00:00:05 --> 00:00:11 Like seriously, seriously, dangerously, you're feeling it, you're sick, thirsty.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:17 Why don't you stand up, give yourself 20 seconds, turn to the person you've come with or people
00:00:17 --> 00:00:22 that you know around you, stand up and just share that story, share that time where you've
00:00:22 --> 00:00:23 really, really felt it right now.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:31 So drinking is actually really important.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:38 I'm one of the pastors here, my name is Nick, I'm used to playing the guitar at the front
00:00:38 --> 00:00:42 and leading and doing a bit of stuff behind the scenes.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:47 I'm not used to being at the front, whenever I get up in front of people my voice just dries
00:00:47 --> 00:00:52 up, it's like a desert and I need to drink, so I'm actually really nervous and thirsty
00:00:52 --> 00:00:53 right now.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:57 But we really need water, don't we?
00:00:57 --> 00:01:02 It's actually something that gets painful pretty quick and we're dead in two or three
00:01:02 --> 00:01:03 days if we don't get it.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:11 We're completely in need and we can go without sleep or food or light, like when you go to
00:01:11 --> 00:01:12 Katoomba and go on kick.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:19 You can even go without human contact for weeks on end, but you can't go without water.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 After we breathe, we need to drink and everyone knows that thirst.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:33 Our thirst for water is mirrored in us in heaps of different ways, other desires in our life.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:40 And I'm sure you know a kind of thirst for other things, for practical needs and extravagant
00:01:40 --> 00:01:41 desires.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:48 Under the surface, these desires that are in us, under the surface of those, we're all chasing
00:01:48 --> 00:01:49 satisfaction.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 We long to be satisfied.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:57 If we can't get no satisfaction, then we're discontent.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 Now I know discontent and you know it too.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:03 Our discontentedness demands action.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 It says get happy and quick and it looks like a whole bunch of things.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:13 It can be, I think for me, it's tiredness and hunger and apathy.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:14 It's lots of things.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 We want to fill our lives with things.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:26 When I get tired and anxious, I raid the fridge and I put a TV show on and entertain myself.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:27 I escape.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:35 Those things I think I know won't satisfy me, but they're good distractions for my thirstiness.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:40 What does your discontent look like?
00:02:41 --> 00:02:49 Finish the sentence, I'd be satisfied if only I had.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 I'd be satisfied if only I was or looked like.
00:02:56 --> 00:03:08 What do you pursue to remove that discontentedness that you feel, that thirst in you?
00:03:08 --> 00:03:15 And may I suggest today, and this is actually really exciting, that there is an end available
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 to our thirst.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 Somewhere to run to for water that can fill us up.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:27 A source to go to where we are satisfied forever, to return to ongoing, into eternity, and free
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 for absolutely everyone.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 That's a pretty big talk.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 But the exciting thing is that we get to come to a pretty big God.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:40 So I need to hear about what this water is as much as you guys.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 And we're all among the thirsty today.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:43 You guys stood up and talked pretty loudly.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:45 So I assume you know what I'm talking about.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:50 So let's pray for God's help to hear him over what I say today.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 Let's pray.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 Lord God, we come to you as thirsty people with longing in us.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:03 We long to be satisfied, God, and I pray today that you would do that by your spirit,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:08 by the truth of your gospel.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:08 Amen.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:18 Guys, our yearning and our satisfaction, our thirst, is actually a really good thing.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 It's created in us.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 It's not an accident.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 It's given to us by God.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:30 And he didn't leave it as an unhelpful little burden that we have to carry.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:37 We thirst for God because he satisfies.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:42 If we only knew our creator completely, we would not have yearnings.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 We would not need endlessly.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 We would not thirst our way through this life.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:53 But naturally, humans thirst for everything but God.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 And we chase after the wrong things.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:58 We've got to somehow come back to God and get satisfied again.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 We're only ever going to be satisfied in God.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 And this matters.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:10 God did not come to tell us to ignore the desires in us for satisfaction.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 He wants our discontent quenched.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:20 He came to turn us around from our sin, to bring us back to the source that we were made to come to
00:05:20 --> 00:05:25 and provide us satisfaction and joy that's going to last.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 In the beginning, it was Adam and Eve.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:36 They had full access to God and full satisfaction in Him.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:44 That was a wonderful relationship where they had complete access to God.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 They thirsted for nothing.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 They worshipped with their whole lives.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:52 They were enamored by God's creation, His perfection and His presence.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 They were satisfied in Him.
00:05:53 --> 00:06:02 But ever since Adam and Eve chose to find their satisfaction elsewhere, we have followed them.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:07 Our sin cost us that access to God and we lost our satisfaction.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 Jesus knew this.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:16 He knew that we were without access to God and the satisfaction that that brings.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 Look at Jesus' prayer for us in Matthew 11.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:23 It's going to be on the screen.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:24 There it is.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:30 No one knows the Son except the Father and no one knows the Father except the Son
00:06:30 --> 00:06:36 and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:45 Every one of us take our first breath of life into that situation.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 We're born without access to God.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:56 And with the discontentedness and thirst that comes from that, nobody knew Jesus when He came
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 and only Jesus knew the Father.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 It's going to take God for us to know God.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:06 It's a bit confusing, but honestly, we're out of that loop.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 We're all undeserving.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:13 It's going to take an act of grace for us to ever know God.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:16 Unless God acts, we go on thirsting.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:20 Unless He meets our needs, we're going to stay in need.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:26 Unless God has a way for me to be satisfied beyond my abilities to do so,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 I'm going to stay anxious and weak.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:31 Unless God is your way to satisfaction,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:35 every underlying thirst and need in you is going to go unmet.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:42 So let's come together as thirsty people and see what God is going to offer us.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 John 4.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:49 If you don't have your Bible out or a screen on a phone or something in front of you, get it.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 Put your hand up.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 Someone will find you a Bible if you don't have it.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 I'm going to be jumping around in John 4.
00:07:54 --> 00:08:00 The situation is two people meeting near a well in Samaria.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 One of those was a woman getting water.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 The other was Jesus.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 The woman was a local Samaritan.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 Here's what we know about her.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 She had been in and out of marriages more than most people.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:24 She struggled with life and that wearisome daily trek to go get water.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:29 And she worried if she really knew who God was.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:35 She thirsted for much more than the water in her jar.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 She was discontent.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 She's just like us.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:43 Guys, today, right now, put yourself in her place.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:48 Because like her, we get tired of everything.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 We struggle with sin.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 And we're reaching out for God in some way.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 We're thirsty like her.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 We are her.
00:08:57 --> 00:09:01 But because God is gracious and for no merited reason,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:11 Jesus chose this woman on that day to be offered complete, lasting, eternal satisfaction.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 The first to be offered that.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 He starts the conversation.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 Will you give me a drink?
00:09:22 --> 00:09:26 It's astonishing that Jesus would do this.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:32 It is crazy culturally for him to step out and start that conversation.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:38 A Jew would never address a Samaritan.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 Wouldn't speak to them.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:47 They would never drink from a Samaritan's cup when they'd made or touched or even been seen near.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 A Jewish man would never address a woman in public.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:58 And in verse 27, his disciples were astonished that he'd been talking to her.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:02 But Jesus saw her.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:07 He saw and validated her need.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:12 He shows us that we're all in her place.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:15 Not just culturally, but actually without him.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 He came for us all.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:23 Now, when Jesus says, will he give me a drink?
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 Do you think he's just asking for water?
00:10:26 --> 00:10:33 Honestly, I think he was actually thirsty for a drink.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 It's hot in that part of the world.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 Like, desert hot.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:41 Like, hotter than Sydney in the humidity in February.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:41 Hot.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 It is crazy hot there.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 And I bet Jesus knew a real human thirst.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 But he didn't thirst for God like we do.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:53 He knew God and was satisfied.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:58 He was drinking and eating like us while completely satisfied.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:01 In God.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:08 Jesus proved to this woman, 17 and 18, that's on the screen.
00:11:08 --> 00:11:16 He proved that he had access to God because he knows secrets about this woman that only God could know.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:19 Hidden things about her relationships.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 And we see later that that's proof for her.
00:11:23 --> 00:11:27 She says later, he told me everything about everything I'd ever done.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 He didn't.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:33 He gave her a short list of things that proved to her that he knew God.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 He is not thirsty like we are.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:40 But he is full of grace and mercy and compassion.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:46 He started the conversation that she could not start and that we can't.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:51 To show us that he offers us satisfaction.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:57 I've always been amazed at Jesus' ability with fasting and food.
00:11:57 --> 00:12:03 I can barely even make lunch for my kids with a full fridge of food.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 I'm useless when it comes to doing the simplest things like that.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:11 But Jesus can make food for 5 people.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 Bam!
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 It's there.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 That's incredible.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:17 And he can go for weeks without eating.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:21 I can't go for more than about an hour and I feel like I'm going to die.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:26 But Jesus went weeks in the desert without food.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:34 It amazes me what physical needs Jesus could put aside while satisfied with God.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 He talks about it in verse 32.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:44 He says he has food that we don't understand.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:49 He is completely satisfied in God.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:53 But, and this is incredible.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:58 And if you're really tired, just catch this today because it's so incredible.
00:12:59 --> 00:13:03 He didn't hold on to that satisfaction.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:08 He actually gave it up so that we could have it.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 Look with me at John 19.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 It's going to be on the screen.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:15 Stay in John 4 on your tablet or your Bible.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 Look up here.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:20 Later, knowing this is Jesus on the cross.
00:13:21 --> 00:13:25 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished
00:13:25 --> 00:13:28 and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 Jesus said,
00:13:30 --> 00:13:33 I am thirsty.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:43 The God who was satisfied beyond needing anything at all,
00:13:44 --> 00:13:48 stooped down to identify with our needs and become a man
00:13:48 --> 00:13:52 and on the cross took on our thirst for God.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 I don't think he's saying,
00:13:56 --> 00:14:01 as he gasps for breath and bleeds out on the cross,
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 I don't think he's saying,
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 I'd really like a glass of cold water, guys.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 This sucks.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:12 He is putting his satisfaction in God aside
00:14:12 --> 00:14:17 as the Father turns his face away from him on the cross
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 because he's wearing a sin.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:28 So we would never have to be thirsty and without God ever again.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 That is amazing.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:36 Jesus became thirsty for us
00:14:36 --> 00:14:41 so that he can offer us this drink
00:14:41 --> 00:14:44 that we hear about in John 4.
00:14:44 --> 00:14:47 Let's see what he's offering us exactly.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 John 4 verse 10.
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 Have a look with me.
00:14:52 --> 00:14:54 If you knew the gift of God
00:14:54 --> 00:14:57 and who it is that asks you for a drink,
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 you would have asked him
00:15:00 --> 00:15:03 and he would have given you living water.
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 Jump to verse 13.
00:15:05 --> 00:15:10 Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
00:15:10 --> 00:15:13 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.
00:15:13 --> 00:15:16 Indeed, the water I give them will become in them
00:15:16 --> 00:15:20 a spring of living water welling up to eternal life.
00:15:22 --> 00:15:27 Jesus was promising to quench this woman's thirst forever.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 What did he mean?
00:15:29 --> 00:15:32 It's clear in the story
00:15:32 --> 00:15:36 that the woman thought she knew what he meant.
00:15:38 --> 00:15:40 She asks for this mysterious water
00:15:40 --> 00:15:44 so she'd no longer have to go out every day
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 and get water for herself.
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 That's exactly what we would do.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:49 We would take our understanding of God
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 and then demand it of him.
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 Give me a drink, Jesus.
00:15:54 --> 00:15:57 She's thinking like Spielberg
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:02 You know, the chase for the Holy Grail,
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 the cup of Christ.
00:16:04 --> 00:16:07 Assuming that drinking from a cup that Jesus offered
00:16:07 --> 00:16:10 would keep us young and alive on earth.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:13 But Jesus is promising us so much more
00:16:13 --> 00:16:16 than something so silly as that.
00:16:16 --> 00:16:20 He's actually promising access to the living God,
00:16:20 --> 00:16:23 not just a long-term hydration solution,
00:16:24 --> 00:16:28 but a longer-than-life-long satisfaction.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:33 So how do I get this living water
00:16:33 --> 00:16:36 if it's not from a cup that Jesus offers?
00:16:37 --> 00:16:39 Not a literal cup.
00:16:40 --> 00:16:42 Look again at verse 10.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 Look at how it starts.
00:16:46 --> 00:16:46 It begins,
00:16:46 --> 00:16:48 if you knew.
00:16:50 --> 00:16:53 It seems that knowing God
00:16:53 --> 00:16:55 is the way to get this drink.
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 The woman caught the cue
00:16:57 --> 00:16:59 about knowing God.
00:16:59 --> 00:17:02 When I read this passage,
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 I didn't.
00:17:03 --> 00:17:05 I got really confused
00:17:05 --> 00:17:07 as to what this woman asked Jesus.
00:17:08 --> 00:17:10 If someone comes up to you,
00:17:10 --> 00:17:12 tells you all your hidden secrets
00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 of your life,
00:17:13 --> 00:17:16 and then kind of leaves
00:17:16 --> 00:17:18 the conversation open,
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 you can ask them anything.
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 What would you ask for?
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 What answers to life
00:17:22 --> 00:17:24 would you demand from that person?
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 And I'd probably say,
00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 how do I,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:29 you know,
00:17:29 --> 00:17:31 get more money?
00:17:33 --> 00:17:36 Or can you help me
00:17:36 --> 00:17:38 with all the stuff
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 that I do wrong?
00:17:39 --> 00:17:42 Or can you help me?
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 I've got a list of like
00:17:45 --> 00:17:47 a zillion practical things
00:17:47 --> 00:17:47 that I could think of.
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 I want this,
00:17:48 --> 00:17:48 I want that,
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 I want a guitar,
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 I want my kids to be healthy,
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 I want to be secure for life.
00:17:51 --> 00:17:55 But she gets this cue,
00:17:56 --> 00:17:57 she wants to know
00:17:57 --> 00:17:59 if she really knows God.
00:17:59 --> 00:18:01 She asks a religion question.
00:18:02 --> 00:18:04 I always found that really weird,
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 but she gets this cue
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 about knowing God.
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 She was convinced
00:18:07 --> 00:18:09 about Jesus' connection.
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 Why not see
00:18:11 --> 00:18:15 if she knows God
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 like he does?
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 So she asked him
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 if Samaria's way
00:18:19 --> 00:18:20 of knowing God,
00:18:20 --> 00:18:21 their religious practices
00:18:21 --> 00:18:23 were correct.
00:18:23 --> 00:18:24 Because if they were right,
00:18:24 --> 00:18:26 then she'd already have access
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 to this water, right?
00:18:27 --> 00:18:27 Right?
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 Often people think
00:18:30 --> 00:18:32 that religion
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 is about having our lives
00:18:33 --> 00:18:35 in order already
00:18:35 --> 00:18:38 to get us access to God.
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 Surely Jesus will just
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 tell us here
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 who is right
00:18:42 --> 00:18:44 and who really knows him
00:18:44 --> 00:18:45 so we can all get on board
00:18:45 --> 00:18:46 with that one religion
00:18:46 --> 00:18:47 and then move on, right?
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 No.
00:18:49 --> 00:18:51 He says it's no longer
00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 about how you get access
00:18:53 --> 00:18:53 to God,
00:18:53 --> 00:18:55 but who is
00:18:55 --> 00:18:57 your access to God.
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 Not a list of things
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 to do
00:18:59 --> 00:19:00 to know God.
00:19:00 --> 00:19:01 He
00:19:01 --> 00:19:02 is
00:19:02 --> 00:19:04 how we know God.
00:19:05 --> 00:19:06 He is
00:19:06 --> 00:19:07 our access to God
00:19:07 --> 00:19:08 and it's by his grace,
00:19:08 --> 00:19:10 not by what we do.
00:19:11 --> 00:19:12 He is offering
00:19:12 --> 00:19:14 to meet our greatest need
00:19:14 --> 00:19:14 in him.
00:19:14 --> 00:19:18 So let's look at
00:19:18 --> 00:19:19 Jesus' answer
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 to our discontentedness.
00:19:21 --> 00:19:22 How will Jesus
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 do for us
00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 what we need?
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 And the answer
00:19:26 --> 00:19:27 is in two words,
00:19:27 --> 00:19:28 spirit
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 and truth.
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 Look at verse 21
00:19:31 --> 00:19:31 with me.
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 It's going to be
00:19:32 --> 00:19:32 on the screen as well.
00:19:32 --> 00:19:36 Woman,
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 Jesus replied,
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 believe me,
00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 a time is coming
00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 when you will worship
00:19:40 --> 00:19:40 the Father
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 neither on this mountain
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 nor in Jerusalem.
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 You Samaritans
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 worship what you do not know.
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 We worship what we do know
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 for salvation
00:19:48 --> 00:19:50 comes from the Jews.
00:19:50 --> 00:19:50 Yet,
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 a time is coming
00:19:52 --> 00:19:54 and has now come

00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 things that we need
00:20:27 --> 00:20:28 to get satisfaction

00:20:29 --> 00:20:30 So first,
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 the spirit.
00:20:33 --> 00:20:35 God inflames
00:20:35 --> 00:20:36 our hearts
00:20:36 --> 00:20:36 to faith
00:20:36 --> 00:20:38 by the Holy Spirit.
00:20:38 --> 00:20:39 He confirms
00:20:39 --> 00:20:40 we're saved
00:20:40 --> 00:20:41 by the Holy Spirit's
00:20:41 --> 00:20:42 dwelling in us.
00:20:43 --> 00:20:43 He speaks
00:20:43 --> 00:20:44 through his word
00:20:44 --> 00:20:45 in the Bible
00:20:45 --> 00:20:46 by his spirit.
00:20:47 --> 00:20:48 And the spirit
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 is a Christian's
00:20:49 --> 00:20:50 connection
00:20:50 --> 00:20:51 to God.

00:23:44 --> 00:23:45 gospel.
00:23:45 --> 00:23:46 The gospel
00:23:46 --> 00:23:46 becomes our
00:23:46 --> 00:23:47 joy and
00:23:47 --> 00:23:48 our motivation.
00:23:49 --> 00:23:49 It becomes
00:23:49 --> 00:23:50 the source
00:23:50 --> 00:23:51 of our
00:23:51 --> 00:23:51 worship.
00:23:52 --> 00:23:53 But it is
00:23:53 --> 00:23:54 only by the
00:23:54 --> 00:23:55 spirit that we
00:23:55 --> 00:23:56 come at all.
00:23:57 --> 00:23:58 The spirit
00:23:58 --> 00:23:58 is our
00:23:58 --> 00:23:59 reminder of
00:23:59 --> 00:24:00 the gospel's
00:24:00 --> 00:24:01 effectiveness.
00:24:02 --> 00:24:02 The spirit
00:24:02 --> 00:24:03 speaks through
00:24:03 --> 00:24:04 God's word.
00:24:04 --> 00:24:05 The spirit
00:24:05 --> 00:24:06 inspires our
00:24:06 --> 00:24:06 prayers.
00:24:07 --> 00:24:08 The spirit
00:24:08 --> 00:24:08 guides us,
00:24:08 --> 00:24:09 inspires,
00:24:10 --> 00:24:10 upholds,
00:24:10 --> 00:24:11 holds,
00:24:11 --> 00:24:12 and remains
00:24:12 --> 00:24:13 with us.
00:24:14 --> 00:24:15 Together the
00:24:15 --> 00:24:16 gospel and
00:24:16 --> 00:24:17 spirit satisfy
00:24:17 --> 00:24:18 because through
00:24:18 --> 00:24:19 them, through
00:24:19 --> 00:24:21 the door, by
00:24:21 --> 00:24:21 the hand of
00:24:21 --> 00:24:23 God, we
00:24:23 --> 00:24:24 get God.
00:24:26 --> 00:24:26 And we
00:24:26 --> 00:24:27 know we're
00:24:27 --> 00:24:28 satisfied because
00:24:28 --> 00:24:29 our satisfaction
00:24:29 --> 00:24:32 overflows in
00:24:32 --> 00:24:33 worship.
00:24:33 --> 00:24:39 have you
00:24:39 --> 00:24:41 ever had a
00:24:41 --> 00:24:41 really nice
00:24:41 --> 00:24:44 cold drink of
00:24:44 --> 00:24:44 water on a
00:24:44 --> 00:24:45 sweltering day?
00:24:46 --> 00:24:48 For me, it's
00:24:48 --> 00:24:49 a cold beer
00:24:49 --> 00:24:50 with dinner
00:24:50 --> 00:24:51 because,
00:24:52 --> 00:24:52 honestly,
00:24:53 --> 00:24:54 that's as good
00:24:54 --> 00:24:54 as it gets
00:24:54 --> 00:24:55 for me.
00:24:56 --> 00:24:57 Do you know
00:24:57 --> 00:24:59 that elation,
00:24:59 --> 00:25:00 that
00:25:00 --> 00:25:05 after you've
00:25:05 --> 00:25:06 taken that
00:25:06 --> 00:25:06 first swallow?
00:25:07 --> 00:25:08 If I did
00:25:08 --> 00:25:08 that every
00:25:08 --> 00:25:09 night at
00:25:09 --> 00:25:09 dinner, I'd
00:25:09 --> 00:25:10 kind of get
00:25:10 --> 00:25:10 frowned on,
00:25:10 --> 00:25:12 but do you
00:25:12 --> 00:25:12 know that
00:25:12 --> 00:25:14 that
00:25:14 --> 00:25:16 is
00:25:16 --> 00:25:18 worship.
00:25:19 --> 00:25:20 Thankfulness,
00:25:20 --> 00:25:21 joy, and
00:25:21 --> 00:25:22 pleasure just
00:25:22 --> 00:25:23 erupt out of
00:25:23 --> 00:25:23 us.
00:25:23 --> 00:25:24 It's worship.
00:25:24 --> 00:25:25 We're responding
00:25:25 --> 00:25:26 to the
00:25:26 --> 00:25:27 satisfaction that
00:25:27 --> 00:25:28 we've found in
00:25:28 --> 00:25:28 the drink.
00:25:28 --> 00:25:30 the
00:25:30 --> 00:25:31 worshipers
00:25:31 --> 00:25:31 Jesus is
00:25:31 --> 00:25:33 after aren't
00:25:33 --> 00:25:34 doers of
00:25:34 --> 00:25:34 worship.
00:25:34 --> 00:25:35 No, Jesus
00:25:35 --> 00:25:36 was the
00:25:36 --> 00:25:38 doer for
00:25:38 --> 00:25:39 us, and
00:25:39 --> 00:25:40 now is our
00:25:40 --> 00:25:41 reason to
00:25:41 --> 00:25:42 worship.
00:25:43 --> 00:25:43 We're
00:25:43 --> 00:25:44 responders in
00:25:44 --> 00:25:45 worship, and
00:25:45 --> 00:25:46 can you see

00:25:46 --> 00:25:47 undoes the
00:25:47 --> 00:25:48 woman's
00:25:48 --> 00:25:49 expectations?

00:25:51 --> 00:25:52 ah
00:25:52 --> 00:25:53 isn't a
00:25:53 --> 00:25:54 set way of
00:25:54 --> 00:25:54 doing church
00:25:54 --> 00:25:55 or life.

00:25:58 --> 00:25:59 responsive to

00:26:18 --> 00:26:18 to be the
00:26:18 --> 00:26:19 boldest
00:26:19 --> 00:26:19 colour of
00:26:19 --> 00:26:20 our Sunday
00:26:20 --> 00:26:20 services.
00:26:20 --> 00:26:23 if we
00:26:23 --> 00:26:23 don't
00:26:23 --> 00:26:25 look
00:26:25 --> 00:26:26 satisfied,
00:26:27 --> 00:26:28 are we?
00:26:31 --> 00:26:32 Jesus'
00:26:32 --> 00:26:33 offer to
00:26:33 --> 00:26:33 come and
00:26:33 --> 00:26:33 drink is
00:26:33 --> 00:26:34 open to
00:26:34 --> 00:26:34 you.

00:26:55 --> 00:26:56 still there.
00:26:57 --> 00:26:57 The
00:26:57 --> 00:26:58 discontentedness
00:26:58 --> 00:26:59 often remains.
00:27:02 --> 00:27:03 Does that
00:27:03 --> 00:27:04 mean that
00:27:04 --> 00:27:05 Jesus hasn't
00:27:05 --> 00:27:06 satisfied us?
00:27:07 --> 00:27:08 No.
00:27:08 --> 00:27:09 He has.
00:27:10 --> 00:27:11 But we
00:27:11 --> 00:27:11 yearn and
00:27:11 --> 00:27:12 hurt and
00:27:12 --> 00:27:13 struggle and
00:27:13 --> 00:27:13 even doubt
00:27:13 --> 00:27:14 because we're
00:27:14 --> 00:27:16 waiting for a
00:27:16 --> 00:27:17 final satisfaction
00:27:17 --> 00:27:19 in eternity
00:27:19 --> 00:27:19 with God.
00:27:20 --> 00:27:21 And we're
00:27:21 --> 00:27:21 not there
00:27:21 --> 00:27:22 yet.
00:27:23 --> 00:27:23 But we
00:27:23 --> 00:27:24 have the
00:27:24 --> 00:27:26 glorious
00:27:26 --> 00:27:27 opportunity to
00:27:27 --> 00:27:27 go there
00:27:27 --> 00:27:28 every day
00:27:28 --> 00:27:28 and drink.

00:27:32 --> 00:27:32 gospel

00:27:51 --> 00:27:52 to Jesus,
00:27:52 --> 00:27:53 it's about
00:27:53 --> 00:27:54 Jesus and
00:27:54 --> 00:27:54 it's leading
00:27:54 --> 00:27:55 us to look
00:27:55 --> 00:27:56 forward to
00:27:56 --> 00:27:57 an eternity
00:27:57 --> 00:27:58 with him.
00:28:01 --> 00:28:02 It provides
00:28:02 --> 00:28:03 our hope in
00:28:03 --> 00:28:03 hurt and
00:28:03 --> 00:28:04 struggle and
00:28:04 --> 00:28:05 turns back the
00:28:05 --> 00:28:06 strongest doubts
00:28:06 --> 00:28:07 and fears.
00:28:09 --> 00:28:09 This good
00:28:09 --> 00:28:10 news, this
00:28:10 --> 00:28:11 gospel, this
00:28:11 --> 00:28:12 word of God
00:28:12 --> 00:28:13 is there every
00:28:13 --> 00:28:14 day for us as
00:28:14 --> 00:28:15 a reminder of
00:28:15 --> 00:28:15 Jesus'
00:28:15 --> 00:28:16 provision for
00:28:16 --> 00:28:17 us.
00:28:19 --> 00:28:21 But as
00:28:21 --> 00:28:22 Christians, we
00:28:22 --> 00:28:23 still don't
00:28:23 --> 00:28:24 always drink from
00:28:24 --> 00:28:25 satisfying the
00:28:25 --> 00:28:27 satisfying source of
00:28:27 --> 00:28:27 the gospel.
00:28:27 --> 00:28:28 We go elsewhere.
00:28:28 --> 00:28:29 I still stand
00:28:29 --> 00:28:30 over an empty
00:28:30 --> 00:28:31 fridge and wonder
00:28:31 --> 00:28:32 why I'm standing
00:28:32 --> 00:28:32 there.
00:28:34 --> 00:28:35 We still go in
00:28:35 --> 00:28:35 all the wrong
00:28:35 --> 00:28:37 directions, chasing
00:28:37 --> 00:28:37 desires.
00:28:38 --> 00:28:39 We go to money
00:28:39 --> 00:28:40 and to power and
00:28:40 --> 00:28:42 to other stuff
00:28:42 --> 00:28:43 that will not
00:28:43 --> 00:28:43 last.
00:28:44 --> 00:28:45 And as a
00:28:45 --> 00:28:46 Christian, if
00:28:46 --> 00:28:46 you aren't
00:28:46 --> 00:28:48 drinking regularly,
00:28:49 --> 00:28:50 you're needlessly
00:28:50 --> 00:28:51 thirsty and
00:28:51 --> 00:28:52 missing out on
00:28:52 --> 00:28:55 joy that Jesus
00:28:55 --> 00:28:56 is offering you.
00:28:57 --> 00:28:58 Doubt and
00:28:58 --> 00:28:59 pain and fear
00:28:59 --> 00:28:59 and uncertainty
00:28:59 --> 00:29:01 get continually
00:29:01 --> 00:29:02 pushed aside
00:29:02 --> 00:29:03 when we drink.
00:29:06 --> 00:29:07 So why don't
00:29:07 --> 00:29:07 we do that?
00:29:08 --> 00:29:08 Why don't we
00:29:08 --> 00:29:09 drink a little
00:29:09 --> 00:29:09 together?
00:29:09 --> 00:29:10 Look with me
00:29:10 --> 00:29:11 at the
00:29:11 --> 00:29:12 culmination of
00:29:12 --> 00:29:13 the gospel's
00:29:13 --> 00:29:14 promises to
00:29:14 --> 00:29:14 us, to the

00:32:53 --> 00:32:54 the Spirit and
00:32:54 --> 00:32:54 by the means of
00:32:54 --> 00:32:55 the gospel.
00:32:56 --> 00:32:57 And this,
00:32:59 --> 00:33:00 he took your
00:33:00 --> 00:33:01 discontent,
00:33:01 --> 00:33:05 thirst, and
00:33:05 --> 00:33:07 yearning for
00:33:07 --> 00:33:09 God, and he

00:33:12 --> 00:33:13 never have to.

00:33:19 --> 00:33:20 the Spirit, by the

00:33:22 --> 00:33:23 So let's come to
00:33:23 --> 00:33:23 God by his
00:33:23 --> 00:33:25 grace, by his
00:33:25 --> 00:33:26 spirit through the
00:33:26 --> 00:33:27 gospel, come as
00:33:27 --> 00:33:29 thirsty people, and
00:33:29 --> 00:33:30 get satisfied.
