00:00:07 --> 00:00:14 we pray that we would heed the warning of Israel who listened to you,
00:00:15 --> 00:00:21 even delighted to listen to you, and yet ignored what you said.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:26 So as we come to your word now, we ask, Father, that you would, by your spirit,
00:00:26 --> 00:00:34 help us to see it as light and truth and hope, and that we would be motivated to obey it.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 And we ask it for your sake. Amen.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:52 On the eve of Operation Desert Storm in January 1991, President Bush Sr. said it was America's responsibility
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 to protecuate because we are the leaders of the world.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:01 Fairly arrogant thing to say, really.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 Typically American, but fairly arrogant thing to say.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:12 Because they were on the winning side of World War II, they were the economic powerhouse of the world,
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 they've got Hollywood and Arnold Schwarzenegger,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:20 in their arrogance, they just assumed that they would always be on top of the world,
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 that they would always be right and that they are always victorious.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:30 The fact is, though, that they'd only been a major world player for around about 80, 90 years.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 In that time, they'd been defeated in Vietnam,
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 been sorely bruised in Korea and Somalia,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:41 and now in Iraq and Afghanistan.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:46 Yet, in their arrogance, they think they will never be defeated,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 they will always be on top of the world.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:49 Why?
00:01:50 --> 00:01:54 It's got to be linked to the thought that God is on our side
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 as we battle the forces of evil.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 If you've ever visited America, you'll know what I mean.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 The first thing you encounter when going into the United States
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 is US customs, homeland security.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 They're the guys dressed up in black paramilitary stuff
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 with bulletproof vests and guns.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 They're the guys who wanted to go to Iraq but got given a desk job instead.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 And so they are looking for someone to shoot.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:31 I remember coming one day from Canada into the United States.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 Must be the riskiest border in the world.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 And I was going in with someone with an Australian passport,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:42 also a couple of people.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:43 One person with an American passport,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 two others with Australian passports.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 And one of them needed to get the green card.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:53 And so we pulled in, hopped out of the car, went in and stood in line.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:58 One person stepped over the yellow line accidentally,
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 was just standing on the wrong side of the yellow line.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 And the customs guy comes right up into his face and says,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 back off over the line.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 It's like, whoa, we're in a major security risk area here.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 Another person was standing in the line.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:20 We were standing there for 45 minutes and the line didn't go anywhere in 45 minutes.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:25 And there was a man dressed up in a suit heading down into the US.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 And as the customs guy walked along the line, he said to him,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 excuse me, sir, how long will this take?
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 And he said, how long are you expecting to live?
00:03:35 --> 00:03:42 And he said, well, I don't really know,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:45 but this seems to be taking a while.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:51 And he said to him, that's the price you pay to come to the United States.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 And of course, he comes to me and I whip out my Australian passport.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 Coalition of the willing, coalition of the willing.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:02 Coalition of the willing.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:09 The US has little reason for its arrogance,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:12 but by the time of the monarchy in Israel,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 they did have good reason.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 With the promised land and the temple and the Ark of the King,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 Israel had been on top for over a thousand years.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 Their history was pretty impressive.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:28 We started this series on the kingdom of God back in the book of Genesis,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 right at the beginning.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 And the framework for understanding the kingdom of God
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 and therefore the kingdom of Israel was established in the garden.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:41 God's people in God's special place under the rule of God.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:45 And God ruled them through his mighty word.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:51 Genesis 3, however, reveals rebellion against God's word and his rule.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:52 It's sin.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 It's people who have no right to rule,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 rising up against the one who has the right to rule,
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 ignoring his word and doing their own thing.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:07 And the outcome is expulsion from God's presence and everything is cursed.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 The good news is, we discovered very quickly,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 that God has not abandoned his world.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:17 He even gives Adam and Eve a very small glimpse there
00:05:17 --> 00:05:21 that he will one day rise up someone who will crush the head of Satan.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:24 And as we see, the Bible progresses,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 God has a plan to undo and reverse the impact of their rebellion.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 In Genesis 12, God makes a promise that he will undo Genesis 3
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 through one man and his descendants.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 And God's plan is to bless this man and his descendants
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 by giving them a special place
00:05:41 --> 00:05:45 where he will rule over them and dwell with them.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:51 The plan was for the whole world to be blessed through these special people.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:56 And in Exodus 19, as we saw, expands on it,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 explains that the way God was going to bless this world
00:05:59 --> 00:06:05 was to set apart a bunch of people who would be different than everyone else.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:08 They were people who would be obedient to God's word.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:13 The way that they would be different is that they would wholeheartedly love God
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 and that they would obey him
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 and that they would love their neighbours as themselves.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:23 The book of Joshua takes us into the beginning of the conquest
00:06:23 --> 00:06:27 of this special place of God, his promised land.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:32 It was hard and slow because of the numerous enemies which occupied the land
00:06:32 --> 00:06:37 and the numerous enemies of their heart which they did battle on on the inside.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 And we saw last week in 2 Samuel 7
00:06:40 --> 00:06:45 that they did finally rid the land of all of God's enemies under King David.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 The promised land is here.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 It's ours.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 Fulfillment.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:54 We have arrived at the destination.
00:06:55 --> 00:07:00 And David's son Solomon sets about building a permanent temple in Jerusalem
00:07:00 --> 00:07:04 with the Ark of the Covenant in its place in its permanent home
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 and God would be a permanent fixture.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 Israel is on top of the world.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:17 And they thought that they would always be on top of the world
00:07:17 --> 00:07:21 because in the middle of their land was the city of Jerusalem.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:26 In the middle of the city of Jerusalem stood a permanent temple
00:07:26 --> 00:07:30 and in the middle of the permanent temple was the Ark of the Covenant
00:07:30 --> 00:07:34 which held the word of God and God's presence was assured.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 Such was the arrogance of the people of Israel.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:45 And it isn't long and we see the enemy within is still a problem.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:55 1 Kings 10, the Queen of Sheba comes and Solomon shares the wisdom he has gained from God.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:59 That is, the people of Israel are now blessing the nations.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 That's in 1 Kings 10.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 And the beginning of 1 Kings 11 we read,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:27 Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in his love.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:33 Turns out they are no different than anyone else.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:41 Ezekiel 33 gives us a glimpse into the attitude of the people of God
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 as they consistently ignore the word of God.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:50 As for you, son of man, your countrymen are talking together about you by the walls at the doors and the houses
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 saying to each other,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 And so my people come to you as they usually do
00:08:57 --> 00:09:00 and sit before you to listen to your words.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 But they do not put them into practice.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 With their mouths they express devotion
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:17 Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 and plays an instrument well
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 for they hear your words
00:09:21 --> 00:09:25 but they do not put them into practice.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:33 The people of God would simultaneously sit, hear and enjoy the word of God
00:09:33 --> 00:09:37 and then ignore it like it was just some kind of a love song.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:42 They would go through all the motions of worship
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 but their hearts were far from God.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:49 And so throughout Israel's history for the time of Samuel onwards
00:09:49 --> 00:09:55 the prophetic office was closely linked to the conditions laid down by God
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 for enjoyment of covenant blessings.
00:09:56 --> 00:10:02 Although Israel's salvation has for its basis
00:10:02 --> 00:10:07 God's gracious act of saving the people out of Egypt
00:10:07 --> 00:10:13 there is a close link between the enjoyment of the final outcome of that salvation
00:10:13 --> 00:10:16 and Israel's obedience.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 Now on the surface
00:10:19 --> 00:10:23 that appears to mean that Israel's salvation
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 was achieved by obedience to the law
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 but that is not the case.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:34 Grace first comes in the saving acts of God
00:10:34 --> 00:10:40 and then the law binds the saved people to God as his people.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:46 And should these people refuse to accept their responsibility
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 to live as God's people
00:10:47 --> 00:10:53 then they must suffer removal from the land of blessing.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 Exile
00:10:54 --> 00:10:58 in the same way that they had previously experienced out of Eden.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:03 The relationship of good works to salvation
00:11:03 --> 00:11:06 is essentially the same in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:10 In both salvation is by grace
00:11:10 --> 00:11:13 but grace never stands alone with our good works.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 To put it another way
00:11:15 --> 00:11:19 we may say that no one is saved because of obedience
00:11:19 --> 00:11:24 but no one is saved without obedience.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:30 So the ministry of the prophets
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 was calling the people of God back
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 to covenant obedience.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:38 Even when the kingdom of Israel split under Solomon
00:11:38 --> 00:11:42 and they start to slide into destruction
00:11:42 --> 00:11:46 the ministries of the likes of Elijah and Elisha
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 combined in an effort
00:11:48 --> 00:11:51 to bring the people back to covenant obedience.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 In their arrogance though
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 the people of God by and large
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 refused to obey
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 and listen to the word of God
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 from the mouth of the prophets.
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 Their sinful hearts were far from God.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:07 And it gets that bad
00:12:07 --> 00:12:09 that by Ezekiel
00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 by the time of the prophets of Ezekiel
00:12:11 --> 00:12:15 and other pre-exilic and post-exilic prophets
00:12:15 --> 00:12:19 they were defiling God's temple
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 with idolatrous worship.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:25 A defilement that spread everywhere in the land.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 In other words
00:12:25 --> 00:12:28 God's special promised land
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 was now viewed as putrid
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 by God
00:12:32 --> 00:12:35 according to Ezekiel 6 and 7.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:39 And the penalty for this defilement
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 was expulsion
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 out of the land.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:47 Israel had chosen uncleanliness
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 they have chosen
00:12:48 --> 00:12:51 to ignore the word of God
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 and so they will have uncleanliness
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 in its full measure.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 They will be driven out of God's land
00:12:59 --> 00:13:02 into an unclean land.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 Uncleanliness
00:13:04 --> 00:13:07 will not just be their hearts
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 but uncleanliness
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 will be their total environment.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:15 And so the unthinkable happens
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 in Ezekiel 10.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:20 The thing that Israel thought
00:13:20 --> 00:13:20 would never happen
00:13:20 --> 00:13:23 God
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 leaves
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 his temple.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:30 And now it is no more
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 than a few stones
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 heaped on top of one another
00:13:34 --> 00:13:36 and with his departure
00:13:36 --> 00:13:38 God hands the city
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 and the nation
00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 over to be destroyed
00:13:42 --> 00:13:44 and it happened in 586 BC.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 According to
00:13:48 --> 00:13:51 chapter 1 of Ezekiel
00:13:51 --> 00:13:55 Ezekiel is one of God's people
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 that's been kicked out of God's place
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 and wondering
00:13:59 --> 00:14:01 at this point
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 what has happened
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 to all the promises of God.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 all our hope
00:14:06 --> 00:14:06 was
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 wrapped up in this land
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 in this temple
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 in this ark
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 and now
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 it is all gone.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 God
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 what have
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 you done?
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 Perhaps you can imagine
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 the 30 year old Ezekiel
00:14:20 --> 00:14:22 wandering beside the Kibar River
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 thinking about his future.
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 As a 30 year old man
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 son of Busi
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 the priest
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 he would have began
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 his priestly ministry
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 in the temple
00:14:31 --> 00:14:33 and now
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 he's 800 kilometers
00:14:34 --> 00:14:36 from home
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 in a foreign land
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 under the rule
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 of a foreign empire
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 he was a captive
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 he was a slave
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 he was a long way
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 from home
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 both physically
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 and spiritually.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 All of he knew
00:14:47 --> 00:14:47 about God
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 and his promises
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 were 800 kilometers away
00:14:50 --> 00:14:52 the temple
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 was the center
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 of God's activity
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 with his people
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 but without a land
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 and without a Jerusalem
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 and without a temple
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 without an ark
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 what is left
00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 is God dead?
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 Has God abandoned
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 his promises?
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 Has God forgotten
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 about his people?
00:15:13 --> 00:15:15 Good questions.
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 And yet
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 in Ezekiel 1 verse 1
00:15:19 --> 00:15:22 tells us that
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 Ezekiel saw
00:15:23 --> 00:15:25 the heavens opened
00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 and I saw
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 visions of God
00:15:28 --> 00:15:32 on the Kiba River
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 800 kilometers
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 away from Jerusalem
00:15:34 --> 00:15:36 in a foreign land
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 as a captive
00:15:37 --> 00:15:37 no priest
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 no temple
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 only a few
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 of the people
00:15:40 --> 00:15:40 of God
00:15:40 --> 00:15:42 Ezekiel gets
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 a really
00:15:43 --> 00:15:45 strange sight
00:15:45 --> 00:15:48 he gets
00:15:48 --> 00:15:48 a vision
00:15:48 --> 00:15:48 of God
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 where God
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 should not be
00:15:51 --> 00:15:54 God shows up
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 God has not
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 forgotten
00:15:56 --> 00:15:56 his covenant
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 promises
00:15:57 --> 00:15:57 to Abraham
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 and David
00:15:58 --> 00:16:00 yes
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 right now
00:16:01 --> 00:16:01 the people
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 of God
00:16:02 --> 00:16:02 were put
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 in the time
00:16:03 --> 00:16:03 out corner
00:16:03 --> 00:16:05 for their
00:16:05 --> 00:16:05 rebellion
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 their sin
00:16:06 --> 00:16:06 and their
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 impurity
00:16:07 --> 00:16:09 and even
00:16:09 --> 00:16:09 though
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 the majority
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 of the
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 messages
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 of the
00:16:13 --> 00:16:13 prophets
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 is one
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 of judgment
00:16:14 --> 00:16:16 it is also
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 a message
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 of hope
00:16:17 --> 00:16:19 in Ezekiel 36
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 God makes
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 a remarkable
00:16:21 --> 00:16:21 promise
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 he says
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 for I will
00:16:23 --> 00:16:23 take you
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 out of the
00:16:24 --> 00:16:24 nations
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 I will
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 gather you
00:16:26 --> 00:16:26 from all
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 the countries
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 and bring
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 you back
00:16:29 --> 00:16:29 into your
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 own land
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 I will
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 sprinkle
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 clean water
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 on you
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 and you
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 will be
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 clean
00:16:36 --> 00:16:38 I will
00:16:38 --> 00:16:38 cleanse you
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 from all
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 your impurities
00:16:40 --> 00:16:40 and from
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 all your
00:16:41 --> 00:16:41 idols
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 I will

00:16:43 --> 00:16:43 heart

00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 a new
00:16:44 --> 00:16:44 spirit

00:17:06 --> 00:17:06 mouth of
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 this prophet
00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 God reaffirms
00:17:09 --> 00:17:09 his covenant
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 prophecies
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 to his
00:17:11 --> 00:17:11 exiled
