00:00:30 --> 00:00:38 This is a radio conversation between the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln
00:00:38 --> 00:00:44 and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 Canadians, come on first.

00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 I demand that you change your course 15 degrees north.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 I say again, that's one five degrees north.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 Or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 There's a bit of a pause in the radio conversation at this point.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 And the Canadians come on.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 This is a lighthouse.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:56 Your call.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:08 There are a number of points in the Bible where we get similar warnings in order to change course
00:02:08 --> 00:02:11 in view of what is up ahead in the future.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:18 And Philippians 3 is one of those passages which has a clear warning in there.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 Amongst the encouragement, there is a clear warning.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:26 This is the fourth installment in our commitment series, Partners for Life.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 The title of this talk is Partners for Eternity.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 However, late last night I decided to change it.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 And I've called it Partners in Going Hard After God.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:42 From Philippians 3, I want to show you why we must go hard after God.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 And I want to encourage you to go hard after God.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:55 And I want to persuade you that the pursuit of God is not optional, even after conversion.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 For this passage is written to Christians.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 The warning is to Christians.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:12 I take it those Paul describes in verse 18 as living as enemies of the cross of Christ
00:03:12 --> 00:03:16 are those who have given up going hard after God.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:20 They are the ones who have given up, pressing forward, pursuing God.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:25 You see, this is a warning that Paul has issued before and he does it here again.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:33 He says it with tears because verse 19 says that the destiny of the enemy of the cross of Christ
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 is destruction.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:40 He could not have used stronger language in issuing this warning.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 The destruction that he has in mind here is eternal destruction.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:48 And that is why we must go hard after God.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:50 Because the warning is clear.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 The destiny you don't want to mess with.
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 Paul says three things about the enemy of the cross of Jesus.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 He says their lives are characterized by three things.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:07 It says here that they have their mind on earthly things.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 Literally, their mind is set on earthly things.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 It's not just they think about them, but they're actually set on earthly things.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 At the very center of their life is the world and its thinking and its priorities.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 They think like the world thinks.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 Their thinking is not directed by the word of God, the Bible,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:31 but by popular culture, by social trends, by what everyone else is doing and thinking.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:36 When there is a clash between the scriptures and popular influences,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 the Bible loses out every time for these people.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 Do you remember what Jesus said to Peter?
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 Very strong warning.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:53 When Peter had his mind on earthly things and tried to discourage Jesus from going to the cross.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 You remember that encounter?
00:04:55 --> 00:05:00 Jesus turned to his best mate and called him the name of his worst enemy.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 Get behind me, Satan.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:04 Why?
00:05:04 --> 00:05:12 Because you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 Your mind is on earthly things.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 You are thinking like everyone else thinks.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:25 Peter wanted Jesus without a cross, but a Jesus without a cross is no savior and he's no lord.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 The enemy of the cross has their mind set on earthly things.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 It also says that they glory in their shame.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:39 The very sins that Jesus died for on the cross are the very things that they continue to do and they continue to delight in.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:45 They may even call themselves Christians, but they don't live it.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 It's like as if those sins don't matter.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:54 To glory in shame is to keep doing the very things that God hates and think it doesn't matter.
00:05:54 --> 00:06:03 It's even to have a strong confidence in that I am saved by grace alone and Jesus is just going to keep forgiving me.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 And my sin doesn't matter.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 It is a blasé approach to holiness.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 The technical term for it is cheap grace.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 It's a blasé approach to the mortification of sin.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 It's to glory in shame.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:25 Of course these people would tick the box on the big sins and go, well, you know, I don't do those things.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:30 List off the Ten Commandments, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, all fine and dandy.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 But what about the acceptable sins?
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 God wants to deal with those things that we find acceptable amongst us.
00:06:38 --> 00:07:01 God wants to deal with those things.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:07 When you go hard after God, those stones get turned over and God wants to deal with them.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:17 It is painful and it is raw to allow God to weed around in those closely held sins because the life of sin is so easy.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 It is so attractive.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 It feels so good.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 But be warned.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 Destiny is destruction.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:35 It also says that the enemy of God has their stomach as their God.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 That is, their gut is their God.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 What that means is they pander their physical desires and urges.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:44 What I feel like doing is what I do.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:48 What I want to do is what I do.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:58 And so the words of Jesus for these people, where he says, deny yourself, take up your cross and come follow me, those words have been forgotten.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:04 They have come to Christ, but don't want to keep denying themselves.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:12 The enemy of the cross of Christ has destruction as their destiny.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:17 Friends, the cross of Christ is where the war on God ended.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:23 It is where Jesus dealt with our sin, forgave our sin, forgave our rebellion.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:30 And it is only, only through Jesus that we are ever able to escape the destiny of destruction.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 So why go hard after God in Christ?
00:08:36 --> 00:08:42 Because destruction is the destiny of those who don't.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 And do you hear the warning of this passage?
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 It's not just saying, yeah, I trust in Jesus, I believe in Jesus.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 And leaving it at that.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 It is going hard after God because he's gone hard after me.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 Moment by moment, day by day, week after week, month after month, year after year.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:09 We also get another reason why we should go hard after God in verse 20.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:15 But our citizenship is in heaven and we eagerly await a saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:19 who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:23 will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:31 The alternative destination is citizenship of heaven, where the Lord Jesus reigns.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 And that is why we should go hard after God.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 Because it is where Jesus is.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 Citizenship is crucial.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 It is very important.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:43 And by and large, it is something that most of us take for granted.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:47 It's something we didn't take for granted at the end of last year,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 when we were pursuing citizenship for some of our members.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 Life and death were at stake.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 That is how important citizenship is.
00:09:57 --> 00:10:02 But when you're born in a country like Australia, you just take it for granted.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 Until you go to the United States and then you appreciate it a little bit more.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:14 Citizenship is crucial because it provides protection and care and significance.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 If you are a refugee, a citizen of no country,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:21 and there is no one to protect you,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:26 all of a sudden life becomes very, very nervous.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 For instance, over 100 years ago,
00:10:34 --> 00:10:39 a Spanish court condemned to death a man for a crime that he apparently committed.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:44 However, this man was an American citizen and he was British by birth.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:49 And the two ambassadors of those respective countries said,
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 you cannot condemn this man to death.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 The Spanish basically ignored that.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:59 And they marched him out to put him up against the wall
00:10:59 --> 00:11:02 to kill him by firing squad.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 Right behind the firing squad
00:11:05 --> 00:11:09 came the ambassadors of those two countries.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 They walked out with them
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 and they each had a flag
00:11:13 --> 00:11:17 and they wrapped the man in one of their respective country flags
00:11:17 --> 00:11:21 as he stood there on the wall of the firing squad.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 And the two ambassadors said,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 we dare you to fire a shot.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 If you fire a shot,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 we will bring both of our empires down on top of Spain.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 And the guns were lowered
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 and they all walked away.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:43 That is what citizenship does for you.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:47 There he was standing in front of a bunch of guys
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 with guns aimed at him
00:11:49 --> 00:11:52 and he was wrapped in simple cotton
00:11:52 --> 00:11:56 and yet he might as well have been wearing armour plating.
00:11:57 --> 00:12:00 He was impervious to destruction.
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 As a friend of the cross,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 you are impervious to destruction.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:10 Trusting Jesus means that your citizenship is in heaven
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 and your destiny is not destruction.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 Instead of destruction,
00:12:15 --> 00:12:18 in fact, it's a new body fit for eternity
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 is what it says there.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 Did you see that?
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 He's not just changing us on the inside,
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 that's what he's doing now,
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 but he's actually going to give us bodies
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 which are completely new,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 fit for eternity in heaven.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 Bodies that don't need to cry.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 Bodies that won't feel unloved.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 Bodies that won't feel lonely.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 Bodies that won't feel sad.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 Bodies that will never grow tired.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 Bodies that won't break down on you.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 Notice too that Paul didn't say
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 that your citizenship will be in heaven.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 It is because Christ has already grabbed hold of you,
00:12:54 --> 00:12:56 your citizenship is in heaven.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:59 If you're a Christian,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:02 you are already a citizen of heaven.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:05 You are already impervious to destruction.
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 That is the home that you are heading for.
00:13:09 --> 00:13:11 And that is why the citizen of heaven,
00:13:11 --> 00:13:14 who understands that they are a citizen of heaven,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 don't just wait.
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 They eagerly wait.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:23 They eagerly wait for their saviour to come.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:27 We are eagerly busting to be there
00:13:27 --> 00:13:29 because it's where Jesus is.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:33 Verses 12 to 16 show us
00:13:33 --> 00:13:36 what this eagerly waiting looks like.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:38 And let me say that these verses
00:13:38 --> 00:13:41 explode the false logic
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 that says if Christ has found us,
00:13:44 --> 00:13:46 we don't need to find him anymore.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 We no longer need to seek him
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 if we have been found by Christ.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 Paul's reasoning is in fact the exact opposite.
00:13:56 --> 00:13:59 I press on in order to gain Christ
00:13:59 --> 00:14:02 because Christ has already gained me.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 Verse 12,
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 not that I've already obtained all this
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 or have already been made perfect,
00:14:12 --> 00:14:15 but I press on to take hold of that
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 Brothers, I do not consider myself
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 yet to have taken hold of it.
00:14:20 --> 00:14:20 One thing I do,
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 forgetting what is behind
00:14:22 --> 00:14:24 and straining towards what is ahead,
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 I press on towards the goal
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 to win the prize
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 which God has called me heavenward
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 in Christ Jesus.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 All of us who are mature
00:14:32 --> 00:14:34 should take such a view of things
00:14:34 --> 00:14:37 and if on some point you think differently,
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 that too God will make clear to you.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:41 Only let us live up
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 to what we have already attained.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 You see,
00:14:46 --> 00:14:50 Paul did not see his conversion to Christ
00:14:50 --> 00:14:53 as a cage to hold him back
00:14:53 --> 00:14:56 but as a catapult to pursue righteousness.
00:14:59 --> 00:15:02 The irresistible grace of Christ
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 overcoming Paul's rebellion
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 did not make Paul passive.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:10 It made him powerful
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 in pursuing holiness.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:17 The best commentary on these verses
00:15:17 --> 00:15:19 I think is back in chapter 2,
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 verses 12 and 13
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 which says,
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 work out your salvation.
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 Work at it,
00:15:24 --> 00:15:24 work at it,
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 work at it.
00:15:25 --> 00:15:25 Why?
00:15:26 --> 00:15:28 Because it is God who is working in you.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:33 In calling Christians
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 to go hard after God,
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 Paul in no way
00:15:38 --> 00:15:41 undermines salvation by grace alone.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:45 He simply confirms it.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:49 Twice in these verses
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 he affirms it is God
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 who has taken hold of him.
00:15:52 --> 00:15:54 But in the very same verses
00:15:54 --> 00:15:56 he calls us to take hold of Christ,
00:15:56 --> 00:15:56 to pursue,
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 to press on,
00:16:00 --> 00:16:02 go hard after God.
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 You see what Paul's saying here?
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 Our work
00:16:09 --> 00:16:11 in pursuing God
00:16:11 --> 00:16:13 is his work
00:16:13 --> 00:16:15 for his glory
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 when done
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 in dependence
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 on his sovereign grace.
00:16:18 --> 00:16:21 I'll say that again.
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 Our work
00:16:24 --> 00:16:27 is his work
00:16:27 --> 00:16:29 for his glory
00:16:29 --> 00:16:31 when done
00:16:31 --> 00:16:31 in dependence
00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 on his
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 sovereign grace.
00:16:36 --> 00:16:38 The most fundamental reason
00:16:38 --> 00:16:40 why the Christian
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 must go hard
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 after Christ
00:16:42 --> 00:16:44 is that Christ
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 is in them
00:16:45 --> 00:16:47 moving them
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 to go hard
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 after him.
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 And it's in this
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 that Paul sets himself up
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 as a model to follow
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 in verse 17.
00:16:58 --> 00:16:58 He says,
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 follow my example,
00:16:59 --> 00:16:59 brothers,
00:17:00 --> 00:17:00 and take note
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 of those who live
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 according to the pattern
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 that we gave you.
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 What was the pattern
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 of life for Paul?
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 Verse 10,
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 I want to know Christ
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 and the power
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 of his resurrection
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 and the fellowship
00:17:12 --> 00:17:12 of sharing
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 in his sufferings,
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 becoming like him
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 in his death,
00:17:16 --> 00:17:16 and so somehow
00:17:16 --> 00:17:18 to attain
00:17:18 --> 00:17:18 the resurrection
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 from the dead.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:20 What was Paul's
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 pattern of life?
00:17:23 --> 00:17:25 I just want to know
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 Jesus
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 and I want to be
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 like Jesus.
00:17:31 --> 00:17:32 His whole focus
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 in life
00:17:33 --> 00:17:33 was being made
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 more and more
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 like Jesus
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 until the day
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 he meets Jesus
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 face to face.
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 For me to live
00:17:40 --> 00:17:40 is Christ
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 and to die
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 is gain
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 is what he said
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 in chapter 1
00:17:44 --> 00:17:44 verse 21.
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 It is a spurious
00:17:47 --> 00:17:47 logic
00:17:47 --> 00:17:49 which insists
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 that if we
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 have found Christ
00:17:51 --> 00:17:53 we no more
00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 need to seek Christ.
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 As one writer
00:17:56 --> 00:17:57 put it last century,
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 to have found God
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 and still
00:18:00 --> 00:18:01 to pursue him
00:18:01 --> 00:18:03 is the soul's
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 paradox
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 of love.
00:18:06 --> 00:18:06 Scorned
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 indeed
00:18:07 --> 00:18:07 by the two
00:18:07 --> 00:18:09 easily satisfied
00:18:09 --> 00:18:09 religiousists
00:18:09 --> 00:18:12 but justified
00:18:12 --> 00:18:13 in happy
00:18:13 --> 00:18:13 experience
00:18:13 --> 00:18:14 by the children
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 with a burning
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 heart.
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 Or
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 put probably
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 more simply
00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 by another guy
00:18:23 --> 00:18:23 who was even
00:18:23 --> 00:18:24 older than him
00:18:24 --> 00:18:26 wherever
00:18:26 --> 00:18:28 there is
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 true grace
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 there is a
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 desire
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 for more
00:18:32 --> 00:18:32 grace.
00:18:32 --> 00:18:32 grace.
00:18:37 --> 00:18:37 Wherever
00:18:37 --> 00:18:38 there is
00:18:38 --> 00:18:39 true grace
00:18:39 --> 00:18:39 there is
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 a desire
00:18:40 --> 00:18:40 for more
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 grace.
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 The evidence
