00:00:08 --> 00:00:11 Father God, we thank and praise you for bringing us here tonight.
00:00:11 --> 00:00:15 We thank you for your word in which you reveal yourself to us.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:20 Lord, I ask that you would give us open ears and open hearts to hear you speak.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:25 Keep us from picking the bits that we want and ignoring the bits that are hard to hear.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 But rather, God, may we hear your voice clearly.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:33 May you shape us and change us by your spirit as a result of what we look at tonight.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:39 Lord, may we grasp more fully the incredible blessing and privilege it is that you are with us tonight.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:40 Amen.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:49 Something I've discovered as I work with people of all different ages is that universally humans have an ability.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:55 It may be better described as a disability, but it is the art of selective hearing.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:57 It doesn't matter how old or young you are.
00:00:57 --> 00:00:59 It doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 We can all do this amazingly well when it suits us.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:07 I remember a few years ago in a previous ministry situation that I was in,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:13 I was chatting to a young guy who was having some relational difficulties with his girlfriend.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 And they had had a very serious chat about their relationship.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 And he came to me and he was chatting about how things were.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 And he relayed to me a little bit about how the conversation had gone.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 And he'd said, you know, it was great.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:30 She told me that she still really cared about me.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 And she told me that, you know, she really respected me.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 And she told me that, you know, she really admired my faith.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 And she told me that she just wanted to have a break to make sure that we could both be in a good place with God.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:49 And for him, he was sure that what she meant was,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 we'll just have a break for a little while, get ourselves back on track.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 And because she still cares about me, we'll be together again soon.
00:01:55 --> 00:02:00 It wasn't until about a week and a half later when she had another boyfriend
00:02:00 --> 00:02:04 that it became apparent that he had misheard some of the phrasing in the conversation.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 I'm not sure how you can take break up any other way,
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 but he had managed to hear a short break until we get back together.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 But it's interesting that when we want to hear something,
00:02:16 --> 00:02:18 we often hear exactly what we want to hear.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 It reminds me when I was younger receiving school reports.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:27 There was kind of a refrain in all of my school reports growing up
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 that when something like,
00:02:28 --> 00:02:31 Sam has great potential if he would apply himself.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 And I would get these school reports.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 This was in the day when they gave them to you at school,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:38 foolishly trusting that you would hand them straight to your parents.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:40 And I would get them and I would open it up
00:02:40 --> 00:02:43 and I would walk away feeling fantastic, thinking,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 my teachers love me, look how much potential they think I have.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 I'm going to take over the world with all this potential.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 But for some reason, my mum read my reports really differently
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 and I could never understand why she was so frustrated with me
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 each time I brought a report card home
00:02:58 --> 00:03:00 and I would have to deal with some sort of punishment
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 when I'm sitting there thinking,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 am I being punished for my potential?
00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 But apparently there was something else in there.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:08 And we often do this.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 Maybe you're one of those people
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 who only hears the positive when someone's talking to you.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 They'll be letting you know something about maybe how you look
00:03:17 --> 00:03:18 and they'll go, you know,
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 that shirt looks really good compared to your pants
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 and you just hear my shirt looks good
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 and you're floating for the rest of the day.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 But maybe you're at the other end
00:03:25 --> 00:03:26 and you just hear the negative.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 You could hear 15 compliments
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 but then just that one thing about,
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 what's that on your face?
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 And that's all you're thinking about
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 for the next couple of days.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 And it's interesting how we all do it
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 in a whole bunch of different situations
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 but we're never aware of it at the time.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 We pick out the thing that we want to hear
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 and that's the thing that is ringing in our ears.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 But the problem comes when we start to do that
00:03:49 --> 00:03:50 when we come to God.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 When we open the Bible and we read His commands
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 and we read His promises
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 and we read Him speaking to us
00:03:58 --> 00:04:01 and we just pick out the bits that we want to hear.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 We pick out the things that are kind of easy to hear.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 We pick out the things that are encouraging or affirming
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 and we take what we want
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 but we miss the main point.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 We actually don't hear what it is
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 that God is trying to teach us.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 And in a series like this,
00:04:15 --> 00:04:18 we're trying to wade through the whole Bible.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 That is a pretty significant undertaking.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 We're trying to understand
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 how the kingdom of God is unfolding,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 how God is establishing His kingdom.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 And if we come into this sort of a series
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 with our selective hearing,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 we're in great danger of actually
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 misinterpreting the whole Bible.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 It's really important that we come
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 and we are ready to hear whatever it is
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 that God has to say
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 as He gradually reveals His plan
00:04:48 --> 00:04:50 for building His kingdom.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 Because we began with Adam
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 in the Garden of Eden
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 and this amazing potential,
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 the spectacular failure of Genesis 3
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 and then the rescue mission began.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 We saw the promises to Abraham.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 There was a fairly frustrating pattern of sin
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 through Genesis.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 Last week we got to Moses
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 and God shows up spectacularly
00:05:13 --> 00:05:13 at Mount Sinai.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 He gives His people the law
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 and everything feels like it's moving
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 in a good direction.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 But the problem that we're going to discover tonight
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 is that Israel has been listening to God
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 but just listening for the things
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 that they want to hear.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 So Israel has some pretty exciting promises
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 to hold on to.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 God has promised Abraham blessing.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 God has promised Abraham land.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 God has promised Abraham
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 he will be a great nation.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 God has promised Abraham
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 that he will be famous.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 And so there is this national pride
00:05:44 --> 00:05:44 and identity
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 that they are all looking forward to.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 But the problem is
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 that's all they're hearing.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 They're hearing we're going to get some land.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 At the moment we're wandering around
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 but we are going to have our own country.
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 God's going to kick people out
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 so we get some space for our own.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 And it's not just going to be any land.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 It's going to be land
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 flowing with milk and honey.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 It's going to be fantastic.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 We're going to be a great nation.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 People are going to look up to us.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 People are going to fear us.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 God's going to give us stuff.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 We're going to get blessings.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 But can you see that all of a sudden
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 Israel has become driven
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 by what they can see
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 in all the nations around them.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 We want to have land
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 better than that nation.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 We want to have an army
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 more powerful than that nation.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 We want to be respected
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 more than that nation.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 In fact they even wanted a king
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 better than the other nations.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:36 But they've misunderstood
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 that the point of the kingdom of God
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 the point of the covenant
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 the point of the promises
00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 is for God to restore
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 what was broken
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 in Genesis chapter 3.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 That's his whole agenda
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 through all of scripture.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 That is what the kingdom is.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 The kingdom is the fix
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 of the fall.
00:06:56 --> 00:07:00 In fact the promise
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 in Genesis chapter 12
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 that God makes to Abraham
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 in one sense
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 is kind of obvious
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 for us to look at.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 The blessing that he's promising them
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 is himself.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 The blessing isn't
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 that they will be a nation
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 that they will be famous.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 Those are some things
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 that God's going to do
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 but the blessing
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 that God is promising
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 is he's going to give them himself.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 That was what was there in Eden
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 and that is God's agenda
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 God's desire
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 that he would be able
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 to dwell with his people again.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 Eden was this amazing picture
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 where God walked in the garden
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 and spoke with Adam and Eve
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 and his agenda
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 is to restore
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 that relationship
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 where he will dwell
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 with his people.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 And so we come to 2 Samuel 7.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 We have skipped a significant part
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 of the Old Testament
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 and I encourage you
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 to address it in your own time
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 but in the interest
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 of recapping for our sake
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 let's just try and understand
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 where we've come to.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 So there's a fair bit
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 of travelling going on.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:55 Last week
00:07:55 --> 00:07:58 Israel was at Mount Sinai
00:07:58 --> 00:07:58 in the desert.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 God was establishing them
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 he gave them the law
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 he told them
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 you're headed to Canaan
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 that's the land I'm giving you
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 and then for the next
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 fair while
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 they wandered around
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 kind of stuffing up.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:11 God would say
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 do this
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 they'd do something
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 slightly different.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:14 God would say
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 go to this place
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 they'd go to a slightly
00:08:16 --> 00:08:16 different place.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 God would say
00:08:17 --> 00:08:17 it's ready
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 they'd say no it's not
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 and they would just
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 keep spinning the wheels
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 and never actually
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 getting to the place
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 where they wanted to
00:08:23 --> 00:08:23 but finally
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 just before our passage
00:08:25 --> 00:08:25 tonight
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 Israel has moved
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 into the land
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 there's been some
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 pretty spectacular battles
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 you know
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 the walls of Jericho
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 have fallen down
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 and now God
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 has cleared house.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 This land of Canaan
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 is suddenly free
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 from all the people
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 who used to own it
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 who used to live there
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 and God has given it
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 to his people Israel
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 just like he promised.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:45 And there's a really
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 interesting verse
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 right at the beginning
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 of chapter 7
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 have a look
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 after the king
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 was settled in his palace
00:08:50 --> 00:08:50 and the Lord
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 had given him rest
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 from all his enemies
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 around him.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:55 See things seem
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 to be progressing
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 really well
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 considering all the rubbish
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 that's been happening
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 so far in our series
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 now Israel is in the land
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 that God promised.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 Now they have rest
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 from the enemies around them
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 they have been at war
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 for generations
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 and it says here
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 they have rest.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 God has been blessing them
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 David is a king
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 he's living in a palace
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 they're not moving around
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 in tents anymore
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 everything seems to be
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 advancing really fantastically
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 and the most important bit
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 the bit that started
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 with our sermon last week
00:09:26 --> 00:09:26 with Moses
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 is that God is with them.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 God is present
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 with his people.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 He's turned up
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 and he is living
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 in their community
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 in the form
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 of the Ark of the Covenant.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 The Ark is basically
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 a big box
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 that they carried around
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 which had the commandments
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 in it
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 and a few other bits
00:09:43 --> 00:09:43 and pieces
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 and that was symbolic
00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 that God is living
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 with his people
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 and that box
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 was put inside a tent
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 which was an inner room
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 inside another room
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 inside another whole bunch
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 of curtains
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 in the tabernacle
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 but that was where
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 God lived
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 in that box
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 in that room
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 inside those tents
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 of the tabernacle.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 So God was with them
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 but he was limited.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 It's not like they could
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 just wander up
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 and have a chat
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 whenever they wanted.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 The bits that we skipped over
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 all of Leviticus
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 is just all of the laws
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 that God requires
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 the sacrifices
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 that he requires
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 so that people
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 could interact with him.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 I mean he's there
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 so it's like we're moving
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 in a good direction
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 but surely
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 this isn't
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 what God promised.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 Surely this isn't
00:10:29 --> 00:10:29 the pinnacle.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 Surely this isn't
00:10:31 --> 00:10:31 what we've been
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 looking forward to
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 because even though
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 God is there
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 this is nothing
00:10:35 --> 00:10:37 like what it was like
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 before the fall.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 It's not even close.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 God is still
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 limited
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 to this box.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 These people
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 aren't free
00:10:48 --> 00:10:48 to just come
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 and approach him.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 There is a priestly
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 system
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 between him
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 and them.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 There is a sacrificial
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 system
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 between him
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 and them.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:58 There is a limit
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 to how much
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 of God's presence
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 they can actually
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 take.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 But the crazy
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 thing is
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 this is actually
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 an act of grace
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 on God's part.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:10 See back on
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 Mount Sinai
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 when God showed
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 up he shook
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 the mountain
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 there was lightning
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 there was fire
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 there was thunder
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 and the people
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 realise
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 maybe we shouldn't
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 be getting too
00:11:19 --> 00:11:19 close to God
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 just yet.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 And they're right
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 because they are
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 not worthy
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 of relating to
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 God.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 The issue
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 that comes out
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 in Genesis 3
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 where they reject
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 him is still
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 an issue.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 And so if God
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 just showed up
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 and started living
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 amongst them
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 wandering around
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 saying hello
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 they would just
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 get destroyed.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 The holiness
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 of God
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 the perfection
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 of God
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 would just
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 obliterate
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 the nation
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 if God
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 just turned up
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 and suddenly
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 moved in
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 and acted
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 like everything
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 was fine.

00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 we've got of
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 people place

00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 chosen them
