 and there are always
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 heroic armies
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 marching out.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 And you know that
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 the people under siege,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 they tend to escape,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 which is always
00:06:48 --> 00:06:48 a good ending,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:49 a happy ending.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 But in reality,
00:06:52 --> 00:06:52 sieges are actually
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 very scary.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 Sieges are
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 a horrible way
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 to conquer a city
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 for those that are
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 under siege.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:02 They might die
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 of disease
00:07:03 --> 00:07:03 and starvation.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 And usually,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 it doesn't end well,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 unlike most movies.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 And the situation
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 described in 2 Kings
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 is especially
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 terrifying.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 So let's do some math
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 to help us understand
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 why it is terrifying.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 We have to do,
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 fast forward to
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 2 Kings
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 chapter 19,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 verse 35.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 We know that
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 the Assyrian army
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 had at least
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 185 people
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 because that's how many
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 got
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 slaughtered
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 at the end of the story.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:37 And
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 in the middle,
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 when
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 the king of Assyria
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 taunted
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 Hezekiah,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 he implied that
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 Jerusalem didn't even
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 have 2 men
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 to be mounted warriors
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 to meet this army.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 So you can think
00:07:53 --> 00:07:53 of it as the math,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 185
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 to 2.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 That's 92 to 1.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 These are not good odds.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:01 Humanly speaking,
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 there's no way
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 for them to survive.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 Let's trace the story
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 back to the beginning
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 in 2 Kings.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 So if you have the Bible,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 turn to 2 Kings
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 chapter 18.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:13 If not,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:14 you can just follow
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 this story along with me.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 So in 2 Kings
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 chapter 18,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:18 verse 13
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 onwards,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 we can see that
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 the Assyrians
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 is a very
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 large and cruel army
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 coming from the north.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 They've come,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:28 destroyed
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 all the other nations,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 and they're now
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 coming up to Judah.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:34 Hezekiah
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 is the king
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 of Judah
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 and Jerusalem.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 he is scared
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 of the Assyrians,
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 so he tried
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 to appease
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 this king
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 by giving him
00:08:44 --> 00:08:44 a tribute.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 He basically
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 tried to find
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 all the gold
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 and all the wealth
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 that he can find,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 even by scraping off
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 all the gold
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 from the temple
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 and giving it
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 to the king
00:08:56 --> 00:08:56 of Assyria,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 Sennacherib,
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 as a tribute.
00:08:59 --> 00:08:59 He thought
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 that that might
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 appease the king,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 but instead
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 of appeasing
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 the king,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 the king
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 of Assyria,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 Sennacherib,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:09 taunted Judah,
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 taunted them
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 for the fact
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 that they tried
00:09:14 --> 00:09:14 to rely
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 on Egypt
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 and taunted
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 them,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 taunted
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 Judah's god.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 We can see
00:09:21 --> 00:09:21 this taunt
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 in 2 Kings
00:09:23 --> 00:09:23 chapter 18,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 verses 19 to 23.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 I'll read that now.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 On what do you
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 rest this trust
00:09:29 --> 00:09:29 of yours?
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 Do you think
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 that mere words
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 are strategy
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 and power
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 for war?
00:09:34 --> 00:09:34 In whom
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 do you now trust
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 that you have
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 rebelled against me?
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 Behold,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 you are trusting
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 now in Egypt,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 that broken reed
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 of a staff,
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 which will appease
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 the hand of any man
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 who leans on it.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 Such is Pharaoh,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 king of Egypt,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 to all who trust
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 in him.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 But if you say
00:09:52 --> 00:09:52 to me,
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 we have removed,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 we trust
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 in the Lord
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 our God,
00:09:58 --> 00:09:58 is it not
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 he whose
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 high places
00:10:00 --> 00:10:00 and altars
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 Hezekiah
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 has removed,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 saying to Judah
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 and to Jerusalem,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:06 you shall worship
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 before this altar
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 in Jerusalem.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 Come now,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 make a wager
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 with me,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:11 my master,
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 the king of Assyria.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 I will give you
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 2 horses
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 if you are able
00:10:17 --> 00:10:17 to,
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 on your part,
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 set riders
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 on them.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 So you can see
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 in this taunt,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 he's saying
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 that there's no way
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 for Israel,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 for Jerusalem
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 to survive.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 With this background,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 and we know
00:10:32 --> 00:10:32 the end of the story
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 that God
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 rescued Jerusalem,
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 we can actually
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 understand why
00:10:38 --> 00:10:38 the psalmist
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 was so glad
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 to sing
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 that God
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 is our refuge,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 our very present
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 help in trouble
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 in verse 1.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 Judah needed
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 a place to hide,
00:10:49 --> 00:10:49 and although
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 they were tempted
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 to buy off
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 their enemies
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 and rely on Egypt,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 at the end
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 they realized
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 that,
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 Hezekiah realized
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 that the only
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 place to hide
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 is God.
00:10:59 --> 00:10:59 What's more,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 they needed
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 to be delivered
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 soon,
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 because they
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 were besieged.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:04 We will trace
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 the story back
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 a little bit later
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 to see how close
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 they were
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 to destruction.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 That's why
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 the psalmist
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 prayed that
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 it's a very
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 present help
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 in trouble.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 God helped
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 them just
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 at the right
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 time when
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 they needed
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 help.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:19 You can
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 actually,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 remembering
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 the odds,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 the overwhelming
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 odds that they
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 have,
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 92 to 1
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 man,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 185
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 army to
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 2,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 is a miraculous
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 salvation.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 That's why
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 the psalmist
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 kept singing
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 in verses 2
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 and 3,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 that though
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 we will not
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 fear,

00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 And one of
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 these cities is
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 called Lipna.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 And you can
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 see that story
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 in 2 Kings
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 chapter 19.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 The Assyrian
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 army moved
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 closer to
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 the city of
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 Jerusalem and
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 attacked Lipna.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 And they
00:13:25 --> 00:13:25 did it
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 throughout the
00:13:26 --> 00:13:26 day.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 And because
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 it took a
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 while, they
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 needed to
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 take a break
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 in the
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 afternoon.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:34 And the
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 Assyrians

00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 taunt to
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 Hezekiah and
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 Jerusalem.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 Now he's
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 taunting God
00:13:41 --> 00:13:41 directly,
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 taunting how
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 has the
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 Lord helped

00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 Please destroy
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 the Assyrians.
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 But Hezekiah
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 didn't pray that.
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 He appealed to
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 who God is,
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 the Lord.
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 The Lord is
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 the name Yahweh
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 for God in the
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 Old Testament.
00:15:21 --> 00:15:21 He appealed to
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 God being the
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 one that is
00:15:23 --> 00:15:23 different.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 He is above
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 all the other
00:15:26 --> 00:15:26 nations.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 Notice that he
00:15:28 --> 00:15:28 describes the
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 Lord in verse
00:15:30 --> 00:15:30 15 as
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 enthroned between
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 the cherubims.
00:15:33 --> 00:15:35 The cherubims are
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 two little angels
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 in the temple.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 It's representing
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 that God is in
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 the temple in
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 Jerusalem.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 It's describing
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 how God is
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 present above
00:15:48 --> 00:15:48 the Ark of the
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 Covenant.
00:15:50 --> 00:15:50 Therefore, we
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 can see that
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 Hezekiah is
00:15:52 --> 00:15:52 appealing,
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 for God to
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 save Jerusalem,

00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 it needed
00:15:57 --> 00:15:57 rescuing,
00:15:58 --> 00:15:58 but because of
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 His name and

00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 where He dwells
00:16:02 --> 00:16:02 in the temple.

00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 in verse 4 of
00:16:06 --> 00:16:06 Psalm 46,
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 we can see that
00:16:08 --> 00:16:10 the psalmist is
00:16:10 --> 00:16:10 saying that
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 there's a river
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 that flows
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 and that makes
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 glad the city of
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 God.
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 This is where
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 the Most High
00:16:16 --> 00:16:16 dwells.
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 God dwells in
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 Jerusalem in
00:16:19 --> 00:16:19 Jerusalem in the
00:16:19 --> 00:16:19 temple.
00:16:21 --> 00:16:21 And you can
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 actually see the
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 contrast between
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 the total chaos
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 outside being
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 besieged and
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 how they felt
00:16:27 --> 00:16:29 inside because
00:16:29 --> 00:16:29 God is with
00:16:29 --> 00:16:29 them.
00:16:30 --> 00:16:32 So we are
00:16:32 --> 00:16:32 reminded of
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 earthquake and
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 chaos and
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 destruction outside,
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 but the picture
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 inside is that
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 God is in the
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 midst of her.
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 She will not be
00:16:41 --> 00:16:41 moved.
00:16:42 --> 00:16:42 And God will
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 help her when
00:16:43 --> 00:16:43 the morning
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 dawns.
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 And these
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 are amazing
00:16:46 --> 00:16:46 words,
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 considering
00:16:47 --> 00:16:47 they were
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 besieged
00:16:48 --> 00:16:48 overnight and
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 they are
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 awaiting their
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 fate the next
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 morning.
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 And we can
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 actually see what
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 happened that
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 night when
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 Hezekiah prayed
00:16:57 --> 00:16:59 in 2 Kings
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 chapter 19,
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 verse 35.
00:17:02 --> 00:17:02 That night the
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 angel of the
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 Lord went out
00:17:04 --> 00:17:04 and put to
00:17:04 --> 00:17:06 death 185
00:17:06 --> 00:17:08 in the Assyrian
00:17:08 --> 00:17:08 camp.
00:17:09 --> 00:17:09 When the people
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 got up the
00:17:10 --> 00:17:10 next morning,
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 they were all
00:17:12 --> 00:17:12 dead bodies.
00:17:12 --> 00:17:16 So God's
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 angel is God's
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 means of
00:17:19 --> 00:17:19 destroying the
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 Assyrian armies.
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 This is why in
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 verses 7 and
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 11, the
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 psalmist can
00:17:26 --> 00:17:26 sing,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 The Lord of
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 hosts is with
00:17:29 --> 00:17:29 us.
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 The God of
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 Jacob is our
00:17:31 --> 00:17:31 fortress.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 The phrase,
00:17:33 --> 00:17:33 the Lord of
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 hosts, or the
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 Lord Almighty,
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 depending on
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 which translation
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 you use, is
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 describing God
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 as the warrior
00:17:40 --> 00:17:42 king over his
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 angelic armies.
00:17:45 --> 00:17:46 So let's step
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 back.
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 We use the
00:17:48 --> 00:17:48 siege as an
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 illustration of
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 Psalm 46.
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 We think about
00:17:51 --> 00:17:52 what happens in
00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 this siege, and
00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 indeed some of
00:17:54 --> 00:17:55 the sieges in
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 the rest of the
00:17:56 --> 00:17:56 Old Testament.
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 We can see that
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 usually human
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 means does not
00:18:00 --> 00:18:00 work.
00:18:01 --> 00:18:02 In this instance,
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 nothing that
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 Hezekiah did,
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 whether it's
00:18:05 --> 00:18:05 paying a tribute
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 to Assyria,
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 forming an
00:18:08 --> 00:18:08 alliance with
00:18:08 --> 00:18:10 Egypt, that
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 didn't work.
00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 Hezekiah didn't
00:18:12 --> 00:18:13 even send an
00:18:13 --> 00:18:14 army out to
00:18:14 --> 00:18:14 meet the
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 Assyrians.
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 God's army
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 destroyed the
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 Assyrians before
00:18:18 --> 00:18:18 they did
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 anything the
00:18:19 --> 00:18:20 next morning.
00:18:21 --> 00:18:21 This is why
00:18:21 --> 00:18:23 God alone is
00:18:23 --> 00:18:24 a strength and
00:18:24 --> 00:18:24 refuge.
00:18:27 --> 00:18:27 The third
00:18:27 --> 00:18:29 section of
00:18:29 --> 00:18:29 the psalm is

00:18:52 --> 00:18:53 nations around
00:18:53 --> 00:18:53 them are going
00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 to hear of

00:19:20 --> 00:19:21 instructions for
00:19:21 --> 00:19:22 the people of
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 Jerusalem, or
00:19:23 --> 00:19:25 the readers of
00:19:25 --> 00:19:25 the psalm.
00:19:26 --> 00:19:27 In verse 8,
00:19:27 --> 00:19:28 the instruction
00:19:28 --> 00:19:28 is for them
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 to come.
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 Come to see
00:19:31 --> 00:19:31 what the Lord
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 has done.

00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 and to
00:19:48 --> 00:19:48 strategize,
00:19:49 --> 00:19:50 God alone
00:19:50 --> 00:19:50 is the king.
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 He alone
00:19:52 --> 00:19:53 can crush
00:19:53 --> 00:19:54 everyone else.
00:19:54 --> 00:19:55 He can use
00:19:55 --> 00:19:56 his own means
00:19:56 --> 00:19:56 to do
00:19:56 --> 00:19:57 everything.
00:19:59 --> 00:20:00 But the
00:20:00 --> 00:20:00 thing is,
00:20:01 --> 00:20:01 his destruction
00:20:01 --> 00:20:02 is fair.
00:20:02 --> 00:20:02 Some people
00:20:02 --> 00:20:03 might ask

00:20:03 --> 00:20:05 cruel for
