00:00:11 --> 00:00:13 Welcome to our gathering as a church family.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:17 For those that may not know me, my name is John.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:23 I'm a regular member of this church and currently training in a theology college
00:00:23 --> 00:00:27 to know God more and to better serve all of you.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:35 So each year, as part of our training, the students have opportunity to team up with churches
00:00:35 --> 00:00:41 and organizations for a week of intense ministry and mission works.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:51 So last week, the students were all around Australia and also overseas to spread the good news of God.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:56 We had teams in Melbourne, northwestern Australia.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:04 We have people in the Bible College in South Africa and a couple of Anakin churches and schools in Hong Kong
00:01:04 --> 00:01:10 and all over Sydney, with the closest one being Ataman and the Shores School.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:18 I myself joined 12 students, one faculty and one lady chaplain in Hong Kong
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 to partner with St. Andrew's Kowloon.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:30 We were involved in kids and youth ministry, men's breakfast, women ministry, home workers' devotion.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 We visited three universities to reach out to the students.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:40 And we also get a bit of sightseeing around Hong Kong and we actually joined the gaily dance,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 which is a Scottish dance that you go around and around like that.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:51 So for those of you that have kept me in your prayer, I really want to thank you for your support.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:59 I would also like to especially thank my wife, Vivian, because she took a look after our two kids while I was away.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 The team in Hong Kong had a very encouraging time.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:14 It was mostly encouraging, but we had a very encouraging time because we actually had a lot of chance to speak to people around in Hong Kong.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:20 But personally, I was most encouraged because I got to catch up with three friends that is from high school,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 which I haven't seen for 30 years.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:31 And it was very encouraging because we were able to speak from our heart and I was able to share my faith with them,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:33 get to know them more.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:38 And I guess when I left Hong Kong, we were sort of on a good friendship already.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:43 So I was able to rekindle that friendship and hopefully maintain that friendship.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 It was very encouraging to me.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:53 And also to actually find out that a lot of my old high school classmates are actually believers,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:59 faithful believers, brother and sister in Christ, that we are serving the same God.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:00 It's also very encouraging to me.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:06 So if you have a chance to catch up with some long-lost friend,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:09 what would you be focusing on with your conversation?
00:03:09 --> 00:03:14 What would you hope to happen during that meeting?
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 Are there issues that you might have left and dealt with that need to be resolved?
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 And what would you celebrate about?
00:03:23 --> 00:03:27 Nick already shared that since last few weeks ago and leading up to Easter,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 we as a church family have been looking into the book of John
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 to actually see Jesus' interaction with his follower
00:03:35 --> 00:03:40 before his imminent departure from earth to go back to God's side.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 We saw how Jesus reassure and encouraged his follower,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 promising the sending of the Holy Spirit after his departure
00:03:50 --> 00:03:55 to remind them of things that he has spoken to them until he returned.
00:03:55 --> 00:04:01 Jesus then pointed out that as someone follows him and do his command,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 that person will be transformed to be his friend
00:04:05 --> 00:04:09 and the transformed life will be a fruitful life.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:14 This new life that he gives will also be an uncomfortable one
00:04:14 --> 00:04:19 because the world hates and will persecute those that follow Jesus.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 However, he also pointed out that he has overcome the world
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 and his followers will live a joyful life
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 when they see the return of Christ Jesus their King.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 In all this conversation,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:38 Jesus has been using a future tense when he referred to his departure.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 But now we come to chapter 17.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 At the very beginning, Jesus says,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 the hour has come.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:52 The hour for his arrest and to face his death
00:04:52 --> 00:04:56 and his resurrection is only a few hours away.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 And Jesus takes this time to speak with his Father.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:06 In this chapter, we can see what concerns Jesus the most.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 We can see what is on Jesus' heart.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 As we drop in on Jesus' conversation with God,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 we will know Jesus more.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:19 A German reformer that worked with Martin Luther
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 and had contributed a lot towards the Reformation
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 is Philip Malenthin.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 And he said this about this chapter.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 There is no voice which has ever been heard,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 either in heaven or in earth,
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 more exalted, more holy, more fruitful,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 more sublime than this prayer
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 offered up by the Son of God himself.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:50 Most scholars and commentators would say
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 this is where we are given
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 the most profound revelation
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 of the very heart of our Lord Jesus.
00:05:58 --> 00:06:00 If you have been a Christian for a while,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 I encourage you to take some time
00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 to read through this chapter again after today.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:08 And if you do not know who is Jesus
00:06:08 --> 00:06:11 that many people have decided to follow,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 you should also read this chapter.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 This chapter provides the best evidence
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 of the deity of Jesus Christ,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 his self-consciousness of his identity,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 the claim that he made about himself,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:28 especially of his universal dominant,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 his reference to a previous existence
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 in living unity with the eternal God.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 Leave us with no match,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 not much choice.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 We can either decide that he's a lunatic,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 he's insane, or he's God.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 Even if you're not interested
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 in who Jesus really is,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 but interested in what life is about
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 if someone decided to follow Jesus
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 and become a Christian,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 you can also find the answer here
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 by Jesus' own words
00:07:00 --> 00:07:04 as he prayed for those that were following him
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 and for those that would believe in him
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 through the message of those followers.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 So please open your Bible to John 17 again
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 and let's walk through this chapter together
00:07:14 --> 00:07:17 to see what it has to offer to us.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 We'll begin from verse 1 to 5.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:39 After Jesus said this,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 he looked towards heaven and prayed,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 Father, the hour has come.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 Glorify your Son,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 that your Son may glorify you.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:53 For you grant him authority over all people,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 that he may give eternal life
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 to all those you have given him.
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 Now this is eternal life,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 that they know you,
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 the only true God,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 and Jesus Christ,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 whom you have sent.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 I have brought you glory on earth
00:08:08 --> 00:08:11 by finishing the work you have gave me to do.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 And now, Father,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 glorify me in your presence
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 with the glory I have with you
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 before the world began.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 As I'm meeting up with my old school friends,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 in our polite nature,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 the question of
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 who's your best friend at school
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 has often come up.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 But we rarely ask them,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:37 like,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 who upsets you the most
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 or who you dislike the most.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 I guess it goes without saying
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 that the kind of student
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 that we dislike the most
00:08:46 --> 00:08:49 would be those teacher's pets,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 self-glorifying and self-centered people.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 As you read this passage,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 it comes across Jesus as a bit selfish
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 by starting praying for himself.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 But however,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 it's furthest removed from selfishness
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 as possible.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:07 Jesus prayed
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 to be glorified
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 in order that
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 he might glorify his Father.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:13 And there's a reason
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 that he can offer
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 eternal life
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 to his follower.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 First one,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:19 he says,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:19 Father,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 the hour has come.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 Glorify your Son
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 that your Son may glorify you.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 For you grant him authority
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 over all people
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 that he might give eternal life
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 to all those
00:09:28 --> 00:09:31 you have given him.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 By his request
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 to be glorified,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 Jesus referred
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 to his crucifixion
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 that is going to happen
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 within a few hours.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 His triumph over the grave
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 after three days,
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 his ascension,
00:09:46 --> 00:09:46 and supremely
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 his outpouring
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 of the Holy Spirit.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 To glorify someone
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 is to make that someone known.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 Jesus decided to be known
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 in his true character
00:09:57 --> 00:09:59 as an obedient,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 divine Son of God,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 as a gracious Messiah,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 as a merciful Savior
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 of the world.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 All these attributes
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 were manifest
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 in the hour
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 which had come
00:10:12 --> 00:10:14 and extended
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 to the time
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 when all the believers
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 gather together
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 and receive the gift
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 of the Holy Spirit.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 This gift
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 constitutes
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 or secure
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 the answer
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 to his prayer.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:30 by the glory
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 of the Son,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 by Jesus making
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 the true character
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 and identity
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 of himself
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 known to the world,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 people will come
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 to know the Father
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 and the glory
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 of the Father
00:10:41 --> 00:10:41 was secured.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 God was never
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 so fully refilled
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 in all his justice
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 and love
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 and holiness
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 and grace
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 as by the hour
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 with which
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 we are focusing
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 our current
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 preaching series on.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 In addition,
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 eternal life
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 was also secure
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 for the follower
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 of Christ.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 In verse 3,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 it says,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 this is eternal life
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 that they know you,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 the only true God
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 and Jesus Christ
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 whom you have sent.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 To know
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 is not just
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 an act of mind.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 It's not just
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 a head knowledge
00:11:18 --> 00:11:21 because in that sense,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 demons know God.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 But to know
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 it represents
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 love,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 obedience,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 faith,
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 the response
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 of an entire
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 human being.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 To know
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 is to be intimate
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 and have close
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 relationship
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 with someone.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 Therefore,
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 the eternal life
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 that is referred to
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 is not only
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 a future event
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 but a present
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 experience.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:50 It means
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 endless
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 existence
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 in the future
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 but also
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 a present
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 heavenly blessedness.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 We know
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 we can go to heaven
00:11:58 --> 00:12:00 but at this stage
00:12:00 --> 00:12:00 right here
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 we can experience
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 the blessedness
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 that God gave us.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 Jesus
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 prays this prayer
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 based on
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 the fact that
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 his entire
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 earthly task
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 was completed.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 First of all,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 he says,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 I have brought you
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 glory on earth
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 by finishing
00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 the work
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 you have gave me
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 to do.
00:12:18 --> 00:12:22 The supreme
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 sacrifice
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 seems to him
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 to have been made.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 His work
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 was finished.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 He would
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 therefore pray
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 and now
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 Father
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 glorify me
00:12:32 --> 00:12:32 in your presence
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 with the glory
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 I have with you
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 before the world
00:12:35 --> 00:12:35 began.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 If you are told
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 your death
00:12:40 --> 00:12:40 is only a few
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 hours away,
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 will you have
00:12:43 --> 00:12:43 the confidence
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 to say
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 my life
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 is complete
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 and his work
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 is finished.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 To many of us,
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 life seems to be
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 a pathetic series
00:12:54 --> 00:12:54 of beginnings
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 and failures
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 and imperfect
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 strife
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 and endeavours.
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 However,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 if we do
00:13:01 --> 00:13:01 the will of God,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 the symbol
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 of our life
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 need not to be
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 some broken columns.
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 for someone
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 who had only
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 three years
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 of ministry,
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 only healed a few
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 sick people,
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 preached only a few
00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 sermons,
00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 only 11 followers
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 secured
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 and many
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 deserters,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 no book
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 have written,
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 no church
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 or organisation
00:13:24 --> 00:13:24 established,
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 it seems a bit
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 premature to say
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 my work on earth
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 is finished.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 But the hour
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 has come,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 his work on earth
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 about to finish
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 and he need not
00:13:36 --> 00:13:38 to linger anymore,
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 only the cross
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 remains
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 and the glory
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 fulfilled.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 We follow on
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 in this passage,
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 Jesus pray for,
00:13:49 --> 00:13:49 pray next
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 for his immediate
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 disciples,
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 for the twelve
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 who have followed
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 him and been
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 with him.
00:13:54 --> 00:13:57 this is a very
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 special group
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 of people
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 that have the
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 privilege
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 to be the eyewitnesses
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 of Jesus'
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 ministry on earth.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:05 However,
00:14:06 --> 00:14:06 the term
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 disciples
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 is not just
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 reserved for them.
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 Anyone can be
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 Jesus' disciples,
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 anyone can be
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 counted as a
00:14:15 --> 00:14:15 Christian.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 So have you
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 ever asked
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 who is a
00:14:19 --> 00:14:19 disciple?
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 What does it
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 mean to be a
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 Christian
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 or a follower
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 of Christ?
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 Jesus has
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 provided the
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 answer personally
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 in this prayer
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 for these
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 questions.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 In verse 6
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 to 8,
00:14:33 --> 00:14:33 he identified
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 his followers
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 as those
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 whom God
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 gave him
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 out of the
00:14:38 --> 00:14:38 world,
00:14:39 --> 00:14:39 whom have
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 obeyed God's
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 word.
00:14:42 --> 00:14:42 There are those
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 that accepted
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 the words of God
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 that were given
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 through Jesus
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 and they believed
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 that God
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 sent Jesus
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 and knew with
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 certainty that
00:14:51 --> 00:14:51 Jesus came
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 from God.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 So a disciple
00:14:55 --> 00:14:55 or follower
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 of Jesus,
00:14:57 --> 00:14:57 a Christian,
00:14:58 --> 00:14:58 is one
