00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 As I said to Chris and to you earlier,
00:00:12 --> 00:00:14 we got off the plane late Friday,
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 so we're both suffering heavily from jet lag still.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:24 So as Paul asks the Ephesians to do in chapter four,
00:00:25 --> 00:00:26 please bear with me.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 Now, I'll just read this passage out to you.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 Ephesians chapter four, verses one to 16.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 As a prisoner for the Lord, then I urge you to live a life
00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 worthy of the calling you have received.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 Be completely humble and gentle.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 Be patient, bearing with one another in love.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit
00:00:46 --> 00:00:48 through the bond of peace.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:50 There is one body, one spirit,
00:00:51 --> 00:00:53 just as you were called to one hope when you were called.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:57 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and father of all
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 who is over all and through all and in all.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 But to each one of us, grace has been given
00:01:05 --> 00:01:06 as Christ has apportioned it.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:08 And this is why it says,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:11 when he ascended on high, he led captives in his train
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 and gave gifts to men.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 What does he ascended mean?
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 Except that he also descended to the lower earthly regions.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:22 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 than all the heavens in order to fill the whole universe.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 It was he who gave some to be apostles,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:31 some to be prophets,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 some to be evangelists,
00:01:33 --> 00:01:34 and some to be pastors and teachers
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 to prepare God's people for works of service
00:01:37 --> 00:01:40 so that the body of Christ may be built up
00:01:40 --> 00:01:42 until we all reach unity in the faith
00:01:42 --> 00:01:44 and in the knowledge of the Son of God
00:01:44 --> 00:01:45 and become mature,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 Then we will no longer be infants,
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 tossed back and forth by the waves
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 and blown here and there by every wind of teaching
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 and by the cunning and craftiness of men
00:01:57 --> 00:01:59 in their deceitful scheming.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:02 Instead, speaking the truth in love,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 we will in all things grow up into him
00:02:04 --> 00:02:07 who is the head, that is Christ.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 From him the whole body,
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 joined and held together by every supporting ligament,
00:02:11 --> 00:02:13 grows and builds itself up in love
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 as each part does its work.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:17 Now this is the word of the Lord.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 Let's move that out of the way.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 So Vanessa and I have been working,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 as many of you, most of you will know,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:30 with African Enterprise.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:34 Initially we started working there in 2007
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 with the Pan-African Missions Department
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 from the Malawi office
00:02:39 --> 00:02:43 and in 2010 we moved down to the city of Peter Maritzburg
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:51 And last year I volunteered for the Leadership Training Centre
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 and Vanessa continued her work on
00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 in the Communications Department,
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 heading up the international communications
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 for the organisation.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 And we decided that,
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 well we both really felt that the Lord was telling us
00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 that it was time to finish our time with African Enterprise.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 As many of you will be aware,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 African Enterprise has just celebrated
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 their 50th anniversary of ministry in Africa.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:18 And to celebrate that,
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 in conjunction with the local churches of Peter Maritzburg,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 they held a city-wide mission in the city
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 where it all started back in 1962
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 with Dr. Michael Cassidy.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:32 And the Lord really said to us
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 that he wanted us to actually be there
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 for the city-wide mission
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 and help out as much as we could.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 And then after that we would move on.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 And it was then we had the offer.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 Well first of all it was then we actually found out
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 that Vanessa was pregnant with Benjamin.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 And it was then also we had the offer
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 to move to Cape Town
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 and work alongside George Whitfield College.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 So it's a great time of heavy changes for us.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 And it has been a very interesting time
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 in post-apartheid South Africa.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 South Africa, there is no doubt
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 it is still suffering from a heavy hangover
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 from the apartheid regime.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 And that regime really goes back to the 1700s
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 where the Boas came in
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 and started taking over the land
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 from the Bantu and the Koi people
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 and with the force of shotguns.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 And because they had their land taken off them
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 which was their livelihood
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 and everything they had
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 they were forced to work
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 for these new white people
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 who then basically lauded it over them
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 and the rest is history.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 In 1946
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 75 people
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 went on strike
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 because miners
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 black African miners
00:04:48 --> 00:04:49 were receiving
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 a twelfth of the wage
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 that white South African miners
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 were receiving.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 75 people went on strike
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 an unarmed protest
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 and
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 the police
00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 met it
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 with violence
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 and a thousand people
00:05:04 --> 00:05:04 were killed
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 or injured
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 during that
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 uprising
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 to try and get
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 more wages
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 for black South African workers.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 In August
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 2012
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 3 people
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 who were miners
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 they were getting paid
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 very little money
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 and they were really being
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 discriminated against
00:05:26 --> 00:05:26 in the wages
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 they were receiving
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 they were marginalised
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 they were being unfairly treated
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 and they stopped work
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 3 of them went on strike
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 and the police
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 responded to their protests
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 by killing 34 of them
00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 shooting 34 of them dead
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 and
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 another 80 of them
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 were injured
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 and wounded
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 so South Africa
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 is suffering heavily
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 from a hangover
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 from apartheid
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 and needs your prayers
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 desperately
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 that that nation
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 will
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 be able to get
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 through the resentments
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 and the bitterness
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 of the past
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 which leads to so much
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 hatred and violence
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 within the country.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 But South Africa
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 the secular world
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 is not the only place
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 that that resentment
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 and bitterness
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 can be found
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 and unfortunately
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 that has gone through
00:06:15 --> 00:06:16 into the church
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 and while we were there
00:06:18 --> 00:06:18 in the lead up
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 to the citywide mission
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 many of the churches
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 who were involved
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 in the citywide mission
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 came together
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 the pastors
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 from the church's
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 assorted denominations
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 and assorted colours
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 to meet with
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 a fraternal
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 a black South African fraternal
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 known as the Indemasa Fellowship
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 and the meeting
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 was because
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 the Indemasa Fellowship
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 did not want
00:06:39 --> 00:06:39 to actually
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 minister alongside
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 the rest of these guys
00:06:43 --> 00:06:43 because
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 they felt that
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 during the apartheid
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 era
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 that they had been
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 mistreated
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 by the other pastors
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 that these pastors
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 had supported apartheid
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 and there was still
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 bitterness
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 and hurt
00:06:56 --> 00:06:56 and resentment
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 between
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 and enmity
00:06:59 --> 00:06:59 between
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 the actual
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 racial groups
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 within the church
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 and
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 this meant
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 that they then
00:07:07 --> 00:07:07 went through
00:07:07 --> 00:07:07 a process
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 of reconciliation
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 which started
00:07:10 --> 00:07:10 before the mission
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 and is continuing
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 on and will
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 continue on
00:07:13 --> 00:07:13 hopefully
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 for a couple
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 of years to come
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 but the good news
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 is the process
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 of reconciliation
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 has begun
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 but even
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 African Enterprise
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 was not exempt
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 from the
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 racial
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 hurt
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 and
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 feelings
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 of bitterness
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 and feelings
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 of resentment
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 towards
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 different people
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 groups
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 and it was
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 so strong
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 that in the times
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 where I was asked
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 to preach
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 at devotions
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 on three separate
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 occasions
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 the Lord
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 put on my heart
00:07:44 --> 00:07:44 to preach
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 on the topic
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 of unity
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 in the body
00:07:47 --> 00:07:47 of Christ
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 and the first time
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 I preached
00:07:51 --> 00:07:51 on the topic
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 of what it was
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 to be truly
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 great in Christ
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 and today
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 I'm going to
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 I'm not going to
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 exegete the passages
00:08:00 --> 00:08:00 if you want to find

00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 is problematic
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 so forgive me

00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 one is about
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 two different
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 groups of people
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 who are racially
00:08:43 --> 00:08:43 different
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 the
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 obviously
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 the black
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 South Africans
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 and the non-blacks
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 but
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 the other
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 is the Jews
00:08:53 --> 00:08:53 and the Gentiles
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 who basically
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 have different
00:08:55 --> 00:08:55 beliefs
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 so the analogy
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 is problematic
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 but there's also
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 a lot of similarities
